There is a saying that you do not appreciate your health until you do not have it. This month’s article about the musician, RJ Ross, brings this home with power. His amazing battle with a deadly disease should give us all inspiration to never give up, to battle against the odds no matter how hopeless the challenge may seem.

I have met many of you readers in my travels throughout the Valley and you have said that our column on things to do with your grandkids is a favorite. Because of that we decided to make it a regular feature. A number of you also said that you really enjoy the humor that we put in the magazine. So, we will keep feeding you more “funnies.” Please keep giving us feedback. It is your magazine.

July Fourth - America’s Most Celebrated Secular Holiday

The Fourth of July “...ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other...”

– John Adams History of Independence Day Festivities July 4, 1776 -- Members of the Second Continental Congress, which met in Philadelphia, finalized the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration was read to the public in various American cities, as crowds cheered and celebrated.

1777 – The people of Philadelphia remembered the 4th of July by ringing bells, firing guns, lighting candles, and setting off firecrackers. However, July 4th celebrations were kept modest while the War of Independence continued.

1783 – The war ended and July 4th became a holiday in some places. In Boston, it replaced March 5, anniversary of the Boston Massacre, as the major patriotic holiday with speeches, military events, parades, and fireworks marking the day.

In Washington, D.C., and across the country, the Fourth brings fireworks displays of every magnitude. Fireworks originated in ancient China and were introduced in Europe

by Italian and French merchants. The famed Capt. John Smith brought them to America in the early 17th Century.

(Ironically, Smith returned to England after getting burned in a gunpowder accident.)

Other interesting celebrations include the American Indian rodeo and three-day pow-wow in Flagstaff, Arizona, and the candle festival in Lititz, Pennsylvania, where hundreds of candles are floated in water and a “Queen of Candles” is chosen.

Write a Living Will - Get Peace of Mind

Illness, severe injury and death are really delicate subjects that, by their very nature, are very difficult to talk about.

However, by preparing in advance, you can ensure that you receive the exact medical treatment that you want.

If you decide to take advantage of the benefits of living wills, you should at the very least involve serious discussions with family, friends and your doctor, putting forward your views in a reassuring and practical manner. This should obviously include your views concerning health care and how you want to be dealt with in certain situations.

Of course, your views may not be met with the universal approval of your family or friends, in which case, it would be prudent to appoint someone of similar views to carry out the terms of the will, making decisions that would be in accordance with your beliefs should you be incapable. Perhaps your arguments will make family members or friends think twice about making living wills themselves.

Core Strengthening is Essential for a Healthy Body

People of all ages want to get the most out of their health and physical activities. One of the most important factors in maximizing health for physical activity is core strength.

In athletics, an athlete with a strong core is a strong athlete; it’s that simple. Whether you enjoy golf, biking or walking core strength is important.. One of the most important factors in maximizing athletic performance is core strength. An athlete with a strong core is a strong athlete; it’s that simple.

Let me explain to you just what the core is and why core strength is so very important for any athlete. The core is comprised of nearly 30 different muscles that basically wrap around your body in the area between your hips and rib cage.

There are a couple of ways to think about this in easy terms.

First of all think of your body in two halves, the lower half and the upper half. The core area is between the two and can be thought of as a ‘bridge’ that connects them.

In order for the upper and lower body to work together requires that connection. Another visual is to think of the rebar in a foundation. Imagine that your core area is just like the foundation of a house. When not trained, it is a foundation without its rebar and one likely to weaken and cause problems, while a conditioned core is a strong and sturdy foundation with rebar.

The core is fundamental to all body movement. You hardly make a movement without engaging your core whether it be walking up the stairs or bending down to pick something up. Your core is involved, providing you with balance and stability. The strength, or weakness, or your core will dictate how easy or difficult these movements are.

So, what does this have to do with your athletic performance? Absolutely everything. When you are moving through your sport of choice you are using your body as a whole. You are using your lower body and your upper body together; you’re jumping, throwing, twisting, hitting, running, the list goes on and on. Your core is the basis for all of this movement and once again the strength or weakness of that core will dictate the ease in which you move on the field or court. Athletes are also very often in unstable environments, like landing on one foot or throwing or hitting

from an awkward position. I cannot honestly think of a sport where this stability and balance does not come into play.

Your balance comes from your core; strong core equals good balance.

