ROLL CALL 2020 THERE'S METHOD TO THE NAMING OF STORMS THAT AFFECT LOUISIANA AND BEYOND. by: Ashlynn B. Names like Katrina, Andrew, and Gustav may seem benign to outsiders, but to Louisianians, they mark major hurricanes. 2020 has been a record-breaking season for hurricanes, and these storms are tracked and named with intention, even though many may think they are dubbed at random.

According to the National Weather Service, a list of names, starting with A-W and omitting W, Y, and Z is generated each season to name storms in alphabetical and subsequent chronological order.

The NWS rotates out a list of six names based on which ocean the storm originates. After the names from the list in the English alphabet are exhausted, the Greek alphabet is utilized. This is how Hurricane Delta received its name. Significant storms, like Laura and Delta, do not get listed again, and those names will forever be retired.

This year, hurricanes Laura and Delta tore through the south with no remorse. Laura’s unforgiving winds left people without power for weeks, and Delta’s heavy rain flooded neighborhoods and communities. Destruction and damage were left from the effects of these storms.

However, meteorologist Nick Mickulas has brought light to the devastation by providing the community with information and general education on these storm systems.

Mikulas, whose leveled rhetoric is read by thousands, credits his childhood to his interest in storms. “It’s been a lifelong passion of mine. When I was a kid, I was scared of storms, but that fear turned into fascination,” Mikulas said. Although Mikulas isn’t forecasting full-time anymore, he can’t get away from sharing his knowledge on storms. He’s taken to social media--most popularly, Facebook--to keep Alexandrians and beyond informed. “Now I get to experience the weather the way I want. I am able to be social and connect with the community in a way that wasn’t possible when I was working for the station,” Mikulas said.

Although this summer and fall have been unprecedented, Mikulas hopes that with knowledge and a plan, the people of Central Louisiana can feel a bit more prepared and optimistic.

FRESHMAN ACADEMY

by: Carmen D. Freshman Academy has proved to help the jump from middle school to high school be a little less strenuous for our newest students campus.

The goal of Freshman Academy is to help them have a positive attitude and perform well in their new environment.

This year the Freshman Mentor experience has been limited to Zoom calls rather than face-to-face meetings. Previously each group of mentors and freshmen were assigned to a “house” so they could connect with others outside of their mentor group in hopes to evoke school spirit. Mrs. Hilton, Freshman Academy administrator, remains hopeful that the students at ASH this year still feel welcomed and connected to the community.

“The teachers are still communicating through our group messages.

We are still working that way and we’ve added a counselor on campus for students who are struggling; we have an added resource for them,” Mrs. Dodson, Freshman Academy teacher, said. Even though there have been some challenges this year, our teachers have and will do everything they can to help Freshman Academy achieve its goal.

ON THE AIR

HEAD COACH THOMAS BACHMAN AND DOUG GANN TEAM UP TO PRODUCE A WEEKLY RADIO SHOW. by: Emma B.

Sometimes the greatest gifts in life are just given without an explanation. Doug Gann, General Manager of Stephens Media, has one of these unexplained gifts. “There are people that God puts in your life, and you don’t question it--- that’s Thomas Bachman for me,” Gann said. The two have been friends for four years; yet, according to Gann, it feels like a lifetime.

In 2016, there was a need for a high school football coach’s show in Central Louisiana. Trojan Football head coach, Thomas Bachman, was the perfect man for the job. His energy and passion for not only football, but for his players, created the programming content for the Thomas Bachman Show today.

Starting off on the bottom floor of a radio station, Gann and Bachman’s relationship flourished.

Gann was and is still today in awe of how Bachman is 100% about the kids. “It’s a spotlight on our program, but it promotes our kids, and those are the great things that come from it,” Bachman said.

In 2018, ASH graduates Ricky Tompkins and Brandon Thompson opened Walk-On’s restaurant in Alexandria. With a love for ASH and sports, they offered to host the show at Walk-On’s. “I met Coach Bachman a few years ago, and we built a relationship. Success has grown in the program as well as with our restaurant,” Ricky Thomkins, part owner of Walk-On’s said. While several relationships prospered from the Thomas Bachman show, it also became a great way for the young athletes to learn how to speak and communicate on air.

