After a long, cold, dreary winter, I, like you, welcome the arrival of spring. It is a time of activities like gardening, traveling and just getting outdoors. With the birds chirping and flowers and trees blooming, how could you not feel excited about this renewal in nature and ourselves.

Make sure to take advantage of this time by becoming more active in whatever way works for you. We continue our focus on a healthy lifestyle with an article on better ways to gain greater benefit from exercise workouts. With the spring weather upon us we also give some advice on dealing with the attendant allergy season.

Overnight “Day Care” now being offered

by SarahCare of the Lehigh Valley SarahCare of the Lehigh Valley is now offering an evening program for community-based individuals with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and who may be frail and require supervision and assistance at night. Participants in this program spend the overnight hours in a safe and stimulating environment and participate in a uniquely designed program that brings together health, social and other supportive services in a friendly and home-like atmosphere. Family caregivers are able to remain at home and attend to personal matters and get a good night’s sleep with the full peace of mind that their loved one is lovingly cared for by SarahCare’s professional staff.

This overnight program, which is similar in content to that which SarahCare has provided during the day for over four years now in their Allentown center, is designed to help participants maintain their functionality and actually delay their placement into nursing homes.

Additionally, the program enables overburdened caregivers to better address other needs and obligations they have and to avoid burnout. SarahCare is committed to working with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Office of Long Term Living and Lehigh County’s Aging and Adult Services team to expand and enhance Older Adult Daily Living Centers to keep older adults in their homes as long as possible.

ANSWER: True. Tossing the salt shaker is not the whole answer. That’s because most of the salt we eat comes from processed foods -- such as deli meats and canned foods. The best advice is to change your taste for salt. Don’t automatically salt before tasting. Use herbal seasonings and condiments to flavor your foods. Pretty soon, things will begin to taste too salty and you’ll be on the right track.

Cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis in later life. True or False?

ANSWER: False. Depending on your point of view, knuckle-popping sounds disgusting or cool. There is no evidence that cracking your knuckles inflames the joints and leads to arthritis.

The cracking causes the bones to pull apart, forming a gas bubble and breaking the adhesive seal in the joint.

Nothing gets you ripped faster; this type of training turns your body into a fat burning machine.

3. Break tradition - Forget old school lifting routines that have you isolating body parts on different days and lifting heavy. These sadly outdated types of workouts are by far the biggest time wasters out there. They are also the least effective in making improvements in your physical fitness level and burning fat while leading the way in causing injury.

How to Prevent Spring Allergy Symptoms

by Vicki Bezems, Lifestyles over 50 Now that the cold weather has broken and the days are growing longer, we are more than ready to spend time outside.

The garden needs tending, the grass needs mowing, the kids and grandkids are playing sports; it’s nice to feel the warmth of the sun again, or go for a walk through the neighborhood after dinner.

But along with spring comes pollen and mold, which can trigger moderate to severe allergy symptoms. Here are some practical ideas for minimizing those reactions, which can cause everything from itchy eyes to fever and flu-like symptoms.

Keep your doors and windows closed. If the weather becomes too warm, use the air conditioning.

Do a thorough spring cleaning in your house.

Wash and dry bed linens inside once a week – inside.

Dust and vacuum often.

Wear a filter mask when you work outside, especially mowing the grass.

Always shower and wash your hair after spending time outside.

Keep your car windows closed.

Wash and groom indoor pets regularly.

Take allergy medications at least 30 minutes before any outdoor activity.

Use saline spray or wash to clear nasal passages.

Health Care Reform Facts

While our unseasonably warm spring is certainly a welcome relief from the bitter cold and snow of the past winter, it is causing headaches for one segment of our population. Allergy sufferers are enduring one of the worst springs in years. If you suffer from spring allergies, be sure to take your medicines and limit the time you spend outdoors during those days when pollen counts are especially high.

Understanding the new health insurance reform law passed by Congress in March is another source of headaches for many seniors. If you’re confused about the new law, you’re hardly alone. With all the political squabbling in Washington, we’ve have heard far too little about how reforms will actually work. But whatever your reaction to the noisy debate in Washington, it’s a safe bet that the new law will affect you.

Some of what you need to know: • •

If you pay for your medications out of your own pocket, your benefits under Medicare Part D will improve because it will close the gap known as the doughnut hole.

If you have a chronic condition or previous illness and seek health coverage on your own, insurance companies will no longer be allowed to turn you down or charge excessive premiums.

If you are planning for future long-term care needs, you can participate in a voluntary insurance program to help people remain independent for as long as possible.

