TABLE OF

AND PEACE INSTITUTE

Location Lefkosa, North Cyprus

Area 2513m2

Year 2016 - 2017 Spring

The challenge was to propose a building that would act as a community centre at the heart of the walled city of Nicosia in its buffer zone to provied act as a pivot for the ongoing process of unification of the two sides of the island of Cyprus.

This would also include functional use proposal for the buffer zone separating the north and south side of the island of Cyprus.

My conceptual approach was lead by the idea of "the stitch".

This was to be translated in the following ways:

Building Mass

The building mass meant to symbolically represent two sides uniting therefore having two buildings mirroring each other be joint/unified/stitched by a central canopy acting as an access point between one buidling and the other.

Buffer Zone Use

In order to further connect the two sides, I proposed the buffer zone to be a mix-use urban park inspired by Cantral Park in New York and the Superkilen park in Copenhagen to provide a space for a multitude of activities for both sides eg. the elderly to relax and contemplate as well as the youth a place to enjoy varios activities such as running, skating, biking etc.

Accessibility

The accessibiliy to and from the site was also proposed to enhance relations between both the north and the south of cyprus by providing access both ways

DEVELOPMENT

Location Kyrenia, North Cyprus

Area 12,252m2

Year 2017 - 2018 Fall

The challenge was to propose a "mix-use" development for the area close to the north shore of Kyrenia

The building(s) was/were to have multiple functions required in a growing urban setting such as residences, offices, cultural hubs e.t.c in order to further enhance the Urbanisation of Kyrenia and North Cyprus as a whole.

My concept proposal was lead by the idea of "growth/ change/ branching out"

This was inspired by the evolution the function of buildings, where in ancient history they existed for shelter and protection and later became hubs of socialization and cultural advancement, storage of resources, places of work, education e.t.c.

The idea has been applied in the buidlings in the following ways:

FUNCTIONS

- Residential blocks (1-3 bedroom apartments)

- Commercial areas (retail outlets, supermarkets, restaurant/cafeterias)

- Cultural facilities (multipurpose hall, cinema theatre, conference)

- Sports facilities (gyms and sports pitches)

- Offices

BUILDING MASS

The building mass is slender throughout and various functions branch out from the central core as an indication of the change of functions

The symbolic meaning of the building crossing the creek represents mans endeaver to conquer nature after spending years struggling and fighting for survival and sustainance.

ACCESSIBILITY

The proposal attempted to merge with the existing context where the North most of the site had a vehicular access to the site (A bus stop). This would be pivotal for allowing easy access to the site for people who use public transportation system to access to access the complex.

Location Kunduchi, Dar es Salaam Tanzania

Role Junior Architect

The project was for the provision of an uninterrupted power supply for the Analytical Fingerprint Laboratory (AFP Lab) at the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) along with making the existing facilities robust

This was achieved by providing a PVP system with batteries and inverters together with a diesel fuel tank connected to the existing backup generator in order to provide a solution that would have 3 seemlessly transitioning power supplies:

1. Local power grid 2. Backup generator + fueltank 3 PVP system with inverters and batteries

Additional Improvements

1. New roof structure to enable mounting of solar panels 2. Access ladders and catwalks for solar panel maintenance 3. Emergency Shower/ Eyewash for improved lab safety 4. Additional fire fighting measures on the corridor

5 Display area to showcase the power usage statistics of the building

6 Fire escape Corridors for improved fire safety
