A

bout a year ago, as we were celebrating Ascension’s 20th anniversary, I joined fellow Ascension Leadership Team members in a commissioning ceremony in St. Louis. We were presented a flame, symbolically entrusting the future of this ministry to us as we were called to lead during changing times and form the next generation of leaders. I shared my favorite story from the Bible that day.

It’s the story of Mary and Martha, two sisters who opened their home to Jesus. Martha busied herself getting everything prepared, while Mary simply sat at the foot of Jesus. At one point, Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself?

Tell her to help me!” Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

I think this story bears significance for Ascension as we recognize more than two decades as a national healing ministry.

We serve in different locations across the country — some from our homes and others in our sites of care every day. We serve in different roles, each bringing different perspectives and talents to our work. But we all share the same Mission to care for all — especially those who are poor and vulnerable. We all are advocates for a compassionate and just society through our actions and our words. And we all are dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities.

At the time that we were commissioned, none of us had any idea what 2020 would have in store; and we have no way of knowing what we might experience in 2021. It would be easy to get worried about so many things. And yet, this year has proven just how resilient and strong we are when we work together toward a common purpose. And what greater purpose is there than caring for those who need it the most?

“We’ve seen how important collaboration and cross-functional teamwork has been, especially at a time when change seems to be the only constant. That connection, that ‘one thing,’ is rooted in our common commitment to our Mission.”

In this issue of Good Day Ascension, we delve into many ways we have endeavored to stay connected, even while separated more than ever by physical space. We’ve seen how important collaboration and cross-functional teamwork has been, especially at a time when change seems to be the only constant. That connection, that “one thing,” is rooted in our common commitment to our Mission.

In these pages we also review our recovery efforts, including playing a part in clinical trials and vaccine research. And we shine a light on the important topic of diversity and inclusion and our new ABIDE framework.

As I reflect on the past and look to the future and our 22nd year together, I am confident that we will only become stronger and closer as an integrated health ministry. May we always remember the “one thing” we hold in common, and may God continue to bless our ministry and those we are privileged to serve.

Sacred work in times of suffering

O

ver the past six months, we have, more than ever before in most of our lifetimes, experienced a time of collective suffering. Each one of us can point to the ways in which our lives have been disrupted and even changed as we navigate this new landscape. In the midst of it all, we are witnessing the reverence our associates hold for one another and for those we serve. Our stories in these pages are a brief glimpse into what it means to truly care for everyone, especially those living in poverty, recognizing the dignity of each person.

We remember all who came before us serving the needs of everyone they encountered.

In their stories, like those here and others we will continue to share, we see that all work is sacred when it reverently serves others in life and in death — others who were loved into existence and made in the image and likeness of God. Nowhere is this clearer than in Gayle Novack’s moving story, told as the pandemic surged last spring. Gayle is the Chief Nursing Officer at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit. She was recorded on Google Meet by Chris McClead, Director, Ministry Formation, Ascension Michigan.

Gayle describes an encounter one Saturday with engineers constructing a temporary morgue. “I never really thought about engineers doing work on an object as sacred work. But they did. They saw it as their sacred work,” she says. “And I was so grateful to be able to be with them, and to see that, and to know that they continued that level of caring for honoring the dignity of those who had died.” To hear Gayle’s story, go to ascension.org/GDAlinks.

New Ascension Leader Institute site brings resources and programs to your fingertips ASSOCIATES CAN NOW ACCESS LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OPTIONS ONLINE

L

earning, development and formation have been part of Ascension since its founding, and this emphasis was further solidified with the creation of the Ascension Leader Institute in 2015. Now, all of the institute’s resources and offerings are available in one online repository.

The Ascension Leader Institute website launched this summer, providing a place for all associates to access learning, development and formation offerings to help them reach their personal and professional goals — wherever they are on their career journey in mind, body and spirit.

The website features information about hundreds of self-paced learning solutions; wellness resources; structured orientation and onboarding platforms; nomination-based formation and development cohort offerings; and networking communities. Many are aligned with competencies critical for career progression and can support associates as they consider possible future roles through the myCareer internal recruitment process.

“Since its creation, the Ascension Leader Institute has grown into a robust body of programs and resources that accelerates formation and development of associates across Ascension,” said Herb Vallier, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Ascension; Chief Executive Officer, Ascension SmartHealth Solutions. “Learning and formation have been an important aspect

of Ascension’s culture from the beginning, and now we have one centralized place for associates and leaders — regardless of role — to find programs and resources to help them grow and develop.”

The power — and the heart — of philanthropy DONATIONS TO ASCENSION FOUNDATIONS SUPPORT CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

H

eart conditions are the leading cause of death in the U.S. for both men and women, and Ascension’s foundations are bringing attention to philanthropic efforts around cardiovascular health.

Our Values stress a commitment to compassionate care for communities and individuals, and we have seen firsthand what happens when the power of philanthropy focuses on cardiovascular disease. Recently, three Ascension foundations received gifts from three very different donors, providing examples of the impact that donors are making across Ascension.

Tom Mackey, 85, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, made his fortune as an investment banker. Now he leads a quiet life; he isn’t married, doesn’t buy expensive clothes and enjoys the company of animals. At his core, Tom is a generous man. His feelings about the power of wealth align with Ascension’s vision for how philanthropy can provide care to communities in need.

“I’d rather give my money where it can help than spend it on myself,” Tom said. “I’d like to think I’ve made a little bit of difference in this world.”

In spring 2020, Tom donated $1 million to Ascension St. John Hospital for a hybrid catheterization lab.

“Mr. Mackey’s generous donation will provide advanced technology and allow our expert cardiology team to deliver the best possible percutaneous cardiovascular intervention,” said Thomas LaLonde, MD, Chief, Cardiology and Cardiovascular Services, Ascension St. John.

In fiscal year 2020, Ascension foundations raised a total of $102,601,762.

Owen Vickers suffered a heart attack while attending a church function. He credits his survival to “the good Lord, two angel nurses, an outstanding surgeon, and the care received at [Ascension] St. Vincent’s in Birmingham, Alabama.”

Owen and his wife, Marsha, longOwen and Marsha Vickers standing supporters of Ascension, knew they could trust Ascension St. Vincent’s technologically advanced, quality care to get them through a triple bypass and a valve replacement. Owen truly believes in the power of Ascension’s care, and he wants others to be inspired, too.

