This presentation will give an update on global commercialization and development of several bio-based chemical building blocks and monomers that can be used in adhesives and sealants applications. The presentation will also cover the use of next generation feedstock such as biomass, greenhouse gas, and other waste-based materials that are being developed for these bio-based monomers. New TSCA: Status Report and Survival Guide Jamie Conrad, Owner, Conrad Law & Policy Council Last summer, Congress passed a sweeping overhaul of the Toxic Substances Control Act — the first amendments to the statute since it was passed in 1976. EPA is now deep into implementing the new amendments, with proposed rules on resetting the inventory, prioritizing and evaluating the risks of chemicals, and expanded fees. EPA has also launched the first ten risk evaluations. Many of these actions have triggered serious concerns. Meanwhile, the new chemicals program has become backlogged and more aggressive. Can the new program be salvaged? How can chemical manufacturers and processors survive it — or even benefit?

by California’s Green Chemistry Initiative and Other Regulations Focusing on Environmental Exposure to Toxins Bill Hubbard, Partner, Thompson Hine There are a multitude of regulations, programs, and initiatives that require the removal, limitation, or disclosure of chemicals in building and specialty products, including California’s Safer Consumer Products regulations, U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification program, retailers’ disclosure requirements, labelling and transparency programs, and consumer class actions. Focused on human and environmental exposure to toxins, these initiatives can shift markets drastically. This session will review these recent trends and evaluate how they shape the market.

Opportunities for Composites and Adhesives in the Automotive Market Sanjay Mazumdar, CEO, Lucintel Lightweight materials are gaining significant importance in the automotive industry to drive fuel efficiency and to minimize carbon footprint. The government regulations across various regions represent a significant opportunity for lightweight materials in the automotive industry. As automakers increase the use of lightweight materials such as AHSS, aluminum, and composites, the demand for structural adhesives per car will grow as these dissimilar materials cannot be welded. Multimaterial Joining Project Opportunities for ASC Members Funded Through IACMI Larry Drzal, Director, IACMI Vehicle Technology Area, Michigan State University Multimaterial Joining is a critical enabling technology for achieving vehicle lightweighting and has been given high priority in the IACMI Roadmap. This presentation will identify some of the critical issues that need to be addressed for multimaterial joining technology to advance as a structural technology and to explain the opportunities for the ASC members to participate in pre-competitive multimaterial joining projects.

Laser Interference-Based Surface Treatments of Carbon Fiber Polymer Composites and Aluminum for Enhanced Bonding Adrian Sabau, Senior Research Staff Member, Oak Ridge National Labs Surfaces of both composite and aluminum were prepared for adhesive joining using a new laser based technique. The laserinterference power profile used to structure the composite and Al surfaces was created by splitting the beam and guiding those beams to the sample surfaces. The results for the single-lap shear tests indicate an increased joint performance over baseline joints. Adhesive joints made with laser-structured surfaces were found to absorb approximately 150% more energy than the baseline joints.

New Opportunities and Challenges for Pressure Sensitive Adhesive in the Building Products Market Werner Hoermann, Technology Manager, Custom Adhesive Technology The presentation will show examples where added properties in adhesives, and pressure sensitive adhesives specifically, can bring more functionality to their role in the building envelope and points out opportunities in adjacent fields like infrastructure applications. The traditional functions of the building envelope, structural, aesthetic, waterproofing, as well as noise and thermal insulation have heretofore been layered individually by different trades and product suppliers. The future points to a merging of these functionalities into single applications, which will shorten construction times, lower cost, and improve quality. Adhesives, generally an afterthought in industrial applications, can aid in this development, but will require a more holistic view of their composition, manufacturing, and marketing.

Thermally Conductive Silicone Adhesive with High Position Tack Zheng Lu, Director, Global Product Development, Henkel Corporation Silicone adhesives were developed with 2-3 w/mK thermal conductivity using various types of thermal conductive particles.

The adhesives show interesting adhesion features to the substrate and viscosity trend. The adhesives modified with a low-level modifier are able to fix the substrates vertically for more than 30 minutes before fully curing.

Use of Renewable Materials in Anaerobic AdhesivesSustainability & Performance Crystal Straughter, Manager, Product Development, Henkel Corporation This presentation illustrates the use of renewable materials that improve sustainability and reduce CO2 footprint without compromising adhesive performance. The study results show performance comparison of products made with the bio-based monomer versus commonly used oil based monomer.

