Grandparents and SpecIal Friends Day
BRI D’LALLO
At Allendale Columbia, Grandparents and Special Friends Day is a cherished tradition for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. On this special day, students invite their grandparents or other chosen friends to join them at school. For those who cannot attend in person, a virtual option is available, ensuring everyone has the chance to participate.
The day begins with a warm welcome in the dining commons, where guests can enjoy breakfast treats and coffee. Afterward, everyone gathers in the CPC for an opening assembly and welcome session, which includes an overview of the day’s schedule.
The grades are divided into two sections: Grades 1, 3, and 5 form the first group, while Kindergarten, Grade 2, and Grade 4 make up the second. Each group invites their grandparents and special friends into their classrooms to experience a typical lesson and see firsthand what the students are learning.
After their classroom visits, students and guests enjoy lunch together, creating more opportunities for connection and conversation. The day concludes with everyone returning to the CPC for a closing assembly.

ThANKSGIVING LUNCH
KATE MAY
On Thursday, November 21, Allendale Columbia held its annual Thanksgiving lunch, a beloved tradition enjoyed by many in the AC community. During each lunch session, students and staff were treated to turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy, and for dessert, the ever-popular pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. These cookies are a fan favorite and one of the most beloved desserts at AC (recipe ▶). Laura Reynolds, one of the incredible lunch staff members, gave us an inside look at what goes into preparing this special meal:
Turkey: “We cooked 140 pounds of turkey.”
Cookies: “We made about 720 pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. (Lanae Vargas helped me make them this year.)”
Stuffing: “We used 24 loaves of bread for stuffing, with help from the Kindergarten class, who tear up the bread for us.”
Cranberry Sauce: “We use 15 pounds of cranberries to make the cranberry sauce.”
This delicious lunch brings the AC community together to celebrate the season and share in the spirit of gratitude. •

years. Here’s what Wolfie had to say: Please state your full name.
“My name is Wolfie. Just Wolfie. You know, one name like Elvis, Bono, Sting, or Socrates.”
What has been your favorite performance/ Grandparents Day at AC?
“Each year is my favorite! Grandparents Day has been a wonderful tradition for such a long time, and it’s always fun to be part of an event that combines familiar, comfortable, traditional things with new ideas.”
What makes you come back to AC each year?
“I love seeing all of the children and their guests on Grandparents and Special Friends Day at AC, but I also like reconnecting with old friends who work at Allendale Columbia. Sometimes, I mix up their names, like ‘Mrs. The Small Bagel’ (Ms. DePaul-Pragel) or ‘Mr. Doorman’ (Mr. Doran). AC has the BEST people!”
How do you come up with ideas for your shows?
“Mrs. Jeffries and the Lower School faculty choose a theme for Grandparents and Special Friends Day and brainstorm ideas for the students to share with their guests. Somehow, when everyone gathers in the CPC for the opening assembly, I always show up with a scenario, story, or problem that relates to the theme. It’s just luck, I guess.”
What do you enjoy about doing the performances?
“The students at AC make it fun for me. They’re always so great at helping me solve my silly problems. For example, last year, after Mr. Doorman helped me plug in the sausage machine, the children helped me discover that my grandma’s new pillow had ended up inside the machine! That’s just one of the many silly problems I’ve faced over the years.”
Are these performances a hobby or a job? What do you like to do in your free time?
“A wise old wolf once said, ‘When you do what you love and love what you do, it’s more than just a job.’ Being Wolfie is my full-time job, and I love it. In my free time, I enjoy thinking creative, happy thoughts, trying to make the world a better place, taking naps, and practicing my howling.” •

