Welcome to a New Year ASCET and our 60th year! This is very exciting times! I have transitioned from the presidency to the COB position. I will be guiding our organization into our future. There are new beginnings for many of us as Steve Redden steps into the President position and Marty Sabla into the President-Elect position. We are looking at another 4 years of solid representation. Our new leadership is focusing more on the education and training at the local levels. This will make the experiences more personal and provide more one-on-one opportunities to get more people excited in being part of the organization. The landscape of the industries we represent has changed and many of the organizations have also changed to meet the ever-changing financial landscape of our day. We are hopeful to develop this excitement all year long to carry into the ASCET ACE. This year being held at the BWI Hilton, November 13 & 14, 2024. This is a Wednesday and Thursday. We have many of the same type of offerings in training and education for our entire organization as we have done in the past.

We thank our past COB, Paul Flannigan, for his many years of service to us in the organization and on the Board of Governors at NICET. This is also Paul’s last year as a board member, NICET is currently accepting applications for the open position. We welcome Steve Redden as our president, he has been involved in the northeast and is stepping in with a new vision and drive. We welcome Marty Sabla to his new position of President-Elect, he has been our Central and Southeast regional VP over the last 4 years. Marty comes to us after serving these positions and is a leader in the civil side of the NICET certified techs. With this move the Southeast Regional VP is open and we are currently seeking a replacement. If interested, please send your resume to the Election Committee. The Western Regional VP position remains available, again if interested please send your resume to the Elections Committee. The other changes we have had this year is the Communication Director position has been renamed as the Marketing Director and we welcome Jamie Redden into that position. She comes to us having experience in the marketing and media industries. We are excited to have the publication of the Informer back out again. We are always looking for those who would like to write articles and engage the community. To write articles and publish these provides you CEU’s. Send the articles to Jamie at marketing@ascet.org. There are opportunities to step up and to do presentations, this provides CEU’s. To continue with some other changes, Steaven Billock our Central Regional VP has stepped down with Henry Fontana stepping up to fill the position. We thank Steaven Billock for his years of service trying to grow into a position after relocating to Ohio from Hawaii. Steaven Billock provides training for Carrier Global, and we wish him continued success! Welcoming in Henry Fontana who was our Membership Director. Henry comes to us with a wealth on industry contacts and knowledge of the fire protection industry. We are excited to see the impact that will be made. Now the position of Membership Director is open. If there is anyone seeking to be involved and engage the ASCET community, please send your resume.

I would like to congratulate Kyle Watterworth, our Northeastern Regional VP, he has been working hard

to live up to the ideas of our leadership in his region. Last year in Kimberton, PA he organized with the assistance of the Southeastern PA chapter of ASCET to put on regional training with 20 vendors to assist in supporting the event. He is currently organizing another event in Northern New Jersey with the assistance of the North Jersey Chapter of ASCET. This chapter in north Jersey has been involved with the school Lincoln Technical as well as other community events. To get back to Kyle he is really pushing to do this all around. He is looking in the north areas of his region and all the way to Baltimore. He is really working hard to promote what we are all about, education and training. His model can be used anywhere in the nation to have your own local training sessions. The Kansas City Chapter did this every few years. Kyle is also working with AFSA and AFAA to promote more opportunities in the nation. There are still a ton of online opportunities, but we have learned our members are all about the face to face and in person event. Great work and thank you Kyle! We are grateful for continued hard work you are providing what the members desire and for our community.

We have added the Central Carolinas Chapter of ASCET in Charlotte, NC and with the help of the Henry get the Akron Chapter and the Columbus Chapter of ASCET back up and running. We are looking for driven, energetic, hardworking individuals looking to invest in themselves and the organization. We are excited about our growth in these areas. We have been working on communicating with the other chapters. The responses back to us have been few. There needs to be a two-way dialog to grow further and make the association stronger. We are also trying to get the membership numbers increased in hopes of leading to more chapters. From discussions with other organizations this appears to be a challenging area for all. I noticed this year many of the organizations have increased their membership fees. We did 2 years ago after 30 years of no increases. With increasing costs there really was no choice or we would not survive the financial climate of today.