Players are interviewed every week to discuss successes, failures, and future plans. “The show teaches these guys how to hold up their end of the conversation and talk about the game in detail,” Bachman said.

Bachman brings on a couple of players every week “to learn to communicate and speak and hold their end of the conversation in those situations,” Bachman says as speaks about the several beneficial aspects that the Thomas Bachman show has brought to ASH. The Thomas Bachman Show airs every Thursday at Walk-On’s from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The show can be heard live on 103.5 or 104.3 FM. On Friday’s, a live play-by-play of the current game is broadcast on the same radio stations.

Clean-up Crew

Community service is one of the defining pillars of the ASH MCJROTC program. Following the devastation of Hurricane Laura, 19 cadets, led by the ASH MCJROTC Company Commander, Cadet Major Lorelei Paul and cadets from all five platoons--including the virtual platoon--traveled to the Alexandria Zoo to participate in clean-up efforts.

The Alexandria Zoo sustained major damage from downed trees. Several animals’ habitats were affected, and the zoo will be closed until the facility can safely reopen for visitors. MCJROTC focused their efforts on picking up debris on the main railroad track.

“We’re hoping that we can go back to continue in the clean-up project. We wanted to help the community and be able to do something helpful for the rest of Alexandria,” says Eric R., junior and member of MCJROTC. This service project is especially important to the cadets considering many of them hold many positive memories of the zoo from childhood.

More memories will be made for ASH’s MCJROTC cadets, as they helped return the Alexandria Zoo to a position where it can reopen to our community.

Cadets work to clean the debris. They were also able to pet the reptiles that are still living at the zoo.

SHOOT FOR VICTORY

The Boys Varsity Basketball season is almost at its starting point as ASH prepares for another season of basketball. They are looking to capture their second title in a row after winning their first-ever 5A State Championship in school history last season.

After losing four senior players from last season that contributed to the title, some players are looking to “step up their game” as they prepare for the new season. Not only is ASH getting some new players, but also adding a new assistant coach, Coach Whitman, who was the head coach for Atlanta High School’s basketball team.

Coach Brasher, the head coach for ASH’s basketball team, expects his team to know that this year is going to be different with new guys this year as he tries to build the team again from the ground up.

C AMPU S LIFE by: Emma F., Lanee L., & Jolie D. This school year has brought with it challenges and obstacles because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students began the school year in a hybrid model, where only 50% of the school was occupied. ASH is currently in Phase 3, which allows all students to be on campus to recieve face-to-face instruction.

Our writers checked in with a few students and a teacher to get a first-person perspective on the year thus far.

What has been your favorite memory from ASH so far?

¨As a freshman I´m still making a lot of new memories, but I love the football games. Iḿ on pomline so we get to cheer and go to all the games. I just love going and being with my friends.¨

How has Covid-19 impacted the Robotics program? ¨Because of guidelines, some competitions are virtual.

We will have some in person, but we also have some virtual competitions online this year, which is a first.¨

NEW YEAR, NEW PRINCIPAL

By: Ella B. Photo by: Emily F. Walking in the busy hallways of Alexandria Senior High, many people simply pass one another by, never thinking twice about it, or only giving a half-hearted greeting. But the newest member of the administrative team at ASH, Principal Ben Arrington, is driven by a compassionate and personal leadership approach.

Growing up Arrington was surrounded by educators and people dedicated to being a positive influence in a kids’ lives. He carries this approach to ASH. “If I were in a classroom right now, going through everything our students have to, what would I want to hear?” is Arrington’s approach to starting the day off in the right mindset.

Down to the small details like the hand-picked daily quotes at the end of each morning’s announcements, Arrington strives every day to have a positive impact no matter how small it may seem.

Although this is Arrington’s first year as a principal, he has over 20 years of experience in education. He graduated from Louisiana College with a degree in secondary education. He later earned a master’s degree from Northwestern State University in Gifted Education. Finally, he earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University.

He first grew interested in becoming a teacher because it ran in his family; his mom was a teacher and dad was a social worker. Growing up in that environment, helping people and then pursuing a career in education was almost second nature. “I always loved being in a classroom and making that a very positive experience,” Arrington said.

