We foster collaboration among the best minds from research labs, classrooms, and beyond to advance innovation and entrepreneurship education and to provide unique opportunities for STEM students and researchers to fully realize their potential to improve the world.

Since our founding in 1995, we’ve directly supported or trained over 6,500 science and technology inventors and innovators, and nurtured thousands of their startups reaching millions of people in over 50 countries with ground-breaking technological advancements in fields such as biomedicine and healthcare, sustainable energy and materials, and solutions for low-resource settings.

letter from VentureWell ceo and president The landscape of innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) education has grown and evolved since we launched more than 20 years ago, creating new opportunities and challenges for innovators, faculty, and the broader entrepreneurial support ecosystem. Over the past year we’ve continued to lean in to this challenge by developing an ambitious set of strategies and initiatives to remain nimble – and provide forward-thinking approaches – to the fast-changing needs of our constituents.

We strengthened and expanded our commitment to help innovators incorporate sustainability principles into their inventions, and provided support to faculty to create new or transform existing courses that promote sustainability in STEM entrepreneurship.

We expanded our ecosystem development initiatives beyond campus walls. We delivered sought-after ecosystem-level change programming around the world, which included work with university systems to develop early-stage innovator training programs in Egypt and Turkey and angel investor trainings in South America and Southeast Asia. In the U.S. we’ve begun to develop a regional development initiative that builds on our university partners and connections to the innovation ecosystem to accelerate the level of regional activity and support the development of vibrant I&E hubs.

We accelerated our work as a backbone organization supporting network development. Our work with large-scale institutional change communities – from networks focused on equity and

student success in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Frontier Set program to increasing community engagement in the National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers Program (IUCRC) initiative – is leading to the development of new tools and capabilities.

We’re continuing to innovate in our grants and training programs to support I&E educators. Over the past year, we piloted three community engagement strategies to enhance the impact of these programs and foster broad institutional change. This work will continue in the coming year.

EARLY-STAGE INNOVATORS

Over the past year, we cast a wide support net to ensure more early-stage innovators are equipped to solve complex 21st century challenges. We integrated sustainable design principles into our early-stage innovator curriculum to empower student inventors to develop products that don’t strain our natural resources. With generous support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, we leveraged our investment readiness program, ASPIRE, to pilot a U.S.-based regional I&E ecosystem development program to better support inventor-entrepreneurs in areas with limited access to early-stage innovation resources. Our global work expanded to include the successful launch of an early-stage science and technology innovation training program in Egypt. Through our Xcelerator program, we amplified our training and mentorship for USAID’s Saving Lives at Birth and Powering Agriculture innovators and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges Explorations grantees who are working in global health and clean energy to increase the likelihood that their innovations will succeed.

Over 200 million people worldwide rely on fluoride-contaminated groundwater as their primary drinking water source. As a result, they are at risk of developing detrimental health effects such as irreversible, crippling skeletal fluorosis, mottled enamel, and anemia. Existing defluoridation technologies have proven to be cost-prohibitive and complex to operate and maintain in resource-constrained settings.

Global Water Labs is collaborating with established international mission-driven NGOs to pilot and commercialize the novel Scalable and Affordable Fluoride Removal (SAFR) process in low-income regions. They provide technical expertise to their field implementation partners with the aim of establishing effective material supply chains for water treatment and water quality testing. Millions of women around the world have unmet contraceptive needs that require more advanced training to administer. SubQ Assist has developed an assistive medical device that dramatically reduces the training required to administer subcutaneous contraceptive implants, an accepted and effective longterm form of contraception. The SubQ Assist acts like a template for a Community Healthcare Worker (CHW) to ensure that implants are inserted just underneath the skin and never too deeply. The team is focusing on moving their product to commercialization and is in the process of incorporating.

Current methods for breast cancer biopsy utilize expensive single-use devices that are not easily accessible in low-resource healthcare settings. Ithemba has created a novel, sterile-yet-reusable device that enables providers to offer minimally invasive biopsies at lower cost. The team conducted stakeholder interviews with doctors, nurses, and others involved in cancer care in Peru and South Africa in the summer of 2018, and gained valuable insights into how their device could be implemented in various hospitals and clinics. They have filed two provisional patents and have incorporated as an LLC.

