2023 Drums Along the Rockies Program

Page 1

Welcome to Drums Along the Rockies, Colorado’s premier marching music event. Ascend Performing Arts, home of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, is pleased to again be sponsoring this unique event. As we move forward into our 59th year of presenting the very best in world class outdoormusical exhibition, we are so pleased you have joined us here at beautiful Canvas Stadium on the CSU campus for another great evening of pulsepounding beats, soaring melodies and heart-stopping visual displays.

Every summer, young performers from across the globe come together with one purpose—to become part of the incredible experience that is drum corps. Hundreds of hours of rehearsal will take place before these performers ever see an audience. With every corps striving to become the best of the best, competition is fierce right out of the gate. These corps are involved in the world of competitive drum and bugle corps sanctioned by Drum Corps International (DCI). These members, along with the staffs that coach and lead them, have put their hearts, bodies and souls into the performances you’re about to see. Whether you’re a seasoned drum corps veteran or completely new to the activity, you will be blown away by what these young performers can accomplish. For these performers-no matter what their dream--being part of a DCI drum corps can help them achieve it, while at the same time providing them with one of the most intense and rewarding performing arts educations experiences in the world. The skills and lessons they learn while on the road with their chosen corps will build a strong personal and educational foundation which will benefit them the rest of their life.

Thank you for coming tonight and supporting these amazing performers on their incredible journey towards Drum Corps International’s World Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana this August. What you’re about to see is some of the most entertaining and finest youth activities in the world, so sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Lynn and George Lindstrom

2023 Volunteer of the Year Award

The Lindstroms were the coordinators for Ascend Events for over 30 years. They planned and managed Ascend’s successful Drums Along the Rockies in Colorado, Corps Encore in Utah, and The Friendship Cup, Ascend’s Front Range series of scholastic marching band competitions. George served as Blue Knights Executive Director in 1984 and served the maximum years allowed on the Ascend Board of Directors. For all these events, they successfully amassed a loyal alliance of volunteers who served with them for years. This Memorial Recognition Award was established to carry on their legacy of volunteerism.

Our 2023 recipients are Domani Barkley and Susan Harkness

Domani Barkley is well known for her photographs on Blue Knights social media and Ascend publications. Domani became involved with photographing the Drum Corps when her son Matthew was marching with the corps from 2011 to 2014.

After Matthew left, Domani continued photographing the corps and befriended many members. Beginning in 2015 she paid for and produced “Goodie Bags” and renamed “Christmas in June” bags. The bags included various items for each member.

Domani works with the Development Director soliciting inkind donations to assist the Food Program with donations of chicken, meat, fruit, bagels, energy drinks or in one instance, tables of dessert! She also brings boxes of doughnuts on camp weekends for the enjoyment of staff and volunteers.

Since 2015, Domani has provided our age outs with the group photograph on their age out plaque. She cares for members, staff and volunteers as family and is fondly known by members as “Mama Barkley”. Thank you for your years of dedication!

Susan Harkness has been a dedicated volunteer with Ascend Performing Arts since the Spring of 2018, showcasing her remarkable versatility. One of her notable contributions was establishing the sewing team responsible for tailoring our corps members’ uniforms and ensuring their cleanliness. Not only skilled with a needle and thread, Susan has also proven her culinary prowess by preparing delicious meals and assisting in feeding the corps. She has become an indispensable member of our merchandise team, adept at heat pressing clothing, sewing flags, and even creating charming Blue Knights gnomes. Susan’s commitment extends beyond these tasks, as she fearlessly tackles various hands-on assignments, including prop painting, cabinet staining, and warehouse cleaning.

However, above all else, Susan’s true passion lies in witnessing the growth of the kids involved in the Blue Knights. She finds immense joy in seeing them progress from attending camps to marching on the field. Susan, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for your unwavering dedication and hard work. Without your invaluable contributions, we simply could not accomplish all that we do.

SHOW SCHEDULE

PRE SHOW INFORMATION

The pre-show entertainment will be provided by several groups this year. Returning to the pre-show for the first time on the since 2018, participants who attend our BKXperience “Perform” clinic will be invited on the field to perform. The BKX Perform clinic is an excellent opportunity for brass, woodwinds, percussion, guard and drum majors to learn from some of the best staff in the world and we’re pleased to show off their hard work during the pre show entertainment. This year, our clinic participants will be joined on the field by two groups--a combined brass band ensemble and a representitive from the Colorado HIKE choir.

