What is Clearing?

If you’ve not got the grades you expected, keep calm, Clearing is an ideal way for you to find a course.

Or, if you’ve only just thought about going to university and you want to find out what your options are, Clearing is the way for you to apply.

It’s a way of matching up course vacancies at universities with students who are looking for the best course for them, and is available from July to September each year.

Going through Clearing with ARU Our Clearing hotline is open from 1 July 2016. If you already have your exam results, for example BTEC or Access qualifications, you can apply straight away.

Here are our top 10 tips and help with Clearing: 3. Think options Look at everything out there. We have a range of subjects available from Accounting to Criminology, Medical Science to Mechanical Engineering, Law to Nutrition, Social Policy to Social Work, Sports Science to Tourism – with lots in between. Whatever your interest, read the course outline and, if you’re interested in hands-on experience, look for how much practical assessment is involved as well as if we offer industry placements.

1. Take a breath Stay calm and think about what’s next. What matters to you? Think about what you really enjoy doing, not just the subjects where you got the best grades. There’s a strong link between passion for a subject and success.

4. Have your details to hand 2. Read your stuff Find out what’s available in the subjects you most enjoy – the UCAS website is the best place for upto-the-minute vacancies, and The Telegraph has listings in its papers and online. Our Clearing website anglia.ac.uk/clearing offers lots of information.

You’ll need your UCAS personal ID number (if you have one), but no need, if you are applying to us direct.

Your results – A Level, BTEC, Access course and your AS Levels and GCSEs. ARU also accept a number of other level 3 qualifications. These include, amongst others, IB, Cambridge Pre-U, Scottish and Irish Highers, and we’re happy to discuss an offer based on these.

5. Take a moment to listen and reflect Pick-up the phone and give the call your full attention. Make sure that you’re somewhere quiet – and you have a pen and paper handy.

6. Ask about accommodation What sort of accommodation choices are there? At Anglia Ruskin there are a number of different options depending on where you live, which campus your course is at and what you’d like to do. On your own or in a group – know your preferences and be clear about what is going to be available to you at the campus you choose.

8. Confirm your offer Once you’ve been offered a place, you’ll need to refer yourself to us via UCAS track. You can do this from 3pm onwards on results day. If we make you an offer at Anglia Ruskin, we give you up to 24 hours to refer yourself on UCAS track, or for nonUCAS applicants, to send us copies of your certificates confirming your results. And remember, only enter a Clearing choice on Track once you’ve had a verbal offer from a university.

Otherwise, things will be delayed and you might miss out.

9. Visit campus If you’ve not already done so, get along to the university campus where you want to study. Drop in and take a tour of the campus, meet current students and lecturers and speak to the accommodation team.

Melissa’s Story I really didn’t think that I would ever have the chance to study towards a degree and the fact that Anglia Ruskin gave me the chance is something I will never forget, and always motivates me to work harder. I cannot thank ARU enough for giving me this opportunity.

My name is Melissa and I have just finished my foundation year in pharmaceutical science. I am about to start my first year on the BSc Honours course in September.

I came to Anglia Ruskin through Clearing and I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for all the Clearing team’s help and guidance I wouldn’t be where I am today. I was lucky enough to be offered a place on the course and my future prospects are greater than they’ve ever been. The Clearing staff were so helpful and supported me every step of the way, from the first telephone call where they offered me a place, right up to my first official day at university.

The facilities that I use for this course are amazing. My course means I spend a lot of time in the ‘SuperLabs’ which are brand new state-of-the art labs in which I do all my practical experiments and lab reports under the supervision of my lecturers. I chose to study pharmaceutical science as my ambition is to work for Cancer Research or Alzheimer UK as a research scientist and this course is perfectly suited for me to reach that goal.

Since studying at Anglia Ruskin, I have joined the University’s cheerleading squad, the Anglia Ruskin Sirens, and this will be my first year as president of the team. As corny as it sounds, joining a society like the Sirens has allowed me to make friends for life who have made my university experience one that I will always remember. I am so excited to see where my degree takes me.
