DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Dear Audience,

Welcome to the 30th season of the Catherine M. Bellamy Theater! We’re positively “revolting” with excitement to bring you this production of Matilda the Musical. Matilda’s story has always been near and dear to my heart. From watching the movie, reading the book, and seeing Matilda the Musical on Broadway in 2015 (my first Broadway show), I learned that you don’t have to wait for someone else to change your story. You have the power to make real change and a real difference. Stories like these are so important and bringing them to life on stage has been an absolute dream!

When Lindsey Collins asked if I would be interested in directing this show, I was a bit “chokey.” This was a new experience for me and while apprehensive in the beginning I wouldn’t trade this experience for a hundred chocolate cakes!

To my littles: Thank you for always showing up ready to learn and try new things. Thank you for always giving me a reason to cheer you on, teach you new things, or laugh at your funny commentary during rehearsals. I will never forget when my phone fell into the piano—thank you for helping me get it out. You all are so special to me. Enjoy your time on the stage and soak in every moment. You’ll never forget your first show with a sold-out crowd.

To my older cast members (teens and adults alike): You have been such a big help. Thank you for guiding the younger cast members, helping with the set, and shining in your spotlights. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work through the entire process. I couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you.

To Mom (Melody), Grace, and Kayla: My right and left hands, I don’t even know how to begin to thank you. Kayla, your level of organization and scheduling helped me stay on track and make sure everything on the to-do list was completed. Thank you for all the note-taking, gold star counting, and talking through every detail of this production. Grace, who would have ever thought we would be here after decades of gymnastics and dance? Thank you for reading my mind and creating the most beautiful dances to help move the story along. Thank you for all the laughs and long talks and always being willing to help. Mom, thank you for stepping in when I needed you the most. You’ve always been there for me time and time again, and this is no exception. Thank you for filling in for John and helping the music sound better than I could imagine. You have always been there for me, and I know I can always count on you.

To all the parents and crew: Thank you for helping paint the books and set, for bringing your kids to all the rehearsals, and for being so willing to help out whenever asked. Thank you to Tyler for helping me create this world for the show. Thank you for helping me bring all the ideas in my head to life and telling me when I’m crazy for some of them. I seriously could not have done my job without you and your constant support. Thank you to my dad for helping me pick up set pieces, bringing food, and taking care of Gus Gus during the long nights at the center. Thank you to Lindsey for trusting me with this show and for all the encouragement over the years.

This show has not come without its heartaches. This year we lost one of our beloved volunteers and performers, Matthew Nguyen. Matt was one of the most talented people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He always had a funny joke or comment to keep things light-hearted. He helped me more times than I could count, and I will be forever grateful for his friendship. This production is dedicated to Matt and the joy he brought to the theatre. We love you, Matt, and always will.

Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! Remember, even if you’re little, you can do a lot!

MUSICAL DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Iam thrilled and honored to be making my music directorial debut with this incredible production. My journey here has been an exciting one, having volunteered in various roles—from performing in Sister Act to managing costumes, quick changes, and organizing opening night receptions. Initially, I started volunteering to understand the theater world my daughter loves so much, and now, I’ve found a new family in this theater community. A special shout-out to Bethany, our talented director, and my amazing daughter, for inviting me to be part of this production team. We’ve had the best summer working together in this new capacity, and it’s been a joy reconnecting with our gifted choreographer, Grace. Having known Grace for most of her life, working with her feels like having two daughters by my side.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my wonderful husband, Terry, for his unwavering support. From handling household chores to taking care of my mom, and preparing meals for Bethany and me during rehearsals, you’ve been our rock. And of course, thank you for taking care of Gus Gus.

This cast and crew are some of the most talented performers I’ve had the privilege to work with. The dedication and hard work they’ve put in over the last two months is astounding. Both new performers and veterans alike have given their all to ensure the best show for you, our audience.

Stepping into this role has been a unique experience. I am grateful to John Alec Briggs for laying the groundwork before I took on the role of music director. Thank you, Bethany, for teaching the music initially while I was getting up to speed. And to the cast, thank you for your patience and dedication as I found my rhythm. This was my first time directing children, and their energy and eagerness have been inspiring. The adults and teens continue to amaze me with their talent and commitment.

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
