approaches to increase interaction frequency for the elderly

aging-friendly community
physicalgroup-based activities
Research has consistently shown that intergenerational interaction, such as daily engagement between the elderly and children—not only enhances emotional well-being but also contributes to cognitive vitality and physical health in older adults. Simultaneously, children benefit from the wisdom, patience, and life experience of their elders, fostering empathy, respect, and cultural continuity.
To provide spaces and programs that encourage meaningful social interaction between the elderly and children in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment.
To enhance the quality of life and health of the elderly through adaptive and interactive physical environments that support active involvement in daily activities.
To build a supportive intergenerational community by integrating elderly housing and children’s education center functions within a single, unified facility.
Creating adaptive and interactive spaces through the design approach of an Intergenerational Mixed-Use Facility: Elderly Housing and Children Education Center, which fosters intergenerational social interaction to enhance the physical and psychological well-being of the elderly.

The infrastructure surrounding the site is still under development.
There is a lack of natural vegetation to buffer sunlight, which needs to be addressed during the design process.
Access from the site to destinations within Kota Baru Parahyangan relies on private vehicles.
The site is an empty plot with no existing buildings.
It is easily accessible from two major cities via public transportation or private vehicles.
It is adjacent to several public facilities, including healthcare and commercial amenities.
There are no sensory issues such as unpleasant odors, as there is no waste surrounding the site.
The site offers potential views of green open spaces, which can serve as restorative elements.
The terrain is relatively flat, allowing easier mobility for the elderly.

the children education center’s classrooms are equipped with opened built-in locker windows, allowing natural light and ventilation to seep in. it’s also designed with a second skin facade that act as a buffer for the sunlight.
the children education center’s second floor corridor’s window is made into a seating/reading area by installing a shelf under the window sill that can be seated on. the wall divider is also made to be a place where the users can rest their head on.

the multipurpose hall located on the first floor is made accessible from both functions, with foldable doors & windows facing towards both courtyards. to accommodate various functions, it’s also equipped with foldable wall partitions that may be opened or closed whenever needed.
when opened, the wall partitions help divide the large hall into smaller rooms that may be functioned for various activities.
for example, when used for story- telling workshops the small space feels more intimate with a view towards both courtyards.
the children will then be given cushions while the elderly will be given chairs as they have mobility limitations.