Arrington spent 19 years at Tioga High School, but “had always admired from afar the administration and environment at ASH.” This is what pushed him to take that step out of his comfort zone and make the move from Tioga.

To him, being here at ASH is more than just a job; it is an opportunity to be surrounded by people he admires and to lead with a sense of empathy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO NURTURE & CARE THROUGH N AT U R E . by: Amelia M. Ms. Adilya Ellington’s Community Based Training class and Ms. Iles’s Freshman Study Skills class are stepping outside their classrooms in a creative and purposeful way this year. Holland Lop bunnies were donated by the Fowlkes family and are now incorporated into the daily activities that teach lifelong skills, like responsibility and empathy.

Ellington sees the animals as a way to, “bring all of us together in a calm, soothing, and therapeutic way.” Ellington and her students are often spotted showing off the bunnies, whose names are Latte, Mocha, Coconut and Buster, to others on campus. They even have students take time out of their day to visit CBT to check in on them.

Caring for the bunnies is a daily task for CBT. The students learn how to: mark a checklist, keep the animals safe, and ensure that they are fed the proper foods.

“There is one student who thought that he was afraid of all animals, but now absolutely loves the bunnies more than anything,” Ellington said. Also, many of the students have gained confidence from interacting with the bunnies.

Ms.Amanda Iles’s class owns the fourth bunny, Buster. Iles wanted to get Buster because she wanted her students to have something at school to look forward to every day. Iles understands that school can be very stressful and it’s not easy or fun all the time. However, Buster helps students feel happy.

Unlike Ellington’s bunnies, Buster is kept outside instead of in her classroom. Each day, her students go outside to complete their jobs with the bunny.

Iles not only has a bunny to take care of, but she also is in charge of the ASH Gardens. She began planting the garden over the summer. Every Wednesday her students spend time outside working on the garden. Student Jera’mi says,” It’s fun to take care of the garden and you get to go outside.”

Another student, Cortez, says the best part about the garden is, “growing more vegetables.”

Currently, tomatoes are being grown, and Iles is planning to start a winter vegetable garden in the coming weeks. “In the future, I would love the garden to be a school-wide project,” Iles said. Local businesses are donating money to fund the expansion of this garden project.

In the spring, the class hopes to enjoy harvesting more vegetables to enjoy. For now, the bunnies and gardens are giving students at ASH an outlet for expression and a sense of belonging in their programs.

“In theatre, you are forced to sit down, be quiet, and actively listen to what’s being told to you. At the end, you can interpret anyway you like, but you are not allowed to interrupt or dismiss it. I’ve played everything on stage from a billionaire to a slave” Tyler Price, ASH Theatre Director, said.

Theatre has the power to transport people to new places, expose the experiences of others and enhance the lives of both cast members and those in the audience. For Tyler Price, this magic of theatre is what sparked his love for it as a child.

Price’s mother passed away at the age of nine from a brain tumor. He was assigned a social worker to check in on him in the wake of this event. This social worker quickly noticed his dramatic and charming personality, and knew he belonged in theatre classes. She contacted the Talented Theatre program, and the teacher of this program saw something special in Price. He auditioned for the class and his passion for theatre began.

“During a song in the musical Dear Edwina, we were choreographed to point at one girl in the audience at the end of the song. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was our second performance of the day, and I pointed at this little Spanish girl in the front row and her face lit up. I saw that I put so much joy in her heart. I remember calling my theatre teacher that night and saying ‘this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life, today was magical,’” Price said.

After graduating from Northwestern State University, Price’s career took him all over the country. Price’s favorite places he has ever worked are Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Cedar Point and Busch Gardens are amusement parks so he was able to walk around parks everyday for an income. He said this “never got old.” Busch Gardens was his favorite amusement park because he was there during the Christmas season. He loved working at Pagosa Springs, Colorado because it is his favorite place on Earth due to the beautiful mountains and the people who live there.

At ASH, Price plans on directing many plays and musicals, beginning with Footloose. The auditions will be November 19-20. Price’s plans for the theatre department are to develop more talent and introduce more students to joy that acting, singing and engaging with an audience can bring.

