Breaking News!!!

ATIM Editor in Chief Viviana Puello Awarded Grand Medal of Honor and Honorary Membership by NAFA for her relevant contribution to fine arts and culture through her work with ArtTour International Magazine, ATIM Web TV and the Vivid Arts Network.

Written by Jonathan Xuereb ArtTour International Magazine is very proud to announce the recent and welldeserved accomplishment of our Editor in Chief, Viviana Puello. The awarding institution is none other than the National Fine Art Association (NAFA), the most authoritative organization for the arts in Brazil. NAFA is a nonprofit institution dedicated to promoting fine arts through the various activities it organizes. The association, in recognizing Puello's outstanding contribution to the arts, is celebrating her by awarding her its Grand Medal of Honor as well as the prestigious title of Honorary Member, which were bestowed by the Association's President Mr. Edilson E. Barbosa. He stated that the award was to recognize Puello "for her relevant contribution to fine arts and culture" through her work with ArtTour International Magazine, ATIM Web TV and the Vivid Arts Network. There can be no doubt that this award was well earned by Puello, when one considers just how passionate her contributions to fine arts and culture have been, not to mention her energetic drive to do even more in the present and future. The positive impact achieved by Viviana Puello in this field has mainly been through her multifaceted role as founder, director, artist and activist for the arts. She has founded ArtTour International magazine, ATIM Web TV as well as the Vivid Arts Network, demonstrating her serious commitment to the arts, which she strives to express in as many ways as possible. www.arttourinternational.com

While celebrating Puello's individual achievement is more than due, ArtTour International Magazine is very proud to have played a significant role in aiding Puello's promotion of the arts throughout the world. One of the many virtues of the magazine is that it provides an excellent platform for individual artists to express themselves and further their contributions to the arts by reaching out to other art enthusiasts across the globe. With over two million readers and an ever-growing presence on the international market, ArtTour International Magazine is appreciated by critics, collectors and art lovers alike. It is immensely satisfying when hard work and effort pay off, making one strive to work even harder in the interests of art and culture. Quite apart from the award deservedly bestowed upon her, there is no doubt that Puello's qualities make her an excellent example for other art enthusiasts who wish to contribute in their own way to this industry. Awards given by respected bodies such as the NAFA are a very welcome and laudable incentive, which further encourage art enthusiasts to participate actively in this field, so one hopes that other organizations will also act in a similar way. Having one's efforts recognized is always a highly rewarding experience. Once again, on behalf of everyone at ArtTour International Magazine: Congratulations, Viviana! October 2014

ARTTOUR INTERNATIONAL OCTOBER 2014

A message from our Editor in Chief Daer ATIM readers, The summer of 2014 truly was a defining moment for ATIM, experiencing the arts to its fullest, we celebrated our first ATIM MASTERS AWARDS ceremony; we met personally a slew of talented master artists, and had a wonderful time just enjoying a few days with fellow artists whose main goals are to create and inspire. It brings a tear to my eye, remembering the wonder that those few days provided me with – not to mention the sense of fulfillment. For our events coverage we visited Beirut and Byblos in Lebanon, Taza and Fes in Morocco, Toronto, Canada and Miami. What an amazing summer for ATIM! We had a great time covering international events and exhibitions. Log on to www.atimtv.com and enjoy our video presentations of all events. Our next stop? Miami! We're proud to announce our ArtTour International Art Festival, a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural event and creative project. A showcase of contemporary art and design where visual, performing artists, and the public create together new meanings and scenarios for the future. Organized by ArtTour International Magazine in collaboration with, the Koubek Center – Miami Dade College, the Miami Dance Company, ATIM TV and Vivid Arts Network. The exhibition, showcasing contemporary visual and performing art in Miami and introducing international artists during the Art Basel week, will run from December 3rd to the 7th. We’re very excited about this adventure and the opportunity of meeting our Florida readers and supporters. If you're in Miami December 3rd to the 7th, please stop by the Koubek Center – Miami Dade College and visit us! This issue of ATIM is full of articles that focus on artists who bring us their art and their stories of success, featuring exclusive content, including “Art 2 Heart” interviews, event video presentations and much more. My special treat for you is our very exclusive article, SAHARA – Dancing to the Beat of the Berber Heart. This article was born from the great inspiration and admiration for what I consider the culture that wins in kindness and hospitality. I have traveled many countries, but the special welcoming love and energy I felt with the Berber people in the dessert surpasses anything else. I invite you to a journey through beautiful images of the Sahara Desert to learn more about this amazing culture of “free people”. As the magazine nears the entrance into its fourth year, I am both awed at how far it has come, and curious to see how much farther it will continue to go. We are at 2.1 million+ readers online alone, and the numbers only continue to grow! It is an incredible feeling, to be at the forefront of such an amazing journey, surrounded by talented individuals who care for the realm of art as deeply as I do. I am so honored to be a part of this, and I count it as a blessing on a daily basis. Readers, please support our artists and help contemporary art flourish. At Arttour International Magazine, we want to create the magazine you want to read, so please, send us your feedback, story ideas, etc. If you are interested in becoming a contributing writer send us an email to vp@arttourinternational.com We look forward to continue with this multicultural celebration of art for many years to come!

