President

Dear Fellow Adhesion Society Members, I am honored to serve as President of the Adhesion Society, and I remain committed to catalyzing the advancement of the fundamental science and engineering of adhesion while ensuring strong partnerships with our adhesive and sealant industry for broader impact. The Adhesion Society has provided me a valuable approach to discovery over the past two decades, and in the words of Professor Thomas Ward from Virginia Tech, “think adhesion at the molecular level.” This use-inspired perspective catalyzes many new directions in our field, ranging from reversible adhesion and bio-inspired adhesion to responsive surface chemistry and tunable interfaces in additive manufacturing. I would like to thank Timothy Long, President (Virginia Tech) our former President, Dr. Greg Schueneman from the US Forest Service, for his leadership, vision, and tireless approach to advancing the infrastructure, functionality, and membership focus during his tenure. Greg served as a real inspiration to me during my transition, and he also provided keen oversight to the workings of the Society, which has enabled me to inherit a finely tuned organization and an engaged executive committee. I also want to thank Malinda Armstrong for her attention to detail, from the selection of the conference venue to the printing of presentation abstracts, which collectively ensures success at the national meetings.

It was our privilege to host the sixth World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena (WCARP) this past February in concert with our 2018 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. The venue and weather were a nice break from the winter months, despite the less than favorable weather conditions for the 5k fun run/walk! This global adhesion conference rotates between continents every four years.

Please join me in congratulating Prof. Joelle Frechette of John Hopkins University as the meeting program chair together with organization from an International Organizing Committee (IOC). This was an amazing feat with contributions from nine adhesion focused Societies in South America, Asia, and Europe. We welcomed 528 attendees from across the globe, the largest conference ever for the Adhesion Society! The adhesion science short course, which occurs immediately prior to the technical conference also attracted nearly 70 participants, again the largest participation in the history of the Society. Thanks to Prof. Dave Dillard from Virginia Tech and his fellow instructors for delivering an engaging and interdisciplinary course. We also had the opportunity to recognize one of our scientific leaders, Prof. Ray Pearson from Lehigh University, as the recipient of the 2018 Award for Excellence in Adhesion, sponsored by the 3M Company. The award session on Sunday afternoon captivated the audience with the nanoscience of adhesion and concluded with Prof. Pearson’s lecture dealing with nanoparticle toughened epoxies. Henkel Corporation continues to support the Peebles Award Symposium, where our future leaders in adhesion science presented their latest findings; it is always challenging to select the top student presentations. We were also pleased to welcome Dr. Robert Allen from IBM Almaden as our banquet speaker, and he spoke to the need to continue a strong partnership among universities and industries. It is this entanglement of faculty, students, and industrial researchers that defines the Society and ensures an intertwined professional network for years to come.

in a warm and beautiful location during the colder month of the year, representing an opportunity to escape colder temperatures and discuss the latest findings in our field. I know that the success of WCARP will bring a new cadre of researchers to the annual meeting, and parallel technical sessions and posters combined with opportunities for professional networking will be an excellent opportunity for all. I want to thank Dr. Nick Shephard from Dow Corning Corporation and Dr. Chris Wohl from NASA Langley, who accepted the challenge to serve together as the program co-chairs for the conference. Nick and Chris bring a broad perspective on adhesion science, and this is the first time we have welcomed co-chairs, ensuring a diverse technical program. We are also pleased to announce the selection of Prof.

Al Crosby of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst as the recipient of the 3M-sponsored 2019 Award for Excellence in Adhesion! We look forward to an exciting session on Sunday at the conference in honor of Prof. Crosby and his students. Adhesion Science & Technology Exhibition

The Bioadhesion Division had a very successful year in 2018. We had the opportunity to connect with researchers worldwide as this year’s meeting featured WCARP 6th World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena in conjunction with 41st Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society. The Bioadhesion Division solicited and organized a total of 32 talks as a part of four distinct technical sessions including: Bioadhesive Chemistry, Organismal Adhesion, Physical Properties and Design of Bioadhesives, and Biomedical Adhesive and Clinical Applications. Keynote speakers included Jinsoo Ahn (Seoul National University, South Korea), Yu Tian (Tsinghua University, China), Pascal Damman (University of Mons, Belgium), and Herbert Waite (UC Santa Barbara). The Division was very excited to host Eduard Arzt of Leibniz Institute for New Materials, a pioneer in bio-inspired adhesive design, as one of the Plenary Speakers.

