White House poised to release secret pages from 9/11 inquiry DEB RIECHMANN Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will likely soon release at least part of a 28-page secret chapter from a congressional inquiry into 9/11 that may shed light on possible Saudi connections to the attackers.

The documents, kept in a secure room in the basement of the Capitol, contain information from the joint congressional inquiry into “specific sources of foreign support for some of the Sept. 11 hijackers while they were in the United States.”

“I hope that decision is to honor the American people and make it available,” Graham told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “The most important unanswered question of 9/11 is, did these 19 people conduct this very sophisticated plot alone, or were they supported?”

Tim Roemer, who was a member of both the joint congressional inquiry as well as the 9/11 Commission and has read the secret chapter three times, described the 28 pages as a “preliminary police report.”

“There were clues. There were allegations. There were witness reports. There was evidence about the hijackers, about people they met with — all kinds of different things that the 9/11 Commission was then tasked with reviewing and investigating,” the former Democratic congressman from Indiana said Friday.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were citizens of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government says it has been “wrongfully and morbidly accused of complicity” in the attacks, is fighting extremists and working to clamp down on their funding channels. Still, the Saudis have long said that they would welcome declassification of the 28 pages because it would “allow us to respond to any allegations in a clear and credible manner.”

The pages were withheld from the 838-page report on the orders of President George W. Bush, who said the release could divulge intelligence sources and methods. Still, protecting U.S.-Saudi diplomatic relations also was believed to have been a factor.

Ben Rhodes, President Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser, said Obama asked National Intelligence Director James Clapper to review the papers for possible declassification.

“When that’s done we’d expect that there will be some degree of declassification that provides more

information,” Rhodes told reporters in Riyadh last week, where Obama met with King Salman and other Saudi leaders. The White House says the 28 pages did not come up during discussions.

Neither the congressional inquiry nor the subsequent 9/11 Commission found any evidence that the Saudi government or senior Saudi officials knowingly supported those who orchestrated the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

But Graham, the relatives of victims and some lawmakers think there is reason to further probe possible Saudi links.

Roemer said many questions remain about the roles of Fahad al Thumairy, an official at the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles who allegedly helped two of the hijackers find housing and transportation after they arrived in Southern California.

Al Thumairy was later denied entry into the United States in May 2003 after the State Department alleged that he might be involved in terrorist activity. Roemer also wants to know more about Omar al Bayoumi, who was strongly suspected of being a Saudi spy and was alleged to have been helpful to the hijackers.

“We did not discover ...

Saudi government involvement at the highest level of the 9/11 attacks,” Roemer said. But he added: “We certainly did not exonerate the Saudis. ... Saudi was a fertile ground for fundraising for al-Qaida. Some of these issues continue to be problems today. That’s why we need to continue to get to the bottom of this.”

An Internet site pushing to get the documents released, 28pages.org, points to another document declassified in July 2015 that outlined ways in which the commission could examine possible Saudi links.

That 47-page document lists several pages of individuals of interest and suggests questions that could be pursued. One name is suspected al-Qaida operative Ghassan al Sharbi.q

Despite all that, Obama said, “the majority of people still favor trade. They still recognize, on balance, that it’s a good idea.”

“If you look at the benefits to the United States or to Germany of free trade around the world, it is indisputable that it has made our economies stronger,” Obama said.

The president said he was confident negotiations on the trans-Atlantic trade deal could be completed by the end of year, with ratification to follow. And he said that once the U.S. presidential primary season is over and politics settle down, the trans-Pacific pact, awaiting ratification, can “start moving forward” in Congress.

Obama is pushing to conclude negotiations on the European deal before he leaves office, so that “next president can pick that up rapidly and get that done,” he told the BBC in an interview broadcast Sunday.

But it’s not certain that the next president would pick up where Obama leaves off on trade. The trans-Atlantic pact has not been a top issue in the campaign to choose Obama’s successor. And both leading candidates — Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump — oppose the Asia-Pacific trade pact for its potential impact on American jobs and wages.

Obama isn’t alone in facing opposition on trade.

His host and partner on the daylong campaign, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, also is under pressure from critics who claim the trans-Atlantic deal would erode environmental standards and consumer protections.

Throughout the day, Obama and Merkel stressed their alignment on trade, as well as other matters.

At a press conference, Obama made a strong public show of support for her handling of the migrant issue, saying she was “on the right side of history on this.”

Her decision to allow the resettlement in Germany of thousands fleeing violence in Syria and other Mideast conflict zones has created an angry domestic backlash. Merkel recently helped European countries reach a deal with Turkey to ease the flow, but she and the other leaders are now under pressure to revisit it.

Obama said Merkel was “giving voice, I think, to the kinds of principles that bring people together rather than divide them.”

But Obama would not go so far as to back her support for establishing a “safe zone” in Syrian territory, saying that would be difficult to put in place.

“As a practical matter, sadly, it is very difficult to see how it would operate short of us essentially being willing to militarily take over a big chunk of that country,” he said. “And that requires a big military commitment.”

Merkel has endorsed the notion of creating areas that could provide safe haven for the thousands of migrants fleeing the violence, and said such zones would improve access to humanitarian aid. She insisted the proposal would not require outside intervention, saying safe areas should be part of the Geneva peace negotiations that involve the Syrian government and moderate opposition groups.

Obama — looking to project a united front with a leader he referred to as his “trusted partner” while she called him “Dear Barack” — said he did support using the peace talks to ultimately create safe areas controlled by the moderate opposition, and on that “there’s no space between us.”q

Republican front-runner Donald Trump looked ahead to Tuesday’s contests in five northeastern states where he’s poised to do well and to a foreign policy speech later in the week. His main rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, meanwhile, abandoned the states voting Tuesday and instead campaigned in Indiana, which votes May 3.

“If Secretary Clinton is the nominee — and we’re not giving this thing up, we’re going all the way to California — but if she is the nominee, I would hope that she puts together the strongest progressive agenda,” Sanders said on ABC TV’s “This Week” before courting voters in Rhode Island’s capital city of Providence.

Clinton hoped Tuesday’s contests in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland and Delaware would mark a turning point in her quest for the Democratic nomination. Victories in four or five states would all but cripple Sanders’ White House bid.