“A gift to St. Vincent’s is a special thing, because they take special care of you,” Owen said. “I would just encourage everyone to get on the St. Vincent’s Foundation bandwagon.”

Through gifts from donors like Owen and Marsha, Ascension St. Vincent’s recently established a Cardiovascular Patient Assistance Fund and updated family and patient areas.

For years, Chris Cavner relied on Ascension Seton in Texas to safeguard her health. So when she experienced a heart attack, she knew exactly where to go.

“I knew I’d get the very best care and I didn’t have to second-guess it,” Chris said. “I had a high level of confidence in Ascension Seton.”

Following her heart transplant, she was given 24-hour support from a postoperative nurse. Two years into recovery, Chris marked her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband, Dennis, all thanks to the care she received at Ascension Seton and her transplant cardiologist, Clay Cauthen, MD. Chris and Dennis were so grateful for the high quality of care at Ascension Seton that they made the lead gift to the Ascension Seton Cardiovascular Fellowship Program and have been working with other donors to establish funding for nine endowed fellowships.

myCareer helps associates grow and develop A NEW PROGRAM OFFERS A CUSTOMIZED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

scension’s myCareer was established to help associates grow their career — making it easier to move across departments and units, including across markets and state lines. As Ascension’s hiring focus shifted inward, we transitioned our external job postings to internal opportunities, which enabled associates to share their talents and expand their skill sets, working in different areas across our national health ministry.

“We’ve always known that we had a strong, capable, compassionate workforce,” said Herb Vallier, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Ascension; Chief Executive Officer, Ascension SmartHealth Solutions. “This shift in the way we approach recruitment has allowed our associates to be more involved in the decision-making process, reduced onboarding time and resources, supported those departments that needed additional help, and, perhaps most importantly, allowed us to share our associates’ gifts in such a way that we’re sustaining the vibrancy of our healing ministry.”

Through myCareer, associates share job preferences and experiences using an online tool. Then they’re presented with new job openings that match their interests and skill sets and are guided through a transfer process with the Human Resources team.

In the first four months of the myCareer program, nearly 32,000 associates completed a profile and 58% of our total offers were to associates who transitioned to new positions.

HR Talent Advisors and Nursing Career Coaches play an integral role in supporting associates in an ongoing process of discovery, exploration, preparation and investment.

Their efforts to make the recruitment and onboarding process as smooth as possible are key to the success of myCareer.

“If there are positions that are available, we want to make sure that our internal nurses are the ones who get first dibs on them,” said Cydney Colley, BSN, Nurse Career Coach for Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast. “They reach out to us and we help them figure out what they actually want to do. What is going to bring them joy? What are they passionate about?

And then I help them find those places within Ascension where they’ll fit.”

“These associates are working hard every day to live our Mission and care for patients,” said Kristin Swaffer, HR Talent Advisor. “It feels great to reward them with the move that they have been waiting to make.”

The myCareer program launched during the COVID-19 pandemic as a customized experience to benefit associates’ career pathway development. It has since become a lasting and sustainable part of Ascension’s cultural fabric, with a devoted team building development plans linking to an associate’s professional goals. ASCENSION PARTICIPATES IN COVID-19 RESEARCH, VACCINE TRIALS Across Ascension, research is playing an important role in our understanding and treatment of COVID-19.

“My advice is to always be looking to move internally,” said Rebecca Bilbrey, MSN, RN, Nursing Coach, Ascension Saint Thomas in Tennessee. “Moving internally does not mean that you are unhappy with your current position. It means that you are ready to grow. At Ascension, we want to create an environment in which our nurses and other associates thrive.

Our first phase 3 vaccine trials began in August, with Moderna in Alabama and Inovio in Wisconsin and Michigan. Several other vaccine trials are in discussion.

Indiana and Florida are participating in the phase 3 trial of Regeneron’s monoclonal antibodies, an exciting potential alternative to convalescent plasma therapy, which we are providing at many of our sites. Finally, many Ascension care sites are participating in a number of other important clinical trials related to COVID-19.

PERSONAL PROFILE

Getting to know you REGGIE NEWSON IS THE VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF ADVOCACY OFFICER FOR ASCENSION WISCONSIN. HE COLLABORATES WITH COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS LEADERS ALONG WITH FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL LAWMAKERS TO ADDRESS AN EVOLVING LEGISLATIVE AND HEALTHCARE REGULATORY LANDSCAPE.

Q: How has your experience in the public sector had an impact on your work at Ascension?

A: I worked in public service for over 20 years, leading state agencies and organizations; developing public policy; and cultivating relationships with elected officials, community representatives and civic leaders. As the former Workforce Labor Secretary of Wisconsin, I had experience partnering with healthcare leaders on their workforce issues. That experience prepared me to work for a mission-centric organization like Ascension.

Q: Why did you choose Ascension?

A: I was attracted to Ascension’s Mission. It called out to me and aligned with my values. I liked that it was a faith-based organization where I could live out my faith. I appreciate the focus on traditional values such as service. I believe that service to others is the rent we pay on earth.

I get up every day knowing that I can make a difference.

I feel supported by my leadership and enjoy knowing that ultimately I am serving patients and the community.

Q: Can you share an update about your involvement with some of Ascension’s recent transformation work?

A: As part of the work group charged with designing socially integrated systems of human flourishing, we sought to reduce missed prenatal visits for high-risk mothers. Our group stood up a pilot program that is now part of Ascension St. Joseph in Milwaukee.

We have made an impact and are now focused on perinatal improvements. We are supporting high-risk mothers by improving access to food and medicines. Additionally, we are working on aligning processes across Ascension related to community investment spending.

Q: What is your biggest advocacy challenge?

A: I believe in respectfully listening to all viewpoints. We

can disagree without being disagreeable. I ascribe to the perspective that “I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Q: How would you describe your approach to leadership?

A: I believe in servant leadership. You serve the people that you have the honor and privilege to serve. The way you influence others is through respect, honor and service.

I aspire to be a leader with a powerful mixture of personal humility, perseverance and indomitable will.

nnual wellness visits are a great way to stay connected with your doctor. The purpose of the visit is to help find potential health issues before they become a major problem. When you see your doctor each year, he or she is able to detect things early. Early detection is your best chance of getting efficient treatment that works. It’s a simple and easy thing you can do to make sure your body is thriving.

