it was King William I, who laid the foundation for the designation ‘Procurer to the Court’. He set up the Court Commission to draw up a number of guidelines for this title. At that time, no clear distinction was made between the predicate ‘Royal’ and the predicate ‘Court Procurer’. This difference would gradually arise during the reign of King William III. After his death in 1890 Queen Emma tightened up the rules for the designation ‘Procurer to the Court’. The title ‘Royal’ was not granted by her, because it was reserved for her daughter. It was not until a century after the first designation of ‘Procurer to the Court’ was awarded, that Queen Wilhelmina drew up clear rules in 1907. The designation ‘Royal’ would henceforth apply to companies of distinct sizes and the designation ‘Procurer to the Court’ remained reserved for smaller companies.

Since 1813, more than 4,200 entrepreneurs and companies have been awarded the ‘Court Procurer’ award from the reigning monarch or from other members of the Royal House. Since her inauguration in 1980, Queen Beatrix has awarded the predicate 559 times until her abdication. In addition, she completed the finishing touches with regard to the regulations.

The predicate still stands for quality, solidity, continuity and integrity of the company. The accompanying royal coat of arms, bearing the text By Royal Order Procurer to the Court, emphasizes the craftsmanship and has been inspiring public confidence for two hundred years.

Zijn camping De Paalberg mag zich in de rij van Hofleveranciers voegen. Samen met de burgemeester is zojuist het wapenschild opgehangen. Van den Broek hierover: “Het is bijzonder.

Anno 2021 ondernemen Hofleveranciers nog steeds in het hart van onze samenleving.

Lodewijk Napoleon Bonaparte is de regerend vorst van 1806 tot 1810, Koning van Holland. Tijdens zijn periode bespeelt hij de harten van het volk en de ondernemers met zijn open oog voor ambachten, nijverheid en cultuur. De koning en zijn entourage strooien kwistiig met titels en predicaten. In grote lijnen worden nu de richtlijnen bepaald voor het voeren van de predicaten koninklijk, hofleverancier en vele varianten daarop. Na het vertrek van Lodewijk Napoleon worden in 1813 de troepen van Napoleon verdreven en verzoekt het voorlopige Algemeen Bestuur de komst van prins Willem Frederik van Oranje uit Engeland. Hij wordt met gejuich ontvangen op het strand van Scheveningen en – anderhalf jaar later – uitgeroepen tot Koning Willem I der Verenigde Nederlanden. Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden is een feit.

Koning Willem Alexander heeft vanaf zijn inhuldiging het recht om het predicaat en het wapen ‘bij Koninklijke Beschikking Hofleverancier’ toe te kennen. Hij neemt het regime van zijn moeder ongewijzigd over. Bij de verschijning van dit boek mogen zo’n 600 bedrijven zich Hofleverancier noemen.

In 2013 heeft de Stichting Hofleveranciers in Nederland uitgebreid stilgestaan bij het 200-jarig jubileum van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Inmiddels is het niet alleen tijd voor een opfrisbeurt van de geschiedenis, maar nemen we ook een kijkje in de rol en positie van Hofleveranciers in het huidige straatbeeld. Wat is de plaats van de Hofleverancier in het derde decennium van de 21e eeuw? Naast de eeuwenoude anekdotes spreken de verhalen van moderne familiebedrijven voor zich.

Hij wil weer in zijn wachtende koets stappen als ‘juffrouw van der Toorn’, de echtgenote van de toenmalige koekenbakker, de koning aan zijn arm trekt en stamelt: ‘M’neer ef vergeten um te betalen!’ Lodewijk begrijpt heel goed dat het om een geldkwestie gaat en geeft zijn kamerheer een wenk om het verzuim te herstellen. Een handdruk met florijnen verdrijft de zorg van de koekenbakkersvrouw, waarop de koning lachend vertrekt.

Zo laat hij zijn soldaten zoeken naar overlevenden en regelt hij voedsel en medische zorg.