The former secretary of state went to two Philadelphia church services attended largely by AfricanAmericans ahead of the primary in Pennsylvania, Tuesday’s top delegate prize. She declined to attack her Democratic rival by name in the morning appearance and a subsequent stop in Bridgeport, Connecticut, focusing on the Republican candidates.

Clinton charged that rhetoric from Trump and Ted Cruz is “not only offensive, it’s dangerous.”

“The people who run for office on the tea party or whatever else and say they will never compromise, they are basically denying the fundamental tenets of democracy,” Clinton said.

ger after a triumph in last week’s New York primary, stood to effectively lock up the nomination on Tuesday. The five states together offer 384 delegates, and Clinton was expected to win most of them, putting her closer to gaining the trove that would put her closer to security the 2,238 delegates needed to secure the nomination at the Democratic national convention in July.

With 172 delegates at stake Tuesday on the Republican side, Trump could take a significant step toward his party’s delegate majority with the dominant performance that many polls predict. His rivals, Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, have been mathematically eliminated from earning the necessary 1,237 delegates and are instead trying to block Trump from the majority to force a contested national convention in July in which delegates would be free to turn from Trump to other candidates after the first ballot.

Cruz made no mention of Tuesday’s elections as he campaigned Sunday afternoon in Indiana, targeting Trump’s brash tone instead.

“We’re facing a choice.

Do we want to be behind a campaign that is based on yelling, screaming and cursing and insulting?” Cruz asked.

Trump was set to campaign in Maryland Sunday as a senior adviser charged that Cruz is “going to lose all five states and probably finish third in most of them” on Tuesday.

The adviser, Paul Manafort, said the billionaire businessman’s campaign, not the candidate, was evolving as the general election neared, an attempt to clarify his recent comments to the Republican National Committee that Trump has been “playing a part” onstage and would soon start to display “more depth ... the real person,” in new settings. That includes working with such Washington stalwarts as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — even as Trump casts himself as the ultimate outsider. q

Sprawling corruption case with humble beginnings roils NYC JAKE PEARSON TOM HAYS Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — After a successful attack on corruption in New York’s state government, the hard-charging federal prosecutor in Manhattan appears to have set his sights on New York City.

Over the past few weeks, a series of loosely related public corruption investigations coordinated by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara have spilled into public view, with targets including high-ranking New York Police Department officials, the union representing city jail guards, and the political fundraising activities of several people with ties to New York City’s mayor.

Already an embarrassment to the nation’s largest police department, it remains unclear whether the widening probes could do damage to City Hall.

So far, nine police officials, including four deputy chiefs, have been transferred or stripped of their guns and badges as internal affairs detectives and FBI agents examine whether officers accepted gifts and trips from businessmen in exchange for police escorts, special parking privileges and other favors.

And in recent weeks, the evolving probe has turned to campaign financing practices that have long been scrutinized by good government groups.

An animal welfare group that has been lobbying Mayor Bill de Blasio to ban carriage horses from city streets confirmed Friday that it had received a subpoena from federal prosecutors seeking documents related to its fundraising efforts for a nonprofit group created to advance the mayor’s policy agenda.

After a criminal referral to prosecutors from the state Board of Elections office, other subpoenas sought records related to hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations solicited by the mayor’s campaign that were rerouted to upstate Democrats running for the state Senate.

Separately, federal agents operated a wiretap that captured the conversations of two businessmen, Jona Rechnitz and Jeremy Reichberg, who were friends with two top police officials and served on de Blasio’s inaugural committee in 2013 and contributed to his campaign, two law enforcement officials said.

Investigators want to know whether they have been offered any official favors in exchange for donations, according to the officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss an ongoing case.

De Blasio, a Democrat, has not been accused of any specific wrongdoing and his campaign organization has said it operated within the laws. His campaign lawyer, Laurence Laufer, on Sunday wrote a letter, which was obtained

by The Associated Press, to the Board of Elections, accusing the group of selective, politically-motivated enforcement and leaking confidential investigative material to the media.

The developments have created the perception that a city that was thought to have rid itself of everyday corruption might be slipping back into the bad old days.

“If you can find a corrupt mayor of New York City, holy moly, that’s a big prize,” said Jennifer Rodgers, a former federal prosecutor who now heads the Center for the Advancement of Public Integrity at Columbia Law School.

Several parts of the multifaceted probe had their origins in an FBI investigation of suspicious financial transactions involving a Harlem liquor store.

Campaign financing wasn’t on FBI agents’ minds in 2013 when they were alerted to a series of large transfers and deposits in multiple bank accounts held by a small wholesale liquor business in Harlem, the law enforcement officials said.

Feds deciding if coal-export project violates tribal rights PHUONG LE Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) — For centuries, Lummi tribal fishermen have harvested, dug up clams and fished for salmon in the tidelands and waters of northwest Washington state.

Now, the tribe says a proposed $700 million project to build the nation’s largest coal-export terminal threatens that way of life.

The tribe last year asked federal regulators to deny permits for project, saying it would interfere with the tribe’s treaty-reserved fishing rights.

The Gateway Pacific Terminal, a venture between SSA Marine and Cloud Peak Energy, would handle up to 54 million metric tons of dry bulk commodities, mostly coal, at a deep water port at Cherry Point. Coal would be shipped by train from Montana and Wyoming for export to Asia.

If the Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency overseeing the permitting process, finds that the proposed terminal would disrupt the tribe’s rights to fish in its traditional areas, it won’t issue permits. A decision is expected this week.

“The Corps should honor the trust responsibility and deny the permit,” said Timothy Ballew, chairman of the coastal tribe, which has more than 5,000 members and one of the largest tribal fishing fleets in the country.

“Our fishermen have fished there since time immemorial.”

Seattle-based SSA Marine says the Corps should find that project poses less than a minimal impact on the tribe’s fishing rights. The company contends that the most productive fishing for the tribe does not occur near the wharf. “They didn’t provide real evidence that they fish there a lot,” senior

vice president Bob Watters said. The company also believes an environmental review that began in 2013 should be completed.

Earlier this month, however, project developers asked state and federal regulators to temporarily halt that environmental review while the Corps heard the Lummi’s request.

The terminal has become a lightning rod in the debate over whether the Pacific Northwest should become a gateway for exporting fossil fuels to Asia.