You can also work with your doctor to build a complete family health history. Your family’s health history can help the doctor know what diseases to screen you for.

There are also telemedicine options for those who want to complete their annual wellness visit virtually. You don’t have to worry about leaving your house.

Talk to your doctor about virtual visits and getting the care you need from the comfort of your own home. Annual visits don’t have to be complicated! All you have to do is schedule an appointment with your doctor each year. It is one of the easiest preventive measures you can take for your health’s sake.

Staying connected in a world with COVID

T

he COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new way of thinking, acting and connecting for many of us. Front-line caregivers found ways to continue working on-site, with appropriate protocols and distancing. Other associates discovered new ways of working remotely, using technology to replicate in-office interactions virtually while keeping separate.

Despite the challenges on both ends of the spectrum, Ascension has emerged with a host of new strategies to keep us all connected.

Remote work The pandemic taught us many things, and one of them is how well associates adapted to productively work from home.

Beginning last March, many associates not on the front lines of care who were accustomed to working in an office setting in support of our Mission began to work remotely in alignment with safe social-distancing regulations.

This shift came with several key benefits, such as promoting health and safety, attracting and retaining committed associates, increasing financial savings for our associates, and facilitating better work/life balance. The transition to G Suite proved to be key to supporting real-time collaboration as well.

We asked a few remote associates about their experience thus far.

How the pandemic has impacted the way we work, think, collaborate and communicate

“I’ve actually been working remotely since 2016, but it’s been different with my family at home, too,” said Brian Johnson, Program Manager, Organizational Development and Learning. “Out of a need to help our associates, I feel like I’ve become an expert in things I never even thought of before the pandemic. Mission Alive 5K Ascension associates, family members, pets and friends across the country gathered virtually last summer to take part in the inaugural Mission Alive Virtual 5K Gratitude Run/Walk. The event celebrated and honored healthcare heroes, encouraged a healthy lifestyle, and supported a good cause.

Participants were encouraged to join an online conversation and take part in a social media campaign to show their progress over the weekend by adding #MissionAlive5K and #WeAreAscension to their photos and videos.

More than 12,830 participants registered for the event and nearly $30,000 was donated to the Ministry and Mission Fund, which — along with incredible support from in-market foundations — benefited the COVID-19 Associate Hardship Support Program.

Virtual peer support sessions Ascension recognized the need to provide a confidential space for associates to discuss work-related or personal issues and concerns. The solution was virtual peer support sessions, designed to help associates connect with peers across our healing ministry.

The series of local and national virtual peer support sessions is offered multiple times a day by chaplains and behavioral health specialists. The online sessions promote social connectedness with opportunities to share challenges and successes and provide a space for associates to share strategies for managing anxiety and traumatic stress. The sessions also create an avenue to share information about resources, System services and referrals when follow-up support or services are needed.

The Ascension Prayer and Reflection Resources website began when a Ministry Market requested COVID-19-specific prayers that could help front-line staff cope at the onset of the pandemic. In just days, it grew into a dynamic resource for caregivers on the front lines as well as for those supporting from home. In addition to several prayers and reflections, associates can submit a prayer request, find a virtual prayer group to join, or explore resources specific to their Ministry Market or subsidiary.

“We built this resource to meet associates where they are during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Timm Glover, Executive Vice President and Chief Mission Integration Officer, Ascension.

“It’s times like this that we turn to our spiritual center to find comfort and community. This resource helps us achieve that on a personal and integrated health ministry level.”

The page is one small aspect of the Response and Recovery site, which became a robust centralized repository where leaders and associates could stay connected to the most current information on a range of topics from working remotely and mindfulness to safety protocols and test guidance.

As Ascension President and CEO Joe Impicciche noted in his “Welcome” column in the summer 2020 Good Day Ascension, the agility and innovation that characterized Ascension’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic were rooted in our journey as a unified ministry, as well as a 10-year effort involving clinicians and others from across the ministry, including representatives from Ascension Medical Group and the medical staff, nursing, infection preventionists (IPs), pharmacy, clinical professional development, The Resource Group, Medxcel and TouchPoint.

“Thanks to the tremendous work of our clinicians over the past decade-plus, we were well positioned to respond to the pandemic,” Joe said.

Alongside their colleagues on the medical staff and in nursing, Ascension IPs worked tirelessly to develop isolation precautions, discharge and home care instructions for all care settings, screening protocols, and guidelines for critical staffing workflows.

In collaboration with The Resource Group and vendor partners, they developed solutions for securing and maintaining supplies of needed personal protective equipment for front-line clinicians.

With support from clinical professional development associates, they provided ongoing education and training for front-line caregivers on managing patients with COVID-19.

Like a majority of Ascension associates, IP team members worked long hours without time off from the beginning of the pandemic. A quote from pastor and author Robert H. Schuller became the IP team’s motto during its weekly calls: “Tough times pass, but tough people last.”

Patients campaign as a Hospital Engagement Network (HEN); 69 of our hospitals piloted a broad set of initiatives designed to increase clinical quality and safety. In 2013, the Ascension HEN was one of six chosen for the Leading Edge Advanced Practice Topics (LEAPT) program, which addressed additional areas for improvement. By the close of the federal program, physicians, nurses, and allied health and quality professionals from 98 Ascension hospitals led various process improvement initiatives and were able to achieve significant results.

Ascension evaluated the different infection prevention practices at its hospitals to identify opportunities for improvement. The evaluation results were published in the American Journal of Infection Control in 2013. In addition, Ascension was the first system to establish a process to improve the utilization of urinary catheters in emergency departments, which led to a reduction in placement of urinary catheters by one-third. The effort was adopted nationally by other systems and state hospital associations. During the HEN work, topics

addressed included septic shock, Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infections, central line-associated bloodstream infections and antimicrobial stewardship. All these areas of focus are associated with a risk of significant morbidity, mortality and cost to hospitalized patients.

Mohamad G. Fakih, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FSHEA, Chief Quality Officer, Clinical & Network Services, Ascension, at the time served as the HEN Physician Advisor for Infection and supported the implementation of the efforts to reduce infection harm across the System. The successful implementation of evidence-based interventions for these conditions improved the quality and length of patients’ lives: 3,461 injuries, infections and adverse events avoided and 291 lives saved.

