Sir John Holman takes on his second year as ASE’s President, guiding and shaping the focus of our work and the support of our members. At the Annual Conference, John Holman will be exploring ‘Science Education: Building the essential skills for a successful career.’ Thursday 1pm

Back in Time for School

Kristy Turner starred in the BBC’s ‘Back in Time for School’, which took a group of teenagers and teachers through over 100 years of education: beginning with making photographic flashes in the Victorian age and ending with the ‘back to basics’ curriculum of John Major. Kristy will present her thoughts on the changes across the century. Friday 9am

Why we’re writing women scientists back into history

Dr Jess Wade, a physicist at Imperial College London, set herself a challenge - to add the missing women of science to Wikipedia. Jess will be joined by Dr Claire Murray, from the Diamond Light Source, to explore how the lives and work of female scientists can be brought into the classroom to inspire girls in STEM. Saturday 2pm

Oftsed: The New Education Inspection Framework

Matthew Newberry, HMI at Ofsted, will offer reflections on the first term of inspections under the new Framework. Friday 1pm Matthew will also host workshops to extend discussions with primary and secondary teachers. Saturday from 10.45am

Improving Secondary Science - EEF

The Education Endowment Foundation has published seven recommendations for improving science in secondary schools. Emily Yeomans will present the most effective ways schools can improve results and so tackle this country’s stark science attainment gap.

IMPROVING SECONDARY SCIENCE Guidance Report

Using Research in the Classroom

There are no quick fixes to the challenges of developing evidence-based practice; it remains difficult for teachers to access, review and implement principles emerging from research. Best Evidence Science Teaching (BEST) aims to transform evidence into practice by making research-informed teaching resources freely available. Alistair Moore from University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG) will explore how BEST resources can help teachers to develop research-informed approaches in the seven main areas identified by the EEF Improving Secondary Science report.

Institute of Physics - Paul Hardaker

Paul Hardaker, the Chief Executive of the Institute of Physics, will look at ‘Physics for a changing society’. By the time of the ASE Annual Conference, the 31 October deadline will have passed.

“We know well – all the evidence shows – that physics is hugely beneficial to the UK economy and society, and we want to ensure the UK remains worldleading whatever the political outcome.” Discover the path Paul sees for physics in 2020. Friday 1.30pm

ASE has taken on the coordination of Science on Stage UK, which brings together inspiring teachers to share their ideas as part of the biennial, international Science on Stage festival www.ase.org.uk/scienceonstage. Stuart Farmer will showcase some of the best ideas with the UK delegates at the Science on Stage Festival, being held in Portugal in November 2019. Friday 2pm

ASE Annual Conference Preview 2020

For the Annual Conference, ASE brings together sessions on all areas of science education, but each year there are specific themes we think are of particular relevance to current teaching and learning. Here are some highlighted sessions that explore those key themes.

Outdoor learning

Included in its support for Outdoor learning, ASE has published: Best Practice guidance, ITE resources, a guide to taking the new curriculum outside, and many more resources across our journals and website: www.ase.org.uk/outdoor-science. You can find more ideas and support in Conference sessions:

Planning for Outdoor Learning in Primary Science

Early Career Teachers

January will see the first anniversary of the publication of the Government’s ‘Early Career Framework’. We have some sessions that look at specific ideas for supporting new science teachers.

Science for Early Career Teachers Matt Livesey, Bradford Grammar School, will lead a discussion with trainees, NQTs, RQTs and early career teachers from both primary and secondary settings to share good practice. The perfect chance for both new teachers and those supporting new teachers to get ideas on how to survive and develop. Friday 12pm

Teaching about Managing Risk for Early Career Teachers Funded by Gatsby Charitable Foundation, CLEAPSS has developed a resource for secondary ITE and Teaching Schools to help them guide student teachers in how to manage risk for practicals. The aim is to reduce any barriers to practicals for Early Career Teachers by giving them the confidence and understanding to manage risk assessment for the practicals they want to carry out. Friday 3pm

Engaging Pre-service Teachers in Practical Work Being able to plan for pupil learning through the use of effective practical work is a vital skill for new teachers.

How can we help student teachers plan practical tasks? Effective support will not only improve science in the classroom, but it will help shape and inform the identity of the young teacher as an advocate for science education. Friday 10.30am

Linked to the new Ofsted Framework, consider how to plan meaningful outdoor learning experiences as part of your science curriculum. Helen Spring will lead practical activities and explore assessment opportunities in the outdoor setting.

Please dress for the weather, as we will be outdoors for a significant part of the session! Saturday 1.40pm

Outdoor Science Claire Holmes from Windermere School will show how to use the outdoor classroom to develop an approach to the KS3 science curriculum. Get outside, explore ideas to enrich science in everyday lessons, and see how any space can be used. Saturday 10.30am

Earth Science Out of Doors Join the Earth Science Teachers Association team for a tour of the interactive Earth science teaching activities available on the campus within a few metres of the lab door. Wednesday 12.10pm

Mobilising ‘Place’?