Environmental groups strongly oppose the proposal, worried about the greenhouse gases pollutants produced by burning

coal and other issues such as increased train and vessel traffic. Meanwhile, some business and labor groups say it will create hundreds of jobs and generate tax revenue.

The Crow Nation of Montana, which has an option for ownership in the new terminal, backs the project as vital to its future. Lawmakers in Montana have led efforts to block the Corps from denying a permit until the environmental review is done.

If the federal agency denies the permit on the grounds of fishing rights, it wouldn’t be the first time.

“It’s fairly common,” said Robert Anderson, a Uni-

versity of Washington law professor who directs the school’s Native American Law Center. In 1996, the Corps denied a permit for salmon farm west of Lummi Island because it would interfere with tribe fishing rights. A federal court upheld that decision.

When federal agencies like the Corps issues permits, “they have an obligation to protect treaty resources.

The Corps will have to take into account whether there will be an adverse effect on Indian treaty rights,” Anderson said.

The proposal would bring up to 487 vessels to a proposed three-berth wharf in an industrial zone about 100 miles north of Seattle.

The company says the site presents a unique location, partly because it can accommodate the largest ships in naturally deep water. The tribe says increased vessel traffic would disrupt fishing practices, as well as expose the region to potential oil spills, boat collisions, pollution and other problems.

Project developers say they would take measures to avoid or minimize impacts to tribal fishing, including setting up a system to let fisherman know about vessel positions and not allowing tug or tow operations due to tribal concerns about lost fishing gear. q

Authorities: Teen shoots 2 outside prom before cop kills him

ANTIGO, Wis. (AP) — An 18-year-old man opened fire with a high-powered rifle outside of a high school prom in northern Wisconsin, wounding two students before a police officer who was in the parking lot fatally shot him, authorities said Sunday.

Investigators did not say whether they believe the two students were specifically targeted or discuss a possible motive for the shooting. But a school administrator said it appeared that the gunman — identified by police as Jakob E. Wagner — intended to go into the dance and start shooting randomly.

The two prom-goers who were wounded were shot as they exited the building, according to Eric Roller, the chief of police in Antigo, a community of about 8,000 people roughly 150 miles north of Milwaukee.

“Officers were in the parking lot patrolling the activities and heard the shots and an officer immediately fired upon the shooter, stopping the threat,” Roller said. He said the gunman was then taken into custody. Wagner died at a hospital. In a statement, the Unified School District of Antigo said Wagner approached the school with a high-powered rifle and a large ammunition clip. The district said the “quick actions” taken by police and district staff to secure the building “prevented what might have otherwise been a disaster of unimaginable proportions.”

Interim district administrator Donald B. Childs told The Associated Press on Sunday that it appears Wagner intended to go into the building and shoot at people at the dance.

“We have no reason to believe at this point it was targeting anybody specifically,” Childs said, adding that the shooting outside the entrance happened “from some distance.”

The female victim was treated and released and the male victim was undergoing surgery for injuries that weren’t life-threatening, police said. Childs said the wounded boy, who was shot in the leg, attended the high school but that his date, who was grazed in the shooting, was from out of state.

Gov. Scott Walker praised the police response to the shooting, saying in a statement the actions of the Antigo Police Department “undoubtedly saved lives.”

Friends said Wagner was a senior at Antigo High School in 2015, but Childs said he did not graduate with his classmates and was continuing to work on his diploma. He said the school of about 750 students will have counselors available when classes resume Monday.

Friends expressed shock that Wagner was the suspect.

“For him to do that, some-

thing just isn’t right. He was a good kid,” said Dakotta Mills, who said he had known Wagner since sixth grade and considered him a “foster brother.”q

Man arrested, charged with threatening to bomb Trump rally WATERBURY, Connecticut (AP) — A 20-year-old man is facing charges after authorities say he tweeted out a bomb threat during a Donald Trump rally in Connecticut on Saturday.

Connecticut State Police say the U.S. Secret Service contacted them Saturday afternoon after they say Sean Morkys posted on Twitter, “Is someone going to bomb the trump rally or am I going to have to?”

Police say that tweet was followed by another warning a friend to have his family members leave the rally so they wouldn’t get hurt. The Republican presidential hopeful appeared in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Saturday.

Egypt leader urges people to defend state ahead of protests BRIAN ROHAN Associated Press CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s president urged citizens to defend the state and its institutions from the “forces of evil” on Sunday, a day before planned demonstrations against his policies, including the transfer of two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia.

In a widely televised speech, Abdel-Fattah elSissi insisted on the need for stability in the Arab world’s most populous country, saying that attempts to degrade it “won’t be successful” if Egypt stands united.

“We must protect these institutions because these mean the state,” he said. “I am reiterating to the Egyp-

tian people this is the responsibility of all of us, for us to protect this security and stability.”

Earlier this month, thousands marched against el-Sissi’s policies in the largest demonstrations since he assumed office in 2014.

The protesters, including politicians and activists, called for more demonstrations on Monday, a national holiday that commemorates the withdrawal of the last Israeli troops from the Sinai Peninsula in 1982 under the Camp David peace agreement.

The armed forces will deploy at vital sites Monday to prevent saboteurs from taking advantage of these protests, Egypt’s military spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said Sunday.

El-Sissi’s comments raise the possibility of large-scale counter-demonstrations that could turn violent, in addition to a potentially harsh police crackdown — especially if the demonstrators attempt to reach the heavily policed Tahrir Square.

Protests are essentially banned in Egypt under laws passed after el-Sissi led the military overthrow of his elected but divisive Islamist predecessor, Mohammed Morsi, in 2013.

A petition titled “Egypt is not for sale,” which calls for a reversal of the decision on the islands and supports the protests, was

signed by more than 300 Egyptian novelists, lawyers and activists, and several calls have been made on social media for Monday’s demonstrations to converge on Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 2011 revolt against Mubarak.

The Muslim Brotherhood said in a Sunday statement it supports the protests and is calling on people to join them.

Since Friday, security troops have been out in force, with armored personnel carriers stationed at key traffic areas, while security agents have rounded up dozens of activists, journalists, and lawyers from their homes and cafes in downtown Cairo.

Also Sunday, Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar met with officials to review preparations to confront any attempts to “break the law,” the ministry said in a statement.

