The current marketplace has standard lightposts across the parking lot, casting low light.

The community expressed their need for light: the project specifically addresses this with designed bollards to create an experience in the food truck area as art and light.

The physical state inside the current phoenix marketplace inspired more colors to exist and be apparent on the outside to capitalize on the same vibrancy and activity that exists on the inside.

The amaca (hammock) is a Hispanic symbol, wishing to integrate color and folklore to be recognized in an area with high concentration of Latino population, but not exclusive of the multicultural neighborhood.

The weaving pattern of the amaca (hammock) inspired the waves structure of the canopies as part of the response for shade and walkability.

The terracota tile is designed in large scale to intensify the scale of the roof system.

As part of engagement, members of phoenix marketplace would be asked to choose a color for the vibrancy of the teja (terracota tile) before construction.

This recognizes the community and highlights their participation in the design, uplifting the voice of those inhabiting the mercado.

MARKETPLACE | SPRING STUDIO 23’ | PROFESSOR CORELLA

Athedesign.

The studio encouraged a self-motivated project objective: mine visualized to design an architectural project and master plan that revitalizes Phoenix Marketplace in West Phoenix, receiving the local community’s opinion to guide the design.

The design actively expresses the dynamic relationship between the local market shop rentees and community through in person visits to the marketplace. The revitalization design proposal is a response to community needs, cultural integration, and well being.

G.TECH ADAPT

ADAPT + EXPAND | FALL STUDIO 23’ | PROFESSOR MCLEAN GROUP| VEDA PRANUTHI + SHIFA PADHIAR

The group responds to an architectural adaptation to the existing electrical and computer engineering building through design drivers upholding wellbeing for students, challenging the rigorous and demanding lifestyle held in the existing conditions.

The expansion, thus, merges the community for students to showcase their electrical and engineering innovation and highlight accessibility in movement and health.