Rachel Cook presents her PhD work from King’s College London, exploring the role of family culture in shaping black African girls’ engagement with primary science in outdoor settings. Gain an insight into the factors from home life that affect engagement and get suggestions for how science can be made more inclusive and widen participation in outdoor settings. Wednesday 12.10pm

‘Soft Skills’

An important area across all education is the development of the skills learners will need in future employment. Science can play a vital part in developing these skills through enquiry and investigation. There are many sessions that explore the skills through science; here is just one example:

Extended Practicals and Soft Skills Considering Gatsby’s ‘Good Practical Science’, Lisa Niven, All Saints RC School, looks at developing extended practicals at KS5, and shows why having no expected outcomes is worthwhile. Develop students’ enquiry skills and plan how to increase their science capital. Friday 4pm

Getting to Reading The ASE Conference is at the heart of the Whiteknights Campus, University of Reading.

How to get there The University of Reading is easy to get to by: Rail: Trains from London Paddington to Reading run approximately every 15-20 minutes throughout the day and the average journey time is around 30 minutes. There are direct rail links from many major cities, including Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Bristol, and Exeter. Once you arrive at Reading station our ASE stewards will be ready to greet you and assist you in catching the bus to campus (21 and 21A), which runs every 15 minutes.

Air: RailAir coaches run from Heathrow Airport direct to Reading station, every 20 minutes and the journey time is approximately 45 minutes. There are trains to Reading from Gatwick Airport every hour. The journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Road: There is very limited parking at Reading University on Wednesday-Friday. If you are driving, the sat nav postcode for Whiteknights campus is RG6 6UR.

Creating a platform for teachers Have you ever thought of presenting at the ASE conference? Would you like a taste of the experience without committing to leading a full session?

The ASE 11-19 Committee will be hosting two “New Voices” sessions at the 2020 Annual Conference (on the Friday and Saturday afternoons).

These sessions are for current classroom teachers who would like to gain experience presenting at a conference in a supportive environment.

They will give presenters and audience the chance to enjoy sharing ideas straight from the classroom.

If you are interested in presenting a 15 to 20 minute slot in a chaired session, please do get in touch. We do not need a formal proposal, just an indication of the topic you would like to present.

Help research come alive in your classroom By signing up to the Royal Society Schools Network you will have first-hand access to the latest opportunities and resources for use in the classroom, covering age 5 – 18 education. Whether it is accessing funding via our Partnership Grants scheme, attending the Summer Science Exhibition, using the Brian Cox school experiments or hearing about the latest scientific research and education policy, we are committed to supporting teachers across the STEM subjects.

PARTNERSHIP GRANTS SCHEME Funding of up to £3,000 is available to enable pupils across all Key Stages to carry out investigative research projects in all STEM subjects. The funding, which is used to purchase equipment not normally found in UK schools, must be applied for in partnership with a STEM professional (from academia or industry).

THE SUMMER SCIENCE EXHIBITION The Society’s annual exhibition will be back in July 2020 and schools can book to bring students aged 14+ to our Inspiring Science days. Alternatively, schools can book to bring sixth form students to our new My Future in Science days, which feature a special networking session alongside the exhibition.

The heart of the Association for Science Education is its members: teachers, technicians and advisers who are committed to delivering high-quality science education to all learners.

Science education voice The ASE plays a significant role in promoting excellence in teaching and learning of science in schools and colleges. The ASE is an independent body influencing policy and tackling the challenges in science teaching: representing the voice of its members and working closely with the science professional bodies, government, industry and business.

Regional networks ASE is active in all regions across the UK thanks to a dedicated team of Field Officers and the enthusiasm of local members. There is a regular programme of regional CPD and networking events open to all teachers, both members and non-members. Events include twilight science TeachMeets.

Expert commitment The work of ASE is led by the expertise and passion of its member-run committees.

The nine committees focus on resources, projects and advice in their specialist area. This includes: the Primary and 11-19 groups who focus on supporting classroom teachers and senior leaders; the Research group contributes to journals, conferences and books; while the Science Technicians’ Committee organises the annual National Technicians’ Conference.

Professional Learning Journey ASE works to promote and support the professionalism of all science teachers and technicians. By encouraging every educator to develop their Professional Learning Journey, the ASE supports high-quality teaching and good outcomes for young people.

A teacher’s or technician’s journey can be formally recognised through the professional register as Chartered Science Teacher (CSciTeach) or Registered Science Technician (RSciTech). This recognition offers clear career progression, and enables educators to benchmark their skills and expertise.

The Professional Learning Journey empowers teachers and technicians to take responsibility for their own progression; however, the ASE is also working with senior leadership so that schools support staff in their journey and enable them to access suitable professional development.
