I have had a couple of questions recently about fuel pricing around how do you know if you are receiving the best possible deal. With so many pricing options and structures offered by different fuel companies it is easy to misunderstand or become confused about the different discounts on offer. Neal Shaw, Group CEO

6¢ off the petrol and diesel pump price (per litre) and 10.5¢ off the national price for diesel at truck stops (per litre). Note: Truck stop prices maybe 4.5–5¢ higher than the pump price.

BP
5¢ off the petrol and diesel National list price (per litre) and 10¢ off the price of diesel at truck stops (per litre). Note: The BP National list price is the average pump price in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch; and the truck stop price sits at 4.5¢ higher than the National list price so the discount in real terms would equate to 5.5¢ off the pump prices.

The Ruralco discount of 9¢ per litre works out to be the best discount for members as there are no other hidden costs or charges to weaken this offer. The possibility of other charges or fees should be taken into account when looking for the best fuel price amongst other fuel companies and you should be aware of such costs as card and transaction fees. It is important to read and understand the details relating to fuel pricing. An example of this is where a fuel supplier might charge a monthly card fee instead of replacement card fees or transaction fees. It may look appealing but it is worth doing the sums to see what the actual costs will be. Transaction fees can be another hidden cost, and could mount up making a perceived discount not so attractive after-all. It is also worth noting that by using your fuel card in conjunction with a service station pump discount you can maximise your savings. If a service station is offering a low price for fuel (sometimes 10–15¢ off normal pump prices, this is occurs regularly in the North Island) you will get this discount at point of sale plus still receive the relevant member discount when you receive your fuel account. ATS and Ruralco are constantly reviewing costs for members and these are updated regularly on our website.
