• Introduction This course has afforded me the chance to delve into the historical evolution of Africa as a continent, South Africa as a nation, and specifically, the city of Johannesburg. Through this exploration, I have compared the development of Johannesburg, a major urban center, with other global mega-cities both within and beyond Africa. The projects encompassed an examination of the history of my local environment, providing a unique opportunity to reflect on the developmental trajectories of other regions. As a result of this coursework, I now possess a more profound comprehension of Johannesburg's historical context and its intricate connections with, and impact on, various parts of the world.

• PROJECT-1: African World Making This collaborative project brought together a team of six individuals, and our chosen focus was the Niamey 2000 Housing project in Niger, a visionary creation

by United4design. As we delved into our research, we were struck by the project's remarkable success, serving as an exemplary model for the development of housing in low-income sectors, significantly elevating the quality of life for its residents. Yet, alongside its promising aspects, the project was not without its share of challenges and controversies.

These challenges raised important questions about the feasibility of this type of housing to sustain the substantial population in Niger. Over time, the emergence of issues such as flooding and erosion began to render some of the houses uninhabitable, thereby initiating a profound debate regarding the delicate equilibrium between innovative design and practical functionality within the realm of low-income housing.

In spite of these challenges, our engagement with this project has profoundly shaped my perspective, compelling me to think critically about how I perceive the low-income housing sector and its intrinsic significance within the broader landscape of world architecture. This exploration has ignited a more profound understanding of the intricate dynamics at play when designing housing solutions for disadvantaged communities, prompting us to consider innovative solutions that balance design aesthetics with the pragmatic needs of inhabitants.

• PROJECT-2: Housing for all Exploring the overarching theme of "Housing for all," my partner and I undertook an examination of a housing complex with a 40-year history, which was constructed during the apartheid era in the affluent suburb of Sandown, Sandton.

Our research revealed a striking division within the building that persists even today, where residents inhabit the upper floors, while the staff resides in less hospitable semi-basements. The architectural design intentionally minimizes interaction between these two segments to such an extent that it segregates their entrances with 2-meter-high brick walls and obscures the windows with opaque paint.

This building serves as a poignant illustration of how historical hardships continue to perpetuate divisions and remain concealed within our society. It underscores the importance of scrutinizing the architectural and societal constructs of the past to better understand the implications they still hold today, shedding light on hidden disparities that persist in housing structures, ultimately prompting us to contemplate the concept of equitable housing for all.

• PROJECT-3: Johannesburg as Modern City

The story of Sandton CBD Engaging in this project provided me with a unique vantage point to view my own surroundings through the lens of architecture, allowing me to delve into its rich history and evolution. Building upon the foundation laid by our previous project, I broadened my perspective to examine Sandton's Central Business District (CBD) as a prime exemplar of an "edge city" nested within the sprawling urban tapestry of Johannesburg. My aim was to scrutinize the myriad influences that have shaped and driven its transformation into the esteemed "Golden Square Mile" of the African continent.

The foundation of my research rested on a combination of insights derived from interviews with local residents and workers who have witnessed the area's evolution firsthand, and a comprehensive study of literature that offered insights into development trajectories akin to those witnessed in Sandton. This project not only allowed me to gain an in-depth understanding of my immediate environment but also to appreciate how broader urban trends and the interplay of various factors have molded this distinctive urban enclave.

• Writing work outside the Course Within the framework of our design course, we were assigned the compelling task of crafting an illustrated essay that delves into a self-reflective exploration of my experiences in the third year and the transformative impact it has had on my performance. This journey of introspection has allowed me to discern a pronounced evolution in my design practice, marked by increased criticality, consciousness, and meticulousness.

I embarked on an in-depth examination of the factors responsible for these shifts, seeking to unravel how this year's experiences have molded me. My focus extended to a careful analysis of specific projects undertaken during this academic year, all of which collectively resonate with my personal commitment to being a meticulous, conscious, and discerning designer. This illustrated essay serves as a reflective narrative, weaving together personal experiences and design insights to shed light on the dynamic relationship between selfdevelopment and design growth.