-Farnesene-Based Tackifiers Keith Nelson, Principal Scientist, Total Cray Valley This presentation describes tackifying resins in which piperylene has been replaced, in full or in part, by -farnesene. Included are proposed polymerization mechanisms and molecular structures along with adhesive and rheological evaluation versus commercial resins.

Additional Functionality of Mineral Oil in Hot Melt Formulations Peter Kaali, Technical Advisor, Nynas AB The presentation will discuss the functionality of mineral oil as compatibilizer in hot melt formulations. The aim is to formulate with resins and polymers that are incompatible and investigate how mineral oil could compatibilize such materials and improve the performance of such formulations.

Development and Applications of Innovative Hybrid Adhesives Jianping Liu, Technical Manager, Henkel Corporation Innovative hybrid adhesives incorporating the best performance characteristics of both cyanoacrylate and epoxy adhesives have been developed. The new hybrid adhesive provides fast fixture time at room temperature, impact resistance, high temperature resistance, and high strength bonding on a variety of substrates including metals, rubbers, woods, and most plastics. They also provide gap filling ability up to 5 mm. The cyanoacrylate and epoxy hybrid adhesive is the first instant adhesive suitable for structural applications and is one of the first of its kind offering solutions for many industrial applications.

Water-borne Adhesives for Bonding Polyolefins with Fabrics Grace Wan, Technical Leader, Adhesive Technology in FS, Dow Chemical Company In this talk, the development of an aqueous adhesive system that can bond PET and PA fabrics to a polyolefin will be discussed.

The proposed adhesive system can be used without pretreatment of the surface and include components that have affinity to both the PET/PA and polyolefin substrates to result in cohesive failure of the adhesive. Detailed surface measurements and failure analysis were used to establish the structure-property relationships between the polymers and the adhesive; significant factors include the polymer composition, polar functionality of the polymer, and substrate chemistry.

Improving the Adhesion of UV Curable Coatings to Plastic and Metal Substrates Andy Stecher, President/CEO, PlasmaTreat Parts producers are increasingly interested in UV curable materials for their performance and processing benefits.

For example UV curable adhesives are increasingly used in automotive, transportation, aerospace, medical and electronics applications. However, compared with conventional formulations, the highly crosslinked nature of UV composition present challenges for obtaining adequate adhesion. This paper examines the use of atmospheric plasma surface treatment to mitigate adhesion problems with applying UV materials to a range of popular plastic, composite and metal substrates.

The findings will be useful to formulators who are developing materials and processes, and for end users facing cost, quality and reliability issues in manufacturing.

Activated and Enhanced Silanes for Improved Cure Kinetics and Adhesion Promotion Annalese Maddox, Technical Service Specialist, Gelest Inc. Activated silanes are blends of cyclic azasilanes with conventional silanes that provide high-speed reactivity induced by surfaces, unlike conventional silanes that require moisture for initiation.

Cyclic azasilanes do not require water for activation and react over 100 times faster with hydroxyl species than conventional silanes. Once the cyclic azasilane ring is opened, the basic secondary amine catalyzes the condensation of silanols formed from the conventional silane with the substrate. In moisture-cure epoxy systems, activated silanes with amine functionality give the benefits of moisture-free deposition, high speed reactivity, adhesion promotion, and high bond strengths between substrates. Using a Data Driven Approach to Improving Process Safety in a Specialty Chemicals Plant Eric Walmet, Charleston Plant Manager, Ingevity Most chemical plants investigate incidents thoroughly, but often these investigations fail to address larger, systemic issues that contribute to process safety incidents. At Ingevity’s Charleston Specialty Chemicals plant, a data driven Operations Excellence (OpEx) process was used to examine several years’ worth of incidents. The data from this diagnostic study drove several long term initiatives which helped support sustainable reductions in the number and severity of process safety incidents.

Hydrophilization of Fluoropolymers and Silicones Wei Chen, Professor of Chemistry, Mount Holyoke College In this presentation, adsorption of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH), a water-soluble, atactic yet semicrystalline polymer, to fluoropolymers and silicones from aqueous solution will be discussed. PVOH adsorption is unique because of the additional polymer crystallization, resulting in a ~3 nm thick adsorbed layer. Surface chemistry and energetics of the PVOH-adsorbed materials can be further manipulated by taking advantage of the rich reactivity of the alcohol functionality. The various PVOH thin film morphologies on silicones as the result of dewetting and how durable hydrophilization of silicones can be accomplished will also be discussed.