The National Anthem will be performed tonight by combined members of the Colorado Brass and Rocky Mountain Brassworks. The Colorado Brass play in concert in the Denver area and travel each year to the North American Brass Band Association contest as well as other contests. The Rocky Mountain Brassworks is Colorado’s oldest British Style Brass Band. They play several concerts each year as well as many concerts at schools and various workshops.

Both bands were formed to promote the British Style Brass Band tradition to educate and inspire young musicians. The conductor for today’s show will be the former director of the Rocky Mountain Brassworks, Doug Harris. Doug is a retired music teacher with 34 years under his belt, having taught elementary and high school band, finishing his career at Lakewood High School.

Also joining our clinic participants will be Chloe Flynn representing the members of the Colorado HIKE Choir, who will sign the National Anthem. HIKE stands for Hearing Improvement Kids Endowment. The choir is made up of girls from various Job’s Daughters Bethels and range in age from 10 to 20, but some continue past that age through devotion to the cause. They perform at various events to raise money for hearing devices for children, including performing at a Christmas party for Children’s Hospital patients in early December. They get an opportunity to learn sign language, volunteer time to a charitable cause, and witness the joy brought to families in need. They have the opportunity to personally meet and perform for the families in need and understand how important their work is to others. Several members have chosen to follow their lessons into careers which help the hearing impaired.

Boston Crusaders was founded in 1940 as the Most Precious Blood Crusaders. Separating from the church parish that sponsored the group in its early years, the corps became the Hyde Park Crusaders and later the Boston Crusaders as it established itself as a national powerhouse. A charter member of Drum Corps International in the 1970s, it would not be until 1999 that Boston skyrocketed into the DCI World Championship Finals. The corps has retained its spot among DCI’s elite Top 12 ever since.

THE 2023 DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL TOUR

Jack R Treffer Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Ascend Performing Arts, home of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, is honored to have been chosen to manage the Jack R. Treffer Memorial Scholarship.

Drum corps was important to Jack so his family decided that the best way to honor him was to give back to the activity that he loved so much. A memorial scholarship fund was started with the intent that each year a Drum Major or a member in financial need with the Blue Knights receives scholarship assistance. The Blue Knights were chosen because they are the only remaining member of the Great Plains Drum and Bugle Corps Association and a shining example of the drum corps activity.

Jack joined the Admirals Drum and Bugle Corps as a snare drummer and eventually earned the position of Drum Major. In 1970 Jack and some of the other former Senior Corps members started the Young Admirals Junior Drum and Bugle Corps. They were a part of the Great Plains Drum and Bugle Corps Association along with the likes of Blue Knights, Silver Sabers, Sky Riders, and Argonne Rebels. Jack was a co-director, drill writer, and instructor. Unfortunately the Young Admirals folded in 1982 but Jack’s love for the activity never stopped. The Treffer family often spent their summers traveling to drum corps shows together.

The music and marching arts also rubbed off on Jack and Florence’s grandchildren. Their grandsons, Josh and Adam and granddaughters Christina, who marched with the Blue Knights, and Jessica are all involved with music.

The 2023 Recipient of this scholarship is Laynie Metsker. Laynie is the oldest of 5 and music has always been an intregal part of her life. She has studied bassoon for eight years and is also proficient with the piano alto saxophone, and voice.

Laynie is enrolled at the University of Colorado in Boulder pursuing two degrees for both music education and bassoon performance. She performs regularly with the CU Symphonic Band, and occasionally with the CU Philharmonic Orchestra. She also serves as a squad leader for the CU Golden Marching Band.

Laynie is in her second year as Drum Major for the Blue Knights, having started in 2022. She describes her experience as …” nothing short of life changing.” She has learned invaluable lessons about leadership, community, communicating effectively and efficiently, problem solving on the fly, prioritizing the success and well-being of others, and that failure and success depends on everyone and not just one person.

Laynie’s goal in life is to be a high school band director while remaining active as a bassoonist. Her hobbies include drawing, reading, board games, Pilates, hiking and spending time outdoors.