REMEMBERING THE MASTERS EXPLORING THE LIFE AND TIMES OF

BRUNO FILISBERTI O N E O F T H E G R E AT E S T B R A Z I L I A N M A S T E R PA I N T E R S O F T H E 2 0 T H C E N T U RY

Considered one of the great artists in the cultural history of Pocos de Caldas, Bruno Filisberti was born in S達o Paulo state in 1912. The son of Italian immigrants, Filisberti was very young when he showed a deep interest in painting. He attended the prestigious School of Fine Arts in S達o Paulo from 1936 to 1939, receiving lessons from masters such as Paulo Lopes Vergueiro and Amedeo Scavoni. These teachers of academic drawing and painting would have a great influence on the artist until the end of his artistic career. He moved to the south of the state of Minas Gerais in 1939 where he taught drawing, living there until the end of his life in 1979. He produced many works, several of which were awarded with gold and silver medals, in competitions both in Brazil and abroad, confirming his ability as a professional painter. He won the gold medal of the Bienal de S達o Paulo. Once, asked why he only painted scenes of poverty, he answered that Rembrandt, when inspired by the picturesque beauty of the Jewish quarter in Amsterdam, didn't regret that it was a poor area. Now, nationally known, he is frequently the subject of research. A tireless promoter of the beauties of Pocos de Caldas, his work has been internationally acknowledged. His paintings can be enjoyed in galleries and famous collections in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and the UK, immortalizing Pocos de Caldas through his magic brush. After his death in 1979, the immense power of his active personality is missed. However, the immeasurable dimension of his art is undoubtedly a legacy of immortality that will always be present. This great master, immortalized with his genius in admirable canvases, the natural beauties of stay: his favorite theme.

“The Colors of the Mediterranean Italian designer, Giusi Indelicato, has managed to combine craftsmanship and tradition with progress and modernity in all her designs. With her very unique style, Indelicato takes part in all facets of the process from the creation to the finished garment. Giusi Indelicato projects her great energy and character on each of her creations, offering unique and totally original pieces that have lead to her becoming a highly recognised designer in her area. She describes it as the projection of her mood on each garment, her being somehow reflected in each of her creations. Thus, each Indelicato design is something unique and genuine. Giusi designs clothes to dress the modern woman, the woman of today, so that she feels comfortable without sacrificing elegance or female essence. A key personality of the designs is the selection of fabrics. Indelicato pays particular attention to fabrics and textiles, seeking air, volatility, flexibility and nice textures, always avoiding stiffness. She likes to experiment with fabrics, playing with malleable textures. Certainly, the mix of fabrics and the role they play in her designs are key features of the Indelicato brand. Another very important feature is the colour that is brought to her www.arttourinternational.com

collections. Indelicato stands out for her lively and intense colours. She explains that the explosion of colour is inspired in part by the influence of the environment of her native Sicily – featuring the colours of nature, architecture and the famous ceramics of the area. Among the characters that have inspired this Sicilian are Coco Chanel, who she admires for her revolutionary use of materials discredited at the time – jersey fabric and elastic. Another of her