On the topic of Intersociety, I have been in touch with many of the fire sprinkler and fire alarm organizations, as well as the SFPE, we are working and supporting each other and the events we are having. Looking for assistance to get in at ASHE however there appears to be a hurdle. All contacts and people we knew are no longer there. This is important so that we have all areas of NICET covered. NICET has not come through as they once have. There are opportunities for the sharing and support of our information and theirs is not the same as was in the past. We used to be able to count on some funding, list of NICET Techs, and advertising support. The tests are there but you must go to Alexandria to assist in the test development. We are challenged with the ability to get in touch with these new and renewing techs and get out the message of our organization as we once did. As mentioned in a report by Paul. Again Paul’s tenure is coming to an end on the board. It is important to have an ASCET member on the board. Please apply if this sounds like something you are looking to get involved in. Past meetings have been with NSPE who did not realize what NICET did or what ASCET was. This means there is a turn and no focus put on the certified technician. This is a huge handicap! We are part of the design team and do the groundwork for the engineers’ dream including correcting it.

With this New Year Report and I am hopeful for our organization, we need people to get more involved to make it better for a longer time. It appears that the volunteerism around our nation and our communities is falling off at a dramatic rate. I have been involved in volunteering and trying to get others involved for a very long time from church to children’s sports to ASCET. It is the key to bringing in new blood. How do we appeal to the younger generations, there are many articles indicating what to do. I have read

many. I have implemented some of these actions in trying to improve the appeal. There has been minimal response. The younger generations are more interested in going to work and then going home. How do they obtain points? I think back to the old days where no audits were performed, and some people made it up. Then NICET started the audit process. Being a NICET certified tech appears to have lost some of its appeal to many areas of the nation, with only a few areas in the nation continuing it to be a required item. Many new people entering the industry are not even worried about getting certified. It appears that the people who did care about professionalism and self-improvement has passed. The people that I grew up with in the industry still have many of them who should be retired, are not and are still working and involved in many of the professional organizations. Now that I am one of the older, I ask, do I want to retire? I see that there are very few people entering the industries and many people not knowing how to do anything. This goes from my industry to construction as a whole. I deal with many young people that have never built a birdhouse. What does that tell us? It shows there are people that are relying on computers and AI to do the work. I may be old school, but I do not see AI or computers being able to provide the stories to build things. I say this because every situation does not exactly meet a scenario and requires input from many. There is a bunch of gray that no one really looks for or at. I continue looking forward to resolution, improvement, and moving forward! We will continue to improve and get answers as we need to allow our organization to continue and grow!

I also like to quote Buzz Lightyear as well because we are never limited, and it is a great saying.… “To infinity and beyond!”

In closing, I never want to stop the opportunity of being more than we ever thought we could be! There is so much to learn and absorb! Take advantage of those opportunities

Fun Facts about Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are fascinating devices with a rich history and critical Role in fire safety. Here are some interesting facts about them.

1. **Invention and Evolution:** The first automatic smoke detector was patented in 1890 by Francis Upton, a colleague of Thomas Edison. However, it was not until 1965 that affordable smoke detectors for home use were developed, revolutionizing fire safety by making these devices accessible to the general public.

2. **Radioactive Material:**

Ionization smoke detectors contain a very small amount of americium-241, a radioactive material. Despite its radioactivity, the amount used is minuscule and enclosed within the detector, making it safe for household use under normal conditions.

3. **Legislation and Impact:**

The widespread adoption of smoke detectors in homes and businesses has been significantly influenced by legislation. In the 1970s and 1980s, laws and building codes began requiring smoke detectors in new construction, which led to a dramatic decrease in fire-related deaths and injuries in countries that implemented such regulations.

Modern smoke detectors can connect to home automation systems and the internet, pro viding real-time alerts to your phone or other devices, even when you’re not home. This technology can significantly increase safety by enabling faster response times to potential fires.

7. **Different Types for Different Fires:** As mentioned, ionization smoke detectors are quicker to detect flaming, fast-burning fires, while photoelectric detectors are better at sensing slow-burning, smoldering fires. This distinction underscores the importance of selecting the right type of detector for different areas of a home or building.

8. **Recycling and Disposal:** Because ionization detectors contain radioactive material, many regions have specific guidelines for their disposal. It’s encouraged to return them to the manufacturer or dispose of them through a hazardous waste facility to ensure safe handling of the radioactive components.

9. **World Smoke Detector Requirement Disparities:**

The installation of smoke detectors in residential properties is mandated by law in many countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia. However, there are still many parts of the world without such regulations, leading to varying levels of fire safety preparedness.