MORE THAN AN ATHLETE, TAYLOR REVEALS THE ORIGIN OF HIS MOTIVATION. wby: Emily H.

Standing on the Mandeville football field, during the second round of playoffs for the Alexandria Senior High Football team, Shield Taylor was getting ready to begin a crucial game for the Trojans. He told his mom, Ronda Taylor, earlier that day to not worry about coming to the game that night because of the long, strenuous drive; he would have preferred her to go home and rest after an exhausting day at work. As Taylor looked into the stands, with stadium lights beaming into his eyes, he caught a glimpse of his mom cheering on the Trojans.

“I did what I had to, so I could always be there,” said Ms. Taylor. No matter what it takes, Ronda Taylor is at every event that her children are involved in.

As a young boy, Taylor realized his passion for football at Brame Middle School. He was always larger than most of the boys his age, so he was gifted with the necessary skill set for a tight end.

When asked why Taylor has kept with football for the past six years he replied, “I realized I liked football when I enjoyed the process more than I did winning.”

Taylor’s dream growing up was always to play football. “As a kid, it’s everyone’s dream to play in the NFL or play at college, so yes, I thought I would [make it]”, Taylor said. He admits that Stanford was never in the picture, mainly because he did not think he would academically qualify. Now, Taylor has a full scholarship to play at Stanford University.

Taylor’s interest in football goes far past his own personal success. His family’s well being has always been a top priority. “I’ll put my mom where I want her to be and my siblings in a good place as well,” Shield said. For most, football is all about the win and success; for Taylor, it’s much deeper: his goal is providing his family with their best possible life.

Skylar, Suede, and Slate have been with him “through thick and thin”, and their bond is unbreakable. “They have taught me how to be me. I would not be the person I am today without them”, Taylor said. Skylar, Taylor’s sister, was the one who he refers to as his “backbone”. Her guidance and quality time help Taylor navigate his world and the decisions that have been placed before him.

Another guiding figure in Taylor’s life is his mother, his role model. Ronda Taylor has been determined and hard-working her whole life. In high school, she juggled four jobs and ASH/CENTRIC

started working as a hairdresser at the age of 17. Taylor says that she is the toughest, most reliable woman he knows. She is always curious about Taylor’s progress on the field and in the classroom.

“Everything that I had ever done was worth it”, said Ms.Taylor. Throughout all of the years, Taylor’s mom never missed an event that her children were involved in; she sacrificed many things to better her children.

Taylor partially contributes his football success to the struggles of his past. Without them, he would not be the person he is. His siblings had the biggest impact on him. “I felt like they were the only ones there at times,” he said. Whether it was in the stands or right next to his hospital bed, they were always encouraging him.

Taylor exemplifies a genuine sense of self. Although experiencing both hardships and successes in the past 17 years, his ability to live in the moment propels him to continue persisting and conquering each day with conviction and purpose.

WHO IS A SH FO OTBALL? by : Emma B.

When defining a particular subject, one may use words. When defining the meaning of Trojan Football, coaches would use Chris Gray as their primary description.

Senior running back, Chris Gray, embodies the ASH football program entirely. When Gray walked into football workouts three years ago, he may have been overlooked because he was not as advanced as the other players; however, he entered the program with integrity and the intentions of becoming a player that was never overlooked or forgotten.

“The ASH football program is a direct reflection of the school’s culture,” Josh Mercer, Defensive Pass Game Coordinator, said. The football team is centered around victories both on and off the field.

ASH football players are held to the standard of striving to be the best versions of themselves.

The program is disciplined around a driving principle from Focus 3 Leadership Academy: “Leaders create culture. Culture drives behavior. Behavior produces results.”

Gray shows up for practice everyday, ready to give everything he has. He always “goes the extra mile”, no matter what the circumstances may be.

Along with Gray’s leadership, his selflessness is equally notable. “What the other players do not see is him cleaning up the locker room after everyone has left so the team does not have to run the next afternoon. A player that was competing with him for his position made a serious offense by leaving a jersey on his pads. Chris picked it up, and put it in the wash,” Mercer explained.