STEP 2. New clinical decision tool to support infection prevention To support optimizing the performance of the infection preventionist, clinical associates from across the ministry

came together to choose a new tool designed to streamline the clinical workflow around infection prevention. The result: implementation of Ascension’s Infection Control Surveillance and Medication Management (ICSMM), a web-based clinical monitoring and performance reporting system that automates previously manual processes and enhances collaboration among IPs, pharmacists, medical staff and nursing.

By pulling in patient data from multiple systems, including pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, surgery and microbiology, ICSMM provides decision support and facilitates early recognition of infections and real-time interventions that produce better patient outcomes.

STEP 3. The challenge of H1N1, Ebola and other emerging pathogens Ascension has faced multiple emerging pathogens and pandemics. In 2009, we addressed pandemic preparedness for H1N1, from personal protective equipment to vaccination and measures to reduce exposure. Over the years, infection preventionists addressed — with System support — their readiness to identify and mitigate emerging pathogens.

Another example of System-led support was meeting Ebola head-on in 2015. Our industry-leading work on establishing strategies to overcome the risks of this lethal pathogen reflected the strength of having System support.

The preparedness efforts were summarized in a paper by Dr. Fakih; former Chief Quality, Safety and Nursing Officer Ann Hendrich, PhD; and then-Director of Clinical Excellence Michelle Heavens (now serving as Vice President, Operations, Clinical & Network Services): “Ebola as a Test for Emerging Pathogen Preparedness: The Critical Role of Health Systems in Ensuring Support” — in the June 2015 issue of Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

STEP 4. National engagement on antimicrobial stewardship Also in 2015, due to the rising threat of antibiotic resistance resulting from unnecessary antibiotic use, antimicrobial stewardship in the United States became a national priority.

The White House developed The National Strategy for Combating Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria (CARB), which called for hospitals and healthcare systems to implement antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs).

Ascension answered the call by establishing its first Center of Excellence (COE) for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention under Dr. Fakih’s leadership as Senior Medical

Director. The Ascension COE implemented local ASPs at every hospital, co-led by a physician and pharmacist, to ensure compliance with evidence-based antimicrobial use, optimal testing for infections and standardized disease management processes.

System-wide antimicrobial stewardship efforts resulted in 8.2% reduction in FY16 in total systemic antibiotic use, including 40% reduction in the quinolone class of antibiotics.

Ascension was recognized in the CDC’s “2017 Antibiotic Use in the United States Progress and Opportunities” as a model large system that had achieved swift progress in antimicrobial stewardship by implementing CDC core elements in its hospitals.

Ascension’s successful approach also was summarized in the paper “Health Systems Can Play a Pivotal Role in Supporting Antimicrobial Stewardship” in Clinical Infectious Diseases, in 2016. Key factors to success were leadership accountability, building a structure at the System and local levels, and having clear goals to achieve.

“Ascension’s approach is unique, especially with its implementation in a very large number of hospitals in 24 states, with diverse patient populations and variable hospital sizes, from very small to tertiary care teaching hospitals,” Dr. Fakih said at the time. “Our work is a true reflection of

the great teamwork among our physicians and pharmacists, which resulted in the positive patient care outcomes across our System, and our System-wide pioneering work is making a big difference to combat antimicrobial resistance.”

STEP 5. Focus on sepsis In 2016, new sepsis definitions and early warning signs were released and a task force with expertise in sepsis determined that healthcare practitioners required improved clinical prompts and diagnostic approaches to facilitate earlier identification. The elevated risk of mortality and the urgency of taking immediate action when treating all stages of sepsis eventually drove the development of the Surviving Sepsis campaign.

Ascension responded with renewed energy around early detection and implementation of standardized protocols for managing sepsis. In 2018 Ascension sponsored a formal awareness campaign that directly engaged more than 41,000 front-line caregivers.

For the first time in Ascension’s history, a campaign to enhance clinician awareness was paired with a public awareness campaign. Benefiting from input by Ascension’s national Person and Family Advisory Council, Ascension developed a robust suite of materials to engage patients and their family members in monitoring their loved ones for early signs of sepsis. The campaign resulted in 170 fewer deaths due to sepsis and an overall lower cost of care.

STEP 6: Preventing central line-associated bloodstream infections An initiative that ran parallel and in union with the sepsis campaign was standardization and optimization around our care of central lines in order to decrease central line bloodstream infections. This effort pulled together experts from across the System to standardize policy, education and products used for central lines. The result was a sustained and stunning 38% reduction in infection rates.

STEP 7: Mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic Fast-forward to 2020 and the advent of the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. Building on the infrastructure, protocols and engagement levels already in place from previous efforts, as well as our Mission-inspired Transformation Design Team initiatives, Ascension caregivers were more ready than many industry peers for the surge that came over them.

BRE AKING TH E CHAIN

Now, the team has one more forward-looking project to complete: the launch of a comprehensive myLearning eModule, “Breaking the Chain of Infection.”

“Breaking the Chain of Infection” addresses what we as individuals and as a team can do to break the chain of infection to deliver healthcare in a safe and healthy workplace. This new, 15-minute module, intended for all associates, especially those in clinical roles, discusses the six common occurrences through which germs are passed from person to person and provides suggested practices by which each of us can break that chain of infection.

Lisa Sturm, MPH, CIC, FAPIC, Senior Director for Infection Prevention, Quality, Clinical & Network Services, Ascension, said she likes the concept “as it ties it all together and shows that the best approach to prevention of infections is the multipronged approach, and that there is typically never one ‘solution’ to prevent all infections.”

“We, as humans, have to outsmart them every step of the way,” she said. The ‘Chain’ is important because it visually shows how each step is important, whether that is removing their reservoir (e.g., cleaning/disinfection), blocking their route (e.g. face masks), or staying healthy ourselves (e.g., vaccines, etc.).

“I remain positive we can beat COVID-19 by consistently implementing all of the elements of the ‘Chain of Infection,’ and teaching our associates and patients these principles as well.”

Lisa noted that it was Amy Wilson, DNP, RN, CPHQ, Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations, Ascension, who encouraged her to develop the module after seeing a version produced by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology on a slide Lisa presented.

“It does not matter if it is COVID, MRSA, VRE or C. diff; we owe it to our patients and our community to break the chain of infection, and it starts individually with each one of us,” Amy said. “And the truth is it was never about us; it has always been about protecting others and doing what’s best for our patients.”

“Front-line clinicians’ engagement as champions of the work has proven to be a key factor in Ascension’s success.