references is painter Giovanni Boldini whose female figures are a g reat inspiration. She also confesses finding inspiration and creative impetus in music and her own feelings and emotions. In her various collections you can see these influences, as well as the enthusiasm and finesse behind each creation. Her clothes have featured in events and parades and have drawn much attention. Her unique style has helped Indelicato count on a loyal customer base that continues to

grow, as her proposition is as innovative as it is authentic and traditional. With a professional career stretching over 15 years, Giusi Indelicato continues to move forward, always trying to bring something new and fresh to her designs without losing their identity. Her most striking garments are undoubtedly her dresses, both short and long, for everyday wear or special occasions, always with a seductive touch and a disturbing mix of glamour and Mediterranean folklore. Also noteworthy is the

creation of original designs of accessories, such as handbags or purses, practical, comfortable and full of character. Indelicato Giusi designs are sold in her boutiqueatelier located in the centre of Ferrara (Corso Concordia, 1) in Italy. Opened in 1998, the Giusi boutique – like her creations – is full of life and colour and is where the designer unleashes her imagination and where women who purchase her designs enjoy a unique experience. Moreover, in her atelier Indelicato makes her creativity and experience available to women, and offers the opportunity of making unique and exclusive garments.

Indelicato certainly loves her land and her work and feels comfortable in her boutique at the foot of the castle of Ferrara. However, do not rule out in the future her opening the doors and jumping out to expand and boost her international career. Meanwhile, she continues to enjoy her passion in her Italian homeland, but has a window to the

“Blue People”, a nickname earned from using indigo stones to color the fabric they use for their garments. Through a process of pounding the indigo stones into powder and the powder into the fabric. The bluer and shinier the resulting fabric, the more beautiful the item of clothing and the higher the status of the wearer is considered. In the course of wearing fabric so treated, over time some of the blue powder gets on the skin of the wearer. In a desert, one can’t take daily showers, so the wearer’s skin actually takes on a bluish tinge, therefore the popular nickname. The name Berber comes from the name given to this people by the Romans, which is a variation of the Latin original word Barbarian. They refer to themselves by the term Amazigh, or ‘free people.’ The history of the Berber people in northern Africa is both extensive and diverse. Their oldest ancestors settled in the East of Egypt. They fought against the Romans, Arab, and French invaders. They have managed to preserve their own language and culture passed seamlessly from generation to generation. The culturally distinct Berber communities of today survive in the mountains and in the Sahara desert, scattered over a large area from the Siwa Oasis in Egypt to the Atlantic and from the Niger river and the Sahel in the south to the Mediterranean. The Berber population of Morocco represents around 40 percent of the nation’s www.arttourinternational.com

32 million people, though almost 80 percent of the country claims at least some Berber heritage. Smaller Berber populations can also be found in Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Mali. Most historians believe Berbers first arrived in Morocco in the second or third millennium BC. As the original inhabitants of Morocco, they are rightly proud of the contributions they’ve made in shaping the country. Most of today’s rural Berber communities, identified as the Amazigh, live in the mountains of Morocco and it is very common these days to see Berbers running, owning and operating small shops and other commercial endeavors. With a unique language and culture, the Berbers stand out for preserving their traditions in an ever-modernizing October 2014

world. While Berbers in Morocco have a common identity, they can be roughly separated into three distinct tribes. In fact, while nearly all Berbers refer to their language as Tamazight, it’s far from homogeneous. One Berber might not understand a compatriot just a few hours down the road, and dialects from across the country are nearly indecipherable. In the north, the Riffian Berbers speak a dialect called Tarafit. This is the smallest Berber population in the country, and this group stays within the bounds of the Rif Mountains. In the Middle Atlas are the Zayanes, who spread from Fes in the north to Marrakesh in the south. Their dialect, Tamazight, varies wildly from region to region but is usually intelligible by native speakers. Some Zayanes, particularly those near Ouarzazate in the south, are still nomads, traveling with their livestock as the seasons change. The southern Atlas and Anti Atlas Mountains are home to the Shilhah. The Shilhah is the largest Berber tribe in the country and often viewed as having the most ‘pure’ Berber language, Tashlheit. Berber Arts and Culture

