FULL MOON OYSTER BAR OPENS IN DOWNTOWN ASHEBORO

W

hen I first moved to North Carolina from Maine, the one thing I lamented the most was there were no good seafood restaurants close by. There were great restaurants that served some type of seafood dish, but not a true seafood restaurant with lots of choices.

When the news broke that Full Moon Oyster Bar was going to open in Asheboro, the buzz was incredible. People obviously felt the same as I did, that Asheboro needed a good seafood restaurant.

As construction commenced on the Acme McCrary building, purchased by David Smith several years ago, the excitement grew.

David hired Mark Trollinger to do a complete remodel of a very dingy dark back area with large windows that open onto Trade Street. From a walkthru before construction began to the opening night of the restaurant on January 4th, it was a completely different space. They saved the original ceiling, and the walls were left a rustic brick, which adds

to the ambiance of the restaurant but the rest was completely transformed.

While the restaurant space was being built out, Full Moon hired the crew for the Asheboro location, and started them in other locations around the area.

This meant they were fully trained on opening night and there were none of the issues that usually plague an opening night (other than 150 people showing up all at once hungry for good seafood!).

One of the details I noticed immediately about the restaurant is the amount of space that the employees have to work in. This is one of the largest locations for Full Moon and the room the employees must navigate with drinks, food and shucking oysters is expansive. The restaurant has bar top seating all around with a few lower counter options if you don’t like the tall stools. When you walk in, it feels like they have been there forever. The décor is eclectic and reminiscent of a beach location so you feel transported – the oyster basket light fixtures are very

cool and are a signature design detail for all of the restaurants.

by Randy Russell and is family owned and operated to this day. His son Rob works in the company, as well as his grandson Bennett. Randy has created a culture of loving and encouraging the employees of Full Moon Oyster. The Asheboro staff is made up of a mix of employees that have been with the company for many years and about 50 percent are new to the company.

One of the things that Full Moon prides itself on when looking for locations to open their restaurants is not necessarily a large population like a big city, but smaller communities where they can really become part of that community. The managers in each location are given the freedom to form relationships with locals – like Central Bakery - who

provides all the cakes on their dessert menu in Asheboro. Each location forms relationships within its own community to sustain and grow great partnerships.

The seafood they purchase each week is produced as locally as possible, if not right here in North Carolina. Candace Matthews, the Operations Manager, works closely with North Carolina fisherman to make sure they are receiving the freshest catch.

They do not use seafood that has been injected with hormones, chemicals or preservatives. Everything is delivered fresh several times a week, especially those Oysters! They get three deliveries a week so the oysters you order are fresh and are only a day or so out of the ocean. This ensures you get fresh delicious oysters every trip!

support for the restaurant. In the first two weeks they were open, the restaurant served 6,000 pounds of oysters! That means, if that trend continues for the rest of 2024, they will go through approximately 145,000 pounds of oysters here in their Asheboro location alone. Over their other six locations in 2023, they purchased about 600,000 pounds total.

But they have much more than oysters on the menu – I know, I know, that’s why you eat there - but for those in your group who are not in the mood for seafood (really?) they offer several other options from steaks to a delicious teriyaki chicken. They also offer many dishes including pasta, risotto with seafood just about any way you like it.

Boasting some of the freshest seafood anywhere, their homemade recipes have been handed down over the years, making their soups and original entrees some of the best in the southeast.

Like the traditional steam houses down on the NC coast, they have learned that Fresh Oysters and other shellfish delights, are best prepared raw or steamed to preserve the salty goodness. They also offer grilled, baked, and select fried items prepared to order.

They have set food & beverage specials every day of the week, which is nice because you can plan your visit based on your favorites. They have a full bar and offer several beers on tap. Their cocktails won’t break the bank while you are enjoying your dinner.

Some of the cocktails make you feel like you are on a tropical beach and the fresh seafood just reinforces that vision.

Asheboro is the newest pearl in Full Moon Oyster’s crown – they originally opened in Clemmons, then added Jamestown, Southern Pines, Concord, Morrisville, and Atlantic Beach over the past twenty years. I’ve heard from several couples who traveled to Jamestown once a week for seafood and are happy to welcome them to Asheboro. I also heard from one family who has been to the restaurant seven times just since they opened on the 5th (and it’s probably more times than that since publication!)

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Full Moon Oyster Bar yet, what are you waiting for. Stop in today for some of the freshest seafood this side of the dock. Full Moon is located at 128 Trade Street (2nd entrance is around the corner at 124 North Street) in Asheboro. They do not take reservations, so put your name on the list when you get there and they will seat your party as soon as they can. The bar is available and there are stools and a rail around the restaurant to rest your drinks on while you wait.

Their motto has always been “Come as a Stranger, Leave as a Friend” and you feel that in the atmosphere at the Asheboro location. The staff are friendly and it’s a fun place to enjoy your lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch. They are open seven days a week – Sunday thru Thursday 11:30 am to 9:00 pm; Friday and Saturday 11:30 am to 10 pm. USE VENMO, CASHAPP, PAYPAL? GET READY FOR ANOTHER FORM THIS TAX SEASON

F

orm 1099-K is used to report certain payment transactions. But in 2023, there is a new rule that will affect a LOT of unsuspecting taxpayers. Here’s what to know about the form and what to do when you receive one.