Ascension’s agility and team-based approach to care let us produce some great work during the pandemic,” said Richard Fogel, MD, Chief Clinical Officer, Clinical & Network Services.

“Now it’s up to us to sustain these efforts for the long term.”

Ascension readies for flu season during the COVID-19 pandemic Procurement and preparation are key elements of the plan

scension continues to manage our COVID-19 response and ensure we are well equipped for the 2020–2021 influenza season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that up to 56 million people got sick during the 2019–2020 flu season, up to 740,000 people were hospitalized and as many as 62,000 died.

While vaccination is key to preventing influenza, it is important for Ascension to be prepared for a possible surge of both COVID-19 and influenza cases. Therefore, in May, The Resource Group began to establish national pandemic solutions to help ensure readiness. The Resource Group plans to have sufficient inventory on hand across 35 essential products, which will be stored in accessible locations across the nation.

“You do not need the ability to predict the future in order to prepare for it,” said Scott Caldwell, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Resource Group.

The Resource Group’s Value Realization Teams are able to track usage rates and other operational metrics and to quickly adapt to meet Ascension’s needs related to supply procurement.

Influenza vaccination is key to reducing the impact of respiratory illnesses and resulting burdens on our healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, Ascension continues to communicate the importance of vaccination to associates and clinicians, as well as patients. In addition, with the speed of clinical trials for several possible COVID-19 vaccines, Ascension is ready to adopt appropriate approved measures to help protect associates and those we serve from that illness, too.

For example, Ascension requires all members of our workforce to receive an annual influenza vaccination. During the 2019–2020 flu season, Ascension achieved 99% compliance. As we approach the 2020–2021 flu season, we continue to encourage all associates providing services to receive the flu vaccine.

While prepping associates for the flu season in an effort to keep them and patients healthy, Ascension is also preparing to

address any lasting impact that COVID-19 may have on patients’ health, either to their preexisting chronic health conditions (e.g., exacerbation of asthma or diabetes) or from it creating new chronic conditions (e.g., kidney disease, lung disease, etc.).

“We are working with our clinicians Dr. Joseph Cacchione to keep them informed and educated on measures to prevent and manage COVID-19 infection so we can keep our environment safe and achieve better outcomes,” said Joseph Cacchione, MD, FACC, Executive Vice President, Clinical & Network Services, Ascension.

Ascension will continue to develop medical education and guidance based on the latest evidence-based research.

Continuing to share learnings across Ascension with other clinicians will also be valuable.

Another way Ascension is preparing is by modifying facilities to accommodate a more mixed population of COVID and non-COVID patients. Part of this work has included implementing modifications to all patient areas. A large, multidisciplinary team has worked to research and source items such as barriers, signage and furniture modifications to accommodate social distancing and crowd and line control, to help ensure both associate and patient safety. Visitor restrictions and appropriate screening for COVID-19 and the flu will continue to be implemented and guidance will be provided when necessary.

“Ascension stands ready to support our associates and clinicians as we move into the 2020-2021 influenza season,” said Craig Cordola, MBA, MHA, FACHE, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “COVID-19 has prepared us to be nimble and work together as one unified ministry to address any challenges we may face. Ensuring access to virtual care Ascension is breaking down telemedicine barriers

uring the COVID-19 pandemic, Ascension saw a significant shift in consumer behavior around virtual care and a sharp spike in use of this technology. In fact, Ascension experienced a 100-fold increase, with 720,000 virtual care visits compared to the same period (March through May) last year. Although this adoption has created another access point for patients, Ascension leaders are mindful of barriers that it may create for at-risk populations.

“There is concern that virtual care’s selective use may compound long-standing health disparities,” said Baligh Yehia, MD, MPP, FACP, Senior Vice President, Ascension, and President, Ascension Medical Group.

Many of the populations facing Dr. Baligh Yehia challenges in accessing in-person care — such as racial/ethnic minorities; persons living in rural communities; those with lower socioeconomic status; individuals with limited English proficiency; and those with low health literacy — may also face barriers in accessing virtual care.

“If virtual care continues to accelerate without engaging these vulnerable communities, it may sustain or exacerbate existing health disparities, something that Ascension has worked very hard to address during more traditional in-person visits,” Dr. Yehia said.

Ascension is mitigating these potential inequities in virtual care in three ways: 1) Identifying and resolving barriers to virtual care by understanding them for new patients during the registration process, and looking at technology solutions for new and existing patients that do not require a smartphone, but instead need only text messaging capability and cellular data, which can help facilitate access to those without Wi-Fi or smart devices.

The single biggest predictor of whether someone expects to use virtual care is whether he or she has used it in the past.

A poll of individuals who used Ascension Online Care during the COVID-19 pandemic found that 75% are more likely to use it again compared to those who have never used it at all. This suggests that if we can find virtual care solutions that work for vulnerable populations — by addressing access to smartphones, broadband internet, digital literacy and cost — and get them to try it once, they are likely to use it again. In the interim, Ascension is encouraging hybrid workflows that support a mix of telephone, video, in-person and home/community-based visits to ensure we reach these populations.

2) Addressing variations in clinician behavior and use of virtual care by enhancing and optimizing our facility-based telemedicine programs to offer more services to critical access hospitals and care clinics.

We know that some clinicians may not offer televideo visits to individuals they assume do not have access to a smartphone, may have challenges using technology, or may not be interested in virtual care. However, according to a University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging, almost half of patients between 50 and 80 years old preferred virtual care for follow-up visits. Ascension is helping clinicians expand their understanding of patient preference and use of virtual care, as well as helping them incorporate virtual care into their practice through ongoing training and education opportunities.

3) Advocating for structural, payment and policy changes for virtual care. To ensure we are able to provide access to virtual care that will best serve our diverse patient populations, Ascension advocates for statutory and regulatory reforms. These include addressing where Medicare and Medicaid patients and clinicians must be located, both physically and geographically, in order for virtual care services to be provided and covered; appropriately reimbursing

providers for virtual care services; expanding the types of services covered and groups of providers that can deliver virtual care; and addressing the ability of clinicians to deliver virtual care across state lines.

“As we continue to pioneer this new care delivery method, we must be mindful that disparities, though different in virtual care, still exist and must be tackled head-on,” Dr. Yehia said.

