Phones In schools
ELLE DILORETO
Introduction
A lot of people have different opinions on not being able to have phones in school. Well, both sides can put up a pretty fair argument on why phones can benefit the learning experience, and why they just might be a pointless distraction. Let’s take a closer look at both sides, and see what scientists, have to say about how phones affect students learning during the school day.
Benefits of phones in school
There are so many ways phones can be useful during the school day, so let’s take a look at those benefits.
Phones can help with responsible digital citizenship
When phones are allowed to be used during class, it teaches students when the proper time to use a phone is, setting boundaries and barriers for a better screen limit inside the classroom, and in their future lives. With this boundary set, it helps students realize their phone isn’t a tool they need every second of their lives.
Helping with safety
Teachers worry about their student’s safety. There’s no doubt about it. With students being able to contact their parents or classmates when they are in need of help, it teaches them when they would need to use communication on their phone, and will help them in their future lives to live a safer life.
Faster learning
Phones can help students learn faster. Just like sports which students enjoy and can stay engaged in, phones will do the same if incorporated into classes. It is a proven fact that phones in class will keep students engaged in the learning process and benefit their future school, life, and careers.
Activities
Using phones in activities is a great way to keep students engaged and wanting to learn the subject they are being taught instead of being lectured to in class for the full hour).
Helps with positive change and innovation
Innovation is something in this world we are so lucky to have. Phones are just another proof of that, where we live in a world where phones are used in 83% of jobs and the workforce. So why not get our students used to that sooner than later.
Intuitive learning
Phones are something our world is growing up with, so that means students are very used to them by now. By incorporating phones into the classroom it helps students to be familiar with a device they are using to learn and will push their school career further.

Tools
Every cell phone has many tools that can be useful to the classroom environment, such as: a calculator, a clock, a timer, a calender, not to mention, students can download school apps on their phones, etc.
Group work
Our eighth reason for high school students to have phones in the classroom is because it can help bring groups together to work on a project

Experts
Weigh in on phones
What do scientists and experts say about phones in school and whether they should be banned or not.
▼Danielle Einstein, Psychologist: Phones should be banned from schools
1. Phones are used to avoid face to face conversations
2. Phones have apps that become addictive
3. The presence of a phone, even if you’re not looking at it, but it’s near you, shows that students seem to forget what they were learning. When it is in a different room, they learn better
4. Phones cause anxiety, depression, and uncertainity, and if it affects you, then you’re not going to do well in school, tests, classwork, exams, etc.
▲ Matthew Kerney, teacher education: Phones should be allowed in school
1. Regardless of banning, students will continue to learn with a phone near them even outside of school
2. If students want to communicate, create media, collect data, take pictures, etc. phones are way easier to do that
3. If kids want to work at the time and pace they need, phones are the key to allowing you to do
Phones in Schools continued from page 1
as a team. Phones are sure to enable group work in the classroom.
Creativity
Teachers want to see creativity in the classroom. With various tools such as video editing, and camera on phones, students can engage faster by using those tools and show their creativity with a device they are more comfortable and familiar with.
Memories and fun
The last reason you should allow phones on school campuses is, students having phones in school will make them happier to have a device that they are engaged with and to share that with friends. They will be happier to come into school every day at a place they know they will have fun but also put their best foot forward into classes and learning.
All of these reasons show why phones would be beneficial to the school environment, but let’s look into the reasons where phones just become unnecessary and a distraction during the school day.
Why phones should be banned in school
There’s no doubt that phones are a distraction during the school day to the point where they should not be allowed on the school campus AT ALL. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons that go into why phones should be banned from school.
Distraction
Notifications on your phone are a huge distraction because you are surely going to want to pick up your phone and see what the notification is about. Students don’t even notice that they’re distracted. They are hardly listening to their teacher, and forget everything they were learning that day in school.
Grades Falling
When students are on their phones, they’re not doing work and just playing games, allowing them to become distracted. When you’re on your phone you forget everything you were doing before and information you were taught is no longer stored in your brain.
Can cause students to get upset
With cyberbullying from social media these days, students are sure to see all the rude and not true comments about them, causing them to get upset and their mind is focused on the comments instead of the learning.
THE HOWLER
Homework
If students constantly use their phones at school, then picture what it’s like when they return home. If they’re on their phones during class and not working, then it’s likely the same situation at home. No work getting done. If cell phones aren’t in school, the student is more likely to finish all of their work in time for the next day and their grades will improve because of this. (See above Grades Falling).
Escape Route
When a student doesn’t understand a concept, they don’t seek help, instead resorting to their phone and looking up the information. Then, students go into social media, completely forgetting about the work they were initially coming to the phone for.
Disrespect
When a teacher is trying to give a lecture and a student is on their phone, it is distracting to the other students who don’t have a phone in class, so they’re looking on to the other student’s device, just becoming a distraction for all. This goes without sound. If someone sees you playing a game or watching a video, they will want to see more of that game or video and instantly be distracted, forgetting about their work. It is not only a distraction, but disrespectful to the teacher who is paid to teach you, taking the time out of their day to benefit your future career.
Preparing for life
In this period of life, you need to go to college and have a career to be “successful” in life. Now in life, it is so hard to get a scholarship to go to college. You need to get good grades and take away what you’re learning from these classes, and if students are on their phones, it’s like throwing away all of that education. Like why even come to school in the first place if you’re going to be on your phone all day?! If students are on their phones all night long, they’re going to be late to school or sleeping in class from tiredness. Cell phones are ruining the way to student success.
Cheating
Kids are becoming distracted from phones, not taking away what they had learned, so when it comes to tests, they struggle, causing them to cheat because they can’t remember what they learned earlier in that class. If students are cheating, they’re not learning anything, and
once again, getting into a good college (See above in Preparing for life) becomes harder.
Cyberbullying
With so much social media and everybody who’s on it, there are some people who are just using it to bully others. Immature. Tell me about it. So if kids are being mean over phone, students are constantly checking their phones, and again, taking away from their learning experience. It’s the same on the other. These immature students are so focused on hurting someone, they go onto their phone and make rude posts about another person, and not focusing on their studies anymore. This is one of the worst distractions. Bullying can cause depression for many where they don’t have any more energy in them to get up out of bed and go to school to live their lives. It’s so sad what has happened to our world, not only because of the phones, but that’s a whole different topic on top of this. We won’t get into that. All in all, cyberbullying is hurting kids and ruining their education because of another student and phones.
Social life
With kids being on their phones all day, they don’t even realize that they’re missing out on their social life. A social life isn’t texting, it’s talking to someone face to face. To not have a social life can cause depression because students may think that no one likes them when really, they’re just constantly on their phone instead of talking to others.
All in all, both sides can put up a pretty good argument to why phones may be beneficial to school and why they wouldn’t be beneficial during the school day. Now let’s see what scientists have to say about phones being used in school.•