IRS Form 1099-K gets a lot of attention each tax season. That’s in part because the 1099-K form is used to report certain payments from payment cards and third-party network transactions. And millions of people use third-party networks each year (think Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, Stripe, etc.) for both business and personal transactions.

But the 1099-K has received attention even before the current tax season started because of a new $600 reporting threshold for the form that is expected to apply for 2023. So, it’s important to know what the 1099-K form is and what to do when you do (or don’t) receive one.

What a 1099-K Form is Used For

An IRS 1099-K form is an IRS information

reporting form. Payment networks and other providers use the form to report certain transactions from payment cards and through various payment networks.

Third-party payment networks can include a range of providers that you’re likely familiar with like Venmo, PayPal, Stripe, and CashApp. And if you sell on Etsy, eBay, Depop, or other similar sites, you probably process payments through third party networks as well.

Now that we’re into 2023, a new, lower threshold applies to trigger a 1099-K. If, during 2023, you receive more than $600 for goods and services through a payment network–even if you only have a single transaction of that amount–you should receive a 1099K in early 2024. You would have to report that income on your 2023 federal income tax return.

This new, much lower threshold for the 1099-K (also known as the $600 rule) has caused a lot of confusion and means that a lot more people who have never received 1099-K’s in the past could receive one in the future. So, for example, if you sell a piece of furniture on eBay for $650 and were paid through a third-party payment network, and that’s your only such transaction

in 2023, you could receive a 1099-K for your 2023 tax return. In the past, that $650 sale would be far too small to trigger the IRS reporting form.

How Does a 1099-K Affect Your Taxes?

Whether you receive a 1099-K or not, the IRS expects you to report your taxable income. And thirdparty payment networks that you had transactions with that trigger the reporting threshold, will send a copy of the form to both you and the IRS. So, when you receive a 1099-K, you should keep it with your tax documents and make sure that the information on the form matches your records.

On your 2023 tax return in Schedule 1, there will be a line to exclude income received on a 1099-K that is exempt from taxes.

Double check that the income and other information on the form is accurate. If the 1099K doesn’t belong to you, has an incorrect taxpayer identification number, or has incorrect payment transactions or amounts, contact the payment network that sent you the form. Their information should appear on the lower left of the 1099-K. They may be able to correct the form and if they send you a corrected version. Keep that, along with any other correspondence from the network, in your files.

Keeping good records and documentation is the best way to support any deductions claimed and income reported on your federal tax return. And your claimed tax deductions and credits, and income, taken together, will ultimately determine how much tax you pay overall and whether you receive a tax refund.

The IRS has announced that they will audit almost 30% of all 1099-Ks that are issued for the 2023 tax year.

COLLEGE KICKS OFF SPRING SEMESTER, LAUNCHES RCC 2.0

andolph Community College faculty, staff, and Board members gathered Friday, Jan. 5, to celebrate the starting of the 2024 Spring Semester and to officially launch the 2024-2030 strategic plan process.

RCC President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan presented how RCC 2.0 will build on the 60-year legacy of the College.

“RCC will stand for Relevant, Careers, and Commitment,” he said. “RCC will stay Relevant to the needs of our community and industry. Careers will be at the core of our mission. We are renewing our Commitment to each other, to our students, to our partners, and to our community.”

After highlighting the College’s successes — being ranked as the No. 1 community college in North Carolina

by Niche and the Nursing Program’s top three state ranking by RegisteredNursing.org, Ardalan emphasized the need to meet or exceed the state’s goal of having 2

million people aged 25-44 earn high-quality credentials or a postsecondary degree by 2030. He then discussed the process of starting RCC 2.0 — with input from the College community, with a “one college” model — integrating Curriculum and Workforce Development and Continuing Education, and with enhancements, renovations, and expansion to facilities.

“We have so many things to be excited about this semester, this year, and in the coming years,” said Board Chair Reynolds Lisk Jr., who introduced his fellow Board members in attendance. “Randolph County is an exciting place right now, and RCC is at the center.”

New faculty and staff were introduced, and others were honored for years of service ranging from five years to 30 at the College. Attendees were treated to a performance on piano by Student Government Association President Paulina Escobar.

THE NORTH CAROLINA ZOO ANNOUNCES CALL FOR ARTISTS: ARTWORK FOR NEW ASIA REGION

T

he North Carolina Zoo and North Carolina Zoo Society announce a new Public Art opportunity for artists and artist teams to design art for the new continent of Asia. With a budget of $250,000 provided through the Zoo Society, this project will join the more than 150 works of art in and around the Zoo. The first step of the process, the Request for Qualifications, has begun and calls for artists (and artist teams) to submit their qualifications for the design, fabrication, and installation of a permanent outdoor public art project for installation within Asia. The Request will run through Feb. 2, 2024.