“Ensuring health equity in this area will require strong partnership among patients, communities, regulators and payers, technology providers, and healthcare teams. Ascension is committed to this important work as it is critical to realizing our Mission of serving all persons, especially those who are most vulnerable.”

At DePaul Community Health Centers in New Orleans, virtual care has increased the bonds of trust between at-risk patients and providers for behavioral health and medical services. This offering reduces some of the anxiety these patients experience about visiting public spaces during the pandemic. It has also allowed staff such as Dawn Richardson-Spears, Registered Nurse Care Manager, to assist those patients who aren’t tech savvy with using their phones or other devices for virtual care appointments.

ABIDE framework cultural transform HUMAN DIGNITY IS AT ITS CORE

nclusivity and diversity are demonstrations of Ascension’s Mission and Values, as well as an expression of Catholic social teaching. Ascension’s commitment to social justice was accelerated last summer with the development and launch of the ABIDE framework (Appreciation - Belongingness Inclusivity - Diversity - Equity) to address diversity and inclusion across the ministry.

“Human beings are created for justice, meaning each of us are ‘due’ justice simply because we are human,” said Timm Glover, Executive Vice President and Chief Mission Integration Officer. “If someTimm Glover one is not treated justly, we are denying their humanity and therefore denying that they are made in the image of God.” The ABIDE framework was designed to uncover what we need to review, dismantle or rebuild in our policies, practices and ways of serving together as a virtuous community, so that we can eliminate what contributes to or perpetuates disparities and inequities, including systemic racism. The ABIDE framework exists at multiple levels including at the individual, collective/team and organization level.

The ABIDE work group has taken inventory of the inclusion and diversity efforts across Ascension to identify ways to make inclusion, belongingness

and social justice a lasting, national effort. The actualization of those efforts has included new ways of listening, praying, learning and acting.

“Listening helps us to truly see,” Timm said. “We needed a framework to help us listen to each other differently than we have before so that we can really see each other. It is a powerful behavior in creating right relationships.”

Ascension has been offering associates opportunities to share their experiences and opinions through various channels. These have included live, facilitated webinars; a dedicated phone line; and the ability to submit feedback through the ABIDE website. The multiple listening and dialogue platforms are informing action planning and leadership development. These initial facilitated listening sessions focused on the topics of racism, systemic injustice, prejudice, bias and discrimination.

Future sessions may address other topics and social issues related to diversity and inclusion within the ABIDE framework.

Additionally, associates were offered personal development and self-discovery opportunities such as improving their ability to listen more effectively and efficiently and how this impacts personal and professional relationships.

oday’s patients face mounting drug costs and a complex process to get the prescriptions they need. Third parties such as pharmacy benefit managers, payers, manufacturers and wholesalers have created fragmentation that disrupts continuity of care.

When patients don’t have the clinical support they need, health outcomes can suffer, and the cost of care can rise unnecessarily.

Hospital, clinical and pharmacy leaders from across Ascension have come together to address this fragmentation with an expanded vision for the future of Ascension Pharmacy, one designed to align with the quadruple aim of delivering enhanced health outcomes and experience for the people we serve and those who serve, at an affordable cost, across all care settings.

Ascension Rx is also entering the specialty drug space.

Specialty medications are generally used to treat complex medical conditions, are typically costly, and require a high degree of patient education and monitoring to manage side effects. To that end, Ascension Rx has achieved URAC Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation, the highest national standard of quality, safety and consumer empowerment.

The Ascension Rx specialty pharmacy program will initially be limited to SmartHealth members in states where Ascension Rx is licensed. Those currently receiving specialty medications at non-Ascension pharmacies will be transitioned to Ascension Rx mail order services first. Then SmartHealth members receiving specialty medications across Ascension are expected to follow.

To meet demand for specialty and mail order services, Ascension Rx will leverage its national pharmacy in Southeast Michigan and build a new Ascension Rx pharmacy in Austin, Texas, slated to open next spring. Both will offer wraparound care services, such as preauthorization, medication management assistance for providers and 24/7 patient consults with clinical pharmacists.

he COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in how we operate and how we interact with each other and those we serve.

As a way to honor, inspire and lift up Ascension associates during this unprecedented situation, Mission Integration encouraged associates to share stories of how others have brought our Mission and Values alive.

Here are some of the heartfelt stories associates shared about one another.

ASCENSION ST. VINCENT’S SOUTHSIDE (FLORIDA) Shannen Walsh, Respiratory Therapist, submitted a story about Luz (Eva) Reese, Respiratory Therapist

Every day I see compassion and dedication to our patients, all patients. However, on May 6, a truly special story was brought to my attention. At Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside in Jacksonville, one of our COVID-19 patients was passing away, losing his battle to this horrible disease. His significant other was also a COVID-19 patient here at Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside who was on her way to recovery but still in isolation on our inpatient unit. The two patients were not able to physically be with each other as the one passed away. Therefore, our ICU staff, including ICU RN Carolann Potts and Eva coordinated a [video chat] between the two patients. Carolann went to the recovering patient’s room while Eva remained with the dying patient and they held the devices and provided comfort to both patients during this difficult time. This allowed the patients to spend those final moments together and

the team stayed by the patient’s side as he took his last breath. The compassion and care for both of these patients in this moment is beyond measure.

I had the pleasure of working with Cortney in the ICU COVID unit for over a month. Every Sunday she had the same patient. I saw Cortney demonstrate Ascension’s Mission daily. The statement “We are advocates for a compassionate and just society through our actions and our words” stands out to me specifically. I would hear her talk to her patient while he was unconscious, I would hear her talk to his wife multiple times a day to give her hope and ease her stress. She maintained a calm and caring demeanor even when having to give bad news. She sacrificed her time, her health, and time with family to help those patients. She did not return home for the six-plus weeks of working with COVID-19 patients so as to not infect her boyfriend. I could see how much she loved what she does and how much she cared for each of her patients and their families.

It has been a challenging and uncertain time during the COVID-19 crisis, but it has been refreshing to see Ascension’s Mission come to life in and around the hospitals and in so many of my co-workers.

They demonstrated the Value of Dedication as they readily stepped into unfamiliar roles, with unfamiliar people, and onto work shifts that were often very different than they were accustomed to. The work varied and included assisting with supply

chain, materials management, associate and patient screening, environmental services support, COVID-19 unit communication support, data abstraction, and Command Center staffing. I am grateful for all of their support and teamwork during this time.

