Another year has passed and it’s another Remembrance Sunday this 9 November.
The tradition of the Remembrance Parade in Oswestry, will be held on Sunday the 9th where all will gather on the Bailey Head at 10.30am. The Porthywaen Silver Band will lead to the Memorial Gates for a Remembrance service.
Let’s always honour members of the armed forces and civilians who have defended our freedom and protected our way of life.
“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Oswestry in Focus: Nature’s little forager by Graham Mitchell grahamsfmitchell
Celebrating Oswestry’s Gardens and Community
The Oswestry in Bloom Awards evening, held at Oswestry Memorial Hall on Smithfield Street in September, brought together the best of Oswestry’s gardens, shop displays, schools, and community projects. Over 120 attendees, including sponsors, businesses, residents, and school pupils, gathered to celebrate collective achievements and receive certificates and trophies across 14 diverse categories. Oswestry in Bloom is managed by a dedicated committee of volunteers and is strongly supported by Oswestry Town Council and Oswestry BID.
Natalie Bainbridge, Chair of Oswestry in Bloom, welcomed all present, expressing appreciation for the combined efforts that contribute to Oswestry’s success. She emphasised the importance of community pride and the positive impact of everyone caring for their own “little bit” of the town, which helps maintain Oswestry’s beauty for all to enjoy.
The event was hosted by ex-BBC presenter James Bond and professionally photographed by Graham (Grum) Mitchell. Special thanks were extended to sponsors and local businesses, each of whom support an award, reinforcing their bond with the community. Gratitude was also expressed to the judges and, in particular, the volunteers whose dedicated work ensures the town continues to thrive and bloom.

Tribute at RJAH for much-loved volunteer
A plaque has been placed at the front of the hospital to commemorate Roger Whitting, who gave his time generously as a volunteer with the League of Friends, as well as through his service with Rotary.
Roger was a familiar and friendly face around the hospital, where he supported patients and visitors, and often helped at fundraising events. His commitment and kindness touched the lives of patients, staff, and fellow volunteers alike.
In a particularly fitting touch, the plaque features a small spelling mistake – a deliberate nod to Roger’s dyslexia, something he always embraced with good humour and had written multiple books on. Those who knew him say he would have appreciated the light-hearted acknowledgement of something that was simply part of who he was.
Becky the salon owner has spent years training and perfecting her skills from her time at Toni and Guy specialising in creative cutting, colouring & balyage. Great length hair extensions and barbering: to her Wella master colour expert degree, which is recognised worldwide.
She aims to deliver the highest quality of service to her clients, whilst providing a welcoming and friendly atmosphere!
We also have beauty treatments available at the salon by the very talented Immy at Polished.

Community
Oswestry Climate
Action Hub 36 Bailey Street
The Share Shack 15 Bailey St
Have you ever wondered about these two premises in Oswestry?
Oswestry Climate Action Hub was started in early 2024 to help each other live more sustainably, create community and build resilience against climate change through local initiatives centred around making, sharing, growing and repairing.
Many groups and events take place there including a repair cafe on Wednesdays, a youth hangout after school on Fridays, monthly plant and clothes swaps, a brew club, sign language group, film nights, and meditation among others.
Everyone is welcome to drop in and share in this non-profit, community space. Feel free to browse our resources, use the art materials, borrow a book, take part in an organised activity, get information about local initiatives, or just come in for a sit down, a chat and a cuppa. At present the Hub is open from 11am Wednesdays and 10am Saturdays.
At 15 Bailey Street, we also run the Share Shack for donating and receiving good quality items. Take away what you need, bring back want you no longer want. In this way stuff doesn’t get sent to landfill, you consume less and save money! The shack is open Wednesday and Saturdays 10am -12pm.
The two spaces are completely volunteer run but we need more people to come forward to share in the
running of these. We would love to open more frequently but more volunteers are needed to do this. If you feel this is something you would be interested in please contact : oswestrycec@gmail.com
Help us to build a positive and inclusive community, open to all, through learning from each other and sharing our skills. Climate change will bring many future challenges. Will we be ready? Please join us.
It’s time for you to get involved again!
The awards are an opportunity to highlight those who have been giving it their all and deserve some extra special recognition for their hard work and behaviour.
With the addition of two pet awards this year, a total of fourteen awards are up for grabs, each one very kindly being sponsored by local businesses, charities or organisations. All you need to do is select your nominee and let us know why you decided to nominate them. Is there somebody in your local community who’s gone above and beyond?
Perhaps an unsung hero, showing exemplary behaviour, dedication and compassion? Then take a minute to vote for them and give them the recognition they deserve.
Voting is now open, and you have until mid-January 2026 to have your say, with winners being revealed in our March 2026 issue. Get your vote in now and show someone their hard work and efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Who’s your local unsung hero? Votes can be cast on the Oswestry Life Magazine website at www.oswestry.life.
A big thank you to all of the sponsors who are involved with the awards, without you this wouldn’t be possible. It really goes to show what an amazing community we live in.

