Living Out Our Faith

Bringing the entire campus together three times each week in the historic Hughes Auditorium, Chapel is the cornerstone of spiritual life at Asbury. Student-led worship and teaching from academic, professional and ministry-based guest speakers engages and challenges us as a community, reflecting Asbury’s unchanging commitment to a quality education integrated fully with a strong and vibrant Christian faith. Home to multiple spontaneous revivals through the years — some of which made national news — Hughes Auditorium also hosts additional services throughout the year where students worship, pray and renew their faith.

Our faith isn’t limited to Hughes, though. At Asbury, we live out our faith in every setting — in the classroom, but also in the cafeteria and student center and in residence hall conversations and on the athletic fields. Christ is the center of our campus and the heart of our community, and we live that out every day. As a community, we strive to follow a lifestyle that promotes learning and growing in faith while developing our minds.

Worship Arts

The Worship Arts Program is one example of the way spiritual vitality permeates Asbury — both in academics and in campus life. Available as a major or a minor, Worship Arts prepares students to use the arts, including music, design, theater, dance and more, in worship. Student bands lead worship in Chapel, organize events on campus and go on tour during breaks.

Dr. Jon Roller ‘83, director of the Worship Arts program, says the program is fueled by love for God and love for people — and that worship, in turn, fuels love.

“Part of spiritual vitality, for us, is asking, ‘How do we love each other well, and how do we love people outside of us well?’” Roller said. “The Great Commandment is to love God and love people, and we get to do both of those a lot. We get to worship the trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that worship actually fuels our love for people.”

Community Service

Service is a cornerstone of community at Asbury. Students regularly volunteer with organizations like Church Under the Bridge (a ministry to the homeless in Lexington, Ky.), Refuge for Women, Eastern State Hospital, Miracle League (a baseball program for special needs children pictured above) and many others.

During breaks, groups of students serve throughout the U.S., volunteering in inner-city ministry in Chicago (right), serving in churches and camps through Summer Ministry Teams, completing impactful internships and much more.

Asbury also has a long tradition of volunteering in disaster relief, with service including Pass Christian, Miss.

(2006), New Orleans, La. (2012), Baton Rouge, La. (2017), and most recently a hurricane-relief trip to Florida in 2018. Whatever opportunities they choose, Asburians — student, faculty, staff and alumni — reflect the love of God through service. asbury.edu/admissions | 21

Life on campus is a crucial part of the Asbury experience. Our students embrace the residential life and many of them spend all four years in campus housing.

Bringing together students of all class years, majors and extracurricular activities, our residence halls build community through small groups and student-organized events.

Cross-Cultural Affairs

From our campus in Kentucky, Asbury prepares students to engage cultures and advance the cause of Christ around the world not just after graduation, but throughout their college experience.

Class Identity

An Asbury tradition since the 1930s, class identity builds relationships in a very unique way.

Each new freshman class has a unique name, scripture verse, colors and class-specific events, resulting in a tight network of friendships that last far beyond graduation.

Classes work together to host events throughout the year and compete against each other in the annual week-long Legacy Games, culminating in a dance-off to crown the champions.

Our current classes are Visionary 2020, Appointed 2021, Faithful 2022 and Surrendered 2023, and all class photos — from 1894 to the current classes — are displayed in the hallways around Hughes Auditorium.

Eagle Athletics

With 16 intercollegiate sports, cheerleading and tumbling (all with scholarships), Asbury has a team for you whether you’re an athlete or you prefer to cheer from the stands.

Combining talent, passion and a program-wide attitude of servant leadership, our athletic teams are a force to be reckoned with.

You don’t have to be a college athlete to enjoy sports at Asbury, though. Vibrant intramural leagues and multiple groups for pick-up games bring the action to the whole campus, and fitness classes and access to our state-of-the-art workout facilities are available for free to all students throughout the year.

