2024 Drums Along the Rockies Program

Page 1

Welcome to Drums Along the Rockies, Colorado’s premier marching music event. Ascend Performing Arts, home of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, is pleased to again be sponsoring this unique event. As we move forward into our 60th year of presenting the very best in world class outdoor musical exhibition, we are so pleased you have joined us here at beautiful Canvas Stadium on the CSU campus for another great evening of pulsepounding beats, soaring melodies and heart-stopping visual displays.

Every summer, young performers from across the globe come together with one purpose—to become part of the incredible experience that is drum corps. Hundreds of hours of rehearsal will take place before these performers ever see an audience. With every corps striving to become the best of the best, competition is fierce right out of the gate. These corps are involved in the world of competitive drum and bugle corps sanctioned by Drum Corps International (DCI). These members, along with the staffs that coach and lead them, have put their hearts, bodies and souls into the performances you’re about to see. Whether you’re a seasoned drum corps veteran or completely new to the activity, you will be blown away by what these young performers can accomplish. For these performers-no matter what their dream--being part of a DCI drum corps can help them achieve it, while at the same time providing them with one of the most intense and rewarding performing arts educations experiences in the world. The skills and lessons they learn while on the road with their chosen corps will build a strong personal and educational foundation which will benefit them the rest of their life.

Thank you for coming tonight and supporting these amazing performers on their incredible journey towards Drum Corps International’s World Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana this August. What you’re about to see is some of the most entertaining and finest youth activities in the world, so sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

PRE SHOW INFORMATION

The pre-show entertainment will be provided by several groups this year. Kicking off the festivities, participants who attend our BKXperience “Perform” clinic will be invited on the field to perform. The BKX Perform clinic is an excellent opportunity for brass, woodwinds, percussion, guard and drum majors to learn from some of the best staff in the world and we’re pleased to show off their hard work during the pre show entertainment.

The National Anthem will be performed tonight by combined members of the Colorado Brass and Rocky Mountain Brassworks. The Colorado Brass play in concert in the Denver area and travel each year to the North American Brass Band Association contest as well as other contests. The Rocky Mountain Brassworks is Colorado’s oldest British Style Brass Band. They play several concerts each year as well as many concerts at schools and various workshops.

Both bands were formed to promote the British Style Brass Band tradition to educate and inspire young musicians. The conductor for today’s show will be the former director of the Rocky Mountain Brassworks, Doug Harris. Doug is a retired music teacher with 34 years under his belt, having taught elementary and high school band, finishing his career at Lakewood High School.

Jack R Treffer Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Alexis Brunney, a 21-year-old from Boulder, Colorado, stands out in the drum corps world as a dedicated member of the Blue Knights (BK), where she serves as Drum Major in her second year (‘23 and ‘24 seasons). Originally drawn to BK after feeling disheartened by other music programs, Alexis found a supportive community that solidified her decision to join.

Ascend Performing Arts, home of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, is honored to have been chosen to manage the Jack R. Treffer Memorial Scholarship.

Drum corps was important to Jack so his family decided that the best way to honor him was to give back to the activity that he loved so much. A memorial scholarship fund was started with the intent that each year a Drum Major or a member in financial need with the Blue Knights receives scholarship assistance. The Blue Knights were chosen because they are the only remaining member of the Great Plains Drum and Bugle Corps Association and a shining example of the drum corps activity.

Jack joined the Admirals Drum and Bugle Corps as a snare drummer and eventually earned the position of Drum Major. In 1970 Jack and some of the other former Senior Corps members started the Young Admirals Junior Drum and Bugle Corps. They were a part of the Great Plains Drum and Bugle Corps Association along with the likes of Blue Knights, Silver Sabers, Sky Riders, and Argonne Rebels. Jack was a co-director, drill writer, and instructor. Unfortunately the Young Admirals folded in 1982 but Jack’s love for the activity never stopped. The Treffer family often spent their summers traveling to drum corps shows together.

The music and marching arts also rubbed off on Jack and Florence’s grandchildren. Their grandsons, Josh and Adam and granddaughters Christina, who marched with the Blue Knights, and Jessica are all involved with music.

The Jack Treffer Scholarship has been crucial for Alexis, enabling her to pursue her dream of being a Drum Major while navigating financial obstacles. In this role, she conducts rehearsals, fosters community spirit, and advocates for member support. Alexis plans to leverage her leadership experience in environmental justice beyond her marching years, despite not pursuing a music career.

Her involvement with BK has been transformative, underscored by memorable moments like singing the corps song after their 2023 finals run. Alexis credits her growth to her Drum Major team and mentor Caleb Florence, emphasizing the community’s impact in fostering a sense of belonging and family.

