Application forms for Ashburton District Council’s community grants and funding are now available. The forms are available earlier than usual this year as part of Council’s changes to the 2016/17 community grants and funding process. The changes will affect people applying for funding of projects or programmes they intend to run in the 2016/17 financial year (July to June). Three information seminars were held by Council in January and February to explain the changes to community groups and organisations. More than 100 people attended the seminars to learn about the new process. Council’s Research and Monitoring Advisor Toni Durham says people were particularly interested in finding out when they needed to apply and to checking that they were applying to the correct funding category. There are now five funding categories for all community grants. These ashburtondc.govt.nz

community group, as the annual plan process will instead focus on getting feedback from the community on Council’s plans for its activities.

The natural and built environment category covers heritage and biodiversity grants and includes community infrastructure grants for facilities such as community and memorial halls, reserve boards and community swimming pools. The grants are for minor enhancements like painting.

The Creative Communities and Sport New Zealand Rural Travel Fund are not affected by these changes.

Applications for all community grants are open until 5pm on 29 February 2016. Funding will be allocated in July 2016 for the financial year. In the natural and built environment category, biodiversity and heritage grants will have another funding round in July/August but the other four categories have only one application round.

“Previously, community grant applications opened in August and funding was distributed in September,” Mrs Durham says. “The changes enable community grants to be included in the annual plan process, meaning that Council will be able to consider increasing funding if there are worthy applications.” The changes will also make the process clearer for both Council and applicants. Separate individual approaches for funding to the annual plan process will no longer be required by any

During 2015/16, Council will spend more than $1.3 million on grants and funding for organisations that are extending their reach into the community and supporting community wellbeing.
