Political History In The Making In

The Show Me State of Missouri For the first time in the history of Missouri and the United States, Black People, in particular and the general population as a whole have an opportunity starting with the Presidential Primary on Tuesday, March 15th, 2016 to vote for a person of color to be elected to the most powerful Political positions in this country and state.

This has been made possible because Dr.Willie Wilson,a self made millionaire from Chicago will be on the Missouri Democratic ballot as a Presidential candidate this Tuesday, March 15th, 2016.

Although his campaign is not well known due to the white out by the major media outlets, he is on a number of state ballots for President throughout the country.

Also, there are three other Blacks vying for the powerful positions of United States Senator, Governor and Lt. Governor here in the state of Missouri and their names will be on the Democratic Primary ballot on Tuesday, August 8, 2016.

These candidates include Pastor Cori Bush, who is seeking the office of United States Senator in Missouri; Bishop Eric Morrison who resides in Kansas City and is a candidate for Governor of Missouri and State Representative, Rev. Tommie Pearson who is a candidate for Lt. Governor here in Missouri.

These candidates are truly Political Trail Blazers and as residents of the Show Me State of Missouri setting an example for Black people throughout the United States to challenge for powerful political positions. Also, outside of Missouri a courageous sister, Monique Singh Bey has stepped up to the plate as a candidate for US Senator in the state of Kansas.

Finally, the Universal African Peoples Organization (UAPO) will be hosting a series of fundraising events for these outstanding candidates. Our first was held on January 31, whereby we generated $1760.00 to place Ms Bey on the ballot in Kansas and $200.00 to place Ms Bush on the Missouri ballot (each state have different filing fees), with an additional $250.00 given to Rev Pierson campaign. Continuing our efforts, we are hosting a fundraising event for Cori Bush, this Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 6:00pm. This event will be held at Legacy Bookstore, 5249 Delmar. Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves Returns to St. Louis for Opera Theatre’s Monsanto Artists-in-Training Annual Spring Recital on April 10 Special concert marks 26 years for Monsanto Artists-in-Training, $12,000 in scholarships to be awarded to students across the St. Louis region St. Louis, MO, March 29, 2016 — Opera Theatre of Saint Louis presents the Annual Spring Recital for its Monsanto Artists-in-Training vocal program on Sunday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall at 3648 Washington Boulevard in Grand Center. The event, followed by a complimentary reception, is free and open to the public.

The showcase recital is the culmination of Opera Theatre’s Monsanto Artists-in-Training year-long program, where outstanding young singers from area high schools come together to compete for $12,000 in scholarships. The singers will be awarded the scholarships based on their performances at the recital.

Deborah Patterson, immediate past president of Monsanto Fund, will serve as emcee of this year’s concert. The concert will also honor Ms. Patterson for the years of commitment to the AIT program that the Monsanto Fund has provided under her leadership. Monsanto Artists-in-Training is supported by Monsanto Fund. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $438,000 in scholarship money to deserving high school students in the St. Louis region.

This year, the competition will be adjudicated by internationally acclaimed American mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, who previously appeared on the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis stage in the 2013 world premiere of Terence Blanchard’s Champion. She has since returned to be part of the #WithNormandy: A Concert for Peace and Unity event Opera Theatre co-hosted at Normandy High School and OTSL’s 2015 Spring Sing!. Market Queen, Annie Malone, in the Shadows of Obscurity The balmy mid-spring air is rife with revelry, excitement and pride.

Each year, thousands of goers, young and old, line the streets anticipating the spirited, high energy and rhythmic procession of The Annie Malone May Day Parade, including shimmering dancers and majorettes, clusters of colorful floats, decorated cars, high school bands and drum and bugle corp -- all definite crowd-pleasers.

For more than a century, this venerable event, a traditional family gathering in the Black community, is one of the oldest parades in the area. Until recently, it kicked off in the predominantly Black historical Ville neighborhood, where the Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center resides. Proceeds from this high profile social and cultural event support the agency. A few years ago, it moved downtown, winding its way through the city’s commercial district, trumpeting the strength and resolve of a proud ethnic group that has endured and survived centuries of oppression.

The parade started in 1910. In 1922, the name Annie Malone was added, recognizing her gift of $10,000 to construct the Children’s Home, then called the St. Louis Colored Orphans Home. It was a “queen’s ransom” then and not too shabby now, yet the memory of this brilliant, audacious and remarkable woman, a mogul by any standard, could well be lost to all the hoopla.