Culture and traditions within each Berber community is very tribal and will differ from region to region. Day to day life is nomadic with men taking care of the livestock and women taking care of the family and handicrafts. The community will move to ensure that the livestock has ample grazing, water and shelter. This allows the women to continually collect different plants that they will use to dye wool and cotton. Their livestock provide them with wool which they use to weave kilims, a tapestry like woven carpet. These are sometimes made for personal use but are

www.arttourinternational.com

also often sold at local souks (markets). The patterns woven into the kilims are distinctive and characteristic of the tribe and region. The Moroccan Berber women like to embellish their kilims with fringes and sequins whereas other Berber weavers from different regions will simply use geometric designs such as diamonds and triangles. Berber women weave brightly colored carpets, embroider indigo head coverings, paint their faces with saffron, and wear ornate jewelry. Their extraordinarily detailed arts are rich in cultural symbolism; they are always breathtakingly beautiful— and they are typically made by women. Like other Amazigh (Berber) groups they have entrusted their artistic responsibilities to women. One of the reasons Amazigh women are artists is that the arts are expressions of ethnic identity, and it follows that the guardians of Amazigh identity ought to be those who literally ensure its continuation from generation to generation, the Amazigh women. Not surprisingly, the arts are visual expressions of womanhood, and fertility symbols are prevalent. Controlling the visual symbols of Amazigh identity has given these women power and prestige. Their clothing, tattoos, and jewelry are public identity statements. Cont. page 42

Handmade and usually homemade Berber carpets are still an active diligence in many rural areas of Berber countries. Many Berber families gain their daily bread from building-up carpets manually and selling them in local markets or even to art merchants and tourists. Traditional Berber carpet is very different from the modern mass-produced Berber carpets usually known in the West. They are much more beautiful, cultured and are made of natural materials. The Djellaba is a Berber traditional long, loose-fitting unisex outer robe with full sleeves. The women also wear or Kaftan which is without a hood unlike the djellaba. This dress is particularly decorated with the typical woman embroidery upon the dress openings and arms. Kaftan is usually worn on the festive occasions and wedding ceremonies by the Berber women. Bright colored silks and other dainty fabrics are favorites. The craftsmen and tailors apply their special skills to make the women dresses attractive and graceful. The women of high class also use a traditional belt which has golden embroidery and exquisite decorations along the edges. Set on the side of a hill 6KM northwest of Sefrou, the village of Bhalil is notable for its unique cave houses located in the old part of the village, and for its eclectically colored homes, linked together by a network of bridges. The cave houses in Bhalil stand next to ordinary "over-ground" houses, and there is no other difference between them than practical ones. Digging into the cave allows good conditions for keeping a home cool in summer and keeping the worst cold out in winter. The facades of the cave houses can therefore be easy to pass by, they do about the same decor work and put up the same walls in front as for the "over-ground" houses. Berber Architecture & the Homes Berber architecture is as varied as the countries they live in. Berber constructions in the hills of Jebel Nebusa are among the most remarkable. They are underground houses carved vertically or horizontally in limestone. Some of them look like ordinary caves on the slopes of hills. Others have been deeply dug on the ground and they have a complex net of rooms around a central hole which is used as a fountain.

four towers projecting from the angle of the enclosure-walls from a fair height; these are true fortresses making use of variations of terrain and decorated in their upper sections with either painted ornamentation or geometrical reliefs so aptly arranged that they confer a quite specific character on these buildings (the ighrem, the tighremt) as well as on the ksar in which they are grouped. The most finished specimens of this particular architecture are to be found in the valleys of the Middle Dra, the Dades and the Todgha. Cont. page 46