Alexis encourages future BK members to embrace their uniqueness, highlighting that diversity enhances the corps’ greatness. Her journey with the Blue Knights, supported by the Jack Treffer Scholarship, embodies dedication, leadership, and community spirit within the drum corps tradition.

DCI Judging “By the

DCI Judging “By the Numbers”

THE PROCESS of selecting a “winner” from among the world’s most elite and exclusive marching music ensembles is not an easy task. Just ask any of the more than 120 highly-qualified professionals who comprise the DCI judging team in a given season. What might seem obvious on the surface may be masked by the complexity of Drum Corps International’s judging system which takes into account an entire process combining the creativity of a corps’ program and the outstanding performers who bring the show to life. Drum corps competition demands excellence from performers and adjudicators alike. With the long-held philosophy that any corps can win a show on any given night, the judges’ training and experience ensure that competitive decisions are based on the performances they observe and not on a corps’ reputation or past performances.

Individual judges evaluate three separate visual captions and three separate music captions: Visual Analysis, Visual Proficiency, Color Guard, Music Analysis, Brass, and Percussion. In addition, two judges cover General Effect, one with a Visual background, the other with expertise in Music. • Fans should note that DCI member corps create the judging system. Instructors and designers meet at regular intervals to present their views about how the system should be revised, interpreted, and refined. This is the origin of the current adjudication philosophy. • The approach is further developed and delivered as a curriculum to the judges, who in turn put the system into practice during the competitive season. • While judges make individual determinations of placement and score, they do so with a significant amount of knowledge about how the system works and with the support of various tools to help make an informed and informative judgment.

Gene Herring Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Gene Herring Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of Gene “Geno” Herring, a longtime DCI volunteer and former corps director, by Gene’s son J.P. and his wife Joan.

Gene, or “Geno” as he was best known, started in the drum corps activity in 1979 when his son J.P. marched with the Knights of Geneseo. Gene started off as a cook and a general “do it all” volunteer, eventually becoming the Director of the corps. After J.P. aged out, Gene continued to volunteer for Drum Corps Midwest, Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International.

Based on the recollections of people who worked closely with Gene Herring, he was remembered as a remarkable volunteer whose first priority was to provide for the needs of every corps member. They saw him as a calming and loving force at events. It was this fondness for the corps members that guided J.P. and Joan to establish this memorial scholarship to support members of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps. Recipients of this honor demonstrate a passion for the activity, display leadership skills and exhibit an overall concern for the people around them.

Anthony Samaniego, a dedicated 20-year-old from El Paso, Texas, has made significant strides in the drum corps community as a member of the Blue Knights.

Currently in his second year with BK, Anthony plays trumpet, which has bolstered his musical and professional development. His passion for BK was ignited upon discovering DCI and the corps’ distinctive sound. The Gene Herring Scholarship has been pivotal, enabling Anthony to march with BK and manage college expenses. He emphasizes the scholarship’s crucial role in overcoming financial barriers common in DCI participation. Anthony has contributed to BK by fostering a culture of calmness and accountability, describing this season as one of the corps’ best technically and culturally.

His time with BK has cultivated punctuality and professionalism, skills he intends to apply in his pursuit of a career in music and potential role on the DCI staff post-aging out. Mentored by influential educators like Thomas Kober and Dr. Nancy Taylor, Anthony has grown significantly as a musician. He underscores the supportive DCI community and advocates for scholarships to reduce financial obstacles for aspiring musicians. Anthony’s journey with the Blue Knights embodies dedication and passion, reflecting the transformative power of drum corps in shaping young musicians’ lives and careers.

Preserve the experience...

The Blue Knights were founded in 1958 and became Ascend Performing Arts in 2010. The new name, Ascend Performing Arts was established as the umbrella organization for its ensembles, events, and educational outreach programs. The name change was made to more accurately express the scope and input of the organization, better positioning it for future growth.

2018 marked the organization’s 60 th year and the 1958 Legacy Roundtable was launched to provide a tool for long-term sustainability. The Ascend Performing Arts Endowment Fund was established by the following Charter Members:

extraordinaire, who did not have anyone who marched with the Blue Knights but considered the Blue Knights their family, left a bequest to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization.

Florence Treffer and her family established the Jack R. Treffer Memorial Scholarship in 2017 to memorialize their late husband, father, and brother. The request was to invest the scholar ship fund in a fund to honor Drum Majors on a perpetual basis. Their request prompted action from the Ascend Board of Directors to establish the Legacy Roundtable.

J.P. and Joan Herring (left) established the Gene Herring Memorial Scholarship, renamed the Gene Herring Endowed Scholarship in 2006 to fund a scholarship memorializing J.P.’s father, Gene Herring. The scholarship supports a member and family who support volunteerism.