Here are some examples: Think of the volleyball player jumping and spiking. The spike is literally being performed in mid air; can a situation be less stable? The power for that spike must come from the core! Think of the shortstop that runs to catch a grounder and then must jump, twist and throw all at the same time, again, ALL core! Think of the tennis player who runs across the court and then smashes a return to the opposite side, ALL core! I could go on and on with every single sport and just about every position but you get the idea. If you do not train for core strength and balance you will never realize your full potential. More and more athletes are training this way and if you ignore this vital aspect of athletic training you will be out-played.

Fortunately, core training is not difficult nor time consuming and it does not require expensive equipment.

Athletes are downright thrilled to be doing something other than ‘lifting’ anyway. Core training is innovative, challenging and creative; heck, it’s fun! Of course when the athletes and coaches see the results, which come quickly with this type of training, the excitement really builds.

$250 Rebate for Donut Hole

Summer is my favorite time of year. I absolutely love spending quiet afternoons catching up with friends while sipping tall glasses of iced tea. Life seems to slow down a bit, and folks spend more time outdoors gardening, walking, picnicking or just socializing.

These days, there’s another reason to welcome summer’s arrival. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently began mailing the first $250 rebate checks to those people in Medicare Part D who reached the prescription drug coverage gap, otherwise known as the doughnut hole.

The rebate is a part of the new health insurance law passed earlier this year in Washington, and is the first step in the gradual closing of the doughnut hole that will make prescription drugs more affordable. Starting in 2011, people who reach the coverage gap will receive a 50 percent discount on brand-name drugs. By 2020, the doughnut hole will be eliminated entirely.

With all the attention surrounding the rebate checks, it’s very important to protect yourself against scam artists. If someone says they can help you get your check more quickly if you pay a fee, report them immediately to the police or Attorney General.

You may be able to save additional money on your prescription drugs by spending a few minutes online.

When you enter the name of each of your drugs, its dosage, and how often you take it into AARP’s Doughnut Hole Calculator (www.aarp.org/doughnuthole), you can identify less costly drugs available in your Part D plan. You can also print out a personalized letter that will help you begin a conversation with your physician about switching to lowercost alternatives.

Closing the doughnut hole is especially important since the costs of prescription drugs continue to skyrocket. A new AARP survey shows a 9.7 percent jump in manufacturer prices for brand name drugs widely used by people in Medicare over the past year, the largest spike on record.

More than 3 million people fall into the doughnut hole each year, including more 189,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Pennsylvania. Millions more live in fear of reaching this expensive gap in coverage. Research shows that people who have trouble paying for their prescription drugs are more likely to skip doses or stop taking their medications altogether, which can lead to more serious health problems.

The good news is you don’t have to do anything to receive a $250 rebate check. Medicare tracks drug costs for you, and will automatically send you a check once you reach the Part D coverage gap.

If you think you’ve reached the doughnut hole and don’t receive your check within a few months, talk to Medicare folks and have your receipts handy. Rebate checks will be mailed to the address Social Security uses to reach you. If you need to change your address, please call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. You can also report a change of address by calling or visiting your local Social Security office.

Body Detoxification: What You Need to Know

Detoxifying your body, detox diets, whole body cleansing…. What does it all mean? And do you need it? The information available on detoxifying your body is only as limited as the internet, TV infomercials, and the supermarket magazine rack.

If you are interested in cleansing your body, it is possible to begin by identifying the major contributors of toxins in your diet and environment, and reducing your intake of these substances.

Methods of Detoxing Your Body There are a wide range of diets and regimens for cleansing your body from the inside out. Like any diet or discipline, the best ones for you are those that you are comfortable with. The

Victory over Cancer

You have spoken of your “fierceness” in battling cancer. Describe what you mean by “fierceness”.

by Art Villafane, Lifestyles over 50 I was driving across a bridge and realized it was up to me to take charge. That was my defining moment. Up to that point I read about RJ Ross a while back and found his story inspiring. RJ is a musician who is so well respected that he is I walk like a stooped, old man, but the moment I changed my called “Professor” because of his skill and knowledge of music. attitude I started to walk straight and tall, determined to beat I listened to his most recent CD “Face to Face” – a wonderful this cancer. I would not take no for an answer. You don’t tell me it is incurable. After a year and a half of alternative treatments mix of his jazz and smooth jazz compositions. and several difficult and painful surgeries I was diagnosed free of cancer.

What do you say to others who might have a health challenge similar to yours?

Be sure to get multiple opinions, become proactive in your own health, take charge, and put together your own team. No one doctor can know everything about an illness. You need to speak to as many as you can to be able to control your own health.

Are there songs on “Face to Face” that speak to your battle with illness?

There are a few about courage: “Like a Circle” and “Face to Face”. “I’m On My Way” is about being alive in the moment.