Supporting Your Communities: Meet Community Resource
If you live in a rural village, care for a loved one, or simply want to feel more connected to your community, Community Resource is here to help. This long-standing charity is dedicated to helping people and communities thrive by offering practical support, trusted advice, and opportunities to get involved.
Community Resource supports those who are often overlooked or underserved. This includes older people experiencing loneliness, carers, individuals on low incomes, and communities facing isolation. At the heart of their mission is a commitment to building resilience, improving wellbeing, and strengthening local life.
The charity delivers a wide range of services that support health and wellbeing. These include health awareness events across the county and hearing and sight loss support hubs. Whether it’s supporting individuals with long-term health conditions, helping people access practical advice, or promoting wellbeing through community events, Community Resource is here to make a difference.
The charity’s Voluntary and Community Infrastructure Support team provides advice, guidance, and training to local charitable groups and organisations. Whether you are setting up a new community group or have been running one for years, Community Resource can help with funding promotion, volunteer brokerage, and more.
They support a network of Community Buildings and Village Halls across the county. These spaces are vital hubs for local activity, and the charity provides members with guidance, resources, and peer support to help them stay open, accessible, and sustainable.
Volunteering is another key part of their work. In partnership with Oswestry Community Action (Qube), Community Resource delivers a countywide volunteer brokerage scheme. This trusted programme connects individuals with meaningful volunteering opportunities that benefit both communities and volunteers.
Healthwatch Shropshire has recently joined the team at Community Resource. Healthwatch is the county’s
independent health and social care champion, making sure your voice is heard by NHS leaders and decisionmakers to improve care.
As the colder months approach, Community Resource is preparing to launch its annual Warmer Winter campaign. This fundraising appeal helps vulnerable people stay warm, well, and connected during winter. With energy costs continuing to rise and many rural homes off the gas grid, the need is more urgent than ever. The campaign raises funds to provide small but meaningful grants to individuals and families at risk of fuel poverty. Every donation helps bring warmth, comfort, and hope to those who need it most.
Local businesses play a vital role in supporting all of this work. Community Resource is proud to partner with organisations like Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury and Oswestry, whose ongoing support helps extend the charity’s reach and impact. Whether through fundraising, sponsorship, volunteering, or awareness-raising, corporate partnerships are a powerful way to give back to the community.
How you can get involved:
• Follow Community Resource on social media to stay up to date with campaigns, events, and opportunities
• Reach out by email if you or someone you know could benefit from their services
• Donate to the Warmer Winter campaign via their website or JustGiving page
• Volunteer your time and skills to support local projects and make a difference
• Community Resource is here for you, your neighbours, and your community. Whether you need support or want to offer it, they are ready to help.

Celebrating the Legacy of Ronnie
A New Blog Unearths a Lifetime of Writing and Wanderings
In November 2023, the community lost a quietly extraordinary voice with the passing of Ronnie, a long-time resident of Llanymynech and cherished member of BODs walking group. Known for her warmth, wit, and curiosity, Ronnie left behind a remarkable archive of writing, articles, diaries, and books that span decades and explore the delightfully unexpected.
From spoons and stiles to inkwells and roundabouts, Ronnie’s work captured the charm of everyday life with humour and insight. Alongside her husband Chris, she also documented their long-distance walking adventures, creating vivid, heartfelt records of the landscapes they loved.
Following her passing, her daughter Anne-Marie uncovered boxes of notebooks, files, and unpublished pieces, an overwhelming yet inspiring discovery. “I always knew Mum wrote a lot,” Anne-Marie said, “but the sheer volume was astonishing. I labelled it ‘to sort on a rainy day’ and that day finally came in January.”
The result is Ronnie’s Ramblings, a new online blog dedicated to sharing Ronnie’s writing with the world. Each post is paired with photographs from her personal collection, bringing her stories to life. The blog attracted over 1,100 views in its first month, supported by active Facebook and Instagram pages with a reach of 21,000.
Anne-Marie recently met local author Dave Andrews at Oswestry Library, who offered guidance and encouragement for future plans. “Dave was incredibly enthusiastic about Mum’s writing style,” she said. “I’m now preparing some of her longer, locally focused pieces for print this winter.”
The project is more than a tribute; it’s a living archive. Anne-Marie hopes that book sales and community support will help sustain the website annually. Any surplus funds will be donated to Llanidloes Memorial Hospital’s Garden Palliative Suites, where Ronnie received exceptional care in her final weeks. “Their kindness was phenomenal,” Anne-Marie added.
Ronnie’s Ramblings is a celebration of storytelling, memory, and the quiet brilliance of a life well lived. It invites readers to rediscover the world through Ronnie’s eyes—one spoon, stile, and scribble at a time.
Visit www.ronniesramblings.co.uk to read the blog.

A Brand for Bold Bikers: Moto TrackTech Takes the Lead
Based in Oswestry, Moto TrackTech Ltd is the go-to business for motorcycle enthusiasts. It’s a shop created for riders, by riders. Led by Josh and John, two passionate bikers who live and breathe the sport, they’re here to make sure every rider from casual cruisers to hardcore racers, has access to the parts, gear, and expertise they need to keep their bikes in top shape.
Josh and John opened Moto TrackTech’s doors in September, having found the local market was craving a one-stop shop for top-tier motorcycle accessories, and these two riders knew exactly how to deliver that. From CEapproved clothing, high-performance helmets and gloves to garage essentials, servicing parts, and premium fluids, they’ve got it all. Whether you’re prepping your bike for the cold months or getting ready for the next track day, Moto TrackTech has everything you need.
Maintaining the Bike Yourself?
For those who like to tinker and maintain their own machines, Moto TrackTech is a goldmine. The shop is equipped with garage mats, paddock stands, the essential Würth tools and a full range of chain maintenance products, brake fluids, and battery chargers.
Now we’re heading into the colder months, the team are keen to help you with advice about winter-proof your bike, helping you stay on top of things like oil changes and checking brake systems, which are critical at this time of year.
The Drive Behind the Brand
Moto TrackTech is focused on riders and what they need so, offering the best products is what drives the team behind the business.
Recently, they’ve introduced a new lineup that includes LS2 helmets, armoured AA-rated jackets and jeans, and Oxford accessories. And for those who love to go some mileage, they’ve also brought
in Nomad and Atlas soft luggage, aimed at riders who like to travel in style and comfort.
John says, “We’ve partnered with two of the UK’s leading parts suppliers, which means we can offer thousands of bike-specific products with next day delivery. This gives our customers access to premium brands like Pirelli, Michelin, NGK, DID, JT Sprockets, EBC Brake Pads, and more at competitive prices. Whatever you need, just ask us and we’ll do our best to track it down for you.”
Off-Road Riders
Josh and John know that the off-road community is huge in the area, and they’re committed to serving the needs of these riders too.
“Off-roaders need different servicing parts and fluids, and we’ve hand-picked the best brands to make sure they get the right gear for their machines,” says Josh. Whether it’s Motorex or Putoline oils for 4-stroke and 2-stroke bikes, or brake pads and spark plugs, Josh and John have the expertise to help trail and off-road riders with everything they need.
The team are always sharpening their skills to stay on top of the game. Recently, spending a full day training with industry giants RST, Arai, AGV, Motul, and Quad Lock to stay ahead of the curve and offer their customers the very best.
And it’s this kind of commitment that gives them customer reviews like this one from Steve M: “Picked up a few bits for touring – base layers, waterproofs and a new lid. All quality gear.”
Drop in for a look around and chat about what’s new in the world of bikes. After all, there’s no better way to spend the day than talking motorcycles with like-minded people.