Gwen Moore, urban curator, Missouri History Museum, is seeking to salvage public perception of Black women entrepreneurs, restoring them to history’s rightful place, including Malone. On March 21, the director of SIUE’s (Southern Illinois University’s) Black Studies Program, Prof.

Prince Wells, co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program, invited Ms. Moore to campus to talk about Malone and others. Called: “Market Queens:” Black Women’s Entrepreneurial Tradition, Moore started off explaining to the mostly Black Studies and Women’s Studies students, that her more than hour-long presentation is not exhaustive but an overview of the long tradition of Black women’s commercial activities.

With verve and wit, she clearly stated that Black women in St. Louis played a pivotal role in blazing trails.

Starting in ”Old World Africa to New World Early America” Moore traced African women’s commercialism to the first modern Market Queens, most prominently: Annie Malone and Madame C.J. Walker, both getting their start in the St. Louis area.

In Africa, there were gender divisions of labor (like everywhere else) but unlike most other cultures, African women controlled the agriculture and men were the herders, managing and caring of livestock, considered a more masculine task. “Black women were market authorities, fixing prices, mediating disputes and a number acquired great wealth,” she said. “They were known as Market Queens, so named by the Europeans,” who were stunned by their business savvy. pg. 16

After African women were enslaved and brought to North America, they quickly gained a reputation as expert farmers, contributing to agriculture on a broader scale “which help to make the South prosperous.” They were also artists, artisans, shopkeepers and craftsmen, trading and selling on the open market. Slaves were permitted to engage in these activities as they were often loaned out to work for others and could keep a small portion of their earnings. The lion’s share, of course, went to the slaveholders. Eventually, colony officials were threatened by their strong and competitive drive and imposed strict sexist notions of women as nurturers in the private sphere only and men presiding over the public sphere. Overtime, the idea of Black women as farmers and business competitors was met with stronger and stronger resistance, stereotyping them as “loose, disorderly and idle” and -- for all intents and purposes – relegated to domesticity and ultimately swept into the dustbins of history.

The long list of women Moore presented engaged in various enterprises is staggering. In listening to Moore’s talk, it became obvious that a large swath has been cut out of American history, resulting in these women being sorely unappreciated and under-recognized. Black women entrepreneurs defied gender, class and racial roles, breaking through tremendous barriers, achieving the unimaginable for women of their time, let alone African American women. Moore noted that for “the vast majority, the only employment Black women could hope to obtain was some form of domestic service.” So their accomplishments were even more extraordinary. Frances Harriet Green of Rhode Island who started a soap manufacturing business with her sister, circa mid-1800s.

Mary Ellen “Mammy” Pleasant, considered the richest African American in Reconstruction America. In her 1902book, Memoirs and Autobiography, she chronicled her traveling to San Francisco in 1850, opened a boarding house for wealthy White men and became a prosperous moneylender.

One of the most notable was Maggie Lena Walker, the first woman bank president, executive head of the Independent Order of St. Luke for thirtyfive years, building a membership of 100 thousand in twenty-two states and the District of Columbia. In 1929, it merged with two other Black banks to become the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company, with Walker as chairman of the board, a position held until her death in 1934. The bank continues to operate in Richmond, Virginia.

We are up and doing, working and suffering because our needs and necessities and our ambitions force us to enter the world and contend for a living…I am here today to ask the women…to awake, gird their armor and go to work for race uplift and betterment. – Maggie Lena Walker

In St. Louis, women (free and enslaved) worked as hairdressers, dressmakers, ran boarding houses and engaged in other work such as retail venders and commodity brokers where they soon gained dominance. Even within slavery, a particularly oppressive system, some Black women were able to negotiate a hostile environment and engage in enterprises. Black men also worked as barbers, butlers, waiters and other jobs relegated to their race and gender. Below are Moore’s remarks about one of the early St. Louis women: In St. Louis, the most well known of these women entrepreneurs is Ester “Morgan,” (slaves did not have last names, so she later acquired Morgan) …

additional property in South St. Louis and Illinois. She operated a successful farm and also had a cow pasture. She was the former slave of Jacques, his ‘junior business partner,’ and often was responsible for managing his affairs when he was away from the city.

