41st Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society Demographics/Attendance The 41st Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society was held February 25-March 1, 2018 at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in San Diego, CA in conjunction with the 6th World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena. The meeting was attended by 528 participants. The meeting attendees represented universities, industrial partners, and government institutions from 21 countries. There were nearly equal numbers of participants from academia and industry, and government employees Chelsea Davis, Secretary comprised about 10% of the meeting at- (Purdue) tendees. A majority of those in attendance were from the United States (61.1%) while other large contingents hailed from Japan (8.0%), Germany (6.6%), France (6.4%), South Korea (4.5%), Canada (2.5%), the United Kingdom (2.3%), and Denmark (2.0%). Attendees also came from China, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, Taiwan, Belgium, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Australia, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa.
Secretary
Chelsea Davis, Purdue Chelsea Davis is an Assistant Professor in the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University working on novel interfacial mechanics measurement systems. Her experience in adhesion science and technology includes investigating surface instabilities for adhesion control and developing methods to visualize interfacial failure within composites and nanocomposites.
From the Treasurer The society’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2018. The February 2018 meeting in San Diego was a big event as we hosted the 6th World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena, (WCARP). The WCARP meetings occur every four years and rotate between Europe, Asia, and North America. The meeting was extended an extra day to allow for a full technical program. The meeting also included some extras including an expanded President’s reception Sunday evening and a banquet Tuesday Chuck Shuster, Treasurer evening. We anticipated these extra ex- (Franklin International) penses and budgeted accordingly. The quality of the technical program was validated by a record attendance at the meeting. The short course also had a record attendance. As a result the society managed to conclude our fiscal year with a small surplus. Given the current fiscal health of the society there are no plans to increase registration fees for the upcoming meeting and short course at the Sonesta Resort Hotel in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Next year’s meeting may not be a world congress, but it will still attract attendees and speakers from around the globe. Treasurer
Chuck Shuster, Franklin International Chuck has worked at Franklin International, Inc. in Columbus Ohio for just over 35 years. He has spent the last twenty-two years as a Senior Research Associate in Franklin’s Core Technology Laboratory. In this position he works on strategic development projects for the various business units within Franklin. Franklin has a variety of adhesive platforms including water based vinyl and vinyl acrylic adhesives for Industrial assembly applications, water and solvent based acrylics and vinyl acrylics for construction adhesives and mastics, and water based acrylic PSA’S. Chuck’s introduction to polymers was in the Polymer Science Department of the University of Akron where he first encountered Dr. Allen Gent, one of the Society’s founders