New alliance for better health The University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System and Ascension St. Vincent’s in Birmingham have entered into a strategic alliance that will increase access to high-quality, innovative medical care through multiple outlets and health programs. The alliance will enable the two entities, which have a long history of collaboration, to further enhance patient care and address Alabama’s most challenging health issues, including health disparities, mental and behavioral health, and diabetes, with an emphasis on expanded access for poor, vulnerable and rural populations.

BALTIMORE

Grant supports transportation Ascension Saint Agnes received grant funds totaling more than $181,000 from the National Community Care Corps. The grant will support volunteer chaperones to assist family caregivers, older adults and persons with disabilities access transportation for nonemergency medical care.

Nurses pay it forward After Ascension Saint Agnes received assistance during an earlier COVID-19 surge, six nurses returned the favor by helping fellow Ascension colleagues on critical care and medical/surgical units in Texas for two weeks this past summer.

FLORIDA AND GULF COAST

Freestanding EDs open Ascension St. Vincent’s now offers two freestanding emergency departments in Jacksonville, Florida. Open 24/7, the EDs provide the same services as a hospital-based service. Locations were selected based on a data-driven analysis of where emergency services are most needed in the community.

New hospital in development Ascension St. Vincent’s will build a $150 million, 60-bed community hospital in northern St. Johns County, Florida — the fastest growing county in the state, with approximately 250,000 people but only one hospital.

Hospital receives honor Ascension St. Vincent’s Clay County in Florida was named one of the nation’s 100 top hospitals by IBM Watson.

Services open post hurricane Rebuilding after Hurricane Michael continues in the Panama City area with the opening of cardiac rehabilitation services at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay. The hospital also opened a new rehabilitation center in Panama City, while Ascension Medical Group opened a primary care office.

Hospital earns TAVR award AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village was the first hospital in the country to be recognized

by Edwards Lifesciences for completing its Edwards Benchmark™ program for the treatment of aortic stenosis patients undergoing TAVR heart valve replacement. The program is designed to align the multidisciplinary heart team on the minimalist TAVR approach and improve the patient clinical pathway.

New screening tool offered AMITA Health St. Mary’s Hospital Kankakee introduced the Invenia™ ABUS 2.0.

The screening was approved by the FDA for breast cancer screening in addition to mammography for women with dense breast tissue. The hospital was the first in the region to offer it to the community.

Hospital teams with Rx Mobile AMITA Health St. Mary’s Hospital Kankakee hosted its first Rx Mobile distribution, in partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Rx Mobile is part of the Food Bank’s Screen & Intervene program to identify chronic disease patients experiencing food insecurity and connect them with fresh produce.

Hospital earns orthopedic designation Ascension St. Vincent Hospital has been designated as a Blue Distinction® Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.

Mammograms Until Midnight When elective procedures were paused during the pandemic, many women were not able to schedule the essential imaging needed to detect signs of breast cancer. Several care sites throughout Ascension St. Vincent held a special event to promote women’s breast health — Mammograms Until Midnight. The sites extended their hours and offered evening appointments so women could work around their busy schedules and receive this important screening.

KANSAS

Restoring emergency care Ascension Via Christi Hospital Wichita committed to provide emergency services by reopening the emergency department at Sumner Community Hospital, which closed last spring, leaving residents of Wellington, Kansas, and surrounding communities without an ED. Geriatric ED accreditation earned Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa received three-year Level 3 accreditation by the American College of Emergency Physicians’ Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation program. The ED is staffed by a multidisciplinary care team that has specialized training and education in emergency and geriatric care. Four of the ED’s 14 exam rooms and all of its

common areas have been renovated to address seniors’ specialized care needs.

MICHIGAN

Emergency Department receives Lantern Award The Emergency Nurses Association recognized Ascension St. John Hospital’s Emergency Department with its Lantern Award. Since 2011, this national award has recognized emergency departments that demonstrate excellent practice and innovative performance through leadership, education, advocacy and research.

Among the 25 Lantern Award recipients this year, Ascension St. John was the only Michigan hospital and the only Ascension hospital to be recognized.

Cancer center offers T-cell therapy The Ascension Providence Cancer Center was certified as the first program in the state to offer CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapy for patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in an outpatient setting.

Symptom Management Clinic opens Ascension St. John Hospital’s Van Elslander Cancer Center opened a new Symptom Management Clinic to provide services to hematology-oncology patients requiring urgent but nonemergent evaluation, diagnosis and management of acute symptoms. The clinic provides interventions to address a patient’s acute symptoms, including diagnostic procedures and the prescribing of pain medications.

Stroke centers earn certifications Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission with zero issues. This designation is the highest level of stroke certification, earned by meeting rigorous standards for the most complex stroke cases and the ability to quickly and effectively

treat all strokes so patients have the best chance for a full recovery.

Hospital makes top list For the second consecutive year, Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City has been identified among the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the country. The hospital is one of only four Michigan hospitals on the Chartis Center for Rural Health list.

Grant helps patients connect to families Through the Community Foundation of Greater Flint Compassionate Living Fund, a $5,000 grant was awarded to the Ascension Genesys Foundation to support the purchase of tablets to facilitate video calls connecting patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and other serious illnesses with their families to receive emotional and spiritual support.

Associates celebrate milestone Ascension St. Mary’s associates celebrated a topping out ceremony that placed one of the final steel beams for the Saginaw hospital’s new emergency care center. The beam, covered with associate and physician signatures, was raised atop the structure, signaling the completion of the framework. The $17.6 million expansion will transform the facility into a modern emergency and level II trauma care center.

Surgery group joins Ascension Medical Group St. John Surgery Inc., one of the oldest surgical groups in the Tulsa area, joined Ascension Medical Group St. John. The practice includes Justin Atherton, MD; Lawrence Brotherton, MD; Tim Hepner, MD; and Ty Kirkpatrick, DO, and their teams.

Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown transforming Ascension Saint Thomas announced plans for financial investments in clinical program development and a transformative campus development at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown. The first series of developments is underway with the construction of the Ascension Saint Thomas Rehabilitation Hospital, in partnership with Kindred Healthcare, and the Ascension Saint Thomas Surgery & Critical Care Tower. $82 million vertical expansion project A 60,000-square-foot expansion to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital added three floors and 72 beds to the west patient tower of the hospital. Four additional operating suites were completed on the second floor of the hospital.