What baffles many is the lack of attention given to Annie Malone in comparison to Madame C.J. Walker. Prof. Wells asked rather rhetorically during the presentation: “Why is it that Madame C.J. Walker is credited for Annie Malone’s accomplishments? Walker (born Sarah Breedlove in 1867) showed up in Colorado with a formula obtained from Annie Malone.” A friend helped her to modify the formula and the rest is history. Wells later added he had heard of Malone growing up, having been born and raised in Brooklyn, Illinois, the oldest all-Black town started by slaves in 1820, with a large Black population. Brooklyn is right across the Mississippi River from the predominantly White St. Louis (at the time). His grandmother, Beulah Hawkins, witnessed firsthand her incredible business sense. Of course, after Malone moved to St. Louis, she maintained her business interests in the town’s large Black consumer market with sales agents going door-to-door, to churches and community centers.

Moore said she’s uncertain why Walker gets more credit than Malone other than the fact that more research and books have been written about Walker; while, there is little research and no books about Malone.

Walker even has a commemorative U.S. Postage Stamp. Needless to say, this is exactly the reason more should be publicized about Malone who made tremendous strides in her own right and helped Walker get established. “Annie Minerva Pope Turnbo Malone “was the wealthiest pg. 20

and most successful businesswoman of her time, Black or White. She was probably the first self-made woman millionaire,” said Moore. “At the peak of her career in 1920 she was said to be worth $14 million.”

So at the risk of redundancy, it was Annie Malone, not Madame C.J. Walker, who was the first self-made woman millionaire and perhaps even more important, she’s not the first Black woman self-made millionaire, but the first woman self-made millionaire.

Malone was born August 1869 in Metropolis, Illinois, the daughter of escaped slaves, tenth of 11 children. In the 1890s, she started experimenting with chemicals to develop a product to straighten hair without damaging the scalp or hair follicle. Moore showed a PowerPoint slide of Malone’s first business, a building in 1900 in Lovejoy ((also called Brooklyn, Illinois). She moved there with her older sister to launch her business. Plying her craft, she later improved and patented a pressing iron and comb. In anticipation of the 1904 World’s Fair, she moved her business in 1902 from Brooklyn to St. Louis to 2223 Market Street in Mill Creek, west of downtown and east of Grand Ave. In 1900, she married for the first time; soon divorcing asserting her husband tried to interfere in her business.

She was also a philanthropist as evidenced by her generosity to the Children’s Home that still operates in the Ville neighborhood. When Poro College opened in 1918, the Malones had contributed more to charity and Christian associations than any one hundred “colored Americans” in the United States. inviting scores of luminaries and distinguished artists, such as Marian Anderson to perform at Poro. A feminist and a race woman, she sought to advance the status of Blacks in general and women, in particular.

“She envisioned Poro not just as a business but a means of racial uplift, of providing well-paying jobs for remunerative employment to Black women, who at the time were limited primarily to domestic service,” Moore said. Below chronicles her ascent to a worldwide empire, as she parlayed it into a global business, not just limited to St. Louis or to the nation.

In 1906, she copyrighted the trade name “Poro” to safeguard her products and merchandising system from imitators. Poro is a West African word for an organization dedicated to disciplining and enhancing the body physically and spiritually.

Also it is a merger of “Pope and Roberts, name after Mrs. L.L. Roberts, sister and business partner.

1913, she reportedly organized the first convention of professional Black women in the country, gathering her agents from around the country to St. Louis.

In1914, she married Aaron Eugene Malone, a former schoolmate and principal of Lincoln Public School in Quincy, Illinois, making him her business manager.

In1918, her fourth and final headquarters Poro College, 4300 St. Ferdinand and Pendleton in the Ville at a cost of $350,000.

Equipment alone was worth $150,000. At this time Poro had 240 employees and 68,000 agents.

Soon after it was built she added a 20,000 square feet addition at $175,000 with one of the largest mail-order shipping businesses in St. Louis and one of the biggest businesses in the city. The shipping room was a branch of the U.S. Post Office under Government supervision.

Poro was the businesses headquarter, manufacturing plant and a school. It was also a community center, a cultural center and social complex.

The main building and its annex contained classrooms, barbershops, laboratories, an auditorium, a dining room that was open to the public, a cafeteria, an ice cream parlor, a bakery, a theater, a roof-top-garden, two emergency rooms, an apartment for Mr. and Mrs. Malone and a hotel.

In 1922, she introduced a new product line of Black skin care products sold in the Caribbean, South America, Africa and the Philippines. pg. 22

In 1930, she moved her business to Chicago, purchasing an entire city block, opening a new Poro College. Unfortunately, bad situations began to fester. In 1937, the Chicago College went into receivership. She also lost most of her St. Louis property to pay for the settlement of a lawsuit by a former employee. The Poro Building in St. Louis sold to the Mississippi Valley Trust Company for $30 thousand. In 1951, the government took control of Poro for unpaid taxes. Malone died May 10, 1957 and buried in Chicago, receiving a flurry of local and national press. At the time of her death, she was worth approximately $100 thousand, not millions, but in 1957 that made her a wealthy woman. At her death there were Poro schools operating in 32 cities.