Gray picks up any weight that is not being carried by his fellow teammates. Defensive Coordinator, DeWayne Severio said it best, “Chirs Gray is ASH Football because of his work ethic and commitment to our shared mindset.”

Class of 2019 graduate, Jack G., embodied the same morals and set the tone for the type of leadership that Gray carries out today. “My motivation came from Jack. I decided that when he graduated, I would pick up where he left off in leading the football team,” Gray said.

Not only does Gray have an impact on his coaches; he is a role model for his teammates.

“Chris has the motivation that will get the team going everyday. He is someone that I look up to for his leadership. The team would not be the same without him,” Juneau said.

Senior linebacker Jermaine McNeal has played with Gray over the course of their high school careers. “He works hard everyday and has a positive attitude on and off the field. When someone is down, he is sure to pick them up,” McNeal said.

Players such as Gray remind fellow players, coaches and even fans that football is more than a game; that one of its central purposes is to foster growth in people.

This spirit group dances throughout the game to promote more spirit to help lead the football team to victory.

Drum Major ______ leads the band into the stadium. While the band marches in, the drumline plays during the procession. The energizing beats help bystanders and spirit teams alike feel the excitement of the night.

The cheerleaders come ready to liven the crowd. They carry megaphones, stow pom-poms in their backpacks and bring an enthusiastic energy to lead Trojan fans in cheers and chants throughout the game.

ALUM SPOTLIGHT: BOB BOCCACCIO ASH GRADUATE, CLASS OF 1977, MAKES A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN VIDEOGRAPHY. by: Elizabeth D. Bob Boccaccio stands on the sidelines at an LSU football practice near Coach Charlie McClendon. It’s been about two years since he graduated from Alexandria Senior High School in 1977. The camera that he uses is bulky, heavy. He’s in the company of a legendary coach and a winning team. This sparks his interest in sports videography and production.

Boccaccio’s time at LSU was studded with opportunities for professional growth in a career that he hadn’t considered in high school. After a student job in the audio/visual department, Boccaccio began working with cameras, sound, and lighting as first a responsibility and then a passion.

“After a tough run in Organic Chemistry, I decided to switch my major to broadcasting,” Boccaccio said. It is here that his love for filming and storytelling emerged.

His time in college would prepare him for work with networks such as: ABC, ESPN, NFL, HBO, CBS, and MTV. Working with B.B. King, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and influential blues musician, is among one of Boccaccio’s fondest memories. “I traveled with him, and it was one of the few times I’ve ever asked for an autograph.”

Boccaccio also notes working for the PBS documentary series: American Roots Music where he shot musicians in Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi as a highlight in his career.

He started his own production company in 1991 and sought to stay current with technology to distinguish himself from other videographers in the area. Although his work took him all over the country, Boccaccio did not have the urge to move away from Baton Rouge, La. “I wasn’t chasing a Hollywood career,” Boccaccio illustrates. With LSU and New Orleans Saints football, there was plenty of work in the area, and Boccaccio was still able to enjoy hunting and fishing in the state.

“I feel honored being able to have the career I had, but more importantly, I really enjoyed it,” Boccaccio said.

“Be out there and connect with other students,”Boccaccio says as he reflects on the most impactful piece of advice he could give student journalists. “And thank those who gave you any opportunity.”

ASH MEDIA: WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO. By: Karlee K. and Madison G. earciis debit

Digital Media is a class for students to take and learn how to strengthen skills from reporting to photography. The result is getting to express perspectives through platforms using media rather than one’s voice.

“Digital Media has helped me be a better writer and be more involved in the school and know what's going on because you have to ask people about different topics and,” Lauren R., media student, said.

Throughout class, students experience hands-on projects geared to elevate students’ abilities to: write, communicate and document. Digital Media is responsible for maintaining and creating content across the ASH social media platforms. This helps parents and students know what’s happening on campus.

“ With the social media accounts, parents can know about new teachers and what's going on around ASH with sports, clubs, and new policies which is especially important this year,” Ashley Kitchen, ASH parent, said. Media students work hard behind the scenes to develop stories and take photos to represent our school. Media I students produced this digital magazine.