We also use a small-angle peel test to characterize how the initial features of crack formation and propagation are altered in aqueous environments. Bulk Dissipation & Interfacial Failure of Acrylic EmulsionBased Pressure Sensitive Adhesives Qifeng Wang, Postdoctoral Researcher, Northwestern University The performance of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) depends strongly on the viscoelastic properties of the adhesive material itself and the surface that it is placed into contact with. In this work we use a multiple-oscillatory test that is able to quantify the mechanical response of adhesive materials in the linear regime, and also in the highly strained regime where the adhesive layer has cavitated to form mechanically isolated brils. The experiments involved the use of hemispherical indenters made of glass or polyethylene, brought into contact with a thin adhesive layer and then retracted with different form of oscillatory waves. A set of model acrylic emulsion-based PSAs were used in the experiments. The adhesives have a surprising degree of elastic character at high strains, with subsequent loading/unloading cycles giving an adhesive failure criterion based on the stored elastic energy. The failure criterion is determined both by the non-linear rheological property of the adhesive and interaction between the adhesive and contacted materials.

Adhesive Bonding Using Reversibly-Photocurable Materials Haruhisa Akiyama, Senior Researcher, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Reversible adhesive bonding of glass substrates is demonstrated using photocrosslinkable hexa-functional compounds.

The thermal cleavage of the crosslinking on heating above 160 ° C induced liquefaction of the materials. The photocuring and thermal-liquefaction were repeatable. Thus the materials are applicable to detachable and reworkable adhesives. The tensile shear adhesion strength of the adhesive bonded glass plates with the photocured materials was >3.0 MPa, whereas the adhesion strength was undetectable after heating of the samples.

Latest Developments in GPC Analysis of Adhesive and Sealant Polymers Mark Pothecary, Americas Product Manager, Malvern Instruments Molecular properties such as molecular weight and structure strongly impact the functional performance of polymer-based materials. Gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) is the most widely used tool for the measurement of polymer molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Advanced detectors such as light scattering is increasingly used to overcome the limitations of conventional GPC measurements and offer absolute molecular weight. In this paper, we will briefly discuss the principles and benefits of multi-detector GPC measurements. Using examples of epoxies, polyols, and siloxanes, we will show how recent developments have opened these applications, enabling greater control of their molecular properties, which in turn, will feed in their bulk performance.

Developments in Impeller Technology for Mixing Viscous, Non-Newtonian Fluids Richard Grenville, Director of Mixing Technology, Philadelphia Mixing Solutions, Ltd. Reliable correlations have been developed for estimating blend times for Newtonian fluids in stirred tanks operating in the turbulent, transitional and laminar regimes. Most viscous fluids processed in the coatings, caulks and sealants industries exhibit non-Newtonian rheologies. Of these the vast majority are shearthinning. This means that the apparent viscosity of the fluid will be low near the impeller, where velocity gradients are high, and high near the vessel wall where velocity gradients are low. This presentation will discuss developments in impeller technologies for mixing this class of fluids, both for blending of vessel contents and dispersion of additives. Examples of typical mixing applications will be discussed.

Prior to her appointment Ms. Sutherland served as the Chief Counsel for the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Prior to PHMSA, Ms. Sutherland spent seven years at Fortune 25 Philip Morris/ Altria Client Services. Prior to her role at Altria, Ms. Sutherland spent six years in various legal roles at MCI/WorldCom, including Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. Paul Bertram Consultant, PRB Connect Paul is a Fellow of the Construction Specifications Institute and a Past Institute President His focus is on envelope first energy efficiency strategies with pathways to zero energy for a low carbon world.

His current work includes advocacy for resilient High Performance building energy efficiency. He served on the Board of Directors for the Business Council of Sustainable Energy for two years and was part of their delegation at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. In January 2016, he was named to the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Building Sciences and serves as liaison in Government Affairs, the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council and participates in the Off-Site Construction Council He is also a participant in the GSA Green Advisory Committee. As a Vietnam veteran, his community service is devoted to participation in the advisory committee for the Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs and the veterans they support.