Starting this year, consumers who have been unable to buy insurance because of pre-existing conditions may be eligible for a temporary program offering affordable coverage. Insurers also will be prohibited from imposing lifetime benefit caps or unreasonable annual limits, and will be prohibited from cutting off coverage when you get sick. In 2014, insurance companies will no longer deny you coverage because of a preexisting condition. Instead, individuals—just like members of Congress—will have access to a choice of insurance options through a marketplace of new, more affordable plans.

Independent living is another priority of the new law. States will get financial help to expand home- and community-based services. And people may participate in a new, voluntary insurance program that helps cover the supports they may need one day to stay out of a nursing home. This program, known as CLASS -- for Community Living Assistance Services and Supports -- will collect premiums through payroll deductions of those who participate.

Perhaps most importantly, here’s what’s not changing under health insurance reform; The law explicitly prohibits any cuts to seniors’ guaranteed Medicare benefits. It is not possible to summarize in this small space all the ways that older residents will be affected by the new health insurance reforms. I believe you should do what you can to learn what the new provisions mean for your situation. Many websites offer useful information about the law, including www. aarp.org/getthefacts. Please do your homework. Clearly understanding these different benefits may prove extremely valuable for you and your family. In the meantime, I wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and grandmothers. Be sure to get out and enjoy the warm weather--as long as the high pollen counts do not bother you.

AARP — a stronger voice for change

The new law will help seniors who are paying thousands of dollars out of their own pocket for their medications because they’ve fallen into the Medicare Part D coverage gap or “doughnut hole.” This year Pennsylvanians in the coverage gap will get a $250 rebate. Next year, they will get a 50% discount on brand name drugs and within 10 years, the coverage gap will be eliminated.

Starting next year, patients in Medicare can get annual wellness check-ups free of charge, along with important preventive services, such as screenings for cancer and diabetes.

Consumers of private health insurance also will qualify for free health screenings, a change from the past practice of charging co-payments.

Wolf Santuary in PA

Situated on 120 acres of native woodland in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, the Wolf Sanctuary of PA is home to over 40 wolves, almost all of which were rescued from across the state.

Public tours are available throughout the year on Saturdays and Sundays at noon.

Weekday tours are available by calling ahead for a reservation.

The sanctuary is spread over 22 acres. On tour you will learn that wolves live in packs, and there are several packs living here. Each pack has their own large fenced area.

Wolves cannot arbitrarily enter an existing pack because they will fight. Wolves are loyal to their own pack, not to other wolves. Within each pack there is an Alpha, a Beta and so on, down to the Omega. The Alpha is in ‘charge’, Beta is usually the disciplinarian, and Omega is usually picked on.

Alpha is the first to eat, then Beta, down the line. It is also necessary to separate out the sick, wounded or older.

A guide walks with you from one enclosure to the next, and coaxes the wolves to the fences with dog treats or meat scraps. The guided tour is about 1 hour. It is amazing how they interact with the tour guides as well as with each other. The sanctuary does not treat its wolves as pets but as individuals with distinct identities. Each wolf is given a name, not that the wolf cares, but so that the volunteers can better monitor the health and safety of the animals.

Almost every animal was taken from unlicensed owners who were caught by the game commission. You will meet Glacier whose grandfather was one of the three wolves that played the wolf “Two Socks” in the movie Dances with Wolves. How did Glacier wind up at the sanctuary? Someone decided to keep him in her small apartment which is a bad idea and against the law.

Most of the wolves you will meet have some dog in them.

In PA if the animal is 65% or more wolf then it is considered a wolf. Less than that is called a hybrid. The tour guide said that hybrids are the more dangerous to work with because they are more unpredictable and the volunteers who feed, water, cleanup and care for these animals must be especially

wary when working in the hybrid enclosure. It doesn’t really matter though, what percent wolf they are, since the sanctuary isn’t about purity. It was founded so that these mistreated and misunderstood animals would have a place to live out their lives in much better conditions.

The big challenge is funding (of course) and the way the pens must be constructed to meet state law. Wolves are prolific diggers, so the fences must be buried a minimum of three feet below the surface. They also have to be a certain height. As you can imagine - it gets costly to meet these requirements. The sanctuary receives zero tax dollars.

Everything is run by volunteers and funded by donations.

Can you hear the wolves howl? Yep, yep, yep… although popular culture has us believing that a wolf ’s howl is always a perfect, melodious howl, you will learn that sometimes, it’s more of a yap or a bark, a squeal or a yip. The first time we heard a whole pack of wolves howling, we froze in our tracks - not out of fear, but wonder. Although we heard versions of this wolf call many times on TV or movies, here in person, it sounds so utterly mesmerizing.