Minutes with the MP
By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire
It feels like we reach this time of year quicker every year and I’m sure as the days get shorter, many people will be thinking about Halloween, Bonfire Night and the forthcoming festive break.
These highlights at the end of the year give us a chance to be with friends and family, and to support events in the community.
It’s also at this point in the year that we can start to look back on all that’s gone before. As the world becomes increasingly smaller, and global events dominate the daily news agenda, a sense of belonging seems more important than ever.
I’m proud to play my part as your MP in the community of Oswestry and North Shropshire. And when I look back on what I’ve been campaigning for this year, like better local health services, saving our Post Offices, improved road safety, or reliable rural connectivity, it seems there’s a lot the current Government has yet to get right.
But as my thoughts turn toward Christmas, I’m reminded that it’s a time to put differences aside. This year has seen greater division in our society than I think most of us would like to see.
So, I’m grateful that the thread of community runs like a seam through Oswestry and beyond. There is one constant, and that is our family and others around us where we live.
That’s amply underlined by the great work of local charities and organisations such as OsNosh, providing meals and fresh produce to the local community, saving food from going to waste and combatting food poverty locally.
The community’s rallying round following the devastating fire at St Martins School is another demonstration of the strength of the bond that we all share.
It’s these things that make our community special and as we go into the new year I’ll continue to stand up for the positive changes we want to see, both locally and nationally.
We want to help you create the most memorable event, from the tiny details to the extravagant gestures.
Oswestry Cricket Club can help you with your layout, decorations, music choices all the way up to your food options - be that a delicious menu or making way for your favourite caterer. Whatever your budget, we can help.
Our large, fully licensed bar is stocked with a wide range of drinks to suit everyone, including a great range of so drinks. If cocktails are your thing, we can work with you to create a great drinks list tailor-made for your event!
BRINGING YOU THE VERY BEST IN RAW, APPROPRIATE FOOD FOR YOUR CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS
Whether you are already a seasoned raw feeder or interested in switching your animals to a raw diet then we have everything you need and much more.
As well as our large range of top quality raw minces, chunks and bones we also supply air dried chews and natural treats as well as herbal supplements to complement a natural diet.
SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF RAW FEEDING:
■ Less Sensitivities ■ Great for allergy sufferers
HOW TO SURVIVE FIREWORKS AND A FEAR OF LOUD NOISES
Noise sensitivity and phobias are not unusual among our fur family. It’s easy to prepare for specific events eg firework displays, but unexpected loud noises are harder to navigate.
For scheduled noisy events, conventional vets may recommend anti-anxiety medication. Many of these are human antidepressant drugs, which can have nasty side effects, and work too slowly.
As ongoing preparation, try desensitising your pet by playing firework, traffic and thunder sounds, found on YOUTUBE, at low volume and gradually increasing over several weeks.
These ideas may help your pet relax:
• Stay home with your pet during events. Keep your pet indoors.
• Feed and give plenty of exercise earlier in the day, so they are tired.
• Close curtains to muffle sounds and block out firework/lightening flashes.
• Play calming/reggae/classical music or keep the TV on.
• Try pressure wraps, like a Thundershirt or T-Touch Wrap.
• Massage or snuggle your pet. Some claim this reinforces the fear, but FEAR IS AN EMOTION NOT A LEARNED BEHAVIOUR
Plenty of natural remedies may help take the edge off your pet’s noise fear.
by Graham Mitchell
MOST IMPORTANTLY, try them and see what works best for your pet. In and Around Oswestry
Essential oils. Always dilute with carrier oil before using them.
Let Your Pet Choose! Always let your pet sniff the unopened oil bottle first. If he turns away or shows he doesn’t like it, don’t use that oil. Offer 3 days in advance.
Don’t use diffusers unless your pets are able to leave the room if they’re uncomfortable.
• Lavender
• Neroli
• German chamomile for calming

New Early Years Provision at Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity Academy in Oswestry has proudly opened the doors to its brand-new nursery rooms — Ladybirds and Bumblebees — marking a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing commitment to supporting the youngest children in the local community.
Thanks to funding from the Department for Education’s School-Based Nursery Grant, the Academy has expanded its early years provision to now include babies from nine months and over, alongside two-year-old children. This development allows the school to offer continuous, highquality care and education from infancy through to the end of the primary phase, ensuring children experience a smooth and nurturing start to their learning journey.
The grand opening was attended by Sue Lovelock, Regional Director for the West Midlands at the Department for Education, and Gill Hamer, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Shropshire. They were joined by representatives from St Chad’s Academies Trust, local authority colleagues, Governors, the Church and members of the school and nursery teams, who have worked tirelessly over the past year to bring the project to fruition.
The new nursery rooms have been thoughtfully designed to create calm, engaging, and age-appropriate learning environments, enabling children to explore, discover, and develop their independence. Each space includes areas dedicated to sensory play, language development, and outdoor learning — all supported by highly qualified and caring early years practitioners.
Executive Principal, Laura Hopley, expressed her pride in the achievement and the dedication of her team:
“This project has been twelve months in the making and represents a real investment in our community’s future. The Ladybirds and Bumblebees rooms will provide a safe, inspiring and nurturing environment where children can take their very first steps into education. We hope this
provision will become a beacon of hope and opportunity for families across Oswestry and the surrounding areas.”
She continued:
“We are deeply grateful to the Department for Education for their support through the School-Based Nursery Grant, and to St Chad’s Academies Trust for their guidance and encouragement throughout this process. This has truly been a team effort, reflecting the shared vision and commitment of everyone involved.”
Andy Nicholls, school place planner, praised the school’s vision:
“It is fantastic to see how this funding has been used to expand early years provision in such a meaningful way. The team at Holy Trinity Academy have created something special that will have a lasting impact on children and families in the area.”
The opening of Ladybirds and Bumblebees marks a new chapter for Holy Trinity Academy and St Chad’s Academies Trust, reinforcing their joint mission to provide inclusive, high-quality education from the earliest stages. The provision also supports working parents in Oswestry by offering flexible, affordable childcare within a trusted school setting.
The Academy’s early years team will continue to work closely with families to ensure every child is supported to reach their full potential — socially, emotionally, and academically — from the very start of their learning journey.