Pediatric heart transplant program The Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease at Dell Children’s Medical Center, in partnership with UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of Dell Medical School at The University of Texas in Austin, has launched The Heart Failure, VAD, and Transplant Program at Dell Children’s. The service is the only program in Central Texas providing complete multidisciplinary heart care and transplants for infants, adolescents and children into adulthood.

Robotic-assisted tool available Ascension Providence was the first hospital in Central Texas to introduce a new robotic tool to diagnose and treat lung cancer earlier than previously possible. The Ion Endoluminal System helps improve accuracy and precision

and offers a less invasive, high-tech technique to biopsy lung tissue for lung cancer or other diseases.

Mobile lab on the go Ascension Seton established its first mobile lab service. Lab technicians, equipped with personal protective equipment, travel via van to a patient’s home to provide the convenient service.

Sleep lab opens The Dell Children’s Sleep Lab unveiled a newly renovated, 2,885-square-foot sleep lab with expanded services. The lab is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pediatric sleep disorders for children of all ages, newborns through age 18.

Dell Children’s expands pediatric care Dell Children’s plans to build a new children’s hospital and medical office building in North Austin. The new hospital, along with planned expansions at Dell Children’s Medical Center and the Dell Children’s Specialty Pavilion, is part of a comprehensive, ongoing plan to continue expanding pediatric care in Central Texas over the next five years and beyond.

Opening of the 33,000-square-foot facility is slated for late 2021.

Strengthening diabetes care Ascension Wisconsin and Sharecare Diabetes Solution have formed a collaboration to further improve inpatient care and outcomes by utilizing evidence-based protocols and practices in addition to an outpatient diabetes support program.

the pandemic crisis. Alianza’s work is focused on long-term development, not humanitarian aid, but given the circumstances, the organization decided to work with leaders in the communities it serves to identify families most in need and see how to secure basic food and supplies as interim support.

Ascension Global Mission provided funding for this humanitarian effort, which has benefited nearly 1,900 families and 11,000 people. Alianza also provided critical supplies for five health outposts that serve approximately 16,000 people.

For many community leaders, this was the first time they were given the chance to have an active leadership role in the request and delivery of aid (from the selection of families most in need to the delivery of goods to the creation of reports), taking full responsibility for the process. For Alianza, this was a unique opportunity to continue to support communities to be agents of their own destiny.

by Vohra Wound Physicians as a Center of Excellence for Wound Management.

Only 10% of Vohra’s skilled nursing facility partners have qualified for this annual certification. The clinical team was honored for its ability to care for residents with chronic and complex wounds using the latest in specialized wound management. Its multidisciplinary approach enhances wound healing rates and reduces the need to send residents to wound care centers or hospitals.

New investments Ascension Ventures recently closed three new investments: AristaMD is a platform for physician-to-physician e-consults that improves patient satisfaction, care and cost. Compassus provides nationwide hospice, palliative care and home health services. Truvic Medical is developing a platform to treat peripheral vascular disease. Ascension Ventures also closed follow-on investments in several portfolio companies, including Bardy Diagnostics, Cardionomic, Cedar Gate Technologies, EBR Systems, Renovia and Syapse.

Leader appointments Baligh Yehia, MD, MPP, FACP, was named Senior Vice President, Ascension, and President, Ascension Medical Group.

Dr. Yehia joined AMG in July 2018 to serve as Chief Medical Officer. He has worked to develop Ascension’s care model portfolio and virtual care strategy, which enhances the delivery of personalized care to patients and expands practice opportunities for clinicians.

Thomas Graf, MD, FAAFP, transitioned to a new role: Senior Vice President, Ascension, and Chief Population Health & Value Based Care Officer. In this role Dr. Graf leads population health and advances performance on value-based care.

Tania Elliott, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI, was named Chief Medical Officer, Virtual Care, Clinical & Network Services. Dr. Elliott leads virtual care services, including advancing the adoption of virtual care across the continuum in collaboration with our Ministry Markets and Digital teams.

COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS

Center fills void during pandemic While many substance abuse treatment programs in New Orleans have been unable to accept new patients during the pandemic, DePaul Community Health Centers is serving both new and current patients. The ministry offers telehealth appointments for all patients who seek assistance with substance abuse, including medication management and group therapy for both addiction and mental health. Patients also have access to basic medical and dental care.

Associates adapt to continue services When news of an impending citywide shutdown this summer reached the five-person Social Services team at Ascension DePaul Services of San Antonio, Texas, the associates quickly adapted programs to meet CDC and local government guidelines to ensure that services could continue without interruption for vulnerable members of the community hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic. The center’s programs provide emergency food boxes, utility bill assistance and “Diaper Kits” full of essential baby items to help keep families from falling further into poverty. The team also distributes food to more than 200 hungry seniors twice a month, along with daily emergency food boxes to individuals who are struggling to feed their families.

Internships go virtual The Resource Group hosted 25 interns through a virtual platform. While unconventional, the summer intern class made the most of the experience by actively participating in and contributing to a multitude of COVID-19-related relief efforts, supply chain process improvement initiatives and a variety of other ad-hoc support projects.

Elizabeth Kamhieh Director of Provider Recruitment, Ascension Medical Group

Elizabeth Kamhieh had just completed a meeting at a health ministry when she noticed a sign with the name of a physician she had recruited six years earlier.

“He had been referred to me. He was in his first position with another employer and realized it was not a fit for him,” said Elizabeth, Director of Provider Recruitment, Ascension Medical Group. “He and I had focused heavily on his understanding of professional relationships when we were exploring positions. As I saw his name again, seeing that he had been there six years, it really cemented with me the importance of relationships.”

Aware of what brings meaning and happiness to the workplace, Elizabeth prioritizes relationship-building over task management.

“Understanding that I am motivated by relationships, I examine my day and I focus on strengthening those relationships,” she said.

Ascension’s deep commitment to our Mission and Values is also central to her approach to recruitment.

The group was engaged in a webinar with Joseph R. Impicciche, JD, MHA, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ascension, when critical operational decisions had to be made in response to COVID-19.

“Without hesitation, he knew he had to take care of associates first,” she said. “That was a big ‘aha! moment’ for me, watching our leaders not stray from our core Values even facing extreme, unknown circumstances.

“My participation in ASPIRE has only solidified the reasons I stay with Ascension. It’s challenging me to develop critical reflection practices and provide leadership development through tangible experiences with senior executives.”