It quoted Abdel-Ghaffar as saying that the security apparatus would be ready to address any action that could disturb public security with “the utmost firmness and decisiveness,” urging citizens to ignore calls to create chaos and drive a wedge between the people and police.q

Clooney presented the first Aurora Prize, an award recognizing an individual’s work to advance humanitarian causes, to Marguerite Barankitse, who saved thousands of lives and cared for orphans and refugees amid the Burundi civil war. Clooney has been a prominent voice in favor of countries recognizing the killings as genocide, which the U.S. hasn’t done.

Before he presented the award, Clooney reminded the audience that Adolf Hitler once reportedly said: “Who remembers Armenia?” Clooney said: “The whole world.”

President Barack Obama declined on Friday to refer to the 1915 massacre as genocide, breaking a key campaign promise as his presidency nears an end.

Obama called the massacre the first mass atrocity of the 20th century and a tragedy that mustn’t be repeated.

Clooney, along with Armenian leaders and international dignitaries, earlier on Sunday attended a service at a hilltop memorial in the capital, Yerevan, led by Armenian church leader Catholicos Karekin II to commemorate the massacre victims.

In Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a message commemorating Armenians who died in 1915, without making any reference to the massacre.

In a statement that was read during a ceremony at an Armenian church in Istanbul, Erdogan said he welcomed the commemoration “to share the grief endured by the Ottoman Armenians, as well as to honor their memories.”

Erdogan criticized efforts “to politicize history through a bitter rhetoric of hate and enmity and strive to alienate the two neighboring nations.”

In a commemorative speech, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Sunday mentioned a recent flare-up of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, which is officially a part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of local ethnic Armenian forces and the Armenian military since a separatist war ended in 1994.

He lashed out at Azerbaijan for what he described as plans to drive all Armenians away from the region and pledged to protect Armenians living there.

Fighting earlier this month marked the worst violence since 1994 and both sides on Sunday reported the shelling of their positions by enemy fire.

India revokes passport of tycoon who owes $1 billion NIRMALA GEORGE Associated Press NEW DELHI (AP) — India on Sunday revoked the passport of a flamboyant Indian businessman accused of fleeing to London in March while owing more than a billion dollars to Indian banks.

External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said the decision to revoke Vijay Mallya’s passport was taken considering the evidence gathered by India’s Enforcement Directorate, which has been investigating the tycoon’s massive debts.

The ministry was also consulting legal experts on seeking Mallya’s deportation from the UK to face charges of money laundering and financial irregulari-

ties.

The opposition Congress party has accused the government of letting Mallya flee India while being pursued by banks for debts totaling 90 billion rupees ($1.3 billion). The government denies the charge.

India’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley defended Mallya’s departure, saying the banks had not initiated the legal process to prevent him from leaving by the time he boarded the flight out of India.

The Enforcement Directorate told the government that Mallya was not cooperating with the investigators, after he ignored three dates when he was summoned to give evidence to them.

Report: Mexican police tortured suspects in students’ case

MARK STEVENSON MARIA VERZAAssociated Press MEXICO CITY (AP) — There is strong evidence that Mexican police tortured some of the key suspects arrested in the disappearance of 43 students, according to a report released Sunday by an outside group of experts.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights expert group says that a study of 17 of the approximately 110 suspects arrested in the case showed signs of beatings, including, in some cases, dozens of bruises, cuts and scrapes.

One suspect said he was nearly asphyxiated with a plastic bag, and medical studies showed another had been slapped on the ears so hard his eardrums broke and his ears bled.

The Mexican government recently released documents suggesting investigations had been opened against police and military personnel, but authorities have not answered requests about whether anyone has been arrested or charged.

The allegations of torture could endanger any chance of convictions in one of the highest-profile human rights cases in Mexican history, es-

pecially because the government’s version of events — that corrupt police handed the students over to drug gang members who killed them and burned their bodies at a trash dump — hangs in large part on the testimony of some drug gunmen who now say they were tortured into confessing.

“It is a lie the way they said they caught us,” Patricio Reyes Landa said in testimony made public by the experts’ report. “They went into the house, beating and kicking.

They hauled me aboard a vehicle, they blindfolded me, tied my feet and hands, they began beating me again and gave me electric shocks, they put a rag over my nose and poured water on it. They gave me shocks on the inside of my mouth and my testicles. They put a bag over my face so I couldn’t breathe. It went on

The group complained the government was slow to deliver some of the evidence it had asked for; it criticized government prosecutor’s investigations as flawed and incomplete, and suggested that the government wanted to stick to its version, without investigating possible involvement by federal police and the army.

For example, the report said, the roadblocks set up on local highways around the city of Iguala on the night of the disappearances were far more extensive than previously thought. The roadblocks were apparently coordinated by the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel to trap rivals; the gang may have thought the students were part of a rival cartel. q

Charley Hoffman birdies final hole to win Texas Open SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Charley Hoffman made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the Valero Texas Open on Sunday for his fourth PGA Tour victory.

The 39-year-old Hoffman closed with a 3-under 69 at TPC San Antonio for a onestroke victory over Patrick Reed. Hoffman finished at 12-under 276 and earned $1,116,000.

“This was my hardest one,” Hoffman said after a vigorous fist-pump and drill-team leg kick when the winning putt fell at 18. “Grabbing that lead and holding on to it — it’s tough to keep the pedal down and give yourself birdie opportunities and win golf tournaments.”

Playing alongside Hoffman, Reed also birdied the par5 18th for a 69. He missed birdie putts inside 8 feet on the par-3 16th and par-4 17th.

“Today I was missing a lot of short putts, so I’m shocked I even had a chance,” Reed said. Reed, who was born in San Antonio, put the pressure on Hoffman with a tap-in birdie at the 18th after reaching the fringe on the 595-yard hole in two. His shot to the green came from the left-hand rough, and had to clear an oak tree and creek in front of the green.

Hoffman followed by hitting his third shot from a greenside bunker to set up his birdie.

“It was about a cup outside left,” Hoffman said.

“I said to myself ‘Let’s finish this here. Let’s not play anymore.’”

Hoffman also won the 2007 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, 2010 Deutsche Bank Championshipand 2015 OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

Reed missed a bending, right-to-left putt from 7 feet that could have tied Hoffman at 16, and missed a straighter putt from about the same distance on the next hole.

“I thought they were in,” Reed said. “I put the pressure as much as I could on Charley. It shows he was ready to win a golf tournament, and I had way too many mistakes to close one out.”