GRATITUDE
ELLE DILORETO
Gratitude is a huge theme when it comes to the month of November. Why you may ask? Well let’s dive in!
WHAT IS GRATITUDE?
Gratitude is when you feel thankful for something that is positive or good in your life. Sometimes people take these things for granted. This could be your house, your family, food and water, your friends, etc. But gratitude is when you take the time to be grateful for the things you have or take for granted. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small. You can be grateful for anything!
WHY IS GRATITUDE IMPORTANT?
Gratitude can be related to wellbeing. There are so many positive effects of gratitude. It’s been found that gratitude is associated with social wellbeing, emotional wellbeing, and psychological well being. Have you heard of a domino effect (the cumulative effect produced when one event sets off a series of similar events, a form of chain reaction). Yeah. Gratitude can have the same effect. If a person experiences gratitude, they’re likely to recognize the help and later return the help. People who are thanked are likely to help others in the future. The opposite can be true. People who aren’t thanked, aren’t likely to help others in the future. It’s important we remember to always give gratitude and be grateful for the things we have in life and not just take them for granted.
WHY IS GRATITUDE A MAJOR THEME OF NOVEMBER?
In November, we have the chance to stop and reflect on all of the positive aspects of our lives (hence, Thanksgiving). Thanksgiving is a time we get to come together with loved ones and cherish how we’re thankful for the loved ones that surround us and other positive things we look up to in the future. November is a month that encourages us to count our blessings (big and small). It’s a time for self-reflection and a time to express
thanks for everything you’ve accomplished in life!
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO CELEBRATE GRATITUDE?
Reflect what you’re grateful for in your life and write it down! (You don’t have to share it with anyone else)
Share with some people in your life what you’re grateful for and allow them to do the same!
Play music that makes you feel grateful!
Take the time to do something you enjoy! Just being grateful for the things you like to do can make a huge impact in your life!

INTERVIEWS WITH LIFERS
JEREMIAH STRADER AND EVAN KRENZER
We interviewed several “lifers” at Allendale Columbia, students who have been here for the majority (or all) of their academic careers. We asked them a series of questions, and here are their responses.
What will you miss most about AC?
Caitlin: “Fifth grade, because of the Whale Watch trip. It was the first time I went somewhere with my friends and without my parents. Mrs. Strutt and Mr. Northrup were fun and really helped me throughout the year.”
Marina: “Mr. Northrup, because of the way he taught and the activities we did. I’ll miss all of the teachers since I’ve been here so long, and especially because my mom works here.”
Siena: “Third grade, because Mrs. Elmaker was so much fun, and so was everything else.”
Victoria: “Seventh grade, because of Pathfinder, or Lower School, because it was so much fun.”
Oliver: “Lower School, because of Ms. Mealy and Ms. Eder. It was simpler and easier back then, and I got to hang out with my friends.”
Jack: “Second grade, because everything was simpler. That’s also when we got to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
What was your favorite thing you did at AC?
Caitlin: “The activities we do as a community, like the Strawberry Breakfast and Blue White Day.”
Marina: “Everything in Nursery and Pre-K.”
Siena: “Going on the Pathfinder trip and canoeing.”
Victoria: “The beach trip from 11th grade or Blue White Day.”
Oliver: “Going to the sectional finals with the soccer team and playing alongside my brother.”
Jack: “Having deep conversations in the library room with Benji, Oliver, Eric, Evan, and

Jeremiah. We got everything off our chests and had no filter.”
Have you enjoyed your time at AC?
Caitlin: “Yes, because I’ve been able to make connections with everyone at school and had the opportunity to learn about kids in other grades.”
Marina: “Yes, because of all the memories, especially the haunted house in the Rainbow Room.”
Siena: “Yes, I really enjoyed going through and experiencing the haunted house in P.E.”
Victoria: “Yes.”
Oliver: “Yes, it has been a really good part of my life.”

Thanksgiving is about family and friends. It’s a day for gratitude and being thankful. Lots of
people enjoy the festivities around this holiday, including eating food and spending time with family. Since a lot of people (including myself) like to get into the Christmas spirit early, there are plenty of movies out there to watch with your family after you’ve eaten your favorite thanksgiving meal!