Philip Bruce Secretary General, FEICA Philip Bruce is the Secretary General of FEICA (the Association of the European adhesive and sealant industry) and Director of PJB Chemical Consulting Ltd. Philip joined FEICA in January 2016 following a very successful career in the chemical industry. After graduating in chemistry from Aberdeen University, Philip worked for 23 years with ICI in the polyester, olefins and polymers businesses. Philip then joined Rugby Cement, where he was the UK Chief Executive for 2 years before moving to Accenture as an Associate Partner in the supply chain practice.

He became Managing Director of Scott Bader in the United Kingdom in 2005, where he led the company in global speciality chemical and adhesive sales. Passionate about business transformation and people, Philip retired from the responsibility of leading Scott Bader leaving the company in great shape for the future. David Byrne Sr. Director, C3 Derivatives Styrene, IHS Markit At IHS, David covers the Styrenics, Acrylic Acid, Acrylates and Super Absorbent Polymers markets. David Byrne holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada and an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Carleton University in Ontario. He has over 28 years of experience in the chemical industry before joining IHS in 2014. David most recently worked for Styron LLC (now Trinseo) in Houston as Feedstocks Commercial Manager. Wei Chen Marilyn Dawson Sarles, M.D. Professor of C hemistry, Mount Holyoke College Professor Wei Chen is the Marilyn Dawson Sarles, M.D. Professor of Chemistry at Mount Holyoke College. She received B.A. in Chemistry from Smith College in 1992, M.S. in Chemistry from Yale University in 1993, and Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1997.

She was a Senior Polymer Scientist at W. L. Gore & Associates from 1997 to 1999 before starting her independent academic career. Professor Chen has received numerous awards for her research accomplishments including the Meribeth E. Cameron Award for Scholarship from Mount Holyoke College, the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and the Academic Research Enhancement Awards from the National Institutes of Health. Her research has been supported by ACS-PRF, Dreyfus, NIH, and NSF.

Mark Collatz Director of Regulatory Affairs, Adhesives and Sealant Council Mark Collatz is Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Adhesive and Sealant Council and has been active in that role with the Council for over 20 years.

He previously served in a similar capacity in the general aviation industry and was a member of the staff of U.S. Congressman Robert Carr. He received a B.A. and M.A. from Michigan State University.

Lawrence Drzal Director, IACMI Vehicle Technology Area/University Distinguished Professor, Michigan State University Professor Lawrence T. Drzal is a University Distinguished Professor in the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Department in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University. He is also the Director of the Composite Materials and Structures Center at Michigan State University. From 1991-1999 he was co-Director of the NSF State/Industry/University Center for Low-Cost, High-Speed Polymer Composites Processing at MSU and recently was appointed Director of the Vehicle Technical Application Area in the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI). In 2007, Dr. Drzal co-founded XG Sciences, Inc, a private Michigan company that is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of graphene nanoplatelets using processes and technologies developed in his lab at MSU. Joelle Frechette Associate Professor, Johns Hopkins University Joelle Frechette received her PhD from Princeton University in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science in 2005 studying adhesion in electrochemical environment. After postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley where she investigated unwanted adhesion in microelectromechanical systems, she joined the Hopkins Faculty in 2006. Joelle Frechette was awarded the NSF CAREER award in 2008 and the ONR Young Investigator Award in 2011. Her research interests are in the area of interfacial science, adhesion, wetting, and colloids.

Maureen Gorsen Partner, Alston & Bird Ms. Gorsen is the former director of the California DTSC, where she directed regulation of waste, soil and water cleanups under CERCLA, RCRA, and brownfields laws. She spearheaded the California Green Chemistry Initiative and resulting laws governing chemicals under the California Safer Consumer Product rules and other state’s products programs and federal TSCA Reform. Ms. Gorsen is the former general counsel of the California Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the former general counsel for the California Natural Resources Agency. In these roles, she oversaw policies that enforce California’s environmental laws, including Prop 65, the Endangered Species Act, Coastal Act and CEQA. Michaela Hofbauer Global Market Leader Adhesives, Eastman Chemical Company Michaela Hofbauer started her career at Hercules Inc. as Senior Chemist in 1996, developing foodsafe wet strength additives for paper. She held several managerial positions in Resins Technology for Hercules and Eastman before joining the Eastman Marketing Group in 2007, where she was responsible for the tire industry, the global packaging market, and since 2014 for the adhesive market globally. Mike Idacavage VP Business Development, Colorado Photopolymer Solutions Dr. Mike J. Idacavage’ s work in the area of radiation curing started at Eastman Chemicals with the establishment of a photopolymer lab in 1985 and he has continued in the energy curing industry since that time. Mike has served as President of RadTech North America for the 2009 to 2010 term. Currently, Mike is the Vice President of Business Development for CPS. He heads up the Sales and Marketing efforts for the Environmental Certification Services division. Prior to SCS, Steve held the role of Global Sustainability/Open Innovation Manager at Haworth Inc. Before coming to Haworth, Kooy worked as a commercial construction project manager for a family owned business.