A decade of flavour and friendship at Stef’s Deli
This year marks a proud and heart-warming milestone for one of Oswestry’s favourite independent businesses - Stef’s Deli. The popular local shop, owned and run by Stefan Varlinkov, is celebrating its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of flavour, hard work, and community spirit.
When Stefan first opened the doors to Stef’s Deli in April 2015, he had a simple dream: to bring a taste of his Eastern European heritage to Oswestry. What began as a modest store offering only Polish products soon grew into something much bigger - a meeting place for cultures, flavours, and friendships.
As word spread and customers kept coming back, the business expanded to accommodate its growing range. Today, Stef’s Deli proudly stocks an impressive selection of Bulgarian, Polish, Romanian, and Slovakian products, offering something special for everyone. From rich and creamy cheeses and aromatic spices to fine cured meats, traditional preserves, and irresistible sweets, every shelf tells a story of home, tradition, and quality.
Stef offers a superb choice of Bulgarian wines, renowned for their excellent quality and rich, distinctive taste.
One of the deli’s most beloved offerings is its traditional Bulgarian pastry ‘Banitsa’ - a flaky, cheesefilled delight that has quickly become a local favourite. Recently, the shop has also introduced 12 delicious flavours of cakes, each one crafted to tempt customers with its fresh taste and beautiful presentation. Whether you’re looking for an authentic Eastern European treat or something new to satisfy your sweet tooth, Stef’s Deli has something for everyone.
To complement its food selection, Stef’s Deli also offers a fine range of alcoholic beverages, including beer, vodka, and rakia - the traditional fruit brandy cherished across the Balkans. For wine lovers, there’s a superb choice of Bulgarian wines, renowned for their excellent quality and rich, distinctive taste. These wines have gained international recognition, and Stef’s Deli is proud to share them with both long-time enthusiasts and curious newcomers.
But it’s not just about food and drink. Over the years, Stef’s Deli has also grown into a community hub, providing a range of convenient everyday services that make life easier for local residents. Customers can take advantage of MoneyGram international money transfers, gas and electricity top-ups and mobile phone vouchersturning a quick shopping trip into a one-stop visit for both essentials and indulgences.
A big part of what makes Stef’s Deli so special is its friendly, multilingual staff, who are always ready to lend a hand or offer a recommendation with a smile. Whether it’s helping someone find a favourite product from back home or introducing a curious local to something new, their warm and welcoming approach has made the shop a true part of Oswestry’s community fabric.
Reflecting on the past decade, Stefan Varlinkov expresses pride and gratitude for how far Stef’s Deli has come. From a small, family-run business to a thriving, well-loved destination, the deli has stayed true to its roots - offering authentic products, personal service, and a genuine connection with the people it serves.
As Stef’s Deli looks ahead to the future, one thing remains certain: it will continue to be a place where cultures meet, flavours flourish, and everyone feels at home.
Here’s to the next ten years of Stef’s Deli - Oswestry’s own corner of Eastern Europe, where every visit is a warm welcome and every bite tells a story.

Full English breakfast hash
This is the ideal brunch dish – cooked in one pot and making the most of ingredients you’re likely to have in the fridge.
Ingred I ents
• Butter or oil for greasing
• 450g uncooked hash browns, defrosted
• 2 eggs
• Salt and pepper
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 onion, peeled and finely diced
• 2-3 sausages, sliced
• 4 rashers of bacon, diced
• 50g kale, chopped
• 2 tomatoes, diced
• 2-3 handfuls of grated Cheddar cheese
• 4 eggs
• 2-3 Opies Pickled Walnuts, thickly sliced
Opies Pickled Walnuts (390g) are available from most major supermarkets.
For more recipe inspiration using the Opies range of products, visit www.bennettopie.com.
method
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas mark 7. Lightly grease a shallow casserole dish.
2. Carefully break up the hash browns into a bowl using clean hands so they resemble grated cheese. Add the 2 eggs, season to taste and mix in well. Using your hands, line the casserole dish with the mixture, pushing it down using your fingertips to form a large solid ‘rosti’-type base. Place in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden and crispy.
3. Meanwhile, fry the onion in a little vegetable oil until softened, then add the sausages and diced bacon to the pan. Fry until coloured before adding the kale and cook for a further 5-6 minutes or until the kale has just wilted. When the hash brown base is ready, remove from the oven and spoon the sausage and bacon mixture on top, followed by the diced tomatoes and grated cheese. Finally, crack 4 eggs on top and finish with the pickled walnuts. Place back in the oven for 15 minutes or until the eggs are just cooked and the yolk is still runny.

• 2 ripe pears, diced
• 30g caster sugar
• 100g rolled oats
• 350ml almond milk (or milk of choice)
• 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
• 1 tbsp Opies Stem Ginger syrup