Annie Malone mentored Madame C.J. Walker who arrived in the St. Louis area in 1887 right before Malone started her business. She began working as a Poro agent in 1903 and then moved to Denver in 1905 to sell Poro products. There she developed her own business. Walker developed a formula for hair and scalp treatment for Black women that she said came in a dream. Some claimed it came from Malone.

Walker began to rival Malone’s success. In 1910, Walker moved to Indianapolis; by that time she had approximately 500 agents. Her gross monthly sales grew from $400 to $100 thousand. In 1991, the Walker Building, her Indianapolis headquarters, was named a National Historic Landmark. Walker may be better known for building her lavish mansion in 1918 in Irvington, New York, Villa Lewaro, costing $250 thousand.

Her neighbors were John D. Rockefeller of Standard Oil and the railroad magnate Jay Gould, two of the original “robber barons.” She died in 1919 at 51. She had accumulated an estate of $600 thousand, about $6 million in today’s dollars.

It is undeniable that Walker has received many more accolades than Malone. Both were extremely successful with enormous influence and wealth. Yet, history has not been exactly even-handed, not just to Malone but many other remarkable women.

Four decades after their publication, Stephen E. Henderson’s Understanding the New Black Poetry (1973) and Eugene B. Redmond’s Drumvoices: The Mission of Afro-American Poetry: A Critical History (1976) continue to serve as beacons for commentary on poetry. Henderson’s speculations about speech and music as poetic references drew attention to the play of sounds, those of the human voice and those produced by instruments, and we haven’t exhausted what needs to be said about poetry from the angles of sociolinguistics and ethnomusicology. If Henderson’s work was basically synchronic, Redmond’s model for investigation and documentation was overtly diachronic. It provided a foundational model for subsequent literary histories and provoked arguments among poets and critics about the idea of mission. It is difficult to determine which of the two books has had the greater impact on scholarship, pedagogy, and non-academic discussions of how poetry can be said to function. On the other hand, it is easy to notice that no one has tried to account for African American poetry’s evolving from 1976 to the present by using Redmond’s on-the-scene, participant/observer methods.

When Drumvoices appeared in 1976, more people were receptive to the notion that poetry (or literature in general) should be discussed as a tradition, and they were more attuned to thinking that the achievements of individual poets ought to be accounted for in a tradition. At present, many writers appear to have slight interest in a tradition which can’t be easily detached from concepts of obligation, history, and politics; they seem eager to celebrate the association of individual talent with craft, aesthetics, symbolic prizes, and the hype of non-threatening “literary” values upon which reputations depend. The unspecified sense of morality implicit Redmond’s use of the word “mission” seems to be anathema. It would be rash to say the retreat from one form of responsibility is deliberate or consciously “intended,” but rereading Drumvoices alerts us to significant attitudinal differences those of 1976 and the ones which have currency in 2016.

The title Drumvoices itself gives privilege to instrumentality, to the voice as drum, song, and dance (gesture). Thus, the idea of poetry as a tool for creative expression and recalling is prominent in Redmond’s treatment of history. It is a sharp reminder that the origins of African American poetry are located in the oral and in the written, that the two modes are Siamese twins which cannot be separated from one another. Reading this book is to some degree a participation in Redmond’s gestures of recovering how black poetry came to be what it is.

In setting for himself the task of exploring the “complex storehouse of folk materials and themes” and “the chronological development of black poetry --from about 1746 to the present [1976],” (2) Redmond undertook a difficult job. As Darwin T. Turner reminded us in 1971, “although the study of AfroAmerican literature is not as old as the material itself, it is not significantly younger than the formal study of American literature, which has earned academic respectability in this country [the United States] only within the past eighty years. Two years before the end of the Civil War, William Wells Brown, a former slave, described the achievement of early AfroAmerican writers in The Black Man: His Antecedents, His Genius, and His Achievements, and by 1915, the words of black writers were being read, memorized, recited, studied, and revered by black students in the schools into which blacks were segregated…….