Energy and aviation engine operators face costly maintenance issues and down-time because current monitoring practices are unreliable at high temperatures. Sensatek Propulsion Technology, Inc. is developing a wireless monitoring system that can withstand engines’ high combustion temperatures, providing near-real-time, accurate, and actionable data that can increase efficiencies and the life of engine parts. Today, Sensatek is continuing to work with Power Generation and Aerospace OEMs in becoming the choice for monitoring temperatures in engines. For the 4 million people suffering from palmar hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the hands, treatment is costly and time consuming. palmm created a convenient at-home treatment using a wearable electrical current delivery system that has been proven to safely deactivate sweat glands for up to several weeks. palmm enables people to avoid embarrassment and regain confidence in their daily lives. Hazel Technologies

Kinnos

Food stores discard a large portion of produce due to it spoiling before it reaches the shelf. Hazel Technologies’ FruitBrite controls produce ripeness and reduces spoilage, increasing the value and extending the shelf-life of fruit and vegetables. Using their patented technology, produce suppliers can actively manage and control ripening of high value crops through every stage of the supply chain, from harvest to delivery.

Transparent disinfectant bleach does not fully adhere to the protective materials making healthcare workers vulnerable to infectious diseases even when wearing personal protective equipment. At the height of the Ebola crisis in 2014, student team Kinnos created ‘Highlight®’ a powdered color additive for disinfectant bleach solutions. Highlight provides visualization of treated regions of the protective gear, eliminating uncertainty of complete coverage and improving disinfection.

Over the past year, Hazel’s achievements have continued to build. The company was awarded a $600K SBIR grant from USDA last fall and recently completed a $3.26 million Series A investment led by Chicagobased S2G Ventures. This investment will enable them to expand production capacity and meet growing customer demand. Hazel also recently successfully completed studies by a research team at Cornell University to validate their product efficacy with pears. The team has grown since its founding and recently added seven new full-time employees in sales/business development, research, and operations.

Their sales are growing as they expand their roster of partners and customers, with some exciting announcements expected in the coming months. VentureWell invested in Hazel Technologies in 2017.

Last year, Kinnos introduced a new product line in response to the needs of everyday clinical and hospital environments. The team developed an attachment for commercially available bleach wipe canisters, that are commonly used to kill robust pathogens such as C. difficile, MRSA, and norovirus. As a wipe is pulled through the canister attachment, it’s imbued with Highlight, allowing healthcare personnel to colorize a surface when disinfecting and ensure complete coverage. Kinnos was invited to showcase their new innovation for the hospital market, Highlight® Wipes, at the TechCrunch conference, Disrupt SF. The company plans to launch the new product in Fall 2018 and is currently piloting it with several U.S. hospitals. VentureWell invested in Kinnos in 2017.

IMPACT: Cadence is serving a growing market of “femtech”, which includes technologies to service women’s health in particular, a market that has historically been underserved or downplayed. By using Cadence, women can have more insight into the connection between their birth control habits and pregnancy risk.

Cadence ABOUT Of the 10 million U.S. women who rely on birth control pills each year, 800,000 become pregnant unintentionally, and 42% of those pregnancies are terminated. Efficacy of “the pill” relies heavily on a patient taking the pill at the exact same time each day, making it an imperfect method of birth control.

Missed pills reduce the average effectiveness of the birth control pill to 91% and lead to a 90x increased risk of pregnancy.

Cadence is a digital health startup focused on improving women’s reproductive health. Its first product is a hardware/software system designed to help women understand and optimize their birth control based on actual behavior. A smart case designed to hold the pill pack collects and syncs actual user behavior data to an app interface via bluetooth. Using the data, the app can track pill activity and provide real-time feedback, including providing users guidance when pills are missed or taken late and reminding users to take the pill. The case and app are compatible with any pill blister pack and are designed to be discreet.

MITO Material Solutions

In early 2018, VentureWell invested in MITO Material Solutions. MITO has raised over $500,000 in a round led by angels associated with Oklahoma State University Alumni.

ABOUT Composite materials have widespread uses and are becoming increasingly popular in manufacturing. A Boeing 787, for example, one of the most common commercial airplanes, is comprised of 80% composite material. Composites were designed to be superior alternatives to simple metals but the additional layers are often heavy and complex. Over time, fiberreinforced composites tend to fracture and delaminate under stress, causing severe mechanical failures during a machine’s lifetime.