Keith Nelson Principal Scientist, Total Cray Valley Keith A. Nelson joined Cray Valley in 2009 as Manager, Hydrocarbon Resins. In 2013 he was appointed Principal Scientist for Total Cray Valley. His responsibilities fall in the area hydrocarbon resin product and process development. Keith’s prior experience includes over 14 years with ExxonMobil’s Adhesion Industry Business where he held responsibilities that included catalytic and hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin process and product development, adhesive polymer development, applications development, and customer technical support. Keith received a BS in Professional Chemistry from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Utah after which he served as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Arizona.

Edward Peters Chief Scientist, SABIC Edward Peters is a Chief Scientist at SABIC. He has a B. S. in Chemistry from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Purdue University. After 7 years at Union Carbide Corporation, he joined SABIC (née GE Plastics) in 1980. Mark joined Malvern in 2008 as a product technical specialist for the Zetasizer Nano and Viscotek products concentrating in bioscience SEC applications. Gary Robe Principal Technical Representative, Eastman Chemical Company Gary Robe received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Western Kentucky University in 1979 and worked in the PSA tape industry for 12 years before joining Eastman Chemical Company in 1991. Paul Totten Vice President, Building Enclosures, WSP Group Paul E. Totten is a Vice President at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff and leads the Building Enclosures Division. He has over 20 years of experience in the fields of structural engineering, building enclosure technology and commissioning, and building science. He has concentrated his expertise on the evaluation and analysis of heat, air, and moisture transfer, and the cumulative effect these elements have on building components and building operation. Eric Walmet Charleston Plant Manager, Ingevity Eric Walmet is Plant Manager of Ingevity’s Charleston Chemical Plant. Eric has spent 20 years with Ingevity (the former chemical division of Westvaco and then MeadWestvaco). The majority of Eric’s career has been spent in operations at the Charleston Plant. He has worked as a Production Engineer and Production Manager in the Charleston Plant’s Refinery and Derivative’s production areas prior to assuming the role of Plant Manager in January 2016. Eric has B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Grace Wan Technical Leader, Adhesive Technology in FS, Dow Chemical Company Grace holds a Bachelor of Science in Polymer Chemistry from Wuhan University and a Ph.D. in Polymer Materials/Oral Biology from Ohio State University. After receiving her Ph.D. in 2000, Grace joined The Dow Chemical Company in Emulsion Polymer Business R&D and later moved to Formulation Science in Corporate R&D. Grace is mainly on new product developments for adhesives, coatings, and Home & Personal cares utilizing skills in polymer synthesis, formulations, process development, and material science.

Qifeng Wang Postdoctoral researcher, Northwestern University Qifeng Wang earned his Ph.D. degree in polymer chemistry and physics at Jilin University in 2009.

After that, he did postdoc research at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan and Florida State University. Currently, he is a postdoc at Northwestern University working with Professor Kenneth R. Shull. His research interests focus on microindentation for the adhesion of soft materials, phase and mechanical behaviors of polyelectrolyte complexes, and ultrathin _ltration membranes for water puri_cation.

Nat Weiner Plant Manager, Avery Dennison Nat Weiner is a professional with over 20 years of progressive experience in Operations Leadership, Engineering, and Six Sigma roles primarily in the Adhesives, Plastics, Specialty Chemical, and Petrochemical Industries. For a majority of his career Nat has worked in Process Safety Management regulated facilities. He is currently the Plant Manager for Avery Dennison’s Site in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania. Nat hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.

Ling Zhang-Watson Global Application Development Leader, Dow Chemical Company Ling Zhang-Watson is the global application development leader for hot melt adhesives at Dow Elastomers group. She joined Dow after receiving her PhD from department of Chemical Engineering and Material Science at the University of Minnesota. At Dow, Ling has worked on a wide range of projects. She invented the isocyanate-free VORASIL® technology, led application development efforts in consumer products, and is now focusing her efforts on application development for hot melt adhesives.