Smoke detectors have a profound impact on fire safety, significantly reducing the risk of death and injury from fires. Their ongoing development and integration into smart home systems continue to enhance their effectiveness and convenience.

Fire Sprinkler Career Day

by Chesapeake Bay Chapter of AFSA

On Thursday, February 22nd the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of AFSA (American Fire Sprinkler Association) hosted a fire sprinkler career day at the CAT North technical high school in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The chapter visited the school back in November to bring awareness of the fire sprinkler industry to these students and because of the overwhelming response, hosted this job fair and demo day complete with contractors, vendors, demonstrations and resume collections for employment. The students were engaged and very interested in finding out what our industry has to offer.

Over 70 students were in attendance with curriculums in electric, plumbing, welding and CAD. The intent of the original visit was to make sure these young people were aware that their experience in these high school classes can prepare them for a career in the fire sprinkler industry.

Many of these young people were not even aware what opportunities are available right out of high and for their futures. This is the audience and

section of the next generation that we need to educate and bring aware of our industry.

The chapter is planning more career and awareness days throughout the area to enable these students to see the future available in the fire sprinkler.

NICET's Board of Governors (BoG) meets twice each year to set strategic goals and establish operating policies for NICET Board members serve in a volunteer capacity Seven are knowledgeable in the fields of engineering and engineering technology, while the eighth represents the general public.

Board members are selected by a nominating committee and confirmed by the Board It is a multifaceted process that includes vacancy announcements issued by NICET, the Interest Groups of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and other engineering societies including the American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians. Self-nominations by NICET certificants and NSPE members are also accepted. A term on the Board lasts three years, and Board members may serve up to two consecutive terms.

New Water-Based Systems Layout Exams

Release Date July 8, 2024

NICET will release new updated exams for WBSL certification on July 8, 2024 The current exams will no longer be available at that time The new exam content will be based on the 2022 edition of NFPA 13 and several other updated references. The details are available on the WBSL Program Page of NICET’s website

NICET began the update and maintenance process for WBSL in September 2022 with a Job Task Review (JTR). The first step of the JTR is completed by a group of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and practitioners who assess the existing certification content and requirements against industry best practices. Next, a survey was distributed to a wider audience of practitioners, certificants, and other stakeholders to validate the JTR

Once validated the JTR Report was presented to and approved by the NICET Board of Governors in April 2023. SMEs and practitioners in collaboration with NICET staff continued the update with item writing, item edits, item review, item approval, test assembly, a passing score study and standard setting in sequence. NICET is following the ISO/IEC 17024 Standard Conformity assessment — General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons for this update and will seek accreditation following the release of the new exams.

The American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians

For six decades, the American Society of Certified Engineering has been at the forefront of promoting excellence in the field of engineering. This esteemed organization has a rich history of supporting and advancing the profession through various initiatives and programs.

ASCET was established in 1964 during an organizational meeting sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). The primary goal of ASCET was to promote the concept of an “engineering team” and to pursue mutual goals among engineering professionals. In conjunction with ASCET, NSPE also founded the Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (ICET) as a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the certification needs of the engineering technology community. During the inaugural meeting on April 3-4, 1964, certified engineering technicians from seventeen states gathered in Kansas City, MO. Mr. Joseph M. Parish, P.E. repre-

sented NSPE in the establishment of ICET, which later evolved into NICET.

Mr. Parish played a crucial role in supporting and advancing the objectives of ASCET, leading to the creation of a scholarship in his honor.

ASCET’s mission is to elevate the status of technicians and technologists as essential members of the engineering team. By joining a nationally recognized society like ASCET, members demonstrate their commitment to professionalism and ongoing education. One of the earliest ASCET chapters, the San Antonio/ Austin chapter, was formed in 1964 with the assistance of Cliff Knezek and other dedicated individuals. Cliff Knezek, a long-time member of the chapter, passed away in March 2022 at the age of 100. His contributions to the organization were invaluable, and he will be remembered for his dedication to the profession.