2019 Legacy Partners

Anonymous established the Renaissance Scholarships, renamed Renaissance Endowed Scholarships. Renaissance, in this instance, refers to many talents and for this scholarship refers to members who marched in ensembles in the winter and summer seasons, leaving little or no time for employment in order to raise funds. This anonymous donor established this scholarship to remove the pressure to pay fees and instead give members the time to prepare for the seasons’ shows.

KC Michel

KC Michel’s story with the Blue Knights began in the 1970s, a time when his dedication would leave a lasting impact on the organization. It all started in 1977, at the age of 12, when a Drum Corps International Prelims competition in Boulder, CO, sparked a lifelong passion for marching arts. He joined the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps as a trumpet player the following year in 1978. While the drum corps didn’t compete that season, they participated in parades, standstill performances, and other community events, an experience that instilled in him the “old school” discipline that shaped him into the successful instructor he’d become. He also went on to join as a member of the Saturday Knight Blues winter guard in 1982.

After performing with other drum corps for seven years, KC transitioned into instructing in the late 1980s, working with the Phantom Regiment, Madison Scouts and Sky Ryders. These experiences culminated in his return to the Blue Knights as Color Guard Caption Head from 1992 to 1994, followed by Visual Caption Head in 1994. During this period, the Blue Knights achieved three consecutive Top-12 finishes at DCI Finals, a testament to his dedication and the strong connection he forged with the color guard members.

KC’s influence extends far beyond the Blue Knights. From 1986 to 1991, he taught at Broomfield High School, leading them to Colorado state championships in 1986 and 1990. His tenure at Pomona High School (19871994, 2004-2005) yielded Winter Guard International (WGI) Scholastic Open Class Championships. His talents as a production designer were sought after by Monarch, Legacy, Cherry Creek, Littleton, and Centaurus High Schools. He has also served as a judge for the Colorado Bandmasters Association (CBA) and the Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association (RMGCA) on numerous occasions.

KC’s impact on the marching arts community extends nationwide. As Color Guard Director at Westfield High School in Houston, Texas (1995-2002, 2008-2014), he guided them to 10 Texas state winter guard titles, two marching band state titles, and numerous Bands of America regional titles.

For over 45 years, KC has carried the lessons learned as a Blue Knight. He has applied his dedication not only with the Blue Knights but also with Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association, Bands of America, Drum Corps International, and Winter Guard International, in Colorado and across the United States. As an active alumnus, he continues to be a leader, constantly strengthening the community through his work with music educators and students.

Darrell Griffin

Darrell Griffin’s journey with Drum Corps International began in 2011 when his son, John, joined the Blue Knights. A supportive parent, Darrell, along with his wife Deb, readily volunteered their time. That summer, Darrell went above and beyond, driving, cooking, and becoming the unofficial “cleanup guy” for the entire tour. This hands-on experience opened his eyes to the intricate workings that make the activity thrive for both volunteers and members.

Determined to make a lasting impact, Darrell took on the Volunteer Coordinator role. He was also invited to join the Ascend Performing Arts Board of Directors. Recognizing the need for a deeper understanding of the nonprofit world, Darrell tackled this new role head-on. He actively sought knowledge through conferences, research, and open communication. This dedication translated into strong, steady leadership during Ascend’s financial hurdles through the years. Darrell encouraged the Board to consider decisions within the broader context of the non-profit landscape. He served two terms as Treasurer, followed by two years as Board Chair. Under his guidance, the Board developed long-term policies promoting financial stability. This included a renewed strategic plan and the establishment of an Endowment Program.

Darrell’s commitment to the Blue Knights extends beyond financial well-being. Throughout his term as Board Chair, he consistently attended Drum Corps International Finals, paying his own way. This dedication underscores his belief in supporting the very heart of Ascend – its people.

Darrell’s passion for Ascend’s mission is undeniable. His dedication encompasses staff, volunteers, parents, and most importantly, ensuring all efforts prioritize the well-being of Ascend’s members across all ensembles.

Scott Factor

Scott Factor’s 13-year journey with Ascend Performing Arts began in 2011 when his son, Alex, joined the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. Initially lured by the promise of a fun experience watching his son perform on tour, Scott volunteered as a cook’s helper or driver. Although he found the long hours and hot weather was not his forte, it sparked a different kind of passion for the organization serving on the Ascend Performing Arts Board of Directors.

During his time on the Ascend Board, Scott significantly contributed to Ascend Performing Arts in two ways: Board service and volunteer leadership. He served for six years as a voting member on the Board of Directors, including a term as Vice Chair. Scott continues today as an Advisory Member (nonvoting), chairing the crucial Governance Committee.

Scott’s leadership on the Governance Committee was instrumental. He and his committee members dedicated countless hours to refining and adopting the Board’s by-laws, policies, and procedures. Scott recommended a formal process for selecting and approving new Board members, ensuring a smooth onboarding experience.