At the Division meeting, we voted on our next Division officers. We welcome Bruce Lee (Michigan Technological University) as Division Niels Holten-Andersen, Vice-Chair (Massachusetts Chair, Niels Holten-Andersen (Massachusetts InInstitute of Technology stitute of Technology) as Division Vice-chair, and Dan Sameoto (University of Alberta, Canada) as Program Chair. Our goals for the 2019 meeting include maintaining the existing technical themes and organizing sessions in emerging areas related to adhesion science such as soft robotics and antifouling. We aim to continually grow the diversity of topics and researchers in bioadhesion to encourage exchange of ideas in a larger scope.

Soft Adhesives Division

I have always enjoyed the Adhesion Society/WCARP pairings and 2018 was no different.

The extended program is a great opportunity for the division to explore new topics for structural adhesives and catch up with colleagues we see infrequently. The Structural Adhesives Division showcased another outstanding program. I want to thank all the session organizers and session chairs. It truly wouldn’t be possible without your help. The partnership with Soft Adhesives in the areas of Additive Manufacturing and Novel Tools Aaron Forster, Chair (NIST) & Methods for Characterization were highly successful. I find attending a session that is not directly related to my current research is a great way seed new ideas or ways to approach problems. I hope that these joint sessions are as helpful for you too.

The Soft Adhesive Division had a great 2018. The 41st annual meeting/WCARP had researches from around the world come together to present their work on soft adhesives and materials. We had a number of exciting sessions from Novel Chemistry, Rheology and Adhesion, and Gel Adhesion and Mechanics to new sessions on Material and Interfaces for Soft Robotics and Electronics and Elasticity and Capillarity in Adhesion. These were strongly supported by great keynote sessions from: Michael Dickey Dale Haner, Past Chair (North Carolina State University), Arnaud (DHM Adhesives) Antkowiak (Université Pierre et Marie Curie), Jia Cho Ho (Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)), Anke Lindner (ESPCI), and Alfred Crosby (University of Massachusetts).

We would like to thank all of our session chairs and moderators for putting together this fantastic program. Their hard work and careful planning made for a memorial and informative technical program.

Erich Bain (U.S. Army Research Laboratory) was elected Vice-Chair in 2018. Dr. Bain was a huge help last year as the Symposium Chair and I look forward to his leadership next year. Let’s welcome Erich and support him in his new role!

With that in mind, there is no better time to re- Erich Bain, Vice Chair mind members of the Structural Adhesives Divi- (US Army Research Laboratory) sion meeting. The location and time will be listed in the program and I encourage you to attend. This is a time for you to play an active role in the planning for the next year’s session topics. We also elect the Vice-Chair for 2020.

Work is already underway preparing for the 2019 Annual Meeting in Hilton Head, South Carolina. We have a great group of session organizers to guide us through the field of structural adhesives. Traditional topics such as Fracture Mechanics, Surface Preparation, and Novel Chemistry remain a strong foundation. Advanced manufacturing techniques for Structural Adhesives and Composites are important, but controlling defects and understanding processing effects remains a challenge. We want to hear how you are rising to that meet the challenge. Transportation is back! We want to hear your success stories in bonding dissimilar materials, optimizing damping of noise or vibration, and lowering cycle times. Additive Manufacturing and Novel Tools & Methods for Characterization will be joint symposia with the Soft Adhesives Division that return this year. Everyone loves Additive Manufacturing. In-situ techniques such as digital image correlation, thermal or electrical conductivity, and fluorescence imaging enrich our understanding of elasticity, plasticity, and fracture. We want to hear about your innovative techniques. A new joint symposium with the Soft Adhesives Division is Dynamic Response and Fracture of Materials. Adhesives don’t always fail at 10 mm/min and we want to know how you think about fracture at m/min and beyond. I look forward to seeing everyone in Hilton Head!

