2018 ASC Convention Prelim Program

The Annual Spring Convention – a must attend event for the industry! Dear Industry Professionals, I am pleased to invite you to the ASC Annual Spring Convention and EXPO April 23-25 at the Hyatt Regency Miami. As you know, this annual event is the largest U.S. gathering of adhesive and sealant professionals like you. This year’s convention is shaping up to be another spectacular, must-attend event. We continually add new features to improve your overall experience, and 2018 is no exception. We begin the week by hosting our annual “ASC Gives Back” community service project. Miami’s shoreline was devastated by Hurricane Irma last fall. Join me and your industry peers as we work together on beach restoration over an afternoon of networking and stewardship. Our opening keynote is Jim Larranaga, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Miami, currently one of the top NCAA men’s basketball teams in the nation. Coach Larranaga will discuss “The Art of Retaining, Developing, and Recruiting Talent.” Day One features numerous hot topics such key feedstocks, advanced technology, market data and disruptive technologies, regulatory developments, hygiene value chain, and migration in food packaging. During lunch, recipients of ASC’s new Scholarship Program will be announced and recent graduates of ASC’s Training Academy Certificate Program will be recognized—both new to the convention program. Day Two’s keynote is Dr. Michael Okoroafor, Vice President of Global Sustainability and Packaging Innovation, at McCormick and Company, a respected global leader in flavor. He will present an industry outlook on “Key Insights Driving the Future of Food Packaging.” Session highlights for Day Two include sessions on new product introductions, operations and process safety, formulating with additives, business and technology in the digital world, product innovations by finalists of ASC’s Innovations Award, and polyurethanes. Recipients of this year’s ASC Innovation Awards will be announced on Day Two, which will also feature an “ASC Members-Only” networking lunch. Additionally, two co-located short courses are scheduled over two days focusing on Hot Melt—which will include formulation strategies based on application and performance requirements for hot melt adhesive technologies and markets—and Polyurethane, which will cover markets, chemistry, technology behind one- and two-part polyurethane adhesives and sealants including raw materials, reactions, formulating, manufacturing and commercial scale up. Also, our Opening and Closing Receptions provide excellent opportunities for you to network with fellow industry professionals. Lastly, we will once again feature more than 100 exhibitors in the ASC EXPO, where the leading suppliers in the adhesive and sealant market will be on hand to meet with you. As you can see, there is a lot of value built into two days at ASC’s Annual Spring Convention. Now that it is once per year, you cannot afford to miss it. I look forward to seeing you in Miami.

Keynotes & Innovation aw TUESDAY OPENING GENERAL SESSION BREAKFAST & KEYNOTE The Art of Retaining, Developing and Recruiting Talent Jim Larranaga, Head Men’s Basketball Coach, University of Miami Finding talented, hardworking employees who will uphold the standards of your company is difficult. Coach Larranaga shares his tried-andtrue methods for recruiting players and assistant coaches and for creating an environment that Sponsored by: keeps them on the job. Larranaga tells audiences about his 8 C’s—character, competitiveness, competence, consistency, cohesiveness, Learn more at www.eastman.com commitment, communication and confidence— which are the foundation for selecting a winning staff and team and developing a championship-caliber program. Audiences will learn: how to develop a program that will elevate their organization’s performance to the highest level; where to find talented employees; and how to build a winning, dedicated staff. Jim Larranaga, who has led two underperforming basketball programs from irrelevance to being true champions that captured the attention and imagination of fans everywhere, shares his leadership and teamwork strategies that apply on and off the court. In 2013 during his second year as Head Coach at The University of Miami, Jim Larranaga took his team being an afterthought to being ACC Champions and ranked number two in the country. This is not his first time turning the fortunes around for a fledgling program into being a national powerhouse as Larranaga improbably led an undersized and underestimated George Mason University team to the Final Four in 2006. Larranaga—who was awarded both the AP Coach of the Year and the Naismith Coach of the Year after the 2013 season—captures the attention of audiences, sharing his strategies for achievement and emphasizing organizational teamwork, attitude and commitment—not just individual talent—as essential ingredients for success on and off the court. Larranaga has proven he is a master at mentoring, locating and recruiting players and staff who will remain loyal to the team. He shows you the strategies for surrounding yourself with the best people and nurturing them until your entire team or organization achieves success. He stresses the value of hard work balanced with determination, leadership and class, describing his own formula for winning despite the odds and enjoying the journey along the way.

ards WEDNESDAY CLOSING PRESENTATION & RECEPTION Henkel Ventures – Our New Path to Business Growth Chuck Paul, NSC Fellow, Henkel Corporation Global adhesive companies have traditionally grown both organically and by M&A. Corporate venture investments are a complementary approach which can support traditional organic growth via new technologies. However, venturing is especially effective as a means to engage in new markets in a timely manner. The areas of technology and market focus for Henkel will be described, as will our approach to finding suitable investments. The driving forces for expanding external innovation and the means to best leverage these innovations will be discussed. Dr. Charles W. Paul, Vice President – Technology, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, is responsible for technology assessments for M&A and Venturing, and supports Open Innovation within North America for the R&D teams. Since joining Henkel in 1988 he has held a number of positions within R&D. His experience covers almost all categories of adhesive and wideranging applications: from jet engines to hair spray, polyimides to starch. Chuck holds over 50 US patents and coauthored numerous publications including five book chapters on adhesives. Chuck has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University and a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, College of Chemistry.

Science that sticks

Better adhesion is closer than you think. Resins & Resin Dispersions for Adhesives: PINEREZ™ and SNOWTACK™. Snowtack dispersions utilize the ROBUST™ manufacturing process technology, which produces tackifier dispersions with finer particle size and virtually zero grit. Adhesive manufacturers can produce high-quality adhesives by incorporating these SNOWTACK™ tackifier dispersions in their formulations. With better science, manufacturers limit defects, improve coating characteristics and enhance line performance on high-speed coaters.

Short Course Program Description Polyurethanes are one of the most versatile chemistries used in many adhesive applications due to their outstanding ability to bond a variety of substrates in both rigid and flexible applications. With versatility, however, comes complexity. Optimization of urethane technology is enhanced by a thorough understanding of the reactions between isocyanates, diols, chain extenders and the resulting morphology. This intensive two-day short course is designed to provide technical professionals a better understanding of the chemistry, technology and fundamentals of polyurethane adhesive and sealants. A knowledge of chemistry is required for full appreciation of course content. Technically oriented business professionals will broaden their knowledge, expand their network and meet the next movers and shakers in the supplier, formulating and end user community.