Hoffman took advantage of the misses.

“I definitely dodged bullets there,” Hoffman said. “I made my par saves and he missed his birdies, so I was able to keep my momentum.”

Piller birdied the 12th with a 14-foot putt to take a twoshot advantage over Reed and Hoffman.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Rafael Nadal beat defending champion Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-5 to win the Barcelona Open for the ninth time on Sunday, equaling Guillermo Vilas’ record of 49 career clay-court titles.

Nadal added this title to his trophy from Monte Carlo last week as the 14-time Grand Slam winner regains form on his favorite surface ahead of next month’s French Open.

“I’m very happy because besides this being one of the most important tournaments that I have won, this is another week that I am playing very well,” Nadal said. “These have been two fantastic weeks, weeks I have been striving for for a long time.”

Nishikori had won the tournament for the last two years after early exits by Nadal.

In an entertaining clash of the two top-seeded players, Nadal proved more decisive under pressure, saving seven of eight break chances in the first set while converting the two chances he got.

The Spaniard then bettered second-seeded Nishikori through several superb rallies in a back-and-forth second set to win key points and claim his 69th career title in his 101st final.

“I was playing against the No. 6 player in the world, and if you don’t play at your best you aren’t going to win,” the fifth-ranked Nadal said.

Besides matching Vilas’ Open Era milestone from the 1970s and 1980s, Nadal added Barcelona to his list of tournaments he has won a record nine times, along with Roland Garros and Monte Carlo. No other player has won a tourna-

ment nine times.

“This is truly special, I don’t know if it is repeatable,” Nadal said about his records. “If I have done it, it is possible, but it will be truly difficult. I have won titles nine times, and won so many titles on clay and in tough tournaments. I am very satisfied for Barcelona to join this group of nine.”

After losing to Fabio Fognini in the round of 16 last year, Nadal blamed his poor forehand. A year later, all Nadal’s power was back on display, driving forehand strokes past Nishikori when it really mattered.

Playing near their best, both top-10 players never let the other settle in while serving.

Level at 3-3 in the first set, Nishikori had three break points, but Nadal saved them all by winning five straight points.

Nadal earned a second break to claim the first set when the Spaniard won with a shot which clipped the top of the net.

Nishikori immediately responded by rallying from 0-40 down to break Nadal’s first service game of the second set.

Nadal answered with a hard-fought game — which included two superb rallies won by the home favorite at the net — to recover the break.

Nishikori got back in the match after Nadal misjudged a ball that he thought was going wide when he could have smashed it. The ball fell in, and Nishikori broke Nadal with an unreachable drop shot for 4-3.

Nishikori then landed another risky drop shot to save a championship point and make it 5-5, but Nadal claimed victory two games later when the Japanese sent the ball into the net.q

A feat of fortitude by Jemima Sumgong, recovering from a painful fall to win.

The London Marathon on Sunday produced contrasting victories in the men’s and women’s races for 31-year-old Kenyans on a chilly, windy spring morning.

The first half of the men’s race was on pace for the fastest-ever marathon, but Kipchoge couldn’t keep it up to break the world record as he defended his London title.

Kipchoge came so close, covering his eyes in disbelief as he saw he had completed the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) route in front of Buckingham Palace in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 5 seconds.

Only Dennis Kimetto has run a faster marathon that counts toward records with a time of 2:02:57 in Berlin in 2014.

“I realized that I was a few seconds off the world record,” Kipchoge said. “It was not really disappointment.”

Kipchoge’s time was still more than a minute faster than the previous London record of 2:04:29 set two years ago by Wilson Kipsang, who finished fifth Sunday.

“I realized I ran a world record for 30 kilometers, then between 30 and 40 I lost about 20 seconds,” Kipchoge said. “The record can be for the next time ... but I’m happy I ran the course record.”

Stanley Biwott was 46 seconds behind Kipchoge, while Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia was third.

The men’s race was about speed but the women’s marathon provided drama.

Edwards passes Kyle Busch on last lap to win at Richmond HANK KURZ Jr. AP Sports Writer RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Carl Edwards had been grinding for 30 laps, doing everything he could to catch Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch in a two-way breakaway from the pack at Richmond International Raceway.

When he finally caught him on the last lap Sunday, and in the final turn, he had no time to think about what would be the prudent thing to do. Instead, Edwards focused on the reason they are racing: to win.

Edwards bumped his sometimes-volatile teammate off his racing line in the last turn and passed him to win his second consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, and the fourth in a row for the Gibbs racing stable.

NASCAR said it was the first last-lap pass for a victory in the history of the premier series at the track, a span of 120 races.

“I wish it was anybody but my teammate that we had to race like that with, but big picture to me is we’ve both got some wins, we’re in the Chase, and it’s fun to have to race your teammate for the win,” Edwards said. “If the roles were reversed, I would have expected him to bump me the same way.”

Edwards, who had fallen nearly 1.5 seconds behind after a restart with 36 laps to go, gradually ran him down, catching him on the final lap. Then he slipped underneath Busch, a master blocker in late-race situations, and nudged him just enough to allow Edwards to get inside him for his second consecutive victory. It

was also the fourth in a row for the Gibbs stable, and fifth in nine races.

“Kyle’s an amazing teammate and it’s like he got really slow there at the end,” Edwards said. “Something happened that last lap, it’s like his rear tires went off or something, and he went down into (Turn) one and I dove it in and I got to him, and I thought, ‘Man, I’ve got something here.’

Then he went to get down to the bottom to park it in three and four and I’d already decided to go down there, so I thought, ‘Man, I’m going to give him a little nudge.’

“We’ve both got wins.

We’re racing for fun and getting these trophies. Just an awesome day.”

After falling so far behind,

Edwards was surprised to find himself in position to challenge for the victory.

“Man, I didn’t think we had anything. Kyle was just so good for that run. I was just doing everything I could.

He never spun his tires,” he said. “If Dave (crew chief Rogers) hadn’t screamed at me to just go get him, I don’t know if I would have dove it in there that hard.”

Busch seemed less than amused after being denied his third victory in the last four races.

“We just kind of gave it up a little bit there on the last lap, but I guess that’s racing and we move on,” he said. “... We had a really great car. ... We were fast, maybe not as good as Carl was on the long runs, but we did everything right, everything we were supposed to do.”