Maj. Ric Speakman ’01 is an Air Force flight surgeon. Sky Speakman ’03 is a research scientist. Mark Speakman ’06 is a production engineer. Luke Speakman ’06 is a software engineer. In addition to their STEM-oriented careers, the Speakman brothers share something else in common — four life-changing years at Asbury University. “The faculty understand how Christianity and science weave together to explain God’s creation,” Luke said. “Each of the professors I had when I was at Asbury had a dramatic impact on me.”

As a screenwriter known for films like “Mom’s Night Out” (2014) and “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” (2017), Andrea Nasfell ’95 knows what it takes to succeed in the film industry. And with experience both as an alum and as an instructor at Asbury, she says Asbury’s Media Communication program prepares students excellently. “Asbury’s program is never playing catch-up — they’re always on top of what professionals in the industry are doing right now,” Nasfell said.

“That has to do not only with facilities, equipment and training, but also with an understanding of where the culture is and what kind of stories we should be telling.”

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Asbury University offers several tiers of academic scholarships as well as hundreds of institutional, endowed and competitive scholarships and grants. More than 99 percent of our current students receive some type of financial aid and 100 percent of incoming students in Fall 2019 received a scholarship.

Our financial aid awards are personalized to each student’s situation. Higher education is an investment for any family, but we believe that Asbury is worth it and we are ready to partner with you to make it happen.

Our Presidential Scholars Program is for our high-achieving applicants with a high school GPA of 3.5 or above and test scores of 27+ (ACT), 1200+ (SAT) or 85+ (CLT).

These students receive our Presidential Scholarships and, if they are admitted by early January, are invited to participate in our Scholarship Competition and compete for our top scholarships worth up to 100% of tuition, along with a spot in our First Year Honors Seminar.

GPA scholarships are available to students with a high school GPA between 2.5–4.5 who don’t qualify for our Presidential Scholars Program.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES _____________ _____ __________ Center for Wholeness and Wellness The center provides free services (with the exception of certain physicals or special events) for students carrying at least nine credit hours per semester for evaluation and treatment of illness and injury, both acute and chronic issues.

The Health Service Clinic offers appointments with registered nurses, and the University physician also holds regular clinic hours twice per week. The staff of licensed, graduate and practicum counselors integrate counseling practice with Christ-centered principles. All services are confidential.

Student Success Programs Asbury provides support services to help students transition into the academic, spiritual, cultural and social climate of the University. Extended orientation programs are offered for new first-year, transfer and international students, as well as American students who have lived overseas during the previous two years.

Registrar’s Office This office organizes and administers academic records, class registration and graduation functions. It builds initial class schedules for new students and assists with schedules in following semesters. New students must submit their Pre-Tuition Deposit before their schedule can be built. New students in the fall who deposit by May 1 receive priority registration for their schedule. Graduation requirements are published in the Bulletin (asbury.edu/bulletin).

Asbury Academy

Get a head start on your college education at Asbury University!

Asbury Academy, our dual-enrollment program for high school juniors and seniors, allows you to complete foundational requirements taught by Asbury faculty. Not only will you study under outstanding professors, but you will be taught from a Biblical worldview in every classroom. Asbury is a full accredited intuition whose credits are accepted worldwide if you decide to attend another university after high school.

How It Works On Campus — Asbury Academy offers classes on campus to local students. High school seniors may take up to four free credit hours each semester, and additional courses are available at less than half our regular tuition rate. High school juniors may take on-campus classes at less than 50 percent of our regular tuition rate.

Online — Asbury Academy also offers courses online.

These classes are offered in an eight-week intensive format, and Academy students can take two consecutive courses each semester. Online classes are available at over 80 percent less than the regular tuition rate.

How To Apply

Placement — Your ACT/ SAT scores will determine your placement in English and Math courses, so be sure to complete either exam in the semester before you plan to enroll in these classes through Asbury Academy.

Application Process The following items are required for acceptance into Asbury Academy:

Asbury Academy students who take 12 hours of general education courses and maintain a 3.0 GPA in their Asbury classes are eligible to earn a $1,500 scholarship.