Chair – Structural Adhesives Division

At our division meeting we selected our next division officers. We are happy Michael Bartlett, Chair to welcome Michael Bartlett (Iowa State (Iowa State University) University) as Division Chair and Jonathan Pham (University of Kentucky) as Division Vice-chair. We also starting planning sessions for our upcoming annual meeting.

We are going to build on the success of our new sessions in soft technology and elastocapillarity, strengthen our core in PSAs, gels, and viscoelasticity, and introduce new directions in skin adhesion and drug formulations. We will also be organizing joint symposia with the Structural Division on Additive Manufacturing and Dynamic ReJonathan Pham, Vice-Chair sponse and Fracture of Materials. We hope (University of Kentucky) this will encourage our base and expand our division into many of the exciting new areas in soft materials and adhesives. We look forward to seeing you all in 2019 at Hilton Head.

Michael Bartlett is an Assistant Professor in Materials Science & Engineering at Iowa State University, specializing in soft functional materials and interfaces

Aaron has been working at NIST for 14 years. He started his career at NIST developing combinatorial methods for adhesion measurements. The majority of his research is in the area of environmental degradation and scratch resistance for automotive and architectural coatings. Recently, he moved to the Material Measurement Laboratory at NIST to focus on dynamic and impact behavior of soft materials and fiber reinforced composites.

He was part of the NIST team that participated in the Head Health Challenge III contest.

Jonathan Pham is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at University of Kentucky, specializing in soft materials and interfaces.

Division Updates

41st Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society Demographics/Attendance

The 41st Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society was held February 25-March 1, 2018 at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in San Diego, CA in conjunction with the 6th World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena. The meeting was attended by 528 participants. The meeting attendees represented universities, industrial partners, and government institutions from 21 countries. There were nearly equal numbers of participants from academia and industry, and government employees Chelsea Davis, Secretary comprised about 10% of the meeting at- (Purdue) tendees. A majority of those in attendance were from the United States (61.1%) while other large contingents hailed from Japan (8.0%), Germany (6.6%), France (6.4%), South Korea (4.5%), Canada (2.5%), the United Kingdom (2.3%), and Denmark (2.0%). Attendees also came from China, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, Taiwan, Belgium, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Australia, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa.

Chelsea Davis, Purdue Chelsea Davis is an Assistant Professor in the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University working on novel interfacial mechanics measurement systems. Her experience in adhesion science and technology includes investigating surface instabilities for adhesion control and developing methods to visualize interfacial failure within composites and nanocomposites.

From the Treasurer

The society’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2018. The February 2018 meeting in San Diego was a big event as we hosted the 6th World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena, (WCARP). The WCARP meetings occur every four years and rotate between Europe, Asia, and North America.

The meeting was extended an extra day to allow for a full technical program. The meeting also included some extras including an expanded President’s reception Sunday evening and a banquet Tuesday Chuck Shuster, Treasurer evening. We anticipated these extra ex- (Franklin International) penses and budgeted accordingly. The quality of the technical program was validated by a record attendance at the meeting. The short course also had a record attendance. As a result the society managed to conclude our fiscal year with a small surplus.

Given the current fiscal health of the society there are no plans to increase registration fees for the upcoming meeting and short course at the Sonesta Resort Hotel in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Next year’s meeting may not be a world congress, but it will still attract attendees and speakers from around the globe.

Treasurer

Chuck Shuster, Franklin International Chuck has worked at Franklin International, Inc. in Columbus Ohio for just over 35 years. He has spent the last twenty-two years as a Senior Research Associate in Franklin’s Core Technology Laboratory. In this position he works on strategic development projects for the various business units within Franklin.

