Thrissur Town was developed by Sakthan Thampuran in the late 18th Century. The inital developed town was about 10sq.km and extends over 7 wards of the present day Thrissur Town.

Trissivaperur(Thrissur) was one of the 32 Namboothiri Gramams of Kerala. The name was derived from the 3 exiting Shiva temples.

Sakthan Thampuran on ascending the throne of Kingdom Cochin shifted the capital from Thripunithara to Trissivaperur (Thrissur), abolished the power of Namboothiri community and developed a hillock by clearing 60 acres of land around the main temple.

Four ponds were created on 4 sides of the maidan for water drainage and irrigation purposes.

Road width < 10m 10m > 10m

As we look at the overall site, it is understood that majorit y of the roads are less than 10m in width and causes congestion at the nodes.

The Town Hall - Museum Rd Stretch experiences varying widths.

The Ring rd being a one-way road does not face major congestion issues.

At the first junction of the town hall stretch, the road widths vary between 7.5-8m.

As we move towards the Thrissur Zoo & Museum area, the road width increases to 10m.

At the third junction the road width increases to 15m and adjoins to a one-way Ring road.

The traffic congestion experienced at each junctions are different due to varying road width and traffic flow.

The first junction experiences the most the most congestion due to comparatively lower road width and higher traffic flow.

The second junction experiences moderate congestion as the road width is medium and the traffic generated at this node is easily cleared. thi junction experiences the least congestion as the road width has increased The third and adjoins to a one-way Ring road and Palace road with medium road width.

When we look at footpath in site, the ring road, town hall front has proper built footpath.

Whereas, areas near the Zoo and Museum neither have a built footpath nor have enough space for pedestrians.

People walk on the road edges. Most of the area for footpath around the Zoo region is utilised for on-street parking, street vendors, etc., and is covered with wild plants which hinder the pedestrain movement.

CULTURAL CORE ZONE - North east side of the Swaraj Round is concentrated with cultural and tourist oriented places which can Transport and Communication be treated as a cultural based development area. It can also be treated as a silent zone/noise free zone in the core area.

The site is located in Chembukkavu, the 12th ward of Thrissur Municipal Corporation.

At ward level, about 50% of the area is allotted for residential purposes and about 20% for public and semi public use.

Museum road has been proposed to a width of 25m and Chembukkavu Road to a width of 10m.

Whereas in the selected site, about 60% of the area is allotted for public and semi public use and only 6% is allotted for residential purposes.

Currently the public and semipublic uses are retained as such and the proposal is partially achieved. The Thrissur Zoo is being relocated to Puthur and the vacant plot is recieving different proposals.