THE HOWLER
AC POLL RESULTS: Phones
ELLE DILORETO

I surveyed high school students to see whether or not people thought that phones negatively affected their learning or whether they thought phones positively affected their learning. 6o people filled out the form (Thank you!), and here were the results. 13 of them (21.3%), said that phones negatively affected their learning making them a distraction when it comes to day to day classes through the school year. 32 of them (52.5%) said that phones positively affect their learning, making it easy for them to concentrate in class when having their phone. The other 15 of them chose other. Below you can find the “other” responses that were shared.
Other responses:
• It allows us to look at our schedule and see what classes we have.
• Yes when it’s not during classes and a free period.
• I feel like cell phones can be a distraction in class but it’s a stretch to take them out of the school day completely.
• I don’t really care.
• I would say yes, but also no, because even though using your cell phone might be useful for certain subjects, it can also be a distraction to us from doing work that can become late or even never finished.
• Depends on situation.
• They can be useful, but they can also be a distraction at times.
• They are a distraction, but they shouldn’t be banned.
• It depends.
• I feel as though cell phones help me stay focused throughout school, as by having access to it, I won’t feel the need
to check it during class. I have always made sure in the past year to respect my teachers, and put away the phone when class starts, and not use it during class. It seems it’s mostly ruined by specific other students who abuse the system during the school day.
• I don’t care.
• I feel like cell phones are only a distraction if they are made one. By banning them, we are causing them to become a distraction. In other words, I don’t think banning cell phones is solving anything. If anything, my computer is more of a distraction than my phone.
• I feel like cell phones can be beneficial if used properly during school.
• They don’t benefit learning in class rooms during class time, but I think they should be allowed for usage during free blocks such as, communtinity block, breaks, or lunch breaks (not lunch time). The macbooks are nice, but aren’t that convenient compared to a phone. If we were allowed to use our phones during breaks and one day I needed to text my mom, rather than waiting until the end of the day, I could just wait until break and then text her.
• I feel like unchecked cell phone use in class will only cause distractions, but use on our own time and breaks should not be prohibited.
• I feel like they can be fine sometimes and then not other times.
Conclusion
Scientists, students, etc. all say so many different things about cell phones, which just supports that no one is right or wrong in this. At the end of the day, it’s up to the owner of the phone, to be mature enough to handle usage of their phone and make decisions based off that, but no one is right or wrong when it come to phones in school.•
▲ Joanne Orlando, technology and learning: Phones should be allowed in school
We need to teach kids what we are growing up with, which is technology. We use technology in our every day lives. Books and blackboards are not that efficient today
▲ Damian Maher, ICT educator: Phones should be allowed in school
1. We use technology everyday. We need to prepare students for that, because technology had become something we are dependent on
2. Safety is key. Being able to communicate with your parents is a huge help with safety and teaches kids how to be safe with their phones
3. Phones have health apps that can really help kids. Banning phones makes it impossible for kids who need those health apps to be healthy
▲ Susan Sawyer, pediatrician: Phones should be allowed in school
1. Teaching kids to be a safe and responsible in the technology environment is a huge must
2. There are crisis lines on the phones that students can easily access, and they’ll need to have access to those during the school day with the world we live in today
Conclusion
All in all there is no right or wrong about phones. Both sides can be correct. There are benefits of phones and there are some nonbenefits of phones. At the end of the day, it’s up to the students on how they decide to be responsible and use their phones. Now, let’s see what some kids around AC in highschool said about whether or not they think their phone helps them in school or doesn’t help them in school. •