Awarded all four years of undergrad at Asbury, this scholarship totals $6,000.

Asbury University welcomes transfer students.

We know this is not your first time entering college, so we will help you make a smooth and easy transition. You are not starting over… just continuing on.

Asbury University has a rolling admission policy, meaning that we accept applications for admission throughout the calendar year. Apply early for the best possible financial aid awards — in the fall of your senior year of high school, or even as early as spring of your junior year.

Standardized Test Scores

CLEP, AP, IB & AICE Courses

High School Preparation

Transferring Courses

We accept almost all courses taken at regionally-accredited institutions, as long as you have earned a grade of C or better and the course is 100-level or higher. If you have attended a non-accredited institution, we will still evaluate your courses on a case-by-case basis. We will accept up to 75 semester hours of transfer work. Courses that have transferred from other colleges and universities can be found at: asbury.edu/transfer-credit.

Transfer Scholarships

All of our financial aid packages are created by hand and personalized to the student. As a transfer student, we want to make sure that you receive the academic scholarship you would have been awarded had you attended Asbury as a freshman. If you met two of our three academic criteria when you graduated high school, and you have maintained a strong GPA in college, send us your high school transcripts and your ACT/SAT/CLT test scores and we will take that into consideration as we create your financial aid offer.

We are committed to helping you maintain your academic progress to the best of our ability. We can tell you how long it will take to complete your desired major at Asbury University after your transcripts have been reviewed, even if you have not been officially accepted, and we can help you select courses at your current institution to keep you on track at Asbury while still fulfillling requirements where you are.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS When To Apply Asbury has a rolling admissions policy, but we encourage international students to apply as early as possible to allow plenty of time for any necessary visa processes.

2. Send transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions you have attended to the Office of Admissions.

3. If required, demonstrate your English proficiency through the appropriate exams (see below).

English Proficiency Test

• Native English speakers who are citizens of Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the British West Indies are required to submit SAT, ACT or CLT scores instead of the TOEFL or IELTS, unless they qualify to apply as test optional.

• Applicants who have studied as a full-time student in one of the above countries within the past two years, have received a grade of B or better in at least one English class and have a good academic record at that school have the option to submit SAT or ACT scores to determine whether the English Proficiency Test may be waived.

• Applicants who have studied as a full-time student within the past two years at a school where English is the language used in classroom teaching, have received a grade of B or better in at least one English class, and have a good academic record at that school have the option to submit SAT or ACT scores to determine whether the English Proficiency Test may be waived.

• All other international applicants are required to submit test scores from the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for admission to the University. Minimum required scores for admission in good standing are 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS.

Transferring International Courses

To receive credit for previous college or university work from a foreign university, you must submit authenticated copies of all post-secondary academic records to the Office of Admissions through the World Education Services (WES) credential services clearinghouse. Applicants must order the WES ICAP (International Credential Advantage Package) evaluation package and verified transcript, and must request a Courseby-Course Report. (BASIC evaluation packages and Document-by-Document Reports will not be accepted.) When completing the application, Asbury University must be selected as a recipient institution. Applicants may access this service and submit a U.S. Credential Evaluation Application at wes.org/application/apply_now.asp. Applicants are responsible for paying the Credential Services Fee for the WES ICAP Course-by-Course Evaluation, as well as the appropriate delivery fee to the World Education Services through the above Web site. NOTE: Fees are not refundable and are subject to change. Under certain circumstances, additional administrative fees may be charged.

Admitted International Students

Upon admission to Asbury, submit the Asbury University Statement of Financial Responsibility form, a certified bank document verifying a current balance in USD, and a copy of your valid passport to the Office of International Admissions. A pre-tuition deposit equal to $2,500 USD must also be submitted in full before an I-20 document may be created and sent to you. ($500 of the pre-tuition deposit is non-refundable.)