Jimmie Johnson finished third, follow by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne and polesitter Kevin Harvick. Gibbs placed all four of its drivers in the top seven, with Denny Hamlin sixth and Matt Kenseth seventh.

The race was the first scheduled for during the day at Richmond since 1997, and the racing made a huge fan of Johnson.

“We had multiple lanes that laid the rubber in the race track and we didn’t

have all those marbles built up on the outside, where it really limited your opportunities up high,” he said. “It was fun.

The cars were slipping and sliding; there was a ton of fall-off. I enjoyed the long runs. I really like sizing-up guys that I’m racing with and seeing how that works out. And then, at the end we had a bunch of short runs.”

Edwards dominated the first half of the race, leading 120 of the first 200 laps, and he continued to lead until Kevin Harvick slipped underneath him with 170 laps to go. Edwards faded for a time, but wound up leading seven times for a race-high 151 laps. The race featured 23 lead changes, the most here since 2007.

Seven other drivers also led, with Busch, Harvick, Kurt Busch and Johnson also leading for at least 44 laps.

Notes: Johnson has three career victories at Richmond, but none since September 2008. ... Gibbs cars have won five of the first nine races. ... The race went green for the first 157 laps, the longest green-flag run to start a race at Richmond since 1979, and only the fourth time in the last 47 races in the premier series on the 0.75-mile oval that the first 100 laps were run caution-free.q

Nebraska researchers test new firefighting tool _ drones

GRANT SCHULTE Associated Press BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Researchers in Nebraska tested a new tool on Friday that could eventually help in fighting grass fires — drones.

A team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln flew an unmanned aircraft over the prairie at the Homestead National Monument of America on Friday, dropping ping pong-like balls filled with a chemical mixture to ignite brush-clearing grass fires.

Local and federal officials are interested in the technology because it could help clear overgrown vegetation in rugged, hard-toreach terrain, said Michael Johnson, a spokesman for the National Park Service.

The balls are filled with a chemical powder, potassium permanganate, before they’re loaded into the drone. During flight, the aircraft pierces the ball with a needle and injects it with another chemical, glycol, before releasing it. The mixture ignites one to two minutes later. The technology is already used by helicopters to start controlled burns, but researchers note that the drone is cheaper and more portable.

“You could afford one of these on the back of your fire truck, whereas you probably can’t afford to have a full-sized helicopter parked at your fire station,” said Carrick Detweiler, a member of the Nebraska

research team.

The drone, which is about two feet wide with six rotors — is programmed to drop the balls in a preset pattern to control how the fire spreads. On Friday, the unmanned aircraft rose out of the grass and hummed toward the horizon through a smoky haze. Minutes later, it released the balls one at a time, sparking a series of small fires that quickly grew and merged into one.

Researchers hope the technology eventually could be used to set controlled fires in hard-to-reach places that would clear out brush and small trees and make it more difficult for wildfires to sweep through an area.

The drone is the fourth prototype created by the university’s Nebraska Intelligent Mobile Unmanned Systems Laboratory. It carries up to 13 balls and drops them from roughly 65 feet in the air, and carries a little more than one pound of cargo. Depending on the software used, the drones developed so far have cost between $6,000 and $8,000 apiece, said Jim Higgins, an engineering graduate student who has helped with the project. Universities in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Switzerland are exploring similartechnology.

Higgins said researchers have had to work out some kinks. In earlier tests, the balls exploded. Another time, one caught fire before it was released from the drone. Another limiting

factor is the wind. The lightweight drone could not be used in high winds, which sometimes stoke wildfires.

Sebastian Elbaum, a computer science and engineering professor, said firefighters also could eventually use drones to find hotspots and gather other key information about wildfires.

“It’s very, very exciting stuff,” Elbaum said.

“Today, firefighters have maybe a shovel, maybe their gloves and their helmets. Imagine them having

this in their backpack, pulling it out and telling it, ‘Hey, go scout out there. Check whether it’s hot. Check whether it’s safe.”

The project began two years ago as a new way to prevent wildfires in Nebraska and other Plains and western states. During a severe drought in 2012, Nebraska saw 1,570 wildfires that burned a total of 786 square miles — an expanse nearly seven times the size of Omaha. The combined costs of ground-level fire-

fighting, aerial suppression and assistance from other states cost Nebraska more than $11 million that year.

Researchers will use Friday’s test to examine how fire crews might use drones in the future, said Brittany Duncan, an assistant computer science professor and member of the Nebraska team. “We want to know how we could display information to firefighters better,” she said.q

Enough with the earnings: SEC may reduce company reports MARLEY JAY AP Markets Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Four times a year there’s a kind of parade on Wall Street: companies announce their quarterly earnings, all in a row, with the banks first, then the tech companies, and the retailers bringing up the rear. Stocks can rise or plunge based on the results. And three months later it all happens again.

But regulators are wondering if it’s time for a change.

For about 40 years, companies have had to make four yearly reports of basic financial information, including how much money they earned or lost, how much revenue they took in and what their expenses were. It’s supposed to help investors make informed decisions. But the Securities and Exchange Commission said Wednesday that it may change those rules.

It noted there are drawbacks to the requirements, like the time and money companies have to spend to prepare the reports, and the possibility that important information gets lost in the flood of stuff companies have to disclose.

The SEC didn’t propose any specific new rules or commit to making changes. It’s really asking some philosophical questions: what do investors need to know? What’s the balance between transparency, which investors need, and burdening companies with regulations?

Some observers think quarterly reports are bad for companies.

instead of making longerterm investments that would help their business or the economy in the years to come. Last year Hillary Clinton criticized “quarterly capitalism” and made some of the same points.

“Quarterly numbers force short-term thinking on the part of investors and on the part of management,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. Still, Ablin said he opposed a change.

“I think more information is better,” he said.

If the SEC decides to make a change, the simplest option might be making companies report their results twice a year instead of four times. That’s how the European Union handles earnings, although some countries within the EU have more stringent requirements. If companies wanted to give quarterly

updates, they could still do so.

Erik Gordon, professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, said companies may want to spend less on earnings filings, but even a change to semi-annual reports would be bad for many investors.

“When you cut down on required public disclosure, you favor institutional investors over individual investors,” he said. That’s be-

cause big investment firms like BlackRock or giant pension funds have the ability to do far more analysis and research of companies.

