Stainless steel storage tanks Stainless steel storage tanks are a common feature in the agricultural context of the Ashburton Plains. Stainless steel is a premium material of enduring quality, suitable for expressing the elevated civic importance of the council chamber.

Chamber form The council chamber is expressed in the Baring Square facade by a break in the timber colonade which runs along this frontage. An asymmetrically curved, full-height perforated steel screen is inserted in this gap, creating an external expression for the civic use within and providing privacy and shading.

Elevation sketch Structural 'A' frame

Stainless steel is a material of enduring quality, suitable for a space of civic importance and a contextual response to the agricultural landscape of the Ashburton Plains.

3D sketch Curved silo form

A parabolic opening is cut in the stainless steel screen, revealing a curved balcony extending from the chamber to provide connection with Baring Square.

The screen is supported on a primary 'A' frame structure, creating a playful and subtle reference to Ashburton.

COLLECTIONS The Library collection is split into clusters and arranged over the ground and first floor of the building. The level split allows for pairing of collection materials and adjacent activities that complement the intended atmosphere and acoustics of each floor. It is intended that the ground floor be a space of browsing, play, noise, and chat, while the first floor is a quieter, more reflective & contemplative ‘working’ floor.

Study Spaces – Dedicated large tables with chairs are located on both floors of the library for collective and individual use.

Casual Meeting - the leaner – Leaners against glazing, coupled with stools provide a quantity of seating for short catchups in smaller groups.

Lounging Spaces – Lounging spaces are located on the sunny, glazed edges of the building.

– These zones overlook adjacent external and interior spaces, allowing for passive observation, people watching and comfortable reading. On the ground floor they can open out and spill onto external areas.

Formal Meeting - the room – Bookable dedicated rooms for different functions are located on both floors.

SHELVING – The ‘rough’ and the ‘green’: looking to contrast densities of shelving and adjacent spaces that can change over time.

– Treating shelving as elements which are used to define spaces and activities within the overall library area.

– Shelving layouts which can be expanded or compressed to suit different shelving densities, instead of just the traditional rows.

– The physical collections remain a core resource for reading, information and enjoyment.

– About 50% of the total library space will be given over to the housing and display of these materials. The balance between nonfiction and fiction is expected to change over time and a 10% reduction in nonfiction shelving is allowed for.

– Merchandising approaches to display of materials will allow for face out display with the possibility of using end panels to display items.

– The majority of shelving for collection items will be a mix of 3 and 4 shelf high bays. Some areas within the library will be 5 shelves high, with relief formed by adjacent study and lounge areas.