“substantive background materials: the deepest philosophical, religious, ethical, artistic, and aesthetic tenets of black life and expression.” Thus, one examines “the scope and range of black poetry via folk origins, methods of delivery, language, phonology, religiosity, racial character, recurring themes, individual and group identity, and poetic devices as they are developed indigenously or borrowed from other traditions” (2) ·

The descriptions of missions are extant in many books and articles, but they are not organized in any single book one might call a continuation of Drumvoices or a supplemental updating.

Malick Sidibé passed away at 80 years old on April 14th in Bamako. Sidibé’s photos, starting in the 1940’s, captured the gradual Westernization of Bamako, Mali. 2016 Mary Meachum Celebration Event

1866 New Beginning of a Brave New World

Buffalo Soldiers, Lincoln Institute and the Rise of Our Cultural Institutions

I

n 1866, the Civil War had just ended and there were new realities facing the government. Slavery was no more and the recalcitrant South was under Union occupation. President Lincoln had signed the Homestead Act in 1862 that opened the West for settlement, which in turn started an unpresented westward expansion. There were westward bound wagon trains that sought to be escorted and protected. The telegraph and the railroad had work crews that needed to be protected as well.

The year before at the end of the war, most white men mustered out of the service as they lives and families to back to, but most of the 250,000 black men that will be part of the USCT had no lives they wanted to back to so they stayed in the military.

Congress recognizing the need for a large peace time military passed “The Act to increase and fix the Military Peace Establishment of the United States.” The law is also known as “The Army Reorganization Act of 1866. Officially it called for the re-organization of the military recognizing that Black men were already a major of the troops, it set the ground work for the expansion of the military with 30 new regiments. It specifically called to the formation of four Black infantry, and two Black cavalry

regiments. Two years later the four infantry will be reduced to two but history will remember them. They were the 24th and the 25th infantry, the 9th and the 10th cavalry; collectively they will be known as “the Buffalo Soldiers.”

In 1866, Black units not on duty in the South, were sent here to Jefferson Barracks. Here they went through what was called “a Camp of Instruction.” Here they were trained in a different type of warfare against a different type of enemy. About half of the Black men that were part of these new Black units had served as part of the USCT (United States Colored Troops) that had been created in 1863 with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Act also stipulated that commissioned officers be white, but there was no color restriction on non-commissioned officers.

However, it did mandate that there was a test for the rank of corporal which handled a lot of the paperwork per unit. The Army had a strong need for Black men who could read and write who could handle the mountain of paperwork that was routine. They had trouble meeting this mandate as up until the year before eight states had a prohibition on the education of people of color.

There was a strong recruitment presence here in St. Louis and other northern cities because of the high level of literacy among the Black population be able to meet this aspect of their quotas. pg. 58

The Act also provided a key provision that there would be a regimental Chaplin in each regiment whose role was education of the men. Going back three years before when Benton Barracks was the Black enlistment center for the USCT, Army officers had recognized the need for Black men to be educated and set aside time during the men’s training hours for education. The military will provide many advantages that free Black men did have on the outside one is which is the $13 a month pay. There is one women who also knew the Army was a haven compared to life in bondage and on the outside. She cuts off her hair and disguises herself as a man – she changes her name from Cathy Williams to William Cathay walks into a downtown recruiting office and joins as a man.

the rise of our colored institutions, our schools and churches. It was the first year of citizenship which had just been given, and with it the promise of freedom and self-determination and all that it meant.

The 14th Annual Mary Meachum Celebration Event will be on Saturday, May 7th and is free to the public. It’s a day of commemoration and celebration with all day music, food and vendors, and children’s activities. Five church choirs will be competing for bragging rights. We are calling all men who want to train as a new recruit for as a Buffalo Soldier, come and join us as we re-create the experience. There will be re-enactors in costume and character and we promise fun to be had by all.

Mary For more information, call 865-0708 or Mary Meachum.org Meachum, the free woman of color, who was the widow of John Berry Meachum, was President of the Colored Women’s Relief Association who spearheaded those efforts. Mary Meachum, whom history has shown to be a courageous women who took a stand against slavery and used her home as a depot of the Underground Railroad. At a time when public transportation was segregated, she negotiated with the city so that only on Saturdays, the colored women could ride to get out Benton Barracks (Fairgrounds Park) to discharge their volunteer duties.