Gordon says smaller investors might have a lot less data to work with.

“An individual person can’t call IBM’s customers and find out what’s going on,” he said. “It will hurt individual investors and put them at a bigger disadvantage to institutional investors.”

Regardless of how many times companies report or what those reports look like, Ablin said it’s vital that investors look at company results closely and be skeptical.

“My frustration is, there’s a fair amount of latitude that investors give management in reported earnings,” he said. “In many respects I think investors tend to take reported earnings at face value.”q

Gas prices jump by 8 cents over past 2 weeks, averages $2.18

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of gasoline has jumped by 8 cents over the past three weeks to $2.18 a gallon for regular grade.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the hike is partly due to crude oil prices edging up. The

price at the pump has gone up 41 cents over the past nine weeks.

Lundberg says that trend will likely continue as refiners make higher-cost summer blend gasoline in compliance with federal regulations.

est average price of regular gasoline was $2.79 per gallon in San Francisco. The lowest was $1.82 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Partnership deals in vogue to counter low growth PAN PYLAS Associated Press LONDON (AP) — With global economic growth slowing, inflation staying low and digital innovationgenerating uncertainty, companies are increasingly looking at partnership deals with other firms, even competitors, to boost revenues, consulting firm EY said Monday.

In its half-yearly review of corporate deal-making, EY found that 40 percent of firms plan to enter alliances of some kind.

Such deals can involve sharing resources to undertake specific projects, and are usually informal and less permanent than joint ventures.

Partnerships are becoming increasingly popular.

IBM, Apple and Johnson & Johnson and others, for example, are working together to develop mobile apps that would help patients. EY itself recently entered into an alliance with LinkedIn to offer services via social networks.

“Alliances are increasingly being seen as a means to take advantage of the expertise of others,” said Pip McCrostie, EY’s global head of transactions. “They provide a more informal, lower risk approach, enabling companies to respond quickly to changes to the market.”

Elsewhere in its survey, EY said companies remain very interested in acquisitions in order to offset the impact of lower growth. It found that 50 percent of the executives it polled intend to make transactions over the coming year.

Though down on the record 59 percent recorded in October, the appetite for mergers and acquisitions, or M&A, remains well

above the survey’s sevenyear long-run average of 41 percent.

to bolster their finances by purchasing other firms and reaping their profits — provided valuations are not exorbitant. In a slowergrowth world that has its roots largely in the slowdown in China’s economy, deals can help cushion firms’ finances.

“Prolonged low economic growth coupled with market disruption, is generating a strong M&A appetite,” said McCrostie. “Given the pressure on pricing and the pace of change, organic growth alone is often not enough.”

Companies are also shifting to bigger deals, according to EY, with a fivefold increase in the number of firms looking to make acquisitions worth $1 billion or more.

Not all deals work out as planned. The most visible case is the decision by Pfizer and Irish rival Allergan

Still, the number and value of deals have shot up over the past few years from the lows recorded during the global financial crisis of 2008-9 and the ensuing global recession. Events took place throughout the country celebrating the author of “Don Quixote,” one of the most influential books in world literature and a work generally regarded as the precursor of the modern novel.

The Cervantes award is handed out each year on April 23. It coincides with UNESCO’s World Book Day , which promotes literature and commemorates Cervantes and English playwright William Shakespeare, who died on that date in 1616.

Cervantes actually died on April 22, 1616, but Spain commemorates his death on the date he was buried.

Some artists and academics have been critical of Spain’s central government for not allocating funds to organize events on a scale similar to those celebrating Shakespeare’s life in Britain.

Yet many still found imaginative ways to honor Cervantes. Computer expert Diego Buendia designed a program that uploaded the entire text of “Don Quixote” onto Twitter in blocks of 140 characters at a time over the last 17 months. And a popular TV cookery show asked competitors to produce menus linked to the region of La Mancha where “Don Quixote” is set.

Solar-powered plane completes journey across Pacific Ocean MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.

(AP) — A solar-powered airplane on a mission to fly around the world landed in California, completing a risky, three-day flight across a great expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

Pilot Bertrand Piccard landed the Solar Impulse 2 in Mountain View, in the Silicon Valley south of San Francisco, at 11:45 p.m. Saturday following a 62-hour, nonstop solo flight from Hawaii without fuel. The plane taxied into a huge tent at Moffett Airfield where Piccard was greeted by the project’s team.

“You know there was a moment in the night, I was watching the reflection of the moon on the ocean and I was thinking ‘I’m completely alone in this tiny cockpit and I feel completely confident.’

And I was really thankful to life for bringing me this experience,” Piccard said at a news conference after he landed. “It’s maybe this is one of the most fantastic experiences of life I’ve had.”

Piccard and fellow Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg have been taking turns flying the plane on an aroundthe-world trip since taking off from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in March 2015.

It made stops in Oman,

Myanmar, China, Japan and Hawaii.

The trans-Pacific legs were the riskiest part of the plane’s travels because of the lack of emergency landing sites.

The aircraft faced a few bumps along the way.

The Solar Impulse 2 landed in Hawaii in July and was forced to stay in the islands after the plane’s battery system sustained heat damage on its trip from Japan. The team was delayed in Asia, too. When first attempting to fly from Nanjing, China, to Hawaii,

the crew had to divert to Japan because of unfavorable weather and a damaged wing.

A month later, with better weather conditions, the plane left Nagoya in central Japan for Hawaii.

The plane’s ideal flight speed is about 28 mph, though that can double during the day when the sun’s rays are strongest.

The carbon-fiber aircraft weighs over 5,000 pounds, about as much as a midsize truck.

The plane’s wings, which stretch wider than those

of a Boeing 747, are equipped with 17,000 solar cells that power propellers and charge batteries. The plane runs on stored energy at night.

Solar Impulse 2 will make three more stops in the United States before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Europe or northern Africa, according to the website documenting the journey.

“The adventure continues,” Piccard said. “The story is not finished.”

The project, which is estimated to cost more than $100 million, began in 2002 to highlight the importance of renewable energy and the spirit of innovation.

“I think innovation and pioneering must continue,” Piccard said. “It must continue for better quality of life, for clean technologies, for renewable energy. This is where the pioneers can really express themselves and be successful.”