DCI Judging “By the Numbers”

DCI Judging “By the Numbers”

THE PROCESS of selecting a “winner” from among the world’s most elite and exclusive marching music ensembles is not an easy task. Just ask any of the more than 120 highly-qualified professionals who comprise the DCI judging team in a given season. What might seem obvious on the surface may be masked by the complexity of Drum Corps International’s judging system which takes into account an entire process combining the creativity of a corps’ program and the outstanding performers who bring the show to life.

Drum corps competition demands excellence from performers and adjudicators alike. With the long-held philosophy that any corps can win a show on any given night, the judges’ training and experience ensure that competitive decisions are based on the performances they observe and not on a corps’ reputation or past performances.

Individual judges evaluate three separate visual captions and three separate music captions: Visual Analysis, Visual Proficiency, Color Guard, Music Analysis, Brass, and Percussion. In addition, two judges cover General Effect, one with a Visual background, the other with expertise in Music. • Fans should note that DCI member corps create the judging system. Instructors and designers meet at regular intervals to present their views about how the system should be revised, interpreted, and refined. This is the origin of the current adjudication philosophy. • The approach is further developed and delivered as a curriculum to the judges, who in turn put the system into practice during the competitive season. • While judges make individual determinations of placement and score, they do so with a significant amount of knowledge about how the system works and with the support of various tools to help make an informed and informative judgment.

Gene Herring Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Gene Herring Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of Gene “Geno” Herring, a longtime DCI volunteer and former corps director, by Gene’s son J.P. and his wife Joan.

Gene, or “Geno” as he was best known, started in the drum corps activity in 1979 when his son J.P. marched with the Knights of Geneseo. Gene started off as a cook and a general “do it all” volunteer, eventually becoming the Director of the corps. After J.P. aged out, Gene continued to volunteer for Drum Corps Midwest, Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International.

Based on the recollections of people who worked closely with Gene Herring, he was remembered as a remarkable volunteer whose first priority was to provide for the needs of every corps member. They saw him as a calming and loving force at events. It was this fondness for the corps members that guided J.P. and Joan to establish this memorial scholarship to support members of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps. Recipients of this honor demonstrate a passion for the activity, display leadership skills and exhibit an overall concern for the people around them.

The 2023 recipient of the Gene Herring Scholarship is Caroline Norman. Caroline is a second year color guard veteran and will be aging out this year.

Caroline’s early musical experience began in 2012 playing the flute in a concert band and with her High School Wind Ensemble.

Caroline’s love for the color guard activity began in 2016, with her high school marching band and her first year marching with an Independent Color Guard, ICT Independent. The three years she performed with ICT at World Championships for Winter Guard International were inspirational. She was “shocked by the talent, confidence and skills of all the participants. It was inspiring to see their passion and commitment to the sport. They’re what drove me to improve.”

Her first year with the Blue Knights challenged her as a performer. She was an alternate due to COVID-19 and her late arrival for the season. “I didn’t let that get to me, however. I pushed myself and caught up. I shadowed a member for the first part of tour and earned a full spot performing the whole show. My greatest accomplishment was pushing through the long, hot, exhausting days to flourish into a better version of myself. I became more confident in my follow through and stopped questioning if I belonged.” For the 2023 season she was determined ….”to give it my everything and more”.

Caroline is a licensed hair stylist. She is also a color guard instructor in Valley Center, Kansas. Her goal is to improve her skill levels in color guard and to return to her high school as a Color Guard instructor to inspire and encourage her students “to put themselves out there without fear to become the best they can realize.”

Preserve the experience...

The Blue Knights were founded in 1958 and became Ascend Performing Arts in 2010. The new name, Ascend Performing Arts was established as the umbrella organization for its ensembles, events, and educational outreach programs. The name change was made to more accurately express the scope and input of the organization, better positioning it for future growth.

2018 marked the organization’s 60 th year and the 1958 Legacy Roundtable was launched to provide a tool for long-term sustainability. The Ascend Performing Arts Endowment Fund was established by the following Charter Members:

extraordinaire, who did not have anyone who marched with the Blue Knights but considered the Blue Knights their family, left a bequest to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization.

Fred and Fae Tourtel, founders of the Blue Knights left a bequest to fulfill Fae’s dream for a building to house the Blue Knights.

Florence Treffer and her family established the Jack R. Treffer Memorial Scholarship in 2017 to memorialize their late husband, father, and brother. The request was to invest the scholar ship fund in a fund to honor Drum Majors on a perpetual basis. Their request prompted action from the Ascend Board of Directors to establish the Legacy Roundtable.