Top: “Mamma Aysha”, a 93 year old Berber woman who lives in a cave owned by her husband’s family for over 300 years. As we arrived to Bhalil, she invited us in, served mint tea, and shared her family story. Mamma Aysha gets her water from the river down the mountain each day by carrying buckets of water on her head and hands. Although the government has offered her the opportunity to move to a regular house, she prefers a lifestyle that makes her feel completely happy and free, and she would never move from her cave. Proud of her family traditions, mamma Aysha, like many other Berber people who live in caves, are pillars of a culture that has learned to preserve their customs and inheritance. Berber Music in Morocco Berber music is inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the countryside of Morocco and the resonance bendir, which governs the rhythm of songs, chants and dances. Berbers are a fascinating spectacle, music is performed using flutes and drums; the rhythmic beat is often accompanied by groups of dancers. The rhythm is the foundation of this music. The dances are held during the festivities in the evening around a

bonfire of wood. Men and women members of bands are always dressed in traditional clothes. The expression of the Berber soul is definitely reflected by the songs and music that are passed on from generation to generation. Dance is an integral and constant affirmation of who and what they are: a form of self and group expression and pleasure. It is their pride, a statement of their specific ethnicity. Some tribes pray and send blessings by dance; others celebrate plantings, harvests, holidays, seasonal

changes and births with dance; so many meet and court during dance; challenge one another, show off and communicate in dance; several seal marriages with a dance; most city and many country women get their sex education via dance; most tribes have their macho, warrior dances for the men. The songs of the Middle Atlas are accompanied by a unique collective dance called the ahidous. The dancers (men and women) stand around the person leading the music in a circle and sway from the waist while singing rhythmic poems to the beat of tambourines. In the High Atlas and the Sous , the Berbers perform an ahouach. This can be danced by men, by women or by a mixed group, but all the musicians are male. The women, dressed in long silk robes, form a circle around the musicians, sitting close to the fire which they have used to warm up their tambourines beforehand. As a general rule, the song has four parts. In the first part, a soloist performs, and the initial refrain is taken up by the chorus of dancers and the tambourine. After this, male and female voices alternate, growing gradually stronger. All the dancers begin to move in time to the melody and the steps, and the music and singing become faster and faster. The best-known Rif songs are those of the Beni Arous , natives of the Beni Ourighel region. They can be individual or collective. The most famous troupes, the Imdyazens and Izfourn, perform with a tambourine and a long flute: the Ishrrafn owe their reputation to a form of poetry in which romanticism and spirituality mingle.

www.arttourinternational.com

Berber ritual music often features drums and rhythmic hand clapping. It is used in the rites of the agricultural calendar - such as moussems - as well as on occasions such as marriage. Ritual music is also performed to help deal with evil spirits. In the Atlas Mountains troupes of musicians, called imdyazn, travel during summer and perform in village squares and at weekly souks. A leader improvises poems telling of current affairs. Drum, rabab and clarinet accompany the singer. The clarinetist also acts as the ensembles' clown. A Self-taught artist, I was born in San Carlos, a north zone in Costa Rica. The first artistic steps began from observing and sketching small works of the great masters of history. I was always inclined to realistic art, but it was until 2011 that my vision change with the loss of my husband, my teacher and mentor (artist Don Black) and I began to explore abstract symbolism in the game of an imaginative universe where I combine geometric elements, abstract shapes and symbols. My art is like a puzzle game, where I intend for the figures to flow and live together in perfect harmony, I try to evoke a vision of the world, some issues to alert awareness of the reality in which we live and on the other hand parts of my daily life .

ARTTOUR INTERNATIONAL OCTOBER 2014

TAZA BIENNIAL ATIM was happy to travel to Morocco to cover the first edition of the Taza Biennial. Our ATIMTV.COM team was present, and we had the opportunity to chat with the artists and produce a wonderful video for the event to share with our readers. The biennial was a success, according to the testimony of the artists and the media. We heartily congratulate all the artists! The event is founded and chaired by the international artist painter and curator Elmadani Belmadani and it is run in partnership with the Cultural Direction in Taza and organized in partnership with the management culture, the province of Taza, Taza municipal city and the Friends of Taza Association. The aim of the project is to create events of artistic self-renewal while also building a stable, long-term project, bonding with its host, Morocco. For each edition, the artistic director will build the event’s identity by providing opportunities to explore a specific theme such as history, globalization or temporality. The Taza Biennial presented new and exciting works by over 50 international contemporary artists, promoting them across the country and bringing national attention to Taza’s art scene. Short Description of Taza Taza is a city in Morocco, divided into three districts. The old city lies on a mountaintop, overlooking the two other districts down in the valley. The city gave its name to the Taza Gap, a valley between the Rif mountains and the Atlas mountains, which has been suggested is the true geological division between Africa and Europe. It has many historic sites: the Kasbah of Bastion, castles, waterfalls and a museum.