method
1. Poach the pears by placing them in a pan with the sugar. Cover with water and cook on a low heat until the sugar has dissolved and the pears are tender. Drain and place in a bowl or jar in the fridge.
2. In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, milk, pumpkin seeds and syrup, and grate over the ginger. Stir well to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
3. Add the chia seeds and a pinch of ground cinnamon to the mixture. Mix everything together until well combined. Cover the bowl and refrigerate it overnight, or for at least 4 hours, to allow the flavours to meld and the oats to soften.
4. Before serving, give the muesli a good stir and check the consistency. If it’s too thick, you can add a splash of milk to reach your desired thickness.
5. Serve the muesli in bowls topped with poached pears, pecans and a scattering of coconut flakes.
Paula Lane Brings Star Power and Heart to Oswestry Short Film
When actress Paula Lane, best known to millions as Kylie Platt from Coronation Street and more recently Ella Forster in Emmerdale, first heard about a short film project being developed by Oswestry based Rocking Horse Media, she couldn’t have predicted how deeply it would capture her imagination or how her involvement would transform it into a story of serendipitous opportunity and creative collaboration.
The film, Holly & Ivy, is the latest project from Rocking Horse Media, and raises awareness of teenage eating disorders and checking in on others even though they might seem ‘ok’. The short has been offering hands-on work experience for local students, giving them the kind of industry insight that’s normally out of reach for young people outside major cities.
open to possibility and are really wanting their short film to do well. They were delightful.”
But the way Paula was first introduced to Holly & Ivy was, in itself, like something out of a film. During a routine location recce to find a suitable rural cottage for the project Holly & Ivy, creator Gareth Owain David Thomas stumbled upon one such cottage that was not only perfect but even shared the same name as the cottage in his own script!
For Paula, signing on as Executive Producer was about getting involved and supporting the young students. “The fact this has two female leads who are just starting out and really keen to start out in this industry, really got my attention. I wanted to offer my expertise, and the students are really
But, as if that wasn’t enough of a chance coincidence, little did he know who would be waiting for him inside. None other than soap star, Paula Lane who just so happened to be visiting family in the area. Despite having not long left Emmerdale, she was genuinely invested in supporting the project - a twist worthy of television. Paula even shared the chance encounter with her 136K Instagram followers, describing it as serendipity.
“It’s one of those moments where everything just aligns,” says Gareth, founder of Rocking Horse Media. “The impact that Paula, a national soap star, has been able to have on a local work experience project and its young people is incredible. And the fact it all happened as a result of the most bizarre chance encounter is almost magical. It’s serendipity in motion.”
Paula is passionate about supporting young people and opportunities outside the usual spotlights. “I’ve been working with youngsters for over 10 years with my own academy and with a bit of encouragement and a bit of help, I know big things can open up for people. I’m a big believer in opportunities and things coming up in your path when you least expect them. You don’t know where these things can lead.”
The film stars two 15-year-old local actresses, Betty Carter and Emily Stephenson, both taking on their first on-screen lead roles as part of the project. Beyond the film itself, its true success lies in the people it brought together; from students finding their voice and telling a message that matters, to a national TV star using her platform to create lasting impact.
For Oswestry, Holly & Ivy is proof that even the smallest stories can bloom into something extraordinary when opportunity and creativity come together in perfect harmony. Not to mention serendipity.
Not all romances are as intense as Romeo and Juliet’s or have a scenic setting like Verona. 2021’s ‘Ali & Ava’ has its lead characters finding later life love in the distinctly unscenic setting of a deprived estate in Bradford but is no less affecting for it.
of the month november 2025
‘Sherwood’ stars Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook play Ali and Ava, a landlord and a teaching assistant whose path to love navigates music, loss, separation, domestic violence and racism without ever being heavy handed or depressing. Harsh realities are never ignored and the character’s flawed and messy lives are honest and relatable. Director Clio Barnard fashions some beautiful, and surprisingly cinematic, scenes of warmth and intimacy in a film that’s greatness creeps up on you slowly. I think you’ll love it.

Patience is a virtue –New Cineam Update
...and to quote another proverb, good things come to those who wait. But at last, Oswestry’s new Maona cinema is with us. And proprietor Tatenda Jamera is pledging something for everyone.
You can expect a mixed schedule, from blockbusters to classics, from the popular National Theatre showings to showcasing local film-makersand with targeted strands aimed at audiences of youngsters to oldies...and everyone in between!
The cinema will grow around the audience as time goes by, with enhancements ongoing to make a bijou independent cinema that Oswestry can be proud of. But the important thing is that Tatenda’s labour of love is finally seeing the light of day.
Do spread the word: getting people familiar with Maona and enjoying films in an audience will help ensure this exciting venture can succeed and thrive and be with us in Oswestry for a long time to come.
Jonty Gentoo: The Adventures of a Penguin
by Julia Donaldson (illustrated
by
Axel Scheffler)
this is a delightfully rhythmic journey that balances whimsy and education with rare finesse. In just forty pages, Donaldson crafts a determined little penguin’s quest from his zoo to the South Pole, taking a detour through the North and relying on unexpected friendships to guide him.
Scheffler’s illustrations are expressive, accessible, and richly detailed. The rhymes flow naturally, inviting read-aloud interaction and with its blend of adventure, heart, and facts about terns and penguins, this is a warmly engaging title for ages 4–8.
On Selattyn Hill

Morning mist stroked frosty slopes And all was still on Selattyn Hill as I, high in the tower, before dawn, before people rose to face the day, witnessed an unmanned moment, just birds, sheep, trees, the eternal peace Prince Gwên, lying over there, has felt for a thousand years.

Overcoming ‘Gymtimidation’
Confidence. A barrier many people face when looking to join a gym. Confidence in oneself, one’s ability and even feeling secure in an unfamiliar environment.
‘Gymtimidation’ is real and not uncommon, in fact it’s one of the biggest deterrents to starting a fitness journey, and yet it can be overcome more easily than you might think. I remember the first time I walked into a gym, instantly being exposed to a wide range of machines, handles, attachments and weights, with no clue where to start. However, it is in this temporarily vulnerable moment that we open ourselves up to a new and exciting journey.
The truth is, confidence is not something we need when starting the gym – it’s something we develop over time. Your first workout does not need to be, and will not be, perfect; it’s about starting small and consistently progressing with every rep and set. Here at Coach House Fitness, we are committed to helping you develop
confidence. It’s built into our mission of improving all aspects of our members’ physical and mental health. Inductions and personalised training programmes help to set goals and create a plan for each visit, something that is vital for building confidence. A focused programme provides guidance, security in your progress and a real sense of achievement on completion. Other confidencebuilding options are signing up to an exercise class or bootcamp, where you can be sure everyone is watching the instructor rather than you and enjoy the camaraderie of group training. Or if you prefer solo training, you could work one-to-one with a private personal trainer for the highest level of completely tailored, non-judgemental support.
Many gym users probably started where you may be now – unsure and overwhelmed. The key to their progress is consistency. With the support of committed instructors, members who show up regularly soon gain a sense of purpose, satisfaction and belonging, and you can achieve this too.