Boutique Provides Hope and Friendship

In June of 2009 Esther Courtright and her friend, Caterina Hawk, opened Strands of Hope, a wig and headwear boutique for women experiencing hair loss. Both women wanted it to be Esther Courtright and Caterina Hawk more than just a specialty wig shop. They wanted to create a warm and private place where women who are expecting hair loss could go, not only for headwear and makeup, but also for friendship, understanding, and emotional healing.

Esther and Caterina felt that they had the right skills and experience to offer women a unique service. Esther was a breast cancer survivor of three years. She was a long-time client of Millennia Salon & Spa and received tremendous support and comfort from Caterina and her staff during her cancer journey. Caterina had cared for, and lost, her own mother-in-law during her battle with cancer. “Women who are diagnosed with cancer of any kind go through profound emotional turmoil. They’re frightened about their diagnosis and what their treatment may entail. Their hair and their appearance may change, and even though it is temporary, it can be devastating. We want them to have a private place, a woman’s place, not just to select a wig, but where the process can be enjoyable,” Esther says.

During her illness, Esther found it helpful to rely on other cancer survivors who shared their experiences: what worked and what did not. Esther wants women who come to Strands of Hope to see in her someone who has been through treatment and has recovered. She says, “I’m hoping they’ll see in me someone who’s on the other side. I’ll cry with them, but I’m hoping they’ll see that life goes on; that cancer does not take away your beauty.”

There is no limit to the amount of time that Caterina and Esther are willing to spend with their clients, and they spend much of the time just talking and sharing.

“One woman was here for three hours, she felt so comfortable being here. When she

came in she was scared; but when she left, she felt good about the wig she had gotten and the time she had spent with us.”

Caterina and Esther help their clients explore the multitude of options available to them. Once they have picked out a wig, Caterina will style and trim it at no extra charge. Clients also like to have a variety of head covers to wear. Strands of Hope sells turbans, scarves, hats, and headbands as well as wigs. “People will come in for a scarf and leave with a cute hat or accessories,” Caterina relates. Some women like to change their style completely. They recall an 83-year old who did not lose her hair but nevertheless decided to buy a wig, in a style called “Hot Ticket.”

Esther and Caterina encourage their clients to bring family members in to help them choose a wig. Esther recalls a woman in her forties who came in with her 10- and 13year old daughters, “The girls knew their mother was about to start chemotherapy and were still frightened by the idea that their mother had cancer. They were anxious about the possibility that her appearance might change. Letting them help select a wig and put turbans and accessories together made them feel that they had a part in their mom’s treatment.

The girls themselves even tried on wigs and hats along with their mother.

We like to talk about it. I wanted to find purpose in going through cancer and chemotherapy, and my purpose is helping others who have to go through it. We want women to know that even though they have lost their hair, they still have their pretty eyes and complexion, and their beauty.” Caterina responds, “It makes me realize what’s important in life.”

How to Choose a Rehabilitation Facility

The rehabilitation team that a patient selects can strongly impact his or her recovery. It is important to choose a posthospital care provider with a proven track record of success and commitment to quality care. The combined efforts of physical, occupational and speech therapies with rehabilitative nursing, social services, dietary and sound medical direction provide the necessary components and support for successful rehabilitation.

The following are some guidelines to consider when choosing a post-hospital care provider: • Rehabilitative Services: Is physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy offered on-site? Do they have experience with your specific condition? Is therapy geared toward individual needs? Does therapy have hours? Is therapy offered on weekends?

• Environment: Are the accommodations clean and comfortable? Is it an appropriate environment to enhance development of skills?

• Staff: Is the staff courteous, positive and attentive? Does there appear to be a high morale among staff? Does the facility team meet regularly to ensure coordination of efforts? Do they communicate regularly with family members and physicians?

• Medical Care: What physicians are affiliated with the facility? Is there a physician available in an emergency?

Are care plans individualized to fit each patient’s needs?

• Dietary Services: Are there various menu items to accommodate personal preferences or specialized diets? Is there a registered dietitian?

• Continuum of Care: Is both short-term and extended care offered? Do they offer inpatient and outpatient services? Do they offer a home evaluation prior to discharge and assistance with discharge planning?

Most important is to consider is whether the facility has a proven track record of success in returning patients home.

• Outcomes/Evidence: How many patients with your specific problem have they treated? How does the center measure the progress a patient makes? What evidence shows their team’s success in improving a patient’s ability to care for themselves, stand, walk, etc.? What evidence shows their team’s success in helping patients and families confidently manage at home?

