PTA Spaghetti Feed & BINGO Night Friday, October 9th 6-7:30 p.m.

From the Principal Dear Bayshore Families, Parent Conferences will be held the afternoon of Wednesday, October 21st and Thursday, October 22nd.

This year Bayshore Elementary will be joining many other ASD elementary schools in offering parents the opportunity to sign up electronically for conferences using the Conference Scheduling Application available on the ASD website.

Beginning on Wednesday, October 7th, you may log into and select the date/time that would work best with your family schedule. I would encourage families with more than one Bayshore child to schedule early to accommodate back-to-back conference times where available.

Access to the Conference Scheduling Application will be through a link on the Parents page of the district’s website. There will also be a link from the homepage: www.ASDk12.org/parents.

If you enter your email address when scheduling a conference, you will receive two automated emails. In both automated emails, you will be reminded of the time slot and day that you selected. The first email is sent as soon as you sign up. The second email reminder is sent two days before the actual conference.

Please email your child’s teacher if you need to change your scheduled conference. Editing conference dates/times is not available with the system.

I look forward to hearing your feedback on the Conference Scheduling Application process. Our goal is to continue to communicate with parents in the most effective and efficient manner possible and to conference with 100% of our Bayshore families this month.

the real illness which can make someone sick for up to 2 weeks and could have more severe consequences for some.

Other reasons you can still get sick after a flu vaccination are; by catching another virus that mimics the flu, being exposed to the flu before the body has time to build full immunity (about 2weeks) after the vaccination or getting ill from one of the many other flu viruses that are not part of the current vaccine. Each year the flu vaccine is reformulated to include the most probable and prevalent strains.

Hello Bayshore families, Influenza anyone? …No thanks!

Don’t let the influenza sneak up on you and your family this fall…

Besides practicing the basics of plenty of sleep, good nutrition, hydration, exercise and hand washing, choosing to get the flu vaccine is the next best defense to keep the flu away. Help keep your family and those around you protected.

Further reading is recommended and attached in the form of Vaccine Information Sheets (VIS) or for even more comprehensive information visit the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/consumer/ After reviewing the details, if you are still unsure about the risks and benefits or have further questions, I will be glad to answer questions and as always I recommend talking to your student’s health care provider if in doubt.

All students will have the opportunity to receive a free flu vaccination Friday, October 30th at Bayshore’s annual “Flu Clinic”. Student’s will only receive a vaccination if their parents have a complete and signed consent form returned to the office by October 29th

If you have not yet filled out a consent form and would like to take advantage of a free vaccination for your student(s) see links for current form and vaccine information, fill it out and return to the office no later than October 29th. You can reach me for questions by e-mail or phone as listed.

I mentioned in my last newsletter I would like your input on improving the “nursing program” here at Bayshore. I would greatly appreciate your feedback and ideas.

My student already had a seasonal flu vaccine this season and I filled out a consent form but I do not want him/her to receive the vaccine now. Just let me know ASAP and I will discard the consent and no vaccine will be given.

What is the difference between the Flu Mist and Inactivated Flu Injection?

The Flu Mist has live virus that has been altered so that it cannot actually cause the flu. The Inactivated Vaccine contains components from the killed flu virus strains that also spur the body’s immune response.

The Flu vaccine always makes my child sick when he/she has gotten it. Why does this happen and what is the benefit to still getting immunized if he/she is going to feel sick after?

The symptoms/side effects after vaccination sometimes mimic those of the illness. These symptoms are the result of the immune system building a fight against the outside invader. The symptoms typically are very mild and last a very short time (1-2 days) when compared to

Dear Bayshore Families, First quarter is almost coming to an end, already. Some social emotional learning, SEL, lessons I have been doing in classrooms this first quarter are as follows: (please keep in mind I am not in all classrooms.) Lessons are 30 minutes in length twice a month in most cases.

Kindergarten and first grades: Five ways to be a successful learner and the conflict resolution program Kelso’s Choices.

Second grade: Five ways to be a successful learner.

What a school counselor does (story) and review of Kelso involving role-playing choices to solve small problems.

Third grade: We started with a review of Kelso’s Choices followed by exploring “Bug Feelings,” identifying them.

The next step is to learn what we can with those feelings.

‘Readings’ from the Bayshore Library from Mrs. Sullivan

Book Care @ the Bayshore Library Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students have been working on book care. We have discussed and demonstrated how to carry their book and how to “turn and peek” (turning their pages by the corners).  2nd and 3rd grade students have been studying the Fiction and Non-Fiction Sections in our library. There are so many great books, and they are learning the best way to discover that “just right book”.

4th-6th grade students are reviewing how to navigate the ASD “Online Library Catalog” and the Bayshore Library.

The Book Fair is Coming to Bayshore!

OCTOBER 19TH – 22ND!!