ASCET is a professional society focused on promoting professionalism and providing educational opportunities for its members. It is not a certification body, but

rather a community of like-minded individuals who care deeply about their work and its impact on the world. The organization consists of 4 regions and 25 active chapters within the organization. The regions include Northeast, Central, Southeast, and Western. Each chapter provides a platform for members to network, learn, and grow in their profession. Members of ASCET are involved in various fields such as Fire Protection, Civil Engineering, Radio and Telecommunications, and are certified by 15 different certification bodies including NICET, ASQ, WACEL, CCTT, NARTE, and more. The ASCET National Convention is held annually in November. Local chapter meetings occur monthly from September to May, and various special events are held throughout the year, many of which are free to attend. TESTING ASD SYSTEMS WITH THE SOLO 365

The Solo 365 Electronic Smoke Detector Tester is lighter to use, quicker to test, and suitable for more applications. It’s supplied with a clear test cup, which is ideal for testing point type smoke detector testers. The clear cup is easily removable and can be replaced with a fitted ASD adapter, putting the ability to test both standard point type smoke detectors and ASD systems into one portable tester. With the ASD adapter, an ASD System can be tested by using the ‘Delayed Start Mode.’

INSTALLING THE ASD ADAPTER

Ensure Solo 365 is powered off.

With the Solo 365 facing you, remove the cup by aligning the notch on the left hand side arm and disengage by squeezing the cup, gently easing the cup away from the arm.

Rotate the cup to free it from the other arm.

Fit the ASD adaptor by locking it into both arms. Ensure that the fan symbol is located on the side of the unit where smoke is emitted. (LHS when unit is facing the user).

TESTING WITH THE ASD ADAPTER

Power on the Solo 365.

Select the ‘Delayed Start Mode’ by pressing the ‘function button’ for one second – the status LEDs will flash orange.

Within 20 seconds, ensure that the Solo 365 is located over the sampling hole on the aspirating pipe to carry out the test.

Smoke will automatically be generated for 20 seconds, indicated by the status LEDs flashing blue.

You will make many new personal contacts and develop professional skills that can increase your efficiency on the job. You will also become more knowledgeable about all aspects of your Society and its continuing efforts to promote the recognition of the Certified Engineering Technician. Fire Alarm Systems Training classes at Cape Fear Community College will start April 29, 2024 and registration link is below. Our courses are self-paced and offered online to anyone with an Internet connection. The registration fee for the four-month course is $185 (USD) and awards 14.4 CEU’s. NICET awards 1 CPD point for 0.1 CEU (10 points per CEU). Those who are using the course to obtain NICET Continuing Personal Development (CPD) points will max out the category “Additional Education” and earn 72 points. Alarms 101

This course is designed for those individuals who are in the fire alarm industry and will focus on fundamentals. Students will learn basic electrical theory and understand resistance, voltage and current. Individuals currently in the fire alarm industry would benefit from the concepts and theories, which will be built upon in the Alarms 102 course.

Students will also acquire a basic understanding of the physics involved in the chemical reaction and the by-products of fire. Students will learn basic electrical workmanship and installation methods of fire alarm equipment and devices. The student will gain an understanding of the requirements of codes and standards that govern fire alarm systems and installations. (14.4 CEU/45 CPD awarded)

Students will become familiar with NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, and NFPA 70, the National Electric Code (NEC). These references are consistent with NICET’s allowable references for Level I and II Fire Alarm Systems exam(s).

Alarms 102

This course is designed for individuals who are fire alarm technicians or have intermediate experience in the fire alarm industry and will focus on application and design. The subject matter will build upon concepts addressing the behavior and generation of smoke, the combustion process and the requirements of codes and standards that govern fire alarm systems and installations. (14.4 CEU/45 CPD awarded)

Students will become familiar with NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, NFPA 70, the National Electric Code (NEC), NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, and the International Building (IBC). These references are consistent with NICET’s allowable references for Level III and IV Fire Alarm Systems exam(s).

 The John E. Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund will enhance the quality of life in our community by cultivating Life Safety (Fire Alarm) Engineering Technicians and promoting industry certification by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).

 Important Note: At Cape Fear Community College, scholarships come in the form of a reimbursement of expenses for continuing education courses. CFCC does not award scholarship funds prior to enrollment or payment of tuition for a course. If selected, you will receive the scholarship funds upon meeting the eligibility requirements and providing this application along with proof of participation in the exam.

 Students who receive scholarship funds will be asked to submit a thank‐you letter to their scholarship donor(s) prior to receiving scholarship funds.
