Farming’s success in Canterbury has been based upon the scale and opportunity the plains offer for dynamic farmers.

As a closely held co-operative owned by the farmer shareholders who use its services, ATS is able to listen to feedback from them, and respond quickly to their needs.

Because ATS has listened, it offers a range of services tailored to the business needs of its members, from the soil their businesses are based upon, to the power that helps their crops and grass grow.

That focus on valued members starts with the three carefully located ATS farm supplies stores. With outlets in Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia, members are never far from quality products and local advice.

The stores ensure ATS offers a retail hub in each centre that is also the base for its skilled field staff to operate from. They are available to deliver advice based on knowledge

specific to the Canterbury region. Each store also provides a pleasant members lounge to relax in and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

ATS Farm Supplies Manager Grant Cullimore says the strong local farm supplies retail presence underscore’s ATS’s commitment to giving members service within their own district, without having to travel great distances for what they need.

Backing up physical presence with a quality Customer Service Centre has also ensured members can call ATS, knowing they can access staff that understand their business, and provide advice over the phone quickly and professionally.

Recognising the reliance Canterbury farmers have upon water, ATS has also ensured members have support to help get the most cost effective electricity package to deliver that water.

ATS Energy Account Manager Tracey Gordon brings over a decade of experience in the electricity sector and works closely with members to get them the best deal possible in a competitive market, and one that can be confusing at times.

“Because we are independent we offer impartial advice on the best deals available, acting purely for our members’ benefit.”

Any energy issues can also be passed on to her.

“We know our members are busy people, and we are here to take those problems

off their hands.”

ATS General Manager Operations Jono Pavey says ATS’s close contact with members means staff have an excellent understanding of members specific needs.

It is a knowledge not always present in larger nationwide farm service providers.

“We make a point of working with and supporting our members with their farming needs. With knowledgeable local staff across all areas of ATS and a local Customer Service Centre, we are able to help members with all their needs for a successful farming operation.”

ATS Chief Executive Neal Shaw says the “small change” investment in ATS shares deliver benefits well in excess of that initial share cost.

“Farmers invested in ATS as shareholders are empowered – they can exert an influence throughout the co-operative. That runs from the level of service they receive, the type of products we stock and even the board behind the co-operative, by voting.”

ATS began with the intent to bring more value to local farmers 50 years ago, and that focus remains today.

As farming has become more complex, ATS has moved with the times to now cover all aspects of energy, seeds, fertiliser and farm supplies, whilst retaining personal service and knowledgeable staff.