Solar-powered air travel is not yet commercially practical, given the slow travel time, weather and weight constraints of the aircraft.

“Maybe it will be boring in 20 years when all the airplanes will be electric and people will say ‘Oh it’s routine.’ But now, today, an airplane that is electric, with electric engines, that produces its own energy with the sun, it can never be boring,” Piccard said.q

That’s not to slight Kendrick Lamar, Sturgill Simpson, Beyonce or some unknown creator working in a basement to turn the sounds in their head into a file for everyone to hear and enjoy.

But any year that silences the voices behind “Sign o’ the Times,” ‘’Space Oddity,” ‘’Tequila Sunrise,” ‘’Shining Star” and “The Bottle Let Me Down” can’t qualify as anything other than awful.

Prince’s stunning death on Thursday adds to a tragic roll call that already included David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Maurice White and Merle Haggard. Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister beat the calendar’s turn to 2016 by a couple of days, Natalie Cole by mere hours.

“Running out of living musical heroes, those we measure everything against, emulate, know we won’t surpass but inspire us to try,” Carrie Brownstein, actress and Sleater-Kinney singer, tweeted Thursday.

While the circumstances behind Prince’s death re-

main unclear, most others were mundane, independent of rock ‘n’ roll excess.

Cancer. Diabetes. Intestinal disease. Pneumonia.

Parkinson’s Disease. Bowie and Frey kept their conditions private, so few outside family saw them coming.

Merle Haggard was 79, not cheated of life, and White of Earth, Wind and Fire suffered a slow decline before dying at 74. Yet others were too young — 69 for Bowie, 67 for Frey, 45 for Malik Taylor, the founder of A Tribe Called Quest known as Phife Dawg.

And 57 for Prince, without any apparent signs of slowing down.

All of the deaths hit like a punch to the stomach. Their careers were long enough to create impressive legacies, not long enough to keep adding accomplishments. We weren’t through with them, nor they with us.

Bowie’s last album came simultaneously with his death, the song and video for “Lazarus” full of selfawareness and humor. He was bringing his music to Broadway. Retirement held no interest, and neither did repeatedly churning out copies of songs he made

when young and reckless.

The Eagles, a band whose carcass Frey once left by the side of the road, was back together and an ongoing creative force before he died. The band that once brought country influences into rock ‘n’ roll was bringing rock ‘n’ roll to country in its later years, appealing to a new marketplace whose stars sounded like they grew up on Eagles songs. Even if he took it a little easier, Haggard was still working in his final years and brought his music to younger generations at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee.

Nothing could stop Prince, could it? The man was indefatigable in concert, a whirlwind who drilled his bands until they met his

exacting standards. He released four albums in the last 18 months, and just announced he was writing his autobiography. He was in the midst of a “Piano and a Microphone” tour, which was just as it sounded — a rare chance to see an artist strip down his best songs to their essence. It was a must-have ticket.

During some of those shows, he sat at the piano to sing “Heroes” in honor of Bowie.

“We had a tough year already,” veteran Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich said Thursday. “It’s really our generation now.

We’d hear about past stars dying because of our parents. This time it’s our greats.”

The deaths of musical he-

roes resonate because their work is aimed straight for the heart. These weren’t celebrities.

They were friends who comforted you when your heart was broken, who gave you bravery, who understood exactly what you were thinking. As long as the music lived, so too would the person you were when you first heard it. The club where the synthesizer riff of “1999” washed over you, and who you danced with. The car radio where you thrilled to the crackle of “When Doves Cry.” The bedroom where you retreated to absorb the stunning breadth of “Sign o’ the Times.”

Remember that, and maybe 2016 can be a little less crummy.q

‘Huntsman’ sequel misfires; ‘Jungle Book’ reigns LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Jungle Book” remained king of the box office in its second weekend in theaters, beating new opener “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” by around $40 million, according to comScore estimates Sunday.

Disney’s live-action/CG spectacle is proving to be a true all-audience success story. With a PG-rating and solid word of mouth, it fell only 41 percent in weekend two, earning $60.8 million and bumping its domestic total to $191.5 million in just 10 days in theaters.

The spectacular and somewhat unexpected hold of “The Jungle Book” overshadowed the debut of “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” which, despite its high-wattage cast of Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, had a somewhat lackluster $20.1 million bow.

Kelly Ripa plans return to daytime talk show Tuesday LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kelly Ripa is returning to her daytime talk show, ending an absence that followed word her co-host, Michael Strahan, will join “Good Morning America.”

Ripa will be back Tuesday on “Live With Kelly and Michael,” she said in an email to the show’s staff that was obtained by The Associated Press.

“I wanted to thank you all for giving me the time to process this new information,” Ripa wrote. “Your kindness, support, and love has overwhelmed me. We are a family and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning.”

Tuesday’s show will be the first time Ripa and Strahan are reunited on camera since last week’s announcement that the former football star will leave in September to work full time on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

He’s worked a couple of days a week at “GMA” for the past two years, but he always has to leave midway through to head to the “Live with Kelly and Michael” studio on Manhattan’s upper West Side.

“Live” is in the ABC family, produced by parent Walt Disney Co., and it airs after “GMA” in most TV markets.

The former football star, who played with the New York Giants, will be joining the show’s regular cast of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Lara Spencer, Amy Robach and Ginger Zee. Actress Ana Gasteyer was a last-minute replacement for Ripa when she failed to come to work last Wednesday, with Erin Andrews, the co-host of “Dancing With the Stars,” then stepping in. Actress Shay Mitchell of “Pretty Little Liars” was scheduled to co-host Monday.

Ripa’s unexplained absence came amid published reports that she felt

blindsided and angered by Strahan’s departure to join “Good Morning America.”

She has not commented publicly. In mentioning his planned departure on “Live” last Wednesday, Strahan noted he’d be an on-air neighbor on “GMA.” “I was reading some stuff and it sounded like I had died,” he said.

“It’s not a eulogy, people.”

Strahan also made a point of thanking Ripa, who welcomed him to the show in 2012 when he replaced Regis Philbin and taught him much about TV. “Kelly, I thank you, I love you and everyone else here at ‘Live,’” Strahan said.

His planned exit has revived rumors that ABC is considering expanding the two-hour “Good Morning America,” which is first in the ratings but is losing viewers. The competing “Today” show on NBC airs for four hours.q
