ATS winning over both halves of a tough season.

With sliding dairy commodity prices, surging beef returns and average sheep meat values, there is no arguing the 2015 farming season has got off to a roller coaster start.

The news in early August of a “pay out with a 3 in it” stunned farmer shareholders who were still grappling with the after-effects of the season before where prices had slumped from the record $8.00/kg MS-plus

high. The bleak dairy news that had started leaking from autumn did at least deliver a silver lining.

The Kiwi dollar launched itself into a steady decline, sliding from US 77¢ in late April to as low as US 62¢ in later September. Even now it sits about US 65¢, a full 20% below where it was in autumn, and 26% below where it sat last July.

No doubt this has helped buffer the dairy sector from an even worse decline, but it also gave the red meat sector a welcome boost.

The result has been a cattle market that has held up well over the past 12 months.

Meantime the sheep meat market shook off some of its jitters and even pushed ahead slightly of where it was a year ago.

However prospects are now looking average for the rest of the season.

ATS’s annual report gives a good indication of what chairman Phil McKendry described as “a year of two halves.”

Trading for the first six months to December last year was buoyant, but dairy farmers quickly tightened expenditure in light of looming payout cuts.

Nevertheless the co-operative has fared well and ATS’s ability to weather this tough year was helped by acting well ahead of time. We shifted our focus, ramping up our call centre service which has been

welcomed by shareholders as a cost effective and direct way to stay in touch and service their needs.

Inventory management at all our stores had been tightened to keep stock costs low, and we successfully reviewed our free freight policy to keep its costs realistic.

ATS shareholders are also starting to benefit from gaining 100% control of Ruralco which started out as a joint venture with partner Ravensdown.

Timing means last year’s accounts do not reflect the full benefits yet. But our dedicated team are working hard to expand Ruralco’s reach through the national rural community.

Over time we are confident the Ruralco Card will become the “card of choice” for farmers and their families around New Zealand seeking a reliable, genuine discount and charge card that meets all the needs of home and farm business.

Meantime, with plenty still to do over the Christmas period, and one wary eye upon what El Nino may bring, I hope all our shareholders get some time to relax, even a little, to enjoy their family and friends over the festive season.

Excise tax refund If you’re a business owner who uses petrol-powered equipment in your operations, you may be entitled to an excise tax refund of up to 69¢ per litre. This includes using petrol powered equipment to: • Move about the land you and your staff work on (i.e. ATV’s used by farmers); • Work the land the equipment operates on (i.e. lawnmowers used by green keepers, hydraladas used by orchardists); • Keep your businesses operating (i.e. builders using generators, chainsaws used in forestry).

To lodge a claim to refund fuel excise duty, contact Kerry Aldrich from the NZTA (New Zealand Transport Authority) on 06 953 7021 or 0800 108 809 (Ext 7021), she will advise you on your claim, register your request and ensure you have the correct forms to fill out.

Farm Safety Manual and Training for Members Today’s farmers and land owners are required to actively manage all aspects of health and safety around the farm. The new Health & Safety at Work Act comes into force 4th April 2016. To assist with this process ATS plans to provide members with access to a farm safety manual and relevant training.

Upon completion of the training, members will be able to apply for a discount on their ACC levies.