THE HOWLER AGAIN, A ShoRT STORY
The way he pedals on his bike. No care in the world. Just the fast movement of his feet circling. He does it all so effortlessly. He does everything so effortlessly. I don’t know how.
The way he eats popcorn out of the bag. His hand swooping down like an eagle catching a fish in the sea. Picking the popcorn up like a crane in a claw machine, grabbing the jumbo prize out.
The way he reads aloud. The words left his mouth in such a gentle way. Never returning back once they leave.
The way he pedaled his bike that day, falling off each time I relive the memory. The way he crashes to the ground. His sweatpants receiving a grass stain.
The way he took a handful of popcorn, then dropping some on the grass.
The way he read my written words, stuttering as he read over a line.
Let’s go back a little.
Hi, I’m Dani Brown.
I’m an unmarried detective, and I’ve been alone ever since.
But I like being alone. I think.
Anyways, I graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice eight years ago to earn my college degree to become a detective.
My parents live all the way in New York, 9,958 miles away from where I live in a tiny town called Glen Alice in Australia.
My heart has always been in Australia.
I don’t know why.
I’m not even Australian.
I wasn’t born in Australia.
I don’t have an accent, but I love it here.
I love the weather, the beaches, the food.
It’s all so --
“Dani,” my boss says to me from where I sit at my desk. I quickly close my notepad, throwing my pen down on the table.
“Yes?” I stand up, shifting the messy papers on my desk into one pile.
“What are you doing over there?”
“Just closing up the case on Tom Fisher. I still can’t believe his sister murdered him.”
“I’ve got another case for you to look into.” He
throws a file onto my desk, causing some papers to fly off onto my black spinny chair. I open the manilla folder to see what he’s given me.
“The murder of John Will. 38-year-old man murdered in Roseville Park.”
“Your suspects should be behind his bio page,” he says. I nod, giving my best fake smile, then frown as he leaves.
I brush the papers off of my chair, sitting down, spinning in circles as I stare up at the ceiling’s bright white rectangular light, whispering underneath my breath, “God, I hate my boss.”
I start the car when there’s a knock against my window. I jump out of my skin, banging my legs against the steering wheel. I look to my side to see Jacob standing in front of my car. I press the button, the window rolling down.
“What?!” I shout, annoyed that this is happening again.
“Please, just let me come with you. Just let me help you with one case. It’s my birthday and it would be nice to have another detective with you,” he begs.
“No. I don’t care if it’s your birthday or not. We’ve been over this. I do my work alone. I don’t need someone else slowing me down,” I say, not looking at him as I grab my sunglasses out of the cup holder, placing them on top of my head.
“But, I know the case already. Boss told me. I won’t slow you down.”
“Still nope,” I say, smiling.
“But --” he starts, when I press on the pedal, smiling as I zoom backward out of the parking place. “Dani!” he shouts.
“Take care, Jacob!” I say, sliding the sunglasses down over my eyes, zooming out of the car park, speeding down the road. I speed more, pressing the button on my car to make the roof come down, “Woohoo!” I shout as the wind hits my face. Laughing, I take my hair out of its ponytail, giving my head a shake, feeling free.
I finally make it to Roseville Park, hopping out of my car, slamming the door, slipping my sunglasses into the pocket of my jeans, and wandering over to where some officers stand.
“Um, hi,” I say to one of them as they turn to
look at me. “Detective Dani Brown.” I say, pulling out my badge from the pocket of my blue collared shirt, and showing it to the officer. “I’m supposed to be investigating this case.”
“Yes. We know, we’re just wrapping up a few things here. Then we should be out of your hair.”
“Great.” I smile, not showing my teeth, even though they’re clenched.
When they leave, I head over to where the body once was, looking around for clues when I hear a bell ring from the distance.
I turn around quickly, seeing a man about my age pedaling on a blue bike. The way he pedals swiftly along the grass. His feet moving in graceful circles. He moves at a fast but steady pace, my heart skipping a beat as I watch him do his sport, when it ends, in a snap, the crash as he falls to the side in slow motion, hitting the wet grass, a stain on his knee.
I take a slow inhale, letting out a long breath as I shake my head. I start walking over to him as he brushes off his knees, picking up his bike.
“Hi. Detective Dani Brown,” I say, holding up my badge.
“What is this? Did I kill someone?” He jokes with an Australian accent, laughing as I frown at him.
“I don’t know. Did you?” I say seriously.
“No. No. That was a joke.” He quickly pulls himself together. “I’m Calvin,” he says.
“Well, Calvin. This is a crime scene. You’re going to have to leave,” I say. He looks past me.
“Really? I don’t see any of that fancy tape you guys put up.” He points past me, trying to look for where the crime scene would be.
I sigh, looking behind my shoulder. “Yeah, well, it’s a crime scene whether you think it is or not, and we call that caution tape in America.”
“Ah. Well, we fellow Australians also call it caution tape,” he says matter of factly.
“Is that so?”