MOANA REVIEW
JACK BOGUE AND TAYLER PERKINS
Moana is a 2016 animated film produced by Disney that tells the story of a young Polynesian girl who embarks on a voyage to save her island. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the movie is known for its vibrant animation and heartfelt story.
In the beginning of the movie, it starts with a story from Moana’s grandmother named Tala about the demigod Maui who stole the heart of Te Fiti, causing a darkness to spread and drain the life from every island. According to the legend, the darkness will eventually spread to Moana’s home island of Motunui, unless somebody can find Maui and get him to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Tala told this story to baby Moana and some other young children, and we found it funny how the other children got scared and cried, while baby Moana smiled in awe at the interesting story. This shows how brave Moana is, even as an infant.
Another moment that shows Moana’s
FASHION
In the past spring and summer, the classic brand Adidas has taken the world by storm. With styles like Gazelle, Samba, and Campus, trending for months. The Adidas trend is pretty apparent at AC. I would say they are the most common brand of shoe being worn right now. The trend of Adidas began months ago, and people, mostly teenagers, are still buying these shoes. So, why is the Adidas trend lasting so long? Unlike water bottle trends, like Stanleys and Owalas, shoe trends seem to be around for longer. Even past the height of the trend, people everywhere continue to wear the shoes, whereas when Stanleys went out of style, many switched immediately to Owalas. In my opinion the reason shoe trends last so long is because many people don’t buy the shoes during the height of the trend. During this time, most shoes are sold out and take a while to re-stock. Once

bravery is when she decides to go on the voyage to save the world. She leaves her island, sailing past the reef that previously capsized her canoe, and uses the stars to guide her to find Maui. She braves Lalotai, land of monsters, and fights the lava monster Te Ka. Even when Maui gave up on restoring the heart, Moana still went back to do it herself. With the help of her ocean friend, and Maui’s return, Moana was able to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save the world. •
they have though, there’s a second surge of the trend and the shoes stay in style for even longer. Along with this reason, there’s the obvious fact that shoes are way more expensive than water bottles. There’s a noticeable pattern of successful companies coming out with numerous styles after and during a trending moment. No matter the style, Adidas continues to remain popular around the world and at AC.•