2019 Legacy Partners

J.P. and Joan Herring (left) established the Gene Herring Memorial Scholarship, renamed the Gene Herring Endowed Scholarship in 2006 to fund a scholarship memorializing J.P.’s father, Gene Herring. The scholarship supports a member and family who support volunteerism.

Crea

Anonymous established the Renaissance Scholarships, renamed Renaissance Endowed Scholarships. Renaissance, in this instance, refers to many talents and for this scholarship refers to members who marched in ensembles in the winter and summer seasons, leaving little or no time for employment in order to raise funds. This anonymous donor established this scholarship to remove the pressure to pay fees and instead give members the time to prepare for the seasons’ shows.

What started as a locally-based operation, quickly grew into an international sensation after the Troopers pioneered the touring drum corps model, making the activity accessible to young people across the country and beyond. Ever building upon their rich and innovative history, the corps has established itself as a dominant force in the annals of history and remains an ever present fan favorite throughout the activity.

all a Doug Kelley

Doug Kelley’s decades-long involvement with the Blue Knights reaches back to the early 1980’s where few alumni have had the year-afteryear impact he had. After graduating from Northglenn High School, Doug joined the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps as the captain of the bass drum line in the winter of 1980. He marched for three years from 1981 through 1983. Due to his past bus driving experience, Doug drove the color guard bus during the 1982 and 1983 seasons. To date, he is the only “member bus driver” in the history of the Blue Knights!

After his age-out season, Doug went on to support the Blue Knights and its different mission areas. He has volunteered at Blue Knights Bingo since 1981 helping support the drum corps’ fundraising efforts. In addition, he helped open the current Blue Knights Bingo location in Arvada, and still serves as a certified games manager and part of the management team. He also ran the Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association (RMCGA) bingo game in Arvada when Opus 10 was part of the Blue Knights in the early 2000’s.

Doug has also been a leader with Ascend Performing Arts’ events. He was a founding member of the Drums Along the Rockies Committee in 1985 (and remains the Chairperson today). He has helped manage the Drums Along the Rockies show starting in 1984 and has worked every year since as Assistant Operations Manager and Operations Manager. He became the Events Director with the passing of fellow Blue Knights Hall of Famer, George Lindstrom in 2021. In addition, Doug has also managed other Ascend Performing Arts events such as Corps Encore in Ogden, UT, and Drums Along the Sandias in Albuquerque, NM.

Closer to home, Doug worked with fellow Blue Knights Hall of Famer, Dan Burke, as operations managers for the new Friendship Cup High School Marching Competitions in 2012 serving 24 high school bands in Colorado. He was promoted to Event Director for the Friendship Cup in 2016. Doug even played a key role in the Blue Knights hosting the 2004 Drum Corps International World Championships in Denver where he also served as the local housing manager for 51 drum corps. Doug’s involvement also positively impacted the Winter Guard International (WGI) community. Through the years, Doug has supported the Rocky Mountain Percussion Association (RMPA) and the Rocky Mountain Color Guard (RMCGA) circuits at location competitions and board meetings. He even worked with George &; Lynn Lindstrom, the RMPA and RMCGA leadership teams to host several shows by the Blue Knights to help bolster color guard and indoor percussion in the Rocky Mountain Region. Today in 2023, the number of RMPA and RMCGA performing ensembles have significantly increased in number and competitiveness because of his dedication and hard work.

Finally, Doug has been a member of the Ascend Performing Arts Board of Directors for over 20 years since the late 1990s. He has even served in leadership roles such as Board Secretary, Vice Chair, and Board Liaison to the Blue Knights Alumni Association for the past 10 years. Doug continues to be a leader in the Ascend Performing Arts organization as the Events Director for all of Ascend’s events. Doug continues to make the performing arts community stronger every year with his dedication to ensuring our events are run at the highest levels in the country to the benefit of tens of thousands annually.

all a Amy Lueb

Amy Lueb carries the spirit of the Blue Knights with her and has used the drive and hard work that she developed during her time with the Blue Knights to positively impact the lives of those around her. Amy became a Blue Knight in 1992 as a color guard performer at the young age of 15. Amy continued to perform with the Blue Knights for 8 years until her age-out in 1997.

