Phones In schools ELLE DILORETO
Introduction A lot of people have different opinions on not being able to have phones in school. Well, both sides can put up a pretty fair argument on why phones can benefit the learning experience, and why they just might be a pointless distraction. Let’s take a closer look at both sides, and see what scientists, have to say about how phones affect students learning during the school day. Benefits of phones in school There are so many ways phones can be useful during the school day, so let’s take a look at those benefits. Phones can help with responsible digital citizenship When phones are allowed to be used during class, it teaches students when the proper time to use a phone is, setting boundaries and barriers for a better screen limit inside the classroom, and in their future lives. With this boundary set, it helps students realize their phone isn’t a tool they need every second of their lives. Helping with safety Teachers worry about their student’s safety. There’s no doubt about it. With students being able to contact their parents or classmates when they are in need of help, it teaches them when they would need to use communication on their phone, and will help them in their future lives to live a safer life. Faster learning Phones can help students learn faster. Just like sports which students enjoy and can stay engaged in, phones will do the same if incorporated into classes. It is a proven fact that phones in class will keep students engaged in the learning process and benefit their future school, life, and careers.
Activities Using phones in activities is a great way to keep students engaged and wanting to learn the subject they are being taught instead of being lectured to in class for the full hour). Helps with positive change and innovation Innovation is something in this world we are so lucky to have. Phones are just another proof of that, where we live in a world where phones are used in 83% of jobs and the workforce. So why not get our students used to that sooner than later. Intuitive learning Phones are something our world is growing up with, so that means students are very used to them by now. By incorporating phones into the classroom it helps students to be familiar with a device they are using to learn and will push their school career further.

Tools Every cell phone has many tools that can be useful to the classroom environment, such as: a calculator, a clock, a timer, a calender, not to mention, students can download school apps on their phones, etc. Group work Our eighth reason for high school students to have phones in the classroom is because it can help bring groups together to work on a project

5 Experts Weigh in on phones
ELLE DILORETO
What do scientists and experts say about phones in school and whether they should be banned or not.
▼Danielle Einstein, Psychologist: Phones should be banned from schools 1. Phones are used to avoid face to face conversations 2. P hones have apps that become addictive 3. The presence of a phone, even if you’re not looking at it, but it’s near you, shows that students seem to forget what they were learning. When it is in a different room, they learn better 4. P hones cause anxiety, depression, and uncertainity, and if it affects you, then you’re not going to do well in school, tests, classwork, exams, etc. ▲ Matthew Kerney, teacher education:
Phones should be allowed in school 1. Regardless of banning, students will continue to learn with a phone near them even outside of school 2. If students want to communicate, create media, collect data, take pictures, etc. phones are way easier to do that 3. If kids want to work at the time and pace they need, phones are the key to allowing you to do that