The newly freed understood all too well the importance of education to be able to take full advantage of their new hard won freedom, and the 65th USCT who had been in some of those battles endeavored to make that happen for as many was they could. When they were mustered out the year of the Army the year before, they gave their mustering out pay to their white officer and asked him to help them buy land for a normal school so teachers could be trained make this dream a reality. The fruit of their labor was Lincoln Institute, or known today as Lincoln University. This venerable institution celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

Here in St. Louis and elsewhere, 1866 was the year of new beginnings. It was the first year after the war and it witnessed pg. 60

Why Democrats dese the WHITE O

By Pierre Blaine Yes, there is some merit to the argument that some Democrats have contributed to the angst of economic inequality that we are experiencing now in the early 21st century. However, political maturity in America has always meant the ability to have a healthy skepticism against both political parties – but finally to vote for the lesser of two evils. However, Bill Clinton made the case very aptly that when you examine the evidence, Americans overall have done better when Democrats are in the White House. That is because Democrats for the most part don’t just talk about representing the poor and the middle class, they have delivered on policy that improved the lives of the middle class and we the people hold some responsibility for when that has not occurred by not voting or sitting out in some elections especially state elections.

This coming election for President is shaping up to become one of those elections that if you believe the hype that you have the luxury to sit out because you think your candidate was not nominated, you will be saddened by that outcome. If you can imagine a Republican president, a Republican Congress, and a Republican Supreme Court you may not be able to wake up from that nightmare. What you talking about Willis?

Roe v. Wade will be overturned if that happens and a woman’s right to control her body will be taken away even though the current law has restrictions which protect the rights of the fetus.

Women will be marginalized for equal pay for equal work.

There must be a pathway for citizenship for Immigrants and the continued obstruction of solving that problem is unacceptable.

Any party that deliberately and systematically implements policy and law to disenfranchise you is not worthy of your support.

The Democrats have a real opportunity to nominate the first woman as the nominee of the Democratic Party in the United States of America.

Democrats find a way to govern since that is why they have been elected to office.

The triumph of the Democratic Party was building up the middle-class and creating a safety net for the American people. Democrats support an increase in the minimum wage because it will benefit the people who need a raise and will be spent in the economy.

President Clinton was overridden only once during his terms. So, the question has come why didn’t he use that strategy on “Three Strikes and You Are Out”. To be clear, the “War on Drugs” began during the Nixon administration. Bill Clinton was instrumental in passage of the Violent Crime Control & Law Enforcement Act of 1994. However, most of the growth of incarceration in America has occurred in state systems and federal prison growth has been at a smaller fraction than at the federal level.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the most federal prisoners are convicted of drug offenses – conspiracies to distribute marijuana and marijuana use. The states are not paying for this – families of the incarcerated are paying for it while these corporations are cashing in on a $70 billion dollar industry. Democrats are not pushing for more people to be put into jails so private prison corporations can increase prison populations for profit, encourage high recidivism rates, and state governments can increase their coffers.

Democrats support the Constitution which gives the president, duly elected, the authority to appoint Supreme Court justices.

Democrats support ending tax inversions that stop tax dodging corporate mergers.

American Idol has come to an end and with your help at the polls, soon the reality show presidential contest by the other side will come to an end and we can elect a real president because 2016 is a real election year.

“Acting White”

Share your Story Dear friends: I have been asked to write a chapter in a book that will address colorism in education. My chapter will focus on “acting white.”

Specifically, when I was growing up, I was a “smart” student. My top performance in school, doing homework, raising my hand to answer questions, etc. often drew the accusation from my African American classmates and friends that I was “acting white.”

Now, I know there are psychologists out there who say this is not true and does not exist. But alas, it was absolutely true for me. I have written about this in past works. I will do so again for this new book. I do know that many young folks today who continue to have such allegations hurled at them so feel free to share this email with whoever and have folks email me directly.

I did a survey on this very question about 7 years ago and the results were consistent with my experiences decades ago. I’d like to update my earlier survey. I would love to hear from anyone out there who has a similar/related story either involving yourself or someone you know. I would like to include your story in the chapter. Comic Republic We started 2016 hopeful, inspite of the negative forecasts of what the Nigerian economy had to offer. We were a small start up, content with doing our little quota to promote African Superhero comics that will inspire people to be superhero protagonists in their daily lives.

3 months down the line, we have experienced organic growth on all our social media channels and received fan mail from across the globe. Nothing prepared us for the amazing love from the media. The State of the

Music Industry in STL

Through The Eyes of Local Artists

The year is 2016 and oh how things have changed for the local recording artists here in St. Louis. In spite of its growing list of talented hip/hop, R&B, pop, rock and gospel artists, Da Lou still has not had a major signing since Nelly and the Lunatics. There are many opinions as to why STL artists are struggling to be heard and to reach a wider audience. Hang 10 Productions is a local artist management and development Company as well as a promotions company. For two years, company heads London Davis Sr. and Delilah Conswalo have been creating platforms locally for artists to be heard. The monthly STL R&B Concert Series, annual Coldest Crew in Da Lou and August Madness are all popular staples on the local scene.