During her time as a performer, Amy stood out as a leader in the drum corps. Over the past 31 years, Amy has been a color guard performer, color guard captain, drum major, camp volunteer, office administrator, and a financial contributor to Ascend Performing Arts. She taught spin, rifle, and dance to the Boulder Fairview Color Guard from 1995 to 2010. Amy led her color guard students through 15 years of successful seasons and a lifetime of positive and nurturing memories.

When Amy’s teaching days came to an end, she continued to give back to the color guard activity with Winter Guard International (WGI) where she has spent the last 20 years judging winter guards. For the last 10 of those years, Amy also served as a color guard judge for the Colorado Bandmasters Association (CBA) where she continues to emphasize the quality, skill, and dedication to the marching arts that she learned with the Blue Knights. Amy personifies the Blue Knights spirit and continues to give her time and talent in a variety of areas in the performing arts community in Colorado.

all a Harvey Pierre

Harvey Pierre’s memory continues to demonstrate the Blue Knights values of humanitarianism, dedication, and opportunity.

Harvey began driving tractor trailers for the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps in the summer of 1999. With his welcoming personality and infectious smile, he quickly became a member of the Blue Knights family for the next 20 years.

As a vehicle driver for the Blue Knights, Harvey safely traversed over 10,000 miles across the country each year with the lives of the Blue Knights in his hands. He was always thrilled at the opportunity to get the drum corps and their equipment onto the field for performances and could be found on the 50 yard line cheering on the Blue Knights night after night during the Drum Corps International (DCI) summer national tours.

Harvey was also a wizard with a tool kit, and could often be found head and shoulders in the engine compartment of a bus, fixing problems, making repairs, and keeping the Blue Knights rolling down the road.

Harvey encouraged the people he worked with to enjoy the day, no matter how hard it got on the road, and to care for our fellow community members. Many Blue Knights credit their own successes because of his natural ability to inspire and motivate all of us.

In 2018, Harvey was diagnosed with cancer and spent his last tour driving with the Blue Knights. He passed away shortly after the summer national tour concluded. He literally spent his last healthy days with the drum corps he loved and who loved him.

all a Kenny Ward

Kenny Ward has been a steady force and reliable Blue Knights tour staff member for over 34 years.

While working for Jeffco School District as a school bus driver, he applied to be a tractor trailer driver for the Blue Knights in 1989. After an interview with then Blue Knights executive director, Mark Arnold, Kenny was hired to drive the bus for the horn line. He then transitioned to driving one of several semitrucks that travel with the Blue Knights both in the summer with the Drum Corps and during the winter season driving Percussion Ensemble equipment out to Dayton. Kenny was someone the Blue Knights could always count on to ensure that the transportation convoy traveled safely and followed federal guidelines. In addition to his outstanding service record, Kenny recruited more drivers for the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps and Blue Knights Percussion Ensemble.

Kenny also served in the United States Army as a Master Sergeant where he was in charge of the National Guard staffing at Regional Airports in Colorado. He served during 9/11 and was one of 14 that completed guerrilla warfare training in Panama.

Kenny’s steady leadership in the area of transportation, concern for the safety of all, and devotion to the organization, especially for the members, has been a prime example of what the Blue Knights are all about.

ASCEND HONOR ROLL DONORS

Since its inception in 1958 as a drum and bugle corps, the Blue Knights has developed into a multi-faceted youth performing arts organization which serves thousands each year. Performing arts ensembles, educational outreach, and multiple performance events all speak to an organization that has evolved through time, meeting the needs of the Blue Knights and the community it serves.

In 2010, after an exhaustive rebranding process, the Board of Directors announced Ascend Performing Arts as the name of their parent organization of the Blue Knights and associated education and events. The name change was made to express the scope and impact of the organization more accurately, better positioning it for future growth and funding.

Ascend Performing Arts strives to promote and support the performing arts in the Rocky Mountain region. The organization partners with Colorado music education and other performing arts organizations to benefit youth interested in the performing arts. Ascend’s mission promotes four areas of focus called our 4 E’s: Education, Ensembles, Events and Entertainment.

Thank you to all our donors who have supported Ascend through the following:

Online 50/50 Raffle: A fundraiser where the purchaser of the winning ticket wins 50% of the tickets sold.

Facebook/Meta Fundraisers: Donations set up by individuals for birthdays or to help Ascend Fundraising.