Decluttering stress
When you think of stress relief what springs to mind? Meditation, a long walk, soak in the bath? What about the impact your home has on your stress levels? Research shows higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol in those with a cluttered home, due to overstimulation of our senses and an inability to relax.
Clutter steals our time too – looking for keys, clothes, paperwork, eats into our day reducing the time for relaxation and physical activity, which ultimately has a negative impact on our health. So, what can you do to tackle the clutter? A favourite resource of mine is ‘The Organised Method’ – a simple system of dividing housework into smaller jobs taking 30mins a day and freeing up your weekends for fun stuff. Take the Clutter Buster challenge to help you be able to follow the method and clean effectively: www.theorganisedmum.blog.
Perhaps you struggle to organise in the traditional way so systems never last and clutter builds up? Take this test to find out what style of organising would work for you and work to your strengths! https://clutterbug.me/what-clutterbugare-you-test
Alternatively, you could hire Oswestry based Sorted Spaces – let Charlotte and Louise provide organisation, decluttering and interior design to transform your space, free up your time and declutter your mind. Call 07989 811543.
So, you’ve worked on the physical clutter around your home, could you use some help with the mental clutter? Mens Mental Health Support Club meet in Oswestry every Wednesday, call Danny Evans for information, 07535 780357 ommh.org.uk.

Meditation: Finding Calm, One Breath at a Time
by Jenna Ward, Personal Growth Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
I’ve practiced meditation consistently for 13 years now, though my mum unknowingly introduced me to it as a child. It came to me when I was anxious, overwhelmed, and lost - my nervous system strained, my heart hurting. What began as a way to find clarity and calm soon became something I loved. It stayed because I loved the ritual, the sense of connection, and the moments of insight that arose from simply sitting in stillness.
A common misconception is that meditation means switching off the mind or having no thoughts. Not so! Our minds are designed to think, and that’s valuable in the right circumstances. Meditation isn’t about stopping thoughts; it’s about changing our relationship with them.
Learning to let them come and go without being consumed by them.
Meditation can be so simple, just one deep, conscious breath. There are numerous types of meditation: sitting in silence, chanting, repeating a mantra, loving-kindness, walking slowly and feeling each step. It can involve breath, body, sound, or visualisation, guided or quiet. The essence is focus; the choice to return to the present moment rather than letting the mind run riot.
It’s about practice, not perfection. Our attention will wander (mine often does), but as Sharon Salzberg says, “the moment you realise you’ve been distracted is the magic moment.” That awareness gives us the chance to begin again.
The benefits I’ve felt are profound. Meditation has softened anxiety and
helped me move through overwhelm more quickly. It’s shown me just how many unhelpful thoughts arise daily, giving me the power to let them go, change them, or explore them with curiosity. Most of all, it’s offered me steadiness. No matter where I am, I can always return to that inner space of peace with a single conscious breath. Join me for an Introduction to Meditation & Journaling workshop, Thursday 13 Nov, 6:308:30pm, £20. You can email me at jennawardcoaching@gmail.com to book.

All A level biology students learn about Watson and Crick. Most people think they discovered Deoxyribonucleic acid (you can see why it’s called DNA!) but that was Miescher in 1869. What Watson and Crick did, in 1953, was describe the famous double helix and 5 base structure that explained how DNA could hold so much information. DNA is the building site for gene expression. It was even crucial to how you developed – how does a brain cell know to become a brain cell and develop inside your skull? DNA tells cells how to do this - it’s like a cook book on how to make a human with its chapters all marked out and referenced. Why is this so exciting?
Did you see the recent news about Huntington’s disease? By inserting a new gene directly into the brain there is the potential for cure of this terrible illness. Did you know that a lot of human insulin is
made by a gut bacterium that has the relevant gene inserted into it and now acts as an insulin factory? It is now possible to locate a particular gene in your DNA, cut it out and then arrange for it to be delivered to the right cell where it can be inserted and correct a faulty gene – that’s science for you: magical at times. There are a host of illnesses that are the target of gene therapists ambitions: various cancers, parkinsonism, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, HIV, haemophilia and many more. All of this made possible because we understand DNA’s potential a bit more.
What was your guess for the GENES you possess? The answer is only 20,000 which, considering your complexity, is surprisingly few. Well, DNA isn’t just a pretty shape, it communicates with itself, editing itself, so it can do different things depending on which chapter of the book it is reading! Amazing!
Law firm helps light the way for dark runners to raise funds for sick children
Last month, a cuttingedge local law firm with a reputation for keeping its feet firmly on the ground when it comes to handling client cases, encouraged participants to lift their feet off the ground in the Chirk Castle Dark Run.
GHP legal, a longtime supporter of local charities and sporting and fitness events, is one of the main sponsors of the event which took place on Saturday 18 October in aid of Hope House Children’s Hospice. It was the sixth year that the event took place in the stunning grounds of Chirk Castle. Around 400 people were expected to take part, all lighting up the castle and grounds with glow sticks and torches in a night of fun and fundraising.
GHP Legal, which has offices in Oswestry, Llangollen and Wrexham, sponsored items for the goodie bags to be given out to participants at the end of the run, including glow-in-the-dark medals.
GHP Legal partner, Emma Simoes, said, “The 4km Chirk Dark Run aims to raise many thousands of pounds to support Hope House Hospice, which relies on such donations for its continuing provision of expert care for seriously ill children living in Shropshire, North and Mid Wales and Cheshire. As part of our commitment to our local community, GHP Legal is proud to have been a sponsor of the Chirk Dark Run since its inception.”