Franklin has a variety of adhesive platforms including water based vinyl and vinyl acrylic adhesives for Industrial assembly applications, water and solvent based acrylics and vinyl acrylics for construction adhesives and mastics, and water based acrylic PSA’S. Chuck’s introduction to polymers was in the Polymer Science Department of the University of Akron where he first encountered Dr. Allen Gent, one of the Society’s founders

Award for Excellence and Networking

2019 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science Sponsored by 3M Company We are pleased to announce 2019 Adhesion Society Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science sponsored by 3M to Professor Alfred J. Crosby from University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass).

Alfred J. Crosby is a Professor in the Polymer Science & Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Professor Crosby received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Virginia in 1996 and his Alfred J. Crosby, University of Ph.D. in Materials Science and EngiMassachusetts Amherst neering at Northwestern University in 2000. He began his career at UMass in 2002 as assistant professor and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, several book

chapters, and 15 patents or patent applications. His work has been cited more than 3000 times in the literature.

Recipient of Adhesion Society’s outstanding Young Scientist Award he has contributed significantly to the science and technology of soft materials, especially in the context of adhesion and bio-inspired materials. He combines a drive for fundamental discovery with an instinct for timely introduction of practical (scalable) concepts, resulting in very broad appeal that spans academics and industry.

The Adhesion Society’s Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science, sponsored by 3M, is the Society’s premier award for outstanding achievements in scientific research relating to adhesion. The criteria for winning this award include a scientific contribution that has significantly improved our understanding of the phenomenon of adhesion, or a contribution to the technology of adhesion or adhesives that has had significant impact on the adhesion/adhesives industry, and a world-wide recognition of that achievement. The award has been given annually since 1987.

Women’s Networking Event

The Women’s Networking Reception at the Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society and World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomenon was a great success. About forty women enjoyed dinner, drinks and lively conversation. It provided the women in attendance a causal opportunity to meet and network across academia and industry. We had the opportunity to hear a bit about the structure of the society in the hopes of encouraging more participation from women in the future. Everyone is looking forward to the gathering at the next meeting!

2018 Patrick Fellow

2018 Early Career Award and Call for Nominations Sponsored by ASC

Mark Strobel (3M Company) and Greg Schueneman (Forrest Products laboratory) congratulate Dr. David Yarusso for being elevated to Robert L. Patrick Fellow of the Adhesion Society.

It is our pleasure to announce elevation of Dr. David Yarusso as a Robert L. Patrick Fellow of the Adhesion Society. Appointment to Fellow of the Society is a formal recognition of outstanding members and their achievements in the field of adhesion science. The award also commemorates the lifelong contributions made to the adhesion community by the late Robert L. Patrick.

Dave is widely known to the adhesion community for his world-class expertise in the field of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). He is regarded as a distinguished expert in the mechanical and physical properties of PSAs with special emphasis on the time dependent behavior of PSAs. His reach is global and includes industry, academia and external organizations. He has taught numerous courses on PSA technology, adhesion science, polymer rheology, polymer characterization, and polymer physical properties.

The Adhesion Society’s Early Career Award recognizes a scientist who has contributed in an outstanding and innovative way to the progress of the field of adhesion science research and/or technology with a significant interdisciplinary aspect. The nominee shall not have exceeded a maximum number of five years in their “permanent” professional position in the year in which the award is presented.

A nominee need not be a member of the Adhesion Society, and nominees of any nationality are eligible. Current members of the Adhesion Society’s Executive Committee, are ineligible for consideration. A nominee may work in either the private or public sector (e.g. industry, academia, government, non-governmental organization). Selection of the awardee will be made and approved by the Adhesion Society Executive Committee. The award will not be made in absentia except under extenuating circumstances. 2018 Peebles Awards and the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award Sponsored by Henkel