Several talented artists have crossed these stages as well as several others stages in Da Lou. Many have opened for national recording artists. Some have been American Idol or The Voice contestants. Still, the goal of getting beyond regional success is elusive. It has been blamed on oversaturation of artists trying to get to the top, lack of radio/DJ help locally to break a record, lack of support for local shows that showcase local talent etc. We decided to speak with two local artists from different genres to get their opinion on the state of the industry here in St. Louis. DeAndre Perryman, R&B singer, who was a contestant on Season 4 of American Idol, has been the opening act for several national recording artists as well as performed all over the country, but continues to have only regional success in spite of his talents and drive.

Traci Vandee, pop singer on the rise has some strong opinions on the subject as well.

We met up with them to discuss how they feel about The State of the Music Industry in Stl.

Traci Vandee:

1. How long have you been performing in St. Louis? – I have been performing in St. Louis for 7 years now! I’ve been writing for 20 years. That seems crazy to say! Each performance and song has its own unique story and memory. I wouldn’t change anything.

2. What do you think makes it so difficult for local artists here in the STL to gain more than regional success? – I feel like everything is working against me. Unfortunately unless you have a huge financial backing there’s not much that you are able to do to gain support. There are also little to no venues appropriate for my genre of music. I feel like every time I have a small amount of success I take that step forward but immediately lose momentum because of that lack of community support. It’s really every man or woman for themselves and even with me doing free work for other artists for the good of the art; I rarely see the love returned.

3. Do you feel as though radio and the local DJs support local artists?

– Not necessarily and especially not for a variety of genres.

It seems, the local hip hop radio stations do a phenomenal job of supporting local artists; however, when it comes to Pop or Pop/Rock music, mine for instance, it requires a great deal of financial backing in order to gain support on radio. Oppositely through my own networking, I’ve had wonderful support from local DJs. I’ve gained and remained friends with many local DJs that would be willing to play music that I supplied. I would throw some hashtags and drop names, but I’ll refrain. J 4. How do you feel the talents of local artists in STL compare to national recording artists? - We have so much talent in STL it’s unbelievable.

There are so many unknown exceptional artistic talents and it’s unfortunate that it goes to such waste. There are so many times I hear a song on main stream radio station and think to myself, “Why the hell are they playing this? This is terrible! There’s no inspiration, talent or creativity! I know so many people that have 100X more talent than this artist and song. How can this be?” I know the answer 9/10 is that they either just got a lucky break or they had enough financial backing to support their cause and create enough buzz. Nothing against them, I’m happy for them, it’s just hard to understand when you work so hard and put your passion and soul into something and not feel you’re reaching enough people to make a positive impact others. Forget about fame, I just want to make a difference in people’s lives. At this point, I’ve not had either lucky break or huge financial support, but I’m not giving up!

5. It is said that artists are leaving STL because success is impossible to get here in music. What is your view on why artists leave STL seeking success in other cities such as Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles etc. – I’ve seen this happen first hand. I have several friends that are artists (dancers, singers, producers) that have left St. Louis because their dreams are too big for STL. I see their careers growing and they really have found success. It’s not that they have had to work any less hard; it’s just that the work that they put in finally pays off. There’s just more support in other major cities. I feel like this has a lot do with the viewers and listeners perception however. Let’s really think about what success is. Success is defined in many different ways. I feel that is where the issue lies. For most listeners and viewers, they do not deem an artist successful unless they have main stream radio support. For instance, if my song were to be played on 104.9 or 1077.7 tomorrow, I’d be an overnight star. Why is that? It is because of the perception of success? Why can’t my talent be recognized through the hard work of networking and spins from a DJ or heaven forbid the actual content of creativity.

1. How long have you been performing in St. Louis? -I have bee in St. Louis since 1991. My home church, New Prospect Missionary Baptist choir from E. St Louis used to visit other churches in St. Louis for musicals a I, then, moved on to talent shows and competitions. After that, came the live now, the development of up and coming young artist like Lil Ralph.

2. What do you think makes it so difficult for local artists here the STL to gain more than regional success? -I think that selfishne confidentiality, lack of confidence, hate, and the lack of real support makes i make it other than regionally here in The Midwest. There is a lot of hidden ta and it’s going to take relationships, love, support, and drive to make it visible isn’t a hard thing to accomplish if you’re focused. You can’t be scared to step box to discover who you are and what you’re capable of. Togetherness and is the key. Many have made it from here.