THE HOWLER ALBUM REVIEW
We Still Don’t Trust You - ft The Weeknd
Jack 7/10 Ari 6.5/10
It is a pretty long song and very chill. Something you can listen to and vibe out. The song is kind of repetitive which hinders its rating. The song intrigues the listeners. However it lacks in uniqueness. It feels kind of bland and does not keep us interested.
Drink N Dance
Jack 6/10 Ari 8/10
The drums are very consistent throughout the song and it gives it a nice rhythm. The other instruments sound very whimsical and Future’s first verse is very good. However, I feel like they made the song longer than it should have been. I was wondering if another verse should have happened, and I feel like another rap heavy part of the song would have made it better.
Out Of My Hands
Jack 9/10 Ari 9/10
The whole beginning of the song and middle of it is spectacular. Future flow goes hard and the lyrics sound tuff. The one thing hindering this song from being a 10/10 is the slow and boring ending, making it a 9/10.
Jealous
Jack 2/10 Ari 2/10
This song is just strange. There is some talking in the background which is deceiving because I don’t know what’s going on. It feels like I’m listening to EDM music not future. Disappointed. Had to stop half way through because listening to it was unbearable. One of the WORST Future songs I have heard in a LONG TIME.
This Sunday
Jack 10/10 Ari 6/10
One of my favorite Future songs. He is so calm and it flows very nicely. People who like upbeat songs might not love this but it is a great chill song. Some may think the song feels too slow.
Luv Bad Bs ft Brownstone
Jack 1/10 Ari 4 /10
This song feels boring and should not have been added to the album. This is a bad side of Future and it’s kind of pathetic. It disgusts me that songs like this are on an album.
Amazing (Interlude) (Skip)
The beats so far have been very solid from Metro Boomin.

All to Myself ft The weeknd
Jack 4/10 Ari 7/10
It feels like a summer song something I could listen to when driving home at night and just chillax. The Weekend kind of sells this song. It is a below average feature.
Nights Like This
Jack 8/10 Ari 8.3/10
The song is great. No huge complaints but I wish the rap verse came earlier in the song or there was another verse earlier on. However, it is a very nice combination of chorus, beat, and ad libs which makes a great chill song and kind of sad song. I will add this song to my playlist.
Came to the Party
Jack 4/10 Ari 4/10
The 808s are nice in this song. He gets right into it with the rapping, unlike most of the album where it is a slow intro to the songs. The problem with this song is that nothing really stands out, it’s like just talking and I’m not listening.
Right 4 You
Jack 6.5/10 Ari 5/10
Metro keeps adding more instruments and Future raps harder and harder, leading up to the beat drop which was disappointing. They had a crazy beat drop planned and ruined it by stopping the beat. However, I like the lyrics and overall vibe of the song. It feels a little too long.
Mile High Memories
Jack 8.25/10 Ari 6.73 /10
Crazy buildup to the beat drop. Unique instruments and hard hitting lyrics. Added to playlist.
Overload
Jack 8/10 Ari 7/10
Good beat with piano and 808s. He switches from a rapping voice to a singing voice and it suits the beat very well. It gets a little boring because he keeps the same flow through the whole song but I overall enjoy listening to this song.
Gracious
ARI HAGELBERG AND JACK DIEHL
Jack 1/10 Ari 2/10
It just is a useless song. Why was it added to the album? Don’t ask me! This is way too slow and I don’t understand the lyrics, the beat feels forced and it is overall below mediocre. I can’t imagine Future walking into the studio, recording this song, listening back to it, and still choosing to release it.
Beat it
Jack 9/10 Ari 9/10
He uses big words that sound good together, I’m hearing 3 and 4 syllable words and Future makes them all work together, it’s like hibachi in my ears.I like the sample. It does not get a 10/10 for the sole reason of an overly long outro, feels a little dragged out. Song is very enjoyable to listen to.
Always Be My Fault
Jack 0/10 Ari 0/10
Probably the worst Future song I have EVER heard. Way too slow! Way… too….. slow….
One Big Family
Jack 9.8/10 Ari 9.8/10
A long song, 4 minutes and 6 seconds, and I was entertained, bopping my head, and loving every second of it. The last .2 is lacking because it just can’t be the PERFECT song. Insane flow, great lyrics, unique beat, and good mixing makes a very very good song.
Red Leather ft J Cole
Jack 0/10 Ari 4/10
There’s just no situation where I am going to listen to a seven minute song. It’s mediocre but SO LONG. I don’t know why. I can’t listen to this slow of a song.
Overall rating of the album - 5.56/10
Final thoughts - this album had great potential, however Future wanted to ruin it by trying to be an R&B artist. If he kept with his original trap style, like he did in some of the songs, it had potential to be a great album. The weeknd was a bad influence on him because it doesn’t fit Future’s style. Overall my favorite songs on the album were One Big Family, Out Of My Hands, and This Sunday. I would suggest this album to people who like slower paced rap songs with some pieces of r&b mixed into it. •

