Sculpture titled “ A small big tower of dream and dread” at IPAF, Karachi, Pakistan.

A community based place making effort that aims to dissect and understand the South asian identity in a neighbourhood in Montreal that is comprised of mainly South Asians. This effort aligns itself with community actors that are hoping to integrate into society. It allows for the creation of dialogue, conversation and thinking about an evolving south asian identity by screening films that questions tropes about the people of a particular region. This is an evolving effort to include more placemaking endeavours into its fold.

On 3rd March 2019, I converted my garage into a non-commercial community cinema.

It became a place far more than just an independent cinema: we are a democratic response to the lack of entertainment opportunities for young people in a divisive city where public spaces are limited.

Our mission is to bridge the urban class divide through art.

Today Cinema 73 has become organically growing community space where the domestic help of the community’s residents sit beside their employers and enjoy a film with free popcorn on balmy weekend nights. It is a safe space for women, children, and gender non-conforming folks to consume art without the fear of being harassed. It has become a source of artistic dissemination which brings inspired artists, Film-makers, cinephiles, architects, designers, urban dwellers, movie watchers, workers in the informal sector, bored evening spenders and all other interested karachiites, together for very important and valuable conversations.

Bauhaus inspired space ideated and imagined for Goethe Institute Karachi. The skillset applied to this project was the ideation of the vision for the space, Project management skills, Drawing and render development. It was valuable opportunity do create a cultural space for an international cultural instituition.

It was a learning about the values that go into the creation of a community space by a large scale institute like Goethe I nstitute.

Considering the aging population of the UK, and from what was gained from Interaction with the elderly, the project was An elderly individuals dream, a modular apartment block, each Apartment has a detachable ‘Cabinet of Curiosity’ that attaches to a Zeppelin, and goes on Holiday with the individual to sister branches of the Apartment block all over Europe. Upon landing these Cabinets act as Museum displays. This project re-defined the place of the elderly in society. It was a commentary on dreams, and immobility of an elderly individual.

In this research project, the modality of survey was an important teaching regarding community centric design. Designing a board game as a way of surveying was as effective learning outcome.

The drawing is the result of reading the water of the River of Leith in Edinburgh, with the speculation that, if examined with care over time, the surface of a river landscape might reveal something of topography, of the invisible subaquatic structures, events and occupants that inhabit and affect the river along its length. Through a studied examination of the river surface, from gestural overdrawing to precise graphic tracing, a river morphology was formed, a three-dimensional river described without its basin as form almost glacier-like in its complexity. And within this inky mass an interloper was introduced, a brown trout – presently limited in its locus of movement by engineered weirs and dams – but here imagined as a lithe occupant writhing through the architectures of the solid river-scape. This library is a library where you don’t have access to books. It instead proposes that you donate the books, allow the books to be precisely scanned and translated into data that is hosted in the data servers above.

The physical book is then burnt in the incinerating tower, which may power a portion of the building.

Understanding the current state of academic institutions like libraries, pairing that with mankind’s current problem of over consumption, this library is a provocative exploration of the state of current academic institutions.