3. Do you feel as though radio and the local DJs support loca -The radio here is restricted to some extent. The DJs do support local artist, only do so much. There are DJ mix shows and Sunday local artist play. Then spots that can be opened do to your hustle and promotion to the right arena to the right people, the right way, with the right product, and you got a win w It can be done.

4. How do you feel the talents of local artists in STL compare national recording artists? -There are lots of local yet national acts rig St. Louis. Let’s not get things twisted. When Jeezy is in St. Louis, He’s natio When he’s at home, he’s local. When P.Diddy is in St. Louis, he’s national, b York, he’s local. When you record records in other cities all the time, you’re n Talent is talent. Mix that with common sense and business then you have yo home run. St. Louis/E. St. Louis has those types artist.

5. It is said that artists are leaving STL because success is im to get here in music. What is your view on why artists leave S seeking success in other cities such as Atlanta, New York, Los etc.? -The idea of living in big cities in the Entertainment industry is every a “I’m going to make it big and move out the hood. I’ma buy mom’s a house in can hear my friends speaking on it now. However; reality is you’ll just be goi where thousands, if not, hundreds of thousands of you are going to do the s you’re trying to do, the result is Oversaturation. I say, “Be You wherever you out, yes, but always remember home.” It’s cool to get to those spots for the r but remember home base is where the home runs come from.

There you have it, The State of The Music Industry In Stl Through The Eyes of Local Artists. Although the opinions differ from artist to artist, maybe even genre to genre, they are in sync on a few things: 1) STL is full of talent that will stand up to major artists and 2) moving away seems to be ideal considering how difficult it is to make the transition from local to even regional in STL. Is it money, support, or right place right time? We will have to wait and see or at least until the next STL artists makes it beyond local success.

Spice It Up -

| MOROCCAN SALMON Even though I love chicken, I have a neverending love affair with fish and seafood.

My mom has been a vegetarian for almost 20 years now. As I got older and started cooking more frequently, I learned to cook several different types of fish multiple ways.

We had switch up the spices, the sides, sauces and cooking techniques. Til this day, even after every recipe variation we’ve tried, baked salmon is still her favorite.

Cooking with different spice mixtures and blends is the best way to add extra flavor & aromatics to your meals without having to add any additional calories or fat. So I did some research on Moroccan spices and used it for this month’s article. There’s a wide variety of spices used in Moroccan cooking that creates rich + flavorful sauces and tangy side dishes & salads. What we are using in this recipe is not a “traditional” spice blend, by any means.

I combined three different recipes to try and achieve the right flavor of the spice blend I was looking for. It will be extremely aromatic & excite your senses. Don’t be afraid to taste a pinch of the mixture before rubbing it on the salmon. You may need to adjust the amount of salt and or sugar depending on your taste buds. This spice mixture can also be used on your favorite meats like chicken, beef or lamb.

MOROCCAN SALMON 1/2 tsp Cinnamon, ground 1/2 tsp Cumin, ground 1/2 tsp Salt 1/4 tsp Black or White Pepper 1 tsp

Paprika

1/4 tsp Cardamom 1/4 tsp Coriander, ground 1/2 tsp Ginger, ground 3/4 tsp Brown Sugar or Granulated Sugar pinch

Cayenne Pepper

2 Salmon filets, 5 oz each Directions: Rub a small amount of oil on your salmon, making sure it is lightly coated. Next sprinkle Moroccan spice blend over the fillets. Be sure that the spices are evenly distributed and the fish is completely coated with the blend. Let sit for 15-20 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. In a medium sauté pan, heat 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the top & bottom sides of the salmon, until both sides get a nice crisp layer. Place pan, with salmon still in it, in the preheated oven. Bake for 1015 minutes, or until salmon is done.

Serve immediately with rice and/or on a bed of sautéed asparagus.

Portfolio Fundraiser Moves to Artist's Studio

Janet Riehl's "Women & Wardrobe: The Riehl Collection" exhibit has finished it's successful run at The Portfolio Gallery and Education Center. It brought in $2,000 to help with much-needed building repairs. Many people went home with framed ($150) and unframed ($50) prints they love, and a good time was had by all.

Folks have said they would have loved to have seen the show, and were sorry they missed it. Janet has decided to host At Home evenings on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. so you can! Come visit, enjoy the work, and of course buy whatever calls to you.
