1997

Xhibit is founded by thenstudents of the London Institute, Kit Hammonds and Angela Robinson. The programme showcases work of students from across UAL; the programme celebrated its 26th anniversary this year.

2014

Made in Arts London is founded by then-students Kate Rintoul and Robyn Minogue with the SU. It provided students a platform to showcase their work and make an income through their creative practice. Although now under new branding, selling opportunities are still continuing to thrive under the SU’s commitment to provide students with professional development opportunities.

2015

The SU publishes research into international student scholarships and UAL commits to providing ten £25k scholarships for international students from lower income countries. And following SU initiatives like Trans Awareness Week to support trans students, UAL agrees to implement gender neutral toilets on all university sites.

2016

UAL implements unconscious for all staff after pressure from eliminate hidden discrimination.

ARTS SU KEY EVENTS:

2017

Following the SU’s 2016 publication of a Cost of Study Report, the university agrees to a number of demands made as part of the SU’s Cut the Cost of Study campaign, allocating £250k a year for a materials grant and hardship funds.

2020

In response to COVID-19, the Advice team launched the Companion Scheme, and Sabbatical Officers worked closely with senior UAL staff to ensure decisions made during the pandemic did not unfairly impact students.

2022

Following consultation with our members, we successfully implemented a new Sabbatical Officer and representation structure, introducing new roles that represent our students accurately.

Every member of the Students’ Union can influence the decisions the organisation and your representatives make on your behalf.

You can do this through deciding what campaigns we run to create positive change, what priorities the organisation lobbies UAL on or pushing for changes specific to your course, school or college.

ATTEND AN SU STUDENT FORUM

Every term we hold a forum with students where they meet with representatives to determine key actions the SU should take on issues affecting UAL students.

ANNUAL MEMBERS MEETING (AMM)

Once a year we hold an AMM, open to all of our members, to review our finances, update on key developments, and decide the SU’s priorities for the year ahead.

VOTE IN OUR ELECTIONS & REFERENDUMS

Elections take place in Autumn and Spring where you elect who represents you. You can stand for a variety of roles, giving you the power to speak up on behalf of students.

CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE

Speak to your course rep or school rep either via email or when they reach out for student feedback. You can also directly contact the Education Quality team at Arts SU with any concerns, queries, or feedback about your academic experience. As a team, we will support you with the help of your student reps, a Full-Time Officer or support staff.

COURSE REP COMMUNITY

You can run in the Autumn elections to become a School Representative. Our School Representatives are a small community of 24 students across UAL, working alongside Deans and course reps to bring about change at a school level.

You will gain access to a range of opportunities to make positive impacts at UAL, access tailored training and develop personal skills.

SCHOOL REP COMMUNITY ARTS’ AWARDS

The Arts’ Awards give you the opportunity every year to recognise the UAL staff and students who have made all the difference to your experience at UAL

This is your chance to thank your tutors, lecturers, technical staff, support staff and peers for all their hard work and support. This usually takes place in the third term.

You could stand to be a course representative and join a community of over 1200 student volunteers across UAL.

You will gain access to a range of exclusive benefits like free social events, personal skills development, tailored training and opportunities to shape the student experience on your course.

If you’re interested in becoming a course rep, you should tell your course leader and us (coursereps@su.arts.ac.uk first 3 weeks of term.

We host a professional development programme over the year based on themes such as creative wellbeing, financial literacy, crits and inclusive learning, arts and technology, exhibition making, and arts and community, to name a few. Our development programme is continually changing based on the wants and needs of the current student body at UAL.

We understand that for many students, starting university can be a huge transition with new surroundings and people, and it can be challenging to make friends and meet likeminded students.

That’s why we created “Buddy Up“ to help! By joining Buddy Up, we can pair you up with another student based on a few of your preferences and introduce you to a potential friend for life! Or, if you are looking to connect with other UAL students who self-identify as belonging to the same community as you, you could join Buddy Channels. Buddy Channels are networks on Microsoft Teams for UAL students. We have lots of online resources on a range of topics you might need help with, such as a LGBTQ+ channel, mature students’ channel, international students channel and many more. All you need to do is complete our sign-up form on our website and let us do the rest.