What I found most interesting was that RJ had been diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer some years ago.

Against all odds, he beat the cancer. I spoke with him via phone and discussed his battle with this deadly disease.

You received a frightening diagnosis 5 years ago. Your understanding was that it was incurable. What happened?

I had no symptoms or discomfort at all. A small mass was discovered in my abdomen and diagnosed as a Stage 4 cancer (the most advanced stage – there is no Stage 5) and inoperable. I was shocked at first, but I was lucky to have family and friends immediately come to offer support. I was so overcome by their love that I cried, not from pity for myself, but because I had never opened my heart to receive such love and support.

What did you do next?

I immediately looked for second and third opinions. I also looked for alternative treatments. I would not accept that a doctor can tell me it is over for me. Eventually I found Dr. Michael Broffman in Montana. He said that I did have a sarcoma, but that it was possible to operate to remove it even though the surgery was very difficult and risky.

Fortunately it was a slow moving cancer so I had time to research my options, try alternative medicines, and decide what to do. I stopped work, bought a home and played my music as a form of therapy.

Earlier this year I wrote about clearing out the medicine cabinet and reviewing your medication expiration dates. Now, is the time to pull out the sunscreens and check their expiration date. When looking for a sunscreen, you want to have a broad spectrum product, with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher.

When applying your sunscreen, do not forget your lower legs and feet. It is important to protect your feet from the sun’s rays since skin cancer can occur on the feet and lower legs. It is important to look over your skin on a regular basis, looking for any changes.

Men and women over the age of 50 are at greater risk, but skin cancer can be found at any age. Risk factors for skin cancer are fair complexion, exposure to UV light, severe sunburns, atypical or multiple moles and family history.

There are two types of skin cancer, melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. The melanoma skin cancers can spread to other parts of your body. Melanoma is the more dangerous type of skin cancer. It can affect the legs and feet, as well as other parts of your body. Common locations for melanomas on the feet are on the sole of the foot, between the toes and even under the nail.

The ABCD’s of skin cancer is a reminder of what to look for. Asymmetrical lesions, Border irregularity, Color variation and Diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser. Early detection is very important. Lesions that become raised when they were once flat are suspicious. Lesions that have a change in sensation- such as itching, burning, pain or tenderness are suspicious lesions. Lesions that are scaling or bleeding or have drainage are suspicious lesions.

What should you do if you find a suspicious lesion? Call and make an appointment with a medical professional.

Typically an excision or biopsy/sample of the skin will be taken. This will be sent to a laboratory where it will be examined and identified. Additional removal of skin/tissue and treatment may be necessary. Early detection of skin cancer is very important, so do not ignore any changes in your skin.

Roy’s Reminiscence

Looking Back

Many times I find a place of serenity at my son Carl’s place in Vera Cruz, as he owns some acreage in the mountains.

In warm weather I love to sit and enjoy the quietness and the activities of wildlife -- birds, deer, groundhogs, pigeons, bluebirds, and large birds with long legs, as they fly along the creek that runs through his property. They are looking for fish.

There is always wildlife doing their thing, looking for food or a place of refuge. The trees are now in full leaf and wild flowers in bloom. We call them weeds, but everything in God’s creation has a use and a reason for being on this earth.

Sometimes we call them pesky, but at the right time and place they belong to a part of civilization as we know it.

My dad took us kids fishing often, showed us how to dig our own worms for bait, and taught us patience. He showed us the different kind of trees and what the different wood was used for: nut trees, walnut, hickory, butternut, hazelnut; and (wild) fox grape vines that were good to eat. And if we were at a lake or still water we looked for flat stones to skip or bounce over the water. When they sank, we counted the ripples as the circles grew bigger till they reached the shore.

Remembering all these things our parents taught us, and the care and appreciation of everything, has been a part of my life to this day. Dad was a millwright at Macks for 40 some years. He kept all the wood working tools sharp and in working order. He taught me how to hold and use a hand saw, how to use a hammer, and ways to build things or repair worn parts.

had street cleaners with large cans on wheels to hold the dirt. Merchants had many horse drawn vehicles, so the street cleaners were kept busy. We also had street washers; they flushed the streets regularly.

Hamilton Street was always busy, as people from the suburbs did most of their shopping there because all of the different merchants were on both sides of the street.

There were always people looking for bargains, and many out-of-towners spent the day there shopping and eating at many good restaurants at numerous locations; and it was easy to get a trolley car to take you home with your many purchases. The carfare was cheap -- no cars to park and you met your friends there and just enjoyed your day in town.

