Kate Rintoul and Robyn Minogue with the SU. It provides students with a platform to showcase their creativity, continuing to thrive under the SU’s commitment to provide students with professional development opportunities.
The SU publishes research into international student scholarships and UAL commits to providing ten £25k scholarships for international students from lower income countries. And following SU initiatives like Trans Awareness Week to support trans students, UAL agrees to implement gender neutral toilets on all university sites.
UAL implements online unconscious bias training for all staff after continuous pressure from the SU to eliminate hidden bias and discrimination.

2017 Following the SU’s 2016 publication of a Cost of Study Report, the university agrees to a number of demands made as part of the SU’s Cut the Cost of Study campaign, allocating £250k a year for a materials grant and hardship funds.

2020

In response to COVID-19, the Advice team launched Buddy Up, and Sabbatical Officers worked closely with senior UAL staff to ensure decisions made during the pandemic did not unfairly impact students.

2022
Following consultation with our members, we successfully implemented a new Sabbatical Officer and representation structure, introducing new roles that represent our students accurately

Hi, I’m Lexa!
I moved to London 3 years ago from Bucharest, Romania in order to study Theatre Design at UAL. I fell in love with London’s diversity, history, and lifestyle, and I’m excited to make my first steps here as a working professional!
Working with the Students Union since my first year, showed me the importance of the student voice, and the struggles and rewards of actively implementing feedback into UAL structures.
London College of Fashion Officer
LCFOfficer@su.arts.ac.uk @lcfofficer.artssu
Hello!
I am a Fashion Photography student from School of Media and Communication at London College of Fashion.
I stood up for the role becuase I want to improve student community as LCF moves to Stratford, supporting students through the cost of living crisis and reducing the Black Home Student attainment gap.

Hello! I’m Sof!
I came to UAL as I was working with Team England Cheerleading as their photographer. However, when I was studying for my Masters, I found the student experience was really lacking for me, especially compared to the two art schools/universities that I had studied at previously. So, I campaigned to become an Officer to advocate for the UAL student body, and push UAL to improve as an institution for the sake of the students.

CAMPAIGN: arts-su.com/voice/officers/
CSM Fine Art graduate and I’m looking forward to completing a second year in office as your CSM Officer. This past year I’ve worked closely on campaigns tackling the cost of living and cost of study crisis which I will be focusing on again this academic year. I also believe in championing student communities and collaborations at UAL and creating safer and more inclusive learning environments for all. Don’t hesitate to reach out via email!

@community.artssu
Unionaffairs@su.arts.ac.uk @unionaffairs_artssu
I recently graduated from Performance: Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins and now work at Arts SU.

Alongside my studies, I was the President of the African Caribbean Society for 3 years, where I produced many events, campaigns and exhibitions. During my term I plan to continue upholding UAL to their pledges of decolonisation and antiracism. In addition, to continuing to produce community centred events, with a focus on making them even bigger and better!

During my time at University, I studied Fine Art! I decided to stand for this position because I am passionate about addressing the cost of living crisis and its impact on the student experience. I witnessed firsthand the financial struggles many of us face, which often hinder our ability to fully engage in our studies and enjoy our time at university.
By raising our concerns, we can bring about the necessary reforms and initiatives that will alleviate the burden and ensure that you have the freedom to focus on what truly matters— your education, your experience, your passions and personal growth.
Every member of the Students’ Union (all UAL students – you are automatically a member when you join UAL) can influence the decisions the organisation and your representatives make on your behalf. You can do this through deciding what campaigns we are running to create positive change, what priorities the organisation lobbies UAL on or pushing for changes specific to your course, school or college.
Why not get involved by:
1 Contacting your representative

Email us so we can put you directly in touch with your course rep, school rep, a Full-Time Officer or support staff to help you.
2 Submit an idea
Head to our website to submit an idea, which if your fellow peers support, can be made into reality.
3
Attend a SU Student Forum
Every term we hold a forum with students where they meet with representatives to determine key actions the SU should take on issues affecting UAL students.
4 Voting in our Elections & Referendums
Elections take place in Autumn and Spring where you elect who represents you. You could even stand for a role yourself if you like speaking up on behalf of students. Outside of these election cycles we may hold referendums for specific issues.

5 Annual Members Meeting (AMM)
We hold an AMM which is an open meeting accessible to all our members to review our finances, update on key developments and make decisions on the priorities of the SU.

You could stand to be a course representative and join a community of over 1200 student volunteers across UAL. You would gain access to a range of exclusive benefits such as free social events, personal skills development, tailored training and opportunities to shape the student experience on your course. If you’re interested in becoming a course rep, you should tell us, and your course leader in the first 3 weeks of term.

Arts Awards
The Arts’ Awards gives you the opportunity every year to recognise the UAL staff and students who have made all the difference to your experience at UAL. This is your chance to thank your tutors, lecturers, technical staff, support staff and reps for all their hard work and support. This usually takes place in third term.

Student Interns

Each year we recruit several student interns to research into the experiences of underrepresented groups at UAL. This could include aspects affecting their academic experience, but also their wider student experience including housing, community, financial, or anything else. The research topics are set by the interns themselves.