GE CLUB UPDATES FALL FUN AT THE INTERNATIONAL HOUSE
PETER NIU
At Allendale Columbia, students and teachers collaborate to develop their talents and achieve common goals. To support this, a variety of clubs have been organized, allowing students to choose those that align with their interests.
For example, students who enjoy playing sports and fostering teamwork can join the sports club, which offers activities like basketball and volleyball. These clubs help students improve their physical fitness, enhance collaboration, and develop well-rounded skills.
Allendale Columbia also emphasizes global awareness and community impact.

The Global Engagement Club is currently focused on studying and presenting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. These goals address critical global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and peace, helping students understand these issues and explore solutions both locally and globally. Additionally, members of the club engage in hands-on community service, such as tutoring and providing warm coats and food to refugee children at the Rochester Refugee Resettlement Center. These activities not only support vulnerable populations but also cultivate empathy and a sense of social responsibility.
Students in the club are also preparing to participate in the annual Global Citizenship Conference at Nazareth University. This event offers a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas with peers, hone critical thinking skills, and deepen their understanding of global issues.•
As many of you know, we have an International House located just a few minutes away from Allendale Columbia, where some of our international students live. Three students currently reside in the house, while the remaining international students live with host families, some of whom are AC teachers!
Like us, the students spend their Mondays through Fridays at school from 8:10 a.m. to 3:10 p.m., but have you ever wondered what a weekend is like at the International House? Here’s a glimpse!
International students are offered opportunities to participate in fun activities on the weekends if they’d like. The reason behind these activities is to give them a chance to experience the culture around Rochester, as being away from home can be a big adjustment.
For instance, on Saturday, October 26th, a little event called Fall Fun took place at the International House! The international students got to paint mini pumpkins, do other simple crafts, listen to music, and enjoy some delicious food. This event ran from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.!
I had the pleasure of attending this wonderful event, which was organized by the International House mom, Gebre Genet. We started off by playing a game of Uno, sharing some laughs, and getting to know some of the international students. There was plenty of food, including pizza, apple cider, and yummy treats like donuts, candy, cookies, and brownies. Adults had the chance to paint on canvases, while kids painted pumpkins as fun music played in the background.
I also had the pleasure of playing games with an international student named Leah, who’s from South Africa. We shared lots of laughs and had a blast playing air hockey, Jenga, and even Monopoly with others. As the event came to an end, it was time to wrap up the fun and head home.
This event was a fantastic way to celebrate fall and get to know some of the international students who have moved to Rochester, New York. •

HOW DO SHOW APPRECIATION TOWARDS YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate it than by showing how much thanks you have for your family and friends! Here are a few different ways to show appreciation for the people you care about.
1 - LETTER
Write a letter about how much you appreciate what your friends and family do for you. Writing a letter feels more personal and thoughtful than writing a text or saying, “Thank you”. A study by UNC shows that writing a letter shows that you have thought out your words, and can make a person feel more loved and valued. Here are some ideas to start your letter:
- Thanks for never asking for reasons or explanations when all I wanted was a long hug and a few laughs.
- Thank you for always giving me the extra push I needed.
- Thank you for having confidence in my abilities.

2 - GIFTS
Along with your letter, a gift could further your display of appreciation. Who doesn’t feel good when they receive a gift out of appreciation? Giving/Receiving a personal gift releases serotonin and dopamine, which are chemicals that make you feel happy. A few ideas for thankyou gifts:
- Flowers
- Basket with chocolate

3 - BONDING TIME
Spending time with loved ones is a great way to express your love for them. Creating memories with people close to you can create stronger bonds, boost your overall happiness, and develop a positive relationship. Ideas on where to go:
- Restaurant
- Class on a skill (Cooking, Arts, Writing Workshops)
- Cat Cafes
- Museum
- Movies •