MITO Material Solutions developed a revolutionary nano-filler additive that can toughen fiber-reinforced composites by 100%. The nano-additive solutions provider has developed a line of nano-additives, the “MITO T-Series,” that can be mixed with any epoxy or resin in composite manufacturing to toughen composite parts by 100% while decreasing the chances of mechanical failure by 80%. The flexibility afforded by the T-Series product line allows manufacturers of varying industries to choose which they value in an additive: a 100% increase in toughness, or up to a 35% decrease of materials needed. This allows MITO Materials to work with a wide variety of clients from RV, boating, aerospace, and manufacturing industries, helping their customers to manage costs, reduce waste, and increase the safety of their products.

MITO’s technology has the ability to reduce the carbon footprint in a few different ways:

1. Manufacuturers who adopt MITO and choose to lighten their product by using fewer fiber layers (fiberglass, carbon fiber) can reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

2. Additionally, if manufacturers choose to use MITO powered epoxy instead of carbon nanotubes, their main competitor, then they will see a fractional decrease in toxic carbon handling and gases emitted at manufacturing plants.

UPDATE: In January, the team was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to conduct additional research and develop their nanotechnology. The company is leveraging the SBIR funding and the funds from the investment to validate the technology with customers.

FACULTY & CHANGE AGENTS

Last year, we enhanced our faculty programming to help I&E educators pioneer new and better ways of engaging their students in the entrepreneurial process as well as promoting broader institutional change. We piloted new community engagement program strategies in addition to our regular faculty grants cycle. They included ways to encourage first-year students to participate in entrepreneurial innovation and enhance student venture development on campus. We also developed a special sustainabilty faculty grant opportunity to fund the creation or transformation of courses that promote sustainability in STEM entrepreneurship. During OPEN 2018, we co-hosted a dynamic workshop with our founding partner, The Lemelson Foundation, called Teaching Green Inventing, which highlighted and addressed needs within the faculty community for teaching sustainability. We also coordinated the Making Makerspaces workshop at Georgia Tech to help faculty measure the impact of their university makerspaces.

faculty grantee spotlight update A MULTI-STEP PROCESS TO DEVELOP COURSES/PROGRAMS FOR EARLYSTAGE INVENTOR AND INNOVATOR EDUCATION WITH AN EMPHASIS ON FIRST-YEAR STUDENT EXPERIENCES // Alizabeth Sanchez-Lopez This grant was an expansion of the university’s Pathways in Innovation program to develop I&E mindsets through awareness, spaces, and collaboration at the freshman level. One of the main gaps the team filled with this grant was the development of materials in the Spanish language. Because the majority of faculty and first-year students at the university are not fluent in English, the grantees used part of their funding to develop a manual with 10 experiential learning activities that align the Freshman Seminar Course with I&E competencies.

As a result, 32 Freshman Seminar instructors from all disciplines attended the the university’s first I&E Faculty Training, and 76 teams participated in the December 2017 Freshman Idea Contest, more than doubling the participation of the previous year. The first student-led innovation and entrepreneurship workshop, designed specifically for first-year students, was also developed by the University Innovation Fellows. A total of 27 first-year students attended the workshop.

NYU HEALTHCARE INNOVATION CHALLENGE // Frank Rimalovski This grant supported a new healthcare innovation challenge at NYU, co-developed by the NYU Entrepreneurial Institute and the NYU School of Medicine. The challenge, called the Healthcare Makerthon, offers workshops, mentorship, hands-on support, and experiential learning to solve pressing issues in healthcare.

By the end of the grant period, NYU had grown and maintained a healthcare entrepreneurial ecosystem that taught entrepreneurship to 37 teams and brought together a vibrant community of 400 students and professionals, and over 80 mentors. The grant supported over 16 cross-disciplinary NYU teams in their continued venture development.

VENTURES IN SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP (VISE) // Scott Shrake A new interdisciplinary, service-learning program that combines human-centered design with entrepreneurship to provide solutions to real-world problems facing society’s most vulnerable populations. The program pairs undergraduate student teams with global organizations to address challenges in sustainability, clean technology, and healthcare, and enables the formation of socially minded student ventures to design, develop, and deploy new technologies.

PARTNERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS IN MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN UGANDA // Andrew Rollins An expansion to a collaborative program between CWRU and Makerere University in Uganda focused on healthcare technology design that will develop a sustainable design program. The new 4-week program will provide student teams with interdisciplinary, experiential learning in sustainable design, entrepreneurship, and design for low-resource settings.

ELEVATING IMPACT LAB // Jacen Greene An expansion of the Elevating Impact Lab from a successful pilot into a permanent offering integrated into curricular and co-curricular programming. The Elevating Impact Lab is a multi-day, team-based, entrepreneurship ideation event in which student teams employ sustainable design and social innovation best practices to solve a specific social or environmental problem.

DEVELOPING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET IN FIRST-YEAR WOMEN STUDENTS // Kenneth J. McLeod A first-year course sequence focused on helping women undergraduate students develop an entrepreneurial mindset. The goal of the program is to increase the number of women involved in entrepreneurial activities on campus, leading to stronger interest among women in launching a venture upon graduation.

ENERGY HACKATHONS AS A GATEWAY TO INTEREST IN ENERGY INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP // Dr. Deborah Stine A new hackathon series to introduce first-year students to energy-related innovation and entrepreneurship. The program will increase the number of students participating in energy innovation programs, and serve as a gateway to building an energy innovation and entrepreneurship community across campus.

THE RIVER HAWK EXPERIENCE: INCREASING STEM STUDENT SUCCESS THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION // Steven Tello This new project is designed to encourage STEM student success and retention. The goals of the project include increased participation of STEM students in entrepreneurship education and activities, increased student retention and graduation rates, and an improved understanding of the value that STEM students place on experiential entrepreneurship education.

In 2018, we expanded our work to enhance entrepreneurial ecosystems in the U.S. and around the world. In partnership with the U.S. Department of State and the Angel Resource Institute, we launched the GIST Investors program with three initial engagements in Colombia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This work helps increase opportunities for science and technology innovators within those countries to secure critical early-stage capital.

In March, over 250 representatives from across the I&E spectrum gathered in Austin, TX for our 22nd annual OPEN conference. The event offered a wealth of informative sessions and time to network with a friendly and engaging group of attendees interested in moving the I&E field forward. We also partnered with multiple institutional change communities. That included working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Frontier Set network to dramatically increase student success and erase attainment gaps, and the National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRC) program to assess the research and innovation outcomes for 26 centers.

GIST investors convened with four workshops in three countries: Colombia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The programming was supported by 10 partner investor and entrepreneurial organizations and trained over 150 angel and venture fund investors.

Our annual OPEN conference is a core component of our network and ecosystem building efforts. In March 2018, over 250 representatives from across the I&E spectrum gathered in Austin, TX to share stories, start new collaborations, and learn best practices in the evolving field of technology entrepreneurship education.

The weekend kicked off with the much-anticipated Austin Innovation Tour, which offered a behind-thescenes look at the city’s burgeoning startup community - a first for our conference. Another highlight, the Sustainable Practice Impact Award luncheon, celebrated the work of Professor Kiersten Muenchinger and the University of Oregon for their achievements in sustainability education. The luncheon also featured keynote speaker, Thomas Kalil, former Deputy Director for Technology and Innovation for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

We capped off the conference with OPEN Minds, our annual showcase of top VentureWell E-Teams that allows student entrepreneurs to pitch their innovations and receive feedback from faculty and funders. Team Illumi-Nite and Edu-LIGHTER took home the first place prize of $3,000. The joint team also won first and second place in the VentureWell-supported Invent for the Planet design challenge hosted by Texas A&M University.

GIST 2018

VentureWell supports the delivery of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative, which empowers young innovators through networking, skills building, mentoring, and access to financing to develop startup solutions that address economic and development challenges.

A new addition to GIST programming, GIST Investors, convened investors in Colombia, Indonesia, and Malaysia to provide expert advice to active venture capitalists as well as active and potential angel investors on topics related to science and technology investing in emerging economies. The program aims to enhance the ability of investors to provide capital to science and technology entrepreneurs and build stronger entrepreneurial ecosystems.

VentureWell partnered with ANGIN, Indonesia’s first and largest investment network committed to building the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and empowering female investors, for a training on “Gender Lens Investing.” In addition to covering the fundamentals of angel investing, due diligence, and portfolio management, the training focused on the research, risk, and impact of investing in women, how to empower women investors, and case studies of successful science and technology women-led startups.