The art collection at the Zoo includes monumental works ranging from our iconic Elephant Group by Peter Woytuk, welcoming guests as they enter the Zoo, to the Bridge to Africa by Jim Hirschfield and Sonya Ishii, as well as more intimate surprises like our Preening Heron by William H. Turner tucked away overlooking the Swamp.

No matter which piece of the collection is on view, the art at the Zoo is intrinsically linked to our guest experience and educational mission.

The focus of the artistic collection within the Zoo is to enhance further the understanding and appreciation of our animals, wildlife, and natural habitat. All professional artists or artist-led teams aged 18 and above are eligible and encouraged to apply.

The project will be a three-phase selection process, including a qualification phase, a design phase, and the final selection phase. To submit your Qualifications to

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE SECURES COVETED ENGINEERING AWARD AND $10,000 GRANT FOR SCHOOL’S STEM PROGRAMS

A

sheboro High School is gearing up for a triumphant homecoming as hometown hero, Trevor Goldston, a distinguished graduate and current student at the University of North Carolina Asheville, returns bearing a substantial gift – a $10,000 grant. Goldston has been named the 2023 recipient of the esteemed Robin Lally Promising Engineer Achievement Award, a recognition that comes with not just prestige but also a mission to bolster Asheboro High School’s STEM initiatives.

On Monday, December 18th Goldston made a grand entrance at Asheboro High School to present a $10,000 grant check earmarked for the enhancement of the school’s College and Career Promise Program and Advanced Manufacturing Lab. The grant, funded by The Michael & Robin Lally Forward Foundation, not only applauds Goldston’s outstanding achievements but empowers him to direct a $10,0000 grant to his alma mater. This gesture embodies Goldston’s gratitude for his educational roots and amplifies The Forward Foundation’s unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM leaders.

“The Asheboro High School early college program provided a unique and enriching educational experience outside the typical high school curriculum, laying the foundation for my passion in engineering,” shared Goldston.

After graduating from Asheboro High School in 2021, Goldston began pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics, Robotics and Industrial Automation Engineering through the joint program offered by North Carolina State and the University of North Carolina Asheville. In 2022, Goldston earned a place in the Black American Engineering Scholarship Award program, a competitive scholarship made up largely of first generation college students and offered to just 20 students in 2023. Each year, one standout student is selected from the program to receive this achievement award.

“In addition to being an exceptional student, Trevor shows the discipline and drive of a true professional. I have been

impressed with his work ethic since our first phone call and I continue to be impressed as he advances through his rigorous degree,” said Robin Lally, President of The Forward Foundation. “I have no doubt that he will have a very successful and impactful career in engineering.”

Despite the difficulty of his engineering program, Goldston established himself as an exceptional student, earning a place on the Dean’s List and landing an internship with Auria Solutions USA, the world’s second largest supplier of filter-based automotive acoustic insulation and other fiber-based products.

As part of the Black American Engineering Scholarship Award program, Goldston was paired with a professional to mentor and guide him through college and into his engineering career. Goldston’s mentor, Jacques Smith, an aerospace engineer and North Carolina resident, gave him a glowing recommendation for the Promising Engineer Achievement Award.

“Trevor is truly passionate about engineering,” said Smith. “He possesses the unique combination of focus, intelligence, responsibility and the effort needed to be successful in the industry. Trevor has the ability to transition from theory to concept to practical application.

This, along with his desire to lead through collaborative efforts, will position him to be just as successful as an engineering professional as he has been as an engineering student.”

ne of the best kept secrets in Randolph County is the Information & Options Counseling Office at the Randolph Senior Adults Association, also known as I&OC. The I&OC office is located on the second floor of The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Adult Resource and Education Center. The staff of two, Margie DiDona, I&OC Director and Lisa Alley, I&OC Assistant help seniors or those caring for a senior with many services. They can assist with case assistance, resources available, Family Caregiver Support Program, and Medicare counseling.

Does Medicare Have You Confused? What exactly are all those commercials talking about? The I&OC staff are the Certified Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) Coordinators for Randolph County. Beginning October 15 through December 7, Medicare Open Enrollment is when Margie, Lisa, and their trained SHIIP volunteers are available to assist Medicare beneficiaries of any age in reviewing and choosing a plan to meet their needs for 2024. SHIIP is a division of the NC Department of Insurance and SHIIP volunteer counselors are trained to be an unbiased resource for your

Medicare needs. SHIIP Counselors are available in person Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4:00pm, or we can assist you by phone or email.

PALEO PUMPKIN BARS Ingredients

Bars: • 2 cups almond flour packed • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice • 1/4 cup almond butter • 2 tablespoons coconut oil melted • 1/4 cup coconut sugar • 2 tablespoons maple syrup • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 tablespoons almond milk • 1 cup pumpkin puree Maple Frosting: • 1/2 cup butter, ghee, or coconut oil softened • 1/3 cup maple syrup • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 2 tablespoons coconut flour

4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir well until all ingredients are combined.

5. Pour mixture into the prepared pan and place in the oven for 30-35 minutes, until center is set. Bars will be slightly moist.