This year we had seven recipients of the Peebles Award for Graduate Student Research in Adhesion Science, sponsored by Henkel. The selection of awardees was based on abstracts submitted as contributions to the Annual Meeting. These awardees received partial support to attend the meeting and present their papers at an oral symposium. These presentations formed the basis for choosing the winner of the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award sponsored by Henkel. In addition to this support, registration fees for the short course and the meeting were waived. Tim Long (Virginia Tech), Eric Silverberg (Henkel), and Anand Jagota (Lehigh University) presented Shruti Rattan (University of Massachusetts) with the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award for her paper on “Puncture Mechanics of Soft Gels at Small Length Scales”. Marceau Henot (CNRS) was the runner-up for his paper “A Proof of the Navier Interfacial Equation Through Quantitative Comparison Between Solid-polymer Melt and Solidelastomer Friction”. Both were awarded a cash prize each in addition to the remuneration associated with being a Peebles Award winner. The winner’s prize included a $1,000 cash prize and a plaque, recognizing the winner. The runner up received a $500 cash prize and a plaque.

Second Annual 5K – WCARP/AS

The 41st Meeting of the Adhesion Society witnessed the Second Annual 5k Run/Walk. It was held in the morning of Tuesday, Feb 27.

Fifty-three people participated with awards offered to fastest runner to Frank Palmieri, first quartile of distribution to Anke Lindner, median of distribution to Kevin Turner, third quartile of distribution to Chris White, and fastest hiker to Elaine Yorkgistis. Congratulations to all who participated and special thanks to our generous sponsors: 3M, BTG Labs, Lawter™, L&L Products, and DHM Adhesives Inc. All participants received a commemorative t-shirt of the event.

The 2018 Distinguished Paper Award

Ali Dhinojwala (University of Akron) and Anand Jagota (Leigh University) presented the Best Poster Award, sponsored by Avery Denison, to Ping Rao (Hokkaido University), Maren Weidner (Saarland University), Cole Sorensen (Virgnia Tech).

Walter Federle (University of Cambridge) and Jonathan Seppala (National Institute of Standards & Technology) received the 2017 distinguished paper award presented at the Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society.

Since 1977, The Adhesion Society has provided a forum to bring together in a single group all of the disciplines which relate to the science of adhesion. The Society fosters communication between researchers in mechanics, synthetic chemistry, surface science, polymer physics, materials science, and biology. With members drawn from industry and academia, it also encourages the exchange of problems and solutions between those who share common scientific interests. The poster session is an integral part of the Society’s annual meeting. The 2016 Distinguished Paper Award was established in 1999 and was supported until 2005 by the H. B. Fuller Company as a tribute to Rolf Schubert, former Vice-President of Research and Development and Chief Technology Officer for the H.B. Fuller Company. In 2006, National Starch and Chemical Company began the support of this award. It is now sponsored by Henkel.

One paper presented at the annual meeting of the Adhesion Society is selected each year to receive this award. The selection process is coordinated by the Vice President of the Adhesion Society. The selected paper has distinguished itself within this process as being outstanding in the categories of quality of research, impact on field, novelty and effectiveness of presentation.

The 42nd Annual Meeting is a four day event featuring a strong technical program of education sessions PLUS a two-day short course, poster session, exhibition, student award symposium and concurrent technical sessions. Our goal is to welcome 200 global adhesion professionals.

2019 Program Chairs

Nick Shephard Nick Shephard began working at Dow Corning Corp developing silicone sealants in 1985. In 1995 he received his PhD from Virginia Tech in Materials Engineering Science studying measurement methods for predicting sealant durability. After a brief post doc at Virginia Tech, he returned to Dow Corning to pursue adhesion related research on silicone materials spanning applications in building construction, medical adhesives, photovoltaics, computers and transportation. Currently he is a Research Fellow at Dow Performance Silicones.

Chris Wohl Christopher J. Wohl, is a research materials/surface engineer in the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. His background is in interfacial and adhesion science, polymer and small molecule synthesis, spectroscopy, and kinetics. His current work is focused on generation and characterization of materials and surfaces for minimizing adhesion of dust particles and insect residues on aerospace structures.
