A seed to sow

Lavender plants are the perfect addition to the lazy gardener’s yard. And lavender’s not just blue—plants flower in white, pink or pale purple through to inky, intense blue or violet. Planted in a row, compact varieties form a low hedge to edge a bed or path, or trace the outline of a traditional knot garden filled with other herbs.

A place to go Te Moana Gorge has an extensive picnic area beside the river where children can enjoy playing in the shallow water. There’s also a quiet campsite by the river providing about 10 spots, public toilet and swimming which includes a sheltered and shady area where you can jump off the rocks by waterfalls, into the pools below.

A walk to take Sharplin Falls Track is an easy walk suitable for people of modest fitness, approximately 45 minutes each way, through some very pretty forest and ferns. Follow the high-level track, going through the forest to a catwalk around a bluff, and then descending to the falls.

Something to make

Home baking is not only great fun to do with the children it’s also cost effective and nutritious. Involve your children when deciding what to bake and in the whole messy baking process—the more mess the more fun.