Inspirational charity meeting businesses at special Oswestry event
How do you raise millions of pounds every year to keep one of Shropshire’s most inspirational charities thriving?
The secrets of Hope House Children’s Hospices’ fundraising success will be among the fascinating topics being shared at a forthcoming business event in Oswestry.
Organised by Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, the Women in Business event will feature a talk from Vicky Bradbeer, area fundraiser for Hope House and Ty Gobaith hospices.
Kate Lawson, of Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office, said, “We are delighted to be welcoming Vicky, who will explain the challenges of raising the £10 million needed each year to keep the charity running.
“Hope House and Ty Gobaith hospices provide specialist care and support for children with lifethreatening conditions and their families across Shropshire, Cheshire, and North and Mid Wales.
“Vicky has been a fundraiser at Hope House for over two years and will share insights into the life-changing
work of the charity and how the local community and businesses can play a crucial part in supporting the work they do - both financially and practically.
“Although these events are called ‘Women in Business’, they are very much open to everyone and we love seeing a wide range of people from a variety of professions and business backgrounds.
“They were established to bring together like-minded people to hear inspiring stories about their community, as well as providing an opportunity to make new connections.”
The next event, with Vicky from Hope House, will take place at The Wynnstay Hotel on Thursday, November 6, from 1pm to 2.30pm, with hot drinks and biscuits available.
Places are free but advance booking is advised by going to bit.ly/OswestryWomeninBusinessNov2025 - or you can email info@lblaw.co.uk or pop into the Lanyon Bowdler offices in Church Street.

Create a chic but useful area for kicking off footwear, doing the laundry or storing kitchen essentials.
When creating a laundry room, boot room or pantry, the key to success is carefully planned design that takes into account your needs, available space and your home’s style.
Perfectly practical pantries
If you don’t live in an older property with a built-in pantry for storing food and kitchen kit, consider carving off a section of your kitchen, utility or hallway to create one. It can be small but should adjoin your kitchen so that grabbing an ingredient is quick and easy. You’ll need a sturdy worktop, shelves above and utensil rails and drawers below.
If a separate room isn’t possible, an easy alternative is a free-standing pantry cupboard (vintage or new) in the kitchen.
Transform a hallway with this painted storage unit, featuring a tongue-and-groove back panel with a row of five oak pegs and a bench seat with cubby holes below. Haldane hallway storage unit, £995, Cox & Cox; www.coxandcox.co.uk.
Make light work of laundry
A washing machine can be moved into a bathroom, landing cupboard with sliding doors, under the stairs, into a dressing room, garage or large cloakroom. This way, drying clothes and laundry paraphernalia can be kept out of sight, and you won’t have to listen to the spin cycle when cooking supper.
Budget allowing, it’s lovely to hide the washing machine – and tumble dryer, too, if you have one –behind sleek, built-in cabinetry. Add a waterproof worktop, a tiled splashback and a shelf above for detergents and other items. A tall space for storing the ironing board and hanging clothes is ideal, but you can get away with a rail attached to the bottom of a shelf for shirts. A great addition is a ceiling-mounted drying rack with a pulley.
Shoes, boots and more
Even without a dedicated boot room, you can still create an organised way of storing footwear, coats and umbrellas in your hallway or a utility. If you haven’t got moppable flooring, add a washable rug. Consider tongueand-groove panelling, tiles, tough vinyl wallpaper or a hard-wearing, wipeable paint for the lower portion of the walls.
A row of sturdy hooks is essential for coats. A high shelf above is handy for hats and how about a bench seat with storage of different heights underneath for shoes and boots? Just add a tall basket for umbrellas.
This stylish free-standing pantry has deep and shallow shelf space for bottles, jars, pickles and spices, with drawers and a wine rack below. Chester double larder in Forest Green, £1,499, The Cotswold Company; www.cotswoldco.com.

Lighting uP oswestRy
For the past eight years, Matt Owen Electrical Services has been lighting up Oswestry, quite literally. What began in October 2017 as a one-man operation has grown into a trusted, family-run limited company employing local people, training local apprentices, and supporting the community that helped it thrive.
From its small beginnings, owner Matt Owen built his business around one simple promise: to deliver quality electrical work with honesty, reliability, and pride. In July 2018, the business officially became Matt Owen Electrical Services Ltd, a reflection of both its growing reputation and the increasing demand for its expertise.
Today, the team handles everything from small kitchen or bathroom refurbs and lighting upgrades to large-scale commercial projects for major clients such as Aico, Kronospan, Cupra, and Skoda. Whether it’s fitting a light switch or powering an entire industrial space, every project receives the same attention to detail and commitment to safety that has become the company’s hallmark.
LocaL Roots, LocaL taLent
What truly sets Matt Owen Electrical Services apart is its dedication to Oswestry and its people. Over the years, Matt has offered five apprenticeships to local residents, giving young people the chance to gain hands-on experience, industry-recognised qualifications, and a career they can be proud of.
“It’s something we’re extremely proud of,” says Matt. “Oswestry has given me and my family so much, so being able to train local apprentices and watch them grow into talented electricians is incredibly rewarding.”
And that community-first attitude extends far beyond the workplace. The company has consistently supported local charities and grassroots sports teams, sponsoring clubs such as Ellesmere, Morda, Weston Rhyn, St Martins, Guilsfield FC, and Nathan Leonard
Football Coaching. More recently, Matt Owen Electrical Services carried out the electrical work and sponsorship for the new Ace Padel Club in Weston Rhyn, helping to bring another vibrant facility to the area.
The business has also backed The Movement Centre and proudly sponsored the Oswestry Show, continuing its long-standing partnership with Oswestry Life, running monthly adverts for eight years!
a Job to RemembeR
Of all the projects completed over the years, one stands out for Matt: the electric vehicle charger installation at Aico.
“That was my favourite job,” he says. “Aico share the same values we do, supporting local people, local charities, and local business. Even though they’re an international company, they care about the community here in Oswestry. Working with them to deliver a project that supports sustainability and innovation was something I’m really proud of.”
The Aico installation also represents the company’s growing focus on renewable energy and greener technology. As the demand for electric vehicles rises, Matt Owen Electrical Services has been at the forefront of providing EV charger installations, from specifying the right equipment to complete, professional fitting. It’s part of their mission to help Oswestry move towards a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.
tRusted, PRofessionaL, and aLways LocaL
Whether it’s a new lighting design, a home rewire, or a full-scale electrical fit-out, Matt Owen Electrical Services continues to combine modern expertise with traditional values. Every project is completed by qualified local staff who understand that reputation is built on reliability.
Eight years in, the business has grown in size and scope, but the focus remains the same…offering excellent quality workmanship.
As Matt puts it, “We might work on big jobs across Shropshire and beyond, but our heart will always be in Oswestry. It’s our home and where our story began.”