ARTTOUR INTERNATIONAL OCTOBER 2014

Falling for Guanjuato Written by Dave Hamra

Queretaro, Guanajuato. Emperor Maximilian. Rolling imperial heads, medieval Spanish villages and dried corpses. Here Diego was resurrected, redeemed and now revered, long after his death and the demise of the extremist right-wing Church. In this part of central Mexico, it felt as though I were reunited with kindred spirits, where organic colors blend into the earthly schema, painted with the blood of Frieda and flesh of Tamayo. Squeezing onto the bus out of Queretaro, I was the last passenger in, standing room only. It was growing dark on the road and I was anxious to get on it, even if it meant squeezing onto that little step next just inches from the moving asphalt. My bags pushed against the flimsy folding doors as the bus began to pull away, picking up speed. And so the bus was bulging as we began to move. The crowded aisle and seats tightly embraced humanity. Fate radiating out chocolate eyes and weary faces that looked out the windows or down at the floor, uncomfortable with the forced intimacy. Alone and self-conscious, I tried to look nonchalant. Then suddenly, the mass of poker faces was transformed by the scene unfolding. Like a pregnant belching beast, the bus had erupted and my bags burst out of the flimsy door flaps, tumbling onto the road. The rolling vessel was suddenly filled by an explosion of laughter; I watched, horrified, as my bags hit the dirt road and disappeared, tumbling. I was red with embarrassment and panicking,"para, para!" Failing miserably to be inconspicuous, and more like being on a stage in a comedy, I felt the whole bus load of beautiful laughing brown eyes on me as stumbled off and tried to collect my bags. I couldn't appreciate the comic relief they were enjoying in their laughter. Finally, I made it to tiny colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. The changing fortune of San Miguel started with arrival of wealthy gringos building villas on the surrounding hills, while the poorest residents fatefully watched their homes bought, sold and made into small tourist shops and boutiques, and rent become unaffordable. Fourteen tiny cathedrals were crowded into the small colonial town and rose like a small mass of sculpted crystal, dusted with centuries of human residue and carved by beauty and suffering. It made me wonder about the sins and devotion of the past inhabitants that inspired such craft and "holiness" and how the spanish brought such misery and magnificence. I also saw how Truth and History were drawn

and quartered, split by the perversion of one idea, Fate or Faith. One night, as I was walking around in this small town, I locked in on a small church around dusk and walked around it a few times until I saw a young boy trotting up to and opening the creaky old back door to the church. "Puedo mira la campanario aribe?" He looked at me like I was insane. "Pasa por aqui." Dusk was approaching and I tried to keep up with the young man as he scrambled skillfully and effortlessly up the dilapidated ladders and broken steps in the darkening bell tower. When I finally reached the top and stood, I bumped into a massive iron bell, bigger than either of us, hanging precariously from shredded rope and a rotting beam.

Tunnels of Guanajuato

Looking out above the little town, in the midst of haze and flocks of pigeons, I could make out several companarios, The New World's first network. The aged patinated spires of caramel and silt still desperately reaching, pointing straight up, out of the chaos, as to say, "this was His idea."

Parroquia de Belen

My young friend, the custodian of the campanile, climbed up and stood in the middle of the arched opening of the tower and leaned out, hanging from the edge. He yelled something out into the approaching night, across rooftops and smoking taco vendors. He waved to his young counterpart who was standing on the belfry of another distant church bell tower. His friend yelled and waved back. It was 6 pm. The impact and blasting of the resonating clang of the bell slammed me backwards as I grasped the sides of my head and staggered toward the square hole and broken stairs behind me. Following the boy, I started to scramble back to the ground, down the tower steps. Descending into the now dark tunnel, seventy-five feet up. I floundered around carefully looking and feeling for each cracked wooden step and broken, but, still tenaciously, attached pieces of railing. Each reluctant step and second thought took long minutes, and several attempts, but saved me from stepping out and onto a non-existing, missing plank, into the abyss, tumbling, like rejected luggage on a dusty road to eternity and Frieda, joining the clashing spirits of the indigenous and their cruel conquerers.
