The Eyes Have It: Adamo Macri’s Sunglasses (by Kenneth Radu, 2020) Sometimes focusing on a specific detail in a work of art leads me more deeply into the artist’s vision. In the essay Hirsute Pleasures, for example, I wrote about the appearance and effect of hair in Adamo Macri’s many portraits. The other day, unable to make up my mind, I spent an hour trying on new frames for much-needed new lenses at my optometrist. At the same time I recalled the presence of sunglasses and other eye coverings in the self-portraits of an artist in whose work I see so many layers of meaning and interest that I never tire of, well, viewing the images. A recent portrait 19.04.20 depicts Macri wearing a dark robe covered with white geometric designs with a hood, sporting an elegant and subtle pair of sunglasses in which reflections and eyes are visible. Once again I am smitten. I stood in a boutique of mirrors and reflections. Staring at my own image in a mirror to see how I’d look with costly, designer frames,