De regels en het spel Bij aankomst van Lodewijk Napoleon met zijn vrouw Hortense en hun twee peuters op 18 juni 1806, na een vermoeiende reis van drie dagen, is Huis ten Bosch door de Grootmeester al enigszins bewoonbaar gemaakt met goederen vanuit Frankrijk. Een van de leveranciers is de firma Biennais uit Parijs. Deze firma toont al op een nota van 10 juni 1806 dat zij, naast ‘Orfèvre de leurs M.M. Impériales et Royales’, ook ‘Orfèvre de sa Majesté le Roi de Hollande’ is. Ook de firma Desoureches voert een titel. Kortom, al voordat Lodewijk een voet op Hollandse bodem heeft gezet, zijn er leveranciers door hem begunstigd met bepaalde rechten en titels.

Tussen 1806 en 1810 bestaan er verschillende vormen van ‘Hofleverancierschap’. De gebruikte titulatuur geeft nogal eens aanleiding tot verwarring, omdat besluiten en decreten meestal in het Frans zijn opgesteld. De besluiten en decreten worden vervolgens in het Nederlands vertaald waarbij het begrip ‘du Roi’ of ‘sa Majesté’ wordt vertaald in ‘koninklijk’. Hierdoor ontstaan er twee verschillende titels voor hetzelfde begrip.

Zo verzoekt Simon Pieter Valette, cadet aan de school van de Koninklijke Marine in een brief aan de koning, gedateerd 6 juli 1808, om bestendiging van het brevet van zijn vader Jean Valette, hoedenmaker in Amsterdam. De zaak in Amsterdam bestond al 25 jaar en had vrijwel direct na zijn komst in Holland aan de koning geleverd. Na de komst van de koning in Holland had zijn vader tevens een depot geopend in Den Haag.

Al op 20 december 1806 had zijn vader een verzoek ingediend ter verkrijging van de eervolle titel ’Chapellier de la Maison du Roi’. De koning was duidelijk gecharmeerd van dit verzoek en stuurde de aanvraag op 10 januari 1807 ter beoordeling aan zijn eerste aalmoezenier.

Hierop ontving de koning op de 13e een gunstig rapport zodat de Grootmeester de heer Valette kon meedelen hij op 19 januari 1807 door de koning was onderscheiden. Valette mocht de titel ‘Chapellier de la Maison du Roi’ aannemen en ‘...décorer son enseigne des armes de Sa Majesté’ ofwel zijn uithangbord versieren met het wapen van de koning.

Zo zijn er kooplieden en winkeliers die daadwerkelijk zakendoen met de koning, het hof of de paleizen. Deze leveranciers zien dit na verloop van tijd graag bevestigd met een acte of brevet waarin niet alleen dit verband bekrachtigd wordt maar dat zij de bijpassende titel als ‘Chapellier du Roi’, ‘Horloger de sa Majesté’ of ‘Manufacturier de la Maison du Roi’ mogen voeren. Veelal vraagt men deze titel niet alleen om hun band met het koningshuis aan de buitenwereld te tonen, maar ook om hun onderneming onder de aandacht van een groter publiek te brengen en op die manier de omzet te verhogen.

Daarnaast zijn er ondernemers en firma’s die zowel aan koning en hof als aan instellingen van Staat leveren. Veelal vervaardigen zij bijzondere producten op het gebied van kunst en nijverheid. Boekhandelaren, drukkers, graveurs en kunsthandelaren als de Haagse Gebroeders van Cleef mogen zich ‘Boekhandelaars van Zijne Majesteit en de Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Den Haag’ noemen, Johannes Altheer uit Utrecht is ‘Libraire du Roi’, J.S. van Esveldt Holtrop uit Amsterdam ‘Libraire de sa Majesté’ en E. Maaskamp ‘Koninklijk Kunstenaar voor Plaat en Graveerkunst’.