November in the garden
by Graham Mitchell
And just when you think it’s time to put your feet up, I’m here to remind you of the jobs that need doing this month! The nights are drawing in, so there isn’t much chance of getting much work done in the evenings. Everything is dying back and those annual climbers such as sweet peas, morning glory and nasturtium, need to come out. With the warm spell in September, I had lots of seedlings appearing, but the frost put paid to that and slowed down the spring bulbs that had an early wake-up call. Talking of which, now is a good time to plant tulips. Plant in clumps and plant deep, about twice the height of the bulb for best results.
We’ve had some strong winds lately and parts of the garden are now swathed in fallen leaves. Most will rot down nicely in the compost bin, or you can bag up and let them decompose for future use as a mulch. Remember oak leaves and others like holly, rot slowly and can take several years to compost. For quick composting shred the leaves with a strimmer or mower. The fallen leaves are also a good place for pests to overwinter so a good reason to clear away.
I’m finishing tying in my climbers for the winter ahead. As the frosts cut down the dahlias, lift them and store in a cool dark place until next spring. Geraniums are all away now and will give me some early colour next year. Thinking ahead to 2026, now’s the time to get the currants and gooseberries into a manageable shape and size cutting out the unproductive old wood. Giving some room inside the bush aids ripening and makes it so much easier come harvest-time.
Last year we had snowfall in November so it’s good to be prepared. Waterlogged pots tend to explode in very low temperatures, so check and clear drainage holes. Keep an eye on wildlife too, they may need extra help if we get a cold snap.

Nuts about trees
By Caroline Knight
Hazel trees
Hazelnuts are probably the easiest nut trees to grow but you’ll need at least two for pollination. You’d be wise to buy a Corylus avellana cultivar, because the native tree can grow up to 12 metres tall, with a spread of 8 metres. Harvest the nuts when the husks turn yellow.
Most gardens can only cope with a smaller variety of nut tree. Luckily, there are dwarf cultivars available.
Walnut trees
The common walnut, Juglans regia, can reach a height of 30 metres. The cultivar Juglans regia ‘Broadview’ is more compact and should grow only up to 8 metres. Harvest the walnuts between late August and November, once the green hulls turn darker and crack open. They can be eaten raw, dried in a low oven or pickled.
Sweet chestnut trees
Castanea sativa, or Spanish chestnut, can reach a height of up to 35 metres. The nuts are used for chestnut stuffing and roasting. Smaller cultivars such as C. ‘Marron de Lyon’ produce fruit at a younger age. It’s best to wait until the nuts in their spiky cases fall to the ground.
Almond trees
Almonds are a type of Prunus. Native to North Africa and the Mediterranean, they’re not ideally suited to the UK climate. Cultivars such as ‘Ingrid’ work better. Trees produce beautiful blossom in March and green fruit by the end of May. The fleshy covering gradually dries and then splits to reveal the almond seed, encased in a shell.

FINDING FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE AFTER DIVORCE
Divorce is rarely straightforward. Beyond the emotional toll, it often brings a wave of practical challenges - especially when it comes to money. From untangling joint accounts to rethinking longterm plans, the financial side of separation can feel overwhelming. But with the right support, it is possible to have a clearer sense of what’s achievable - and how to get there.
Know where you stand Start by understanding your financial position. This means reviewing joint accounts, savings, debts, and investments to get a clear picture of where things stand. It’s not just about adding up the figures, it’s about knowing what’s yours, what’s shared, and what will need discussing.
Rebuilding your budget Once things begin to settle, reassess your day-to-day finances. Your income, outgoings and lifestyle may all look different post-divorce. A realistic budget will help you stay in control and avoid unnecessary stress. It’s also a good time to revisit things like insurance policies and estate plans - often overlooked, but essential to safeguarding your future.
Property decisions that matter Homes and shared assets are some of the most emotionally charged - and financially significant - parts of a divorce. Whether you’re considering selling, buying out your partner, or exploring other options, it helps to understand how each path could affect your longterm finances.
Don’t overlook your pension Similarly, pensions can be one of the largest assets in a marriage. Navigating sharing arrangements for these takes careful thought, and having someone to explain your options can help keep your retirement plans on track.
Moving forward with confidence Divorce may mark the end of one chapter, but it also the beginning of another. Whether you’re weighing up financial decisions or trying to make sense of the changes ahead, speaking to an independent financial adviser can make things feel more manageable and help you move forward.
If you’d like help to make sense of your options, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

Q&A

James Denton
Q: I joined a gym after moving into the area. I had to sign up to a year’s membership, but after 2 visits in 2 weeks decided it wasn’t for me as I was less fit than I’d thought. I asked to cancel the membership but my request was refused. I queried the ‘cooling off’ period but was told it did not apply because I had already used the gym. I was really upset and cancelled my standing order, but now I have received a notice from debt collectors. What should I do?
A: The attitude of the Gym seems very unreasonable since you only visited twice, and especially as you wanted to cancel because you decided after trying it out that it was too physically challenging for you. However, what you should not do is ignore the debt collectors as this could result in more serious problems.
You should write to the Gym Manager/owners stating all the circumstances surrounding your decision to cancel, i.e. your health concerns and the fact that you made the decision to cancel after just two weeks. Say that in line with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) guidelines you are challenging their contract as unfair because it appears not to allow for cancellation due to changed circumstances.
Meanwhile, you should respond to the debt collectors in writing, stating that you firmly dispute the debt for the same reasons as stated to the gym manager. If they start to harass you without resolving the issues, you can report them to Trading Standards.
If both the gym and the debt collectors fail to resolve the issue to your satisfaction you should request from both of them proof of the debt and evidence that their terms were fair and not misleading. Under the terms of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 such contract terms must be clear and not unfairly weighed against the consumer. If necessary, seek further advice from a solicitor or Citizens Advice.