Once Upon A Mattress is based on the famous fairytale, The Princess and the Pea. The story is set in a kingdom. It’s an unhappy one because the king, Sextimus was cursed and cannot speak, the queen, Aggravain, declared that citizens cannot wed until Prince Dauntless is married to a true princess that can pass the impossible test. After people failed upon the test, Princess Winnifred, who acted unlike a princess, appeared. She fell in love with the prince quickly, but was given an almost impossible test, to not fall asleep when there is only a pea under 20 mattresses, because only the true princess can feel the pea when sleeping. But surprisingly, after being tired out by the queen, she still cannot fall asleep which enraged the queen. But this time, they fought back and punished the queen also ending the curse. After all, the people in the kingdom lived happily ever after. •

AI IN THE NEWS

FUN FACT: Stanford does not permit using AI on any assignments
AI is a beneficial tool that can help you with your school work, answer questions, and in some cases…save lives. Medical AI is used to track diseases that humans can not yet photograph. Diseases such as skin cancer and diabetic retinopathy can be detected by AI, as well as predicting cancer survival. It can also help create more accurate medication doses. However, it will not replace healthcare professionals anytime soon.
Another story about AI saving lives is the story about an AI alerting police about a suicide. She uploaded a “suicide letter” video to Facebook making the AI send the location of her phone to the police. A police officer came to her house and was able to prevent her from attempting to commit suicide. This story about AI saving people from suicide attempts is not just a one-time thing, there are other stories such as Korea is Using Artificial Intelligence to Prevent Suicide Attempts on Bridges.
Overall, my opinion is that AI is okay to use under some circumstances. However, I think using AI in professional jobs or for all of your school work can prevent you from thinking for yourself. Getting into the habit of using AI sites like ChatGPT is not a good thing to rely on as it is not always accurate. •
HISTORY OF BLUE WHITE DAY

Allendale Columbia is known as a school that builds community and opens its students to new adventures. Back in 1963, it was two separate schools. Boys went to Allendale, while girls went to Columbia. Former students have passed on the school’s traditions. In fact, one that is coming up is Blue White Day. Blue White Day originally came from the Columbia school, but they called it a Field Day. We today dress up in either blue or white, but due to their extremely strict dress code, they would attach either a blue or white pin onto their uniform. Their games consisted of relays, sack races, and crab soccer. At this time girls were just starting to play competitive sports. There were no winners or losers, it was all for fun and for cheering on their teams. The Allendale school also had their own field day, but it looked extremely different than the girls field day. Instead of the team names blue and white, their team names were Mohawk and Apache. They would play more sport heavy events, such as, football, basketball, soccer, and baseball. The team that won was rewarded with a trophy, which is located in the Development Office. If you are interested in learning more about the history of Blue White Day, I would definitely check out the Development Office and talk to Anika Skarzynski. She will definitely answer any questions that you may have, she will also show you a collection of yearbooks from years past. •

ASK AMORA ADVICE
Starting the school year strong is key to ensuring good grades throughout the year. It can be difficult to get assignments on time if you’re not motivated, have extracurricular activities such as sports or a job, or don’t have enough time. Here are 5 tips that can help you manage your time better to achieve your academic and personal goals!

1 - ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS
Distractions can slow down your productivity, which can lead to procrastination. Removing them can allow you to work more efficiently, and break habits of procrastination. A study by Rachel Ehmke (https://childmind.org/article/kids-shouldnt-usephones-during-homework/) shows that phones distract kids and teenagers the most, and suggests setting up a phone-free homework routine is the most effective way to minimize phone-based distractions.
2 - MAKING A SCHEDULE
Creating a schedule to manage your time is a great way to organize yourself, especially if you are generally busy after school. For example, a planner is a great way to schedule your day and when you should do your work. This can create more achievable and realistic school goals.

3 - USE FREE TIME EFFECTIVELY

During the school day, everyone has a study hall at least once a day. Although no one is forcing you to work, it is a smart decision to do any homework you have during this time. Doing work while you have free time can create more time in the future, that you can use towards yourself.

4 - HAVE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Having a big workload can take up a lot of your time, which can lead to stress. Being stressed out while also constantly working is not healthy for anyone! Taking breaks can not only help you feel relieved but also help you stay productive. A person who takes breaks regularly, compared to someone who works constantly is going to be more productive because they are less burnt out.
5 - ASKING FOR HELP
If you are extremely stressed, asking teachers for help is a great idea. If you’re puzzled about something, asking for help instead of being stuck is more efficient. If you really don’t have enough time to complete an assignment, asking for an extension is helpful as well. •