We Grow Daily

As I scanned my brain for some things we did as kids, for fun or just something to do, I remembered joining the gang for boys’ or girls’ games. We were kids, but we had a couple of special girls we eyed as we participated in the games. We were center city kids; we were always doing something. Some of my playmates are still around, and occasionally I see them or visit them and enjoy talking about things we did when we were together.

Radio was the big thing to listen to, and we listened for our favorite programs. Life was so laid back, and most programs were about family life. Movies were family oriented, and the whole family went together to see a show.

The language was clean, but that’s all over and gone. What happened to those shows that made life enjoyable? Today we see previews of coming attractions on TV. They are mostly gun play or fire, and explosions and sex and murders, so common we don’t even seem bothered by it.

As for me, the ways people lived and tolerated life in gentle and easy paced living are still the best: the beauty of growing things; good music; a family where God is honored and a wife who cooks and prepares good homemade meals, and the family sits together to eat and talk about anything in a peaceful way. The memories of Mom’s homemade meals cover a multitude of goodies that can never be compared to restaurant food. I enjoy going out to eat, but always with someone special or friends because the camaraderie makes all food taste better than eating alone. Now, getting back to games we played (gee, that list would be almost endless if I tried to name them all) but I’ll name some: pocket knife baseball, jacks, wicky, tag, may I, red light, run sheep run,

guessing games, hop scotch, checkers, Parcheesi, three legged races, quoits, one-acatch, tag, hang man, tic tac toe, blind mans bluff. These are just a few of those games we played, and they didn’t require any special equipment, just the joy of being part of the neighborhood bunch.

As time passed and we grew up, and families moved and the boys paid more attention to girls in our age group, teenagers heading for the twenties, it was a wonderful time of life for me: roller skating, going to amusement parks with guys and gals, dancing or picnics or some outdoor entertainment in the area, as some of the boys had cars and we all piled in and enjoyed each other’s company. A radio playing songs from the hit parade -- we sang along and it was a fun time for all. We usually headed for some small nearby town where an ice cream festival was being held, maybe at a church or the town park where a group sang and played instruments; and naturally, boys met girls and it was just a pleasant summer Saturday night. Our group of guys and gals were a happy group and enjoyed the refreshments being sold, and at our age we ate nonstop.

And soon my heart was set on one girl, and I learned to like her ways and everything about her. I fell in love with my brown eyed doll and we were engaged and married at 22 years of age. After three years of marriage, we decided to have children. God gave us a daughter and a son, and we had a happy family and honored God as a family. And to this day, we share a God given love for each other. What a blessing their families are to me.

Are you aware that there are a dozen things you need to be aware of this month?

Some of them are Ultraviolet, Arson, MCS, Canadian Immunization, Hurricanes, and Digestive Diseases.

Every month has its share of “Awareness” campaigns, good causes that need our attention. There are so many life-changing events and concerns that even an Awareness Awareness Month couldn’t keep track of them. Members of these groups want us to know about the dangers so we can avoid them.

There is one danger lurking out there most people may not be aware of; in fact, the leader of this group prefers that you not recognize the symptoms of his work so he and his forces can be more effective. We need to “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

One of Satan’s favorite tools is to hide behind our unbelief. He prefers that we are not aware of, or even deny, his existence and that of his demon cohorts. Like the Invisible Man or The Shadow, he can be more effective if no one knows he’s there.

Satan has an even better trick than invisibility and anonymity. Paul warned the church against infiltration: “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness” (2 Corinthians 11:13–15). The devil can appear as a spiritual authority, indistinguishable at first from a genuine believer. Once he’s accepted as legitimate and gains the trust of the unsuspecting, he can work his evil, perverting the Word of God to his advantage, as he tried with Adam and Eve and even Jesus (Genesis 3; Matthew 4).

Sometimes, Satan works in spectacular ways. Speaking of the antichrist, Paul warned, “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders” (2 Thessalonians 2:9). Jesus shocked the disciples with these words: “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24).

Other times, the devil works subtly, taking advantage of the open doors of wrong actions and attitudes, such as unforgiveness, anger, and marital strife.

How can we identify the enemy? “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20). When Scripture is disregarded, distorted, denied or disobeyed, the prince of darkness is at work. Be aware!

Our defense against the tactics of the evil one is familiarity with, and faith in, the bible. Faith protects us against his deceitful darts, and we can parry his tempting thrusts by quoting and obeying Scripture (Ephesians 6). Let this month and every month be Satan Awareness Month!
