Local musicians looking to showcase their talent this summer are being invited to take part in two Christmas Busker Nights on Friday 6 and 20 December in Ashburton.

Nights of Lights, the Ashburton District's annual Christmas festival is happening again in the lead up to Christmas, and will feature two Buskers Nights.

Local artists are being sought for the events to entertain and share their music.

Buskers Nights, presented by the Ashburton Courier will run from 6.30pm - 9.30pm on both 6 and 20 December, providing attendees with live music and ashburtondc.govt.nz

Roadworks underway on Inland Scenic Route, Mayfield A 2.2 kilometre section of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road (Inland Scenic Route) on the outskirts of Mayfield is undergoing road rehabilitation works.

Ashburton Contracting Limited (ACL) working on behalf of the Council, are overlaying the road from Mayfield to the Watts Road intersection.

Overlaying is a type of road rehabilitation where sections of weak road pavement are dug out and an overlay of strong gravels is applied to the road before being sealed.

The project began on 10 October and is expected to be complete in early December.

A 30km/hour speed restriction is in place for the roadworks and drivers are urged to travel with care.

Charity lunch serves up celebration of culture Residents using the Ashburton App now have quick access to Council news, videos and other important information following the addition of a new Ashburton District Council button on the app.

The Council has partnered with the Ashburton Guardian's app to help provide residents with easy access to Council services and information.

The Council button, which is located on the Ashburton App home screen, went live on Monday 21 October. It is the latest addition to the Council's suite of communication tools that it uses to engage with the community.

"The Ashburton App has a large audience, with over 15,000 installed devices. Residents are using it as a central place to find local information and services, and a Council presence on the app helps to complete the Ashburton District experience for users.

Through the Council button, residents have access to the latest Council news, videos, information for the EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Library, Ashburton Museum and Council office, and elected member information.

"We have worked closely with the Ashburton Guardian to develop improved features that weren't previously available on the app," Mr Brake continued. "The improvements mean that news and information from the Council are available on the Ashburton App in real-time."

The 2019 Rugby World Cup may be the biggest event bringing world nations together at the moment, but last month (30 September), it wasn't the only place to showcase cultural pride and diversity.

For $6.00 and a small pantry item donation, staff dinned on a variety of dishes prepared by their colleagues, from lamb cawl (chucky broth), completo (Chilean hot dogs), sausage curry, adobo and rice, beef bourguignon and bobotie to cheese rolls, Hong Kong egg tarts and sapa (Samoan chop suey).

In a small staffroom in Ashburton (9,522km away from the rugby action), 71 dishes covering 19 different world cuisines, prepared by 61 'chefs' lined the tables for a 'Round the World Lunch' event.

A number of people at the Council come from diverse cultures, and the lunch was an opportunity to share a piece of home and culture with each other, while also raising money for a good cause.

The Ashburton District Council staff who participated in their fourth annual charity lunch appeal shared tastes from all over the world in a celebration of their diverse workforce and to raise money for the Salvation Army.​

The event raised $320.00 and these proceeds, along with the pile of pantry items were donated to the Salvation Army.

In addition to the Ashburton App, the Council has a monthly print publication (District Diary) and e-newsletter (District Wrap), social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, a YouTube channel and a free text alert service, to ensure residents are informed.

DOG OWNERS NEW HANDBOOK / PLANTING DAY, LAKE CAMP

Dog owners urged to check Planting day helps to restore native species at their responsibilities in Lake Camp new handbook Local dog owners looking to enjoy the district's open spaces with their pets these warmer months are being encouraged to check a new dog owner resource for places to exercise dogs and to find useful advice on being a responsible owner.

The Council is reminding owners to utilise designated dog exercise areas and to keep their pets on a lead in public places with the help of its free Dog Owner's Handbook, now available on its website.

The handbook has been designed to promote both animal and community safety, and outlines what is required of owners in regards to the Dog Control Bylaw and Dog Control Act 1996.

Council Environmental Services Group Manager, Jane Donaldson says this time of year often sees more dogs and their owners out exercising more frequently, and that this usually sparks an increase in dogs running off leash in areas they shouldn't be.

"Exercising your dog is vital to their health and wellbeing, but equally important is the need to ensure the wider public and their pets remain safe from threatening and nuisance dog behaviours. For this reason, unless they are in a designated off leash area, all dogs must remain on a leash in public spaces. It's about sensibly balancing these two issues."

Northpark Road and the Ashburton River Trail walkways are public areas where dogs must remain on a leash.

The Council provides a number of off leash areas around the district where dogs can run off lead under the constant control of their owner. These include two fenced dog parks in Ashburton, sections of Ashburton parks and reserves and the newly opened Methven dog park.

These areas, along with useful advice to keep your dog from wandering and how to behave safely around dogs are included in the new Dog Owner's Handbook.

Lakes Camp and Clearwater in the Ashburton District high country are a sight to behold on a sunny spring day, and earlier this month, they provided a magnificent backdrop for the 14 people who gathered on the lake shores to plant native trees and grasses.

The planting day, organised by the Ashburton District Council, saw staff, hut holders, Forest & Bird members and councillors don gloves and sturdy boots for a day in the dirt, planting beech trees and grasses.

The lakes are a scenic haven away from the hustle and bustle of town life, attracting bach owners and visitors for many years, but a fast spread of exotic and invasive tree species has threatened to transform the landscape.

The Council together with the Lake Camp and Clearwater Working Group have been working to remove the invasive wilding conifer trees in recent years, and on 10 October they spent their second day rejuvenating the area with native species.

The trunks of felled contorta pine trees​ formed a series of planting areas for the new trees, where they will grow to bolster the area's biodiversity and provide shelter for visitors.

In the spirit of sustainability, the new plantings were then protected with biodegradable guards that will break down as the trees grow and establish themselves.​ The planting day and efforts to remove wilding conifers are part of the Landscape Management Plan for Lake Camp and Clearwater Settlement that was adopted by the Council in October 2017.​