Beyond boardroom contributions, Scott’s generosity extended to providing a serene retreat location for the annual Board Retreat and Blue Knights design team meetings for the past six years. This tranquil setting, away from the city’s bustle, fostered a productive environment for strategic planning and collaboration.

Scott’s dedication, leadership, and sound judgment have been invaluable assets to the Ascend Performing Arts Board of Directors and the organization as a whole.

Mary Kay Eichelberger

Mary Kay Eichelberger’s passion for the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps spanned a decade of volunteer service, from 1995 to 2004. Her involvement began when her sons, Joel (1995-1999) and Jon (19952000), and later her daughter Katy (1998-2003), marched with the Blue Knights.

For those ten years, Mary Kay played a vital role in the Blue Knights’ success by managing the food program for audition camps and summer tours. These tours covered over 10,000 miles with demanding performances, requiring a well-balanced, nutritious diet for peak performance. Mary Kay ensured each member received nearly 4,000 calories daily. Her team provided 150 meals four times a day for over 70 days, keeping the Blue Knights fueled and focused throughout the tour.

Her responsibilities were vast. She developed menus for 150 people, ordered and picked up groceries, and rallied volunteers to cook and prepare meals. She also compiled lists of volunteers to help with loading, cleaning, and prepping the kitchen truck for the national tour. While she enlisted others, Mary Kay herself participated in the long, hot summer tours, working alongside the team she inspired.

Mary Kay’s dedication extended beyond meals. She volunteered countless hours with uniform fittings and alterations, ensuring the Blue Knights looked their best. During the off-season, she committed four days a week to volunteering at the Blue Knights Bingo Hall, a critical revenue source for the organization.

Her leadership extended to the Blue Knights Booster Club, serving as its Booster President. She led monthly meetings for parents, past parents, alumni, and anyone interested in supporting the Blue Knights. Her unwavering optimism and dedication were an inspiration to all involved.

Mary Kay’s ten years of service to the Blue Knights were a testament to her unwavering dedication and passion for the organization. Her contributions ensured the well-being of the members, the smooth operation of tours, and the financial strength of the Blue Knights.

Organized in 1993 with just 33 students, Pacific Crest has grown steadily since its founding. The corps first competed out of the state of California in 2000, and earned a Semifinals berth in its very first trip to the DCI World Championships in 2003. Pacific Crest has found its success over the years focusing on its impact in Southern California, with a vast majority of the corps' students coming from its home region.

ASCEND HONOR ROLL DONORS

Since its inception in 1958 as a drum and bugle corps, the Blue Knights has developed into a multi-faceted youth performing arts organization which serves thousands each year. Performing arts ensembles, educational outreach, and multiple performance events all speak to an organization that has evolved through time, meeting the needs of the Blue Knights and the community it serves.

In 2010, after an exhaustive rebranding process, the Board of Directors announced Ascend Performing Arts as the name of their parent organization of the Blue Knights and associated education and events. The name change was made to express the scope and impact of the organization more accurately, better positioning it for future growth and funding.

Ascend Performing Arts strives to promote and support the performing arts in the Rocky Mountain region. The organization partners with Colorado music education and other performing arts organizations to benefit youth interested in the performing arts. Ascend’s mission promotes four areas of focus called our 4 E’s: Education, Ensembles, Events and Entertainment.

Thank you to all our donors who have supported Ascend through the following:

Friends of Blue Knights: Friends was established in 1998 to help the organization with general operating costs.

Ascend Sustaining Members: Ascend’s monthly recurring donors.

Colorado Gives Day: State-wide 24 hour online fundraiser to “Give where you live..” sponsored by Community First Foundation and First Bank on the second Tuesday in December.

Rocky Mountain Rivalry: A weeklong fundraiser in July, competing against the Troopers and Mandarin Drum Corps, to offset the cost of summer tour for the drum corps.

Online 50/50 Raffle: A fundraiser where the purchaser of the winning ticket wins 50% of the tickets sold.

Facebook/Meta Fundraisers: Donations set up by individuals for birthdays or to help Ascend Fundraising.

Scholarships:

Memorial scholarships set up for Daniel J. Burke, Keith Nygaard, Del and Dinah Owens. Alumni Scholarships sponsored by the Alumni Association Jeff Queen Snare Scholarship: set up through recurring donations by alumni Jeff Queen

Celebrating 15 years in 2024, Genesis got its start through combined efforts of its founding members and the schools in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Now based in Austin, the corps focuses on giving members the chance to interact with Texas communities, enrich their musical and physical educations, and to perform at the peak of their potential. A three-time Open Class World Championship bronze medalist, 2017 marked the corps’ first year competing in DCI’s World Class division.