September has been an exciting month for art. The sixth graders have been creating posters for the Lions Club Peace poster contest. This year the theme is “Sharing Peace” and so far the posters are looking terrific. The first place winner will receive $50 and the second place winner will get $25 from the Lions Club. The fourth and fifth grade classes have been working on art for the Municipal Light and Power company contest. The theme is Energy Conservation or Electrical Safety. The students have come up with some very interesting art to cover the themes. All students that enter will receive certificates and the 2016 calendar with student artwork displayed for each month of the calendar and the grand place winner will be on the cover. Each of the 13 winners will receive in addition to above, 2 day passes to the Anchorage museum and the grand prizewinner will receive an IPOD Shuffle.

The rest of the classes have been learning various styles of drawing along with the basics of color. They have also been learning about different styles of collage art. As creative as they have been so far, I am looking forward to seeing their work in October.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The end of the quarter is right around the corner and it has been a pleasure working with such a great group of students, parents, and staff at Bayshore.

We are currently finishing up our units on Safety/Personal Safety and then will be learning about our Body Systems.

Kindergarteners will be learning about their five senses. First graders are exploring the heart, lungs, and digestive system. Second graders are learning all about their brain and how it works. Third graders will “Look” at all their eyes continued

Healthy Futures

Classroom teachers have distributed the October Healthy Futures Log to their students. The activity logs for the October challenge are due back Friday, October 30, 2015 in order for students to receive the incentive reward. Additional logs will be available in a folder on the Healthy Futures Bulletin Board. Make sure to get out and play every day!

Gym Shorts

we will again transition into skills involving Football skills that involve open-field running, throwing/catching, and the Quarterback Option...a combination of Run/Pass skills.

"Steal the Bacon" is a favorite team game that incorporates all these skills. Primary grades will be practicing targeting skills using Bowling Pins, and either fleece balls or rolling balls. Again, thank you parents for providing well-fitting indoor shoes for PE. Students who wear gym shoes naturally perform better. As the snow begins to fly, help us keep our Gym floor dry, clean, and safe! 

Students have been learning to travel in different ways, with varying equipment. We are starting a volleyball unit with the students. Good hand-eye coordination with light volleyball trainers for the young students and passing and setting with older students. For the 5th and 6th grade students there will be an opportunity for an after school volleyball activity. I will have permission slips to pass out at the end of October. We will also get our heart rate up with some jumprope activities to start the second quarter. Please remind your children to have PE shoes that stay at school. Snow boots are not safe on gym floors and will not be allowed for PE time.  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Curriculum News Weeks 6-11: After our Soccer Skills Unit, we are transitioning into a Volleyball Unit. This unit will emphasize striking skills using our Forearms to elevate and pass the ball, Overhead Sets, and Overhand Direct Serves.

Students will progress from Individual skills, to Partner skills, and the Intermediate classes will culminate into Team skills of 3 v 3 games. These small-sided games encourages more 'touches' on the ball. Our Primary grades will implement the use of "feather-life" beach balls, and oversized Volleyball trainers for their Individual skill practice and Partner practice. After several weeks,

This quarter brings more new and exciting activities for 2nd through 6th graders.

On October 27th and October 28th, there will been auditions held for the ASD Honor Choir. This select choir is for 5th and 6th graders who have auditioned and have been chosen to be a member. I will be having preauditions for those students who are interested on Wednesday, October 14th from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., and also on Thursday, October 15th from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade Holiday Choir has been meeting every Tuesday after school from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. This year’s group is singing very well and I am excited for you to hear their upcoming performances in December. I will have permission slips in November for these concerts when I have all dates and times finalized. The evening concert will be at Bayshore on Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 in the gym.

Another special music activity that’s going great on Mondays and Wednesdays is the 4th Grade Recorder Group. This group is working hard to prepare for the “tour day” which is tentatively set to be on December 4th and the evening performance, which is scheduled for Thursday, December 10th. Permission slips will be coming home in November once I have all performance places and times finalized.

The Bayshore Handchime Group has been diligently working on two selections so far. They are also preparing for the “tour day” and the evening performance on December 10th. Once again, permission slips will be coming home in November once I have all performance places and times finalized.

Thank you for allowing your children to participate in these activities. I know they will grow musically and perhaps continue to enjoy music in some capacity when they leave Bayshore.

A special thank you to the 90 families who participated in our Fall Fundraiser! Due to your efforts we were able to make $9,037 for our school! Also thank you for the gracious Unfundraiser donations from those who were unable to participate.

We have our Family Spaghetti/ Bingo Night this Friday October 9, 6-7:30pm! This is a free family event. We are looking for volunteers to donate food, set up, serve, and clean up! Please go to our sign up genius link to volunteer. Our PTA Membership Drive and Un-fundraiser end October 9th as well. If you are wanting to join the PTA get those forms in! There will be extra forms at the event.

If your child’s class reaches 100% parent membership they will receive a pizza party. We will accept un-fundraiser donations the night of the event as well.