All those good old days are now just a memory, but the memories linger in my mind. Thinking about happy times that we enjoyed together -- and I lived right in the center of the activities -- makes me feel that God blessed me with a clear mind to be able to tell my readers, that’s the way it was.

Oooh! Aahh!

We are officially in fireworks season. This time of year brings out the biggest and best peaceful pyrotechnics man can manufacture.

Dogs bark, cats slink, children cry, birds fly, and the unappreciative talk on cell phones while audiences “Oooh!” and “Aahh!” at the rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air.

There is something captivating about the bright light spectacles and booming loud sounds that fill us with awe and appreciation. We experience a mild fear that is sugarcoated by the beauty of the display of power and majesty in a wellplanned and finely tuned fireworks program. Except for monosyllabic “Oooh!”s and “Aahh!”s, we are left speechless.

Several years ago, I took a study trip to the Middle East.

We spent weeks exploring ancient ruins, many dating back to around 3000 B.C. The very antiquity of the sites held us in an indescribable awe, reducing us to brilliantly academic observations, like “Cool!” and “Wow!” Yet, when I took a side trip to Paris, I was left breathless at my first sight of the famous Eiffel Tower. It’s not that old, it’s somewhat funny looking, but I think it was the celebrity of the structure that captivated me. We are affected the same way when in the presence of a movie star or other famous person. We also usually lose that sense of awe when we become more familiar with the person, place or thing that initially captivated us.

We are surrounded daily by awe-inspiring structures and people and events that should keep us in a continuous attitude of wonder, the most marvelous of them being—us!

There is nothing more amazing than a human being! Under the direction of God Himself, David wrote, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well” (Psalm 139:14).

David’s innermost being stood in awe of God for all His works, especially the creation of mankind. His soul “Ooohed” and “Aahhed” at the thought.

The marvels of creation go beyond a look in the mirror.

If we paid as much attention to the rest of the world around us as we do to ourselves, we would wade in a never-ending stream of fascination with all creatures great and small. Psalm 104:24 gives a taste of the majesty of Creation as celebrated in the entire psalm: “O LORD, how manifold are your works!

In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” Read the entire psalm with eyes and heart wide open, and you will never take Creation for granted again.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to recapture those youthful days when you could crouch on the sidewalk and lazily watch the ants crowd around a fallen popsicle stick or experience the only-too-human wonder of looking at the country’s biggest hole in the ground with the most unimaginative place name and have the grandeur of the Grand Canyon forever etched in your memory?

I can’t imagine that even cell-phone zone-outs would imagine the fireworks just randomly happened at such a particular time and manner. The precision and design of the spectacle point to the brilliance of engineers and technicians.

How much more do the wonders of Creation point to the infinite wisdom of a Creator.

As frightening and overpowering as storms, huge animals, and such can be, there is a beauty about them all. I recommend searching the internet for science, space, and nature sites containing photos of the sea, sky, insects, invertebrates, clouds, cells, molecules, mollusks, flora, fauna, and anything else you can think of. I guarantee you will never run out of “Oooh!”s and “Aahh!”s!

Individuals at risk of heart disease, particularly smokers and those with high ”bad” cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes, must be very cautious before tackling a strenuous gardening project.

“Even people who are completely healthy and in excellent physical condition are injured while gardening,” Marcy Schander, Senior Director of Rehabilitation at ManorCare – Bethlehem 2029 said. “Back and muscle strain are major concerns. Turning over the garden, especially after a long wet winter, is strenuous work and should be approached slowly and deliberately.”

Gardening uses all the major muscle groups - legs, buttocks, shoulders, stomach, arms, neck and back - all get a workout. Schander offers some safety tips to follow while you get your garden ready this spring: • • •

If you have a history of heart trouble, speak to your physician before you begin working in the garden.

Take the time to do some back stretches before you begin. This includes before mowing.

Lift with your legs bent, not your back. Keep your back straight. By bending into the movement, you’ll keep your spine upright and less stressed. Don’t pick up too much potting soil or mulch at once. Scoop up half a shovel full or less, or purchase smaller, more manageable bags.

If you have a bad back, consider having a raised “container” garden that allows you to sit or stand upright while you tend your plants.

Rest frequently, wear sunscreen and make sure you get enough to drink.

AARP Safe Driver Course for drivers 50 years old and older, will be held at Traditions of Hanover, an independent retirement community at 5300 Northgate Dr., Bethlehem, on July 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A complimentary lunch will be served on both days. Cost for AARP members, with proof of membership, $12. Non-members $14.
