Sand and Mortar: The screen in the city Provocations: Systems for change:

The City and the Screen

On 3rd March 2019, I converted my garage into a non-commercial community cinema. I live in Seaview Township, directly opposite the main public beach strip of Karachi. Less than eight months later, we have screened 34 films, and hosted 3 non-film events, which include a showcase for emerging animators, a spoken word event on mental health, and a multi-genre show focused on sound and digital art.

However, we are more than just an independent cinema: we are a democratic response to the lack of entertainment opportunities for young people in a divisive city where public spaces are limited.

Our mission is to bridge the urban class divide through art. Today Cinema 73 has become organically growing community space where the domestic help of the community’s residents sit beside their employers and enjoy a film with free popcorn on balmy weekend nights. It is a safe space for women, children, and gender non-conforming folks to consume art without the fear of being harassed. It has become a source of artistic dissemination which brings inspired artists, Film-makers, cinephiles, architects, designers, urban dwellers, movie watchers, workers in the informal sector, bored evening spenders and all other interested karachiites, together.

Cinema 73 is a space to fall in love with the salty Karachi breeze. It is an architect’s conversation with his street. Karachiites have shown their true empathetic, modern selves in supporting this venture and I am excited to see what this organically develops into. We hope to make our model sustainable and have pop-up franchises emerge in different neighbourhoods and perhaps eventually in different cities. We want to revolutionise who gets to consume art and where.

Barbershops in Little Jamaica, Toronto have long been places that offer supportive interpersonal connections and are spaces that enable the transmission of culture.

This project is an investigation into the possibility of Barbershops as formal extensions of the public realm, serving to accentuate the informal services provided by barbershops whilst positioning them to becoming recognized community hubs, and places of cultural and artistic significance.

This design project in its initial phase proposes to tackle the vulnerabilities related to flooding in Belen. Through a nodal system of plugging-in this project attaches services to the neighbourhood as a way of respecting the local vernacular but improving their ways of living through light gestures.

The drawing is the result of reading the water of the River of Leith in Edinburgh, with the speculation that, examined with care over time, the surface of a river landscape might reveal something of topography, of the invisible subaquatic structures, events and occupants that inhabit and affect the river along its length. Through a studied examination of the river surface, from gestural overdrawing to precise graphic tracing, a river morphology was formed, a three-dimensional river described without its basin as a form almost glacier-like in its complexity. And within this inky mass an interloper was introduced, a brown trout – presently limited in its locus of movement by engineered weirs and dams – but here imagined as a lithe occupant writhing through the architectures of the solid river-scape. design

This library is a library where you don’t have access to books. It instead proposes that you donate the books, allow the books to be precisely scanned and translated into data that is hosted in the data servers above.

The physical book is then burnt in the incinerating tower, which may power a portion of the building.

Understanding the current state of academic institutions like libraries, pairing that with mankind’s current problem of over consumption, this library is a provocative exploration of the state of current academic institutions.
