Arwa Faiyaz Godiwala

Architecture Student University of Melbourne. Melbourne, Victoria.

As I reminisce over all the things I loved doing around the age of 11, my curiosity about nature and the world never ended. Spatial-ness became a recurring and a relevant component in my architectural work and my personal life. As a student I have always believed that the role of an architect isn’t about the freedom to design, but as a strategist who seeks to address, challenge and consolidate people’s needs and the contextual nature through extensive research and design exploration. Architecture, to me, has always expanded horizons on how people perceive nature and the space within it. My aim is to consistently find and develop new approaches through hard-work and disciplined effort to understand nature and further my architectural skills.

A space manifesting the values of rustic, elegant luxury for the diners; A habitat for plants to flourish.

The ideology of design embarked through mapping existing trees and analyse the cardinal directions to concieve the idea of a conservatory. There was a beautiful canopy of trees that shaded the compound. The west side of the structure was protected by trees that allowed a soft light to filter indoors. The east side required shading for the morning light which was well taken care of while designing the space.

The design philosophy was to experience the space as a grounded place, rooted within the trees which ascend to the first floor that framed a piece of the skies. The density of earth is seen in the stone-clad bar, while the transparency of glass roof conveys the lightness of leaves above. The outdoor seating nestled between plants expresses the feel of a garden cafe. The first floor as a beaming sunlit space with a glass roof and stucco walls which brings back a happy summer memory.

The proportions were consequential while designing the elevation of the structure. The length and breadth of the existing structure was divided into equal parts as most conservatories have window frames of a repetitive size. The aim was to create the same visual experience for this restaurant as well. All vertical columns were planned to be equally distant from each other as much as possible. The challenge of placing the horizontal lines of the structure based on the first floor slab and doors was resolved by getting the lengths and breadths close to 1.6 of the golden ratio.

The colour palatte for the space was raw, organic and minimal.
Staircase plan

The top image exhibits the entire volume of the structure that is placed under the beautiful canopy of trees . The M.S staircase design is visible in the image below with vertical supports that gives it a sleek look without compromising on the strength of the structure. Panel of ashwood are used as steps and the main frame is a M.S structure finished in grey color.

The image on the right highlights the proportions of the roof truss and the front facade.
