Attention Glass Students The Glass Studio has a few simple rules that all students must follow to ensure everyone’s safety: • No open-toe shoes, sandals, slippers or other inappropriate footwear. Students must wear closed-toe shoes with sturdy soles (sneakers, boots, etc.).

For morning camps, we’ll be offering an early drop-off option starting at 8 am for only $20 per camper.

• Students should wear cotton clothing or other natural fibers (No synthetic fibers).

• Long pants are suggested; shorts are allowed but must be long enough to cover the knees.

For afternoon camps, we’ll be offering our after-care option from 3:30-5:30 pm, priced at $175 per camper.

This includes both camp and after-care.

Parents can also select our “stay all day” option, priced at $300 per camper. Camp and aftercare are included.

Early drop-off is an additional $20 per camper.

• Eye protection is mandatory. You can bring your own safety glasses or the studio will provide a pair.

• Long hair must be tied back.

• Students should bring a refillable water container to class since it’s warm on the Glass Studio floor.

Lunch Breaks ArtsQuest™ is a Bethlehem, PA-based nonprofit dedicated to presenting music, arts, festivals, cultural experiences and educational and outreach programs that aid in economic development, urban revitalization and community enrichment. Through festivals such as its flagship event, Musikfest®; the Banana Factory® cultural arts and education center; and the ArtsQuest Center and SteelStacks™ arts and cultural campus, ArtsQuest’s programming reaches more than 1.2 million people annually.

Attire

Supervised lunch breaks are provided for students enrolled in full-day camps. Please make sure your child brings a bagged lunch (refrigeration available). Per parent/guardian approval, teens may go off site for lunch.

ATTENTION: Please avoid bringing peanut butter, nuts or food products made from these to the Banana Factory as a precaution for those with allergies.

Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

All glass pieces need time to cool down. Students will need to return to the studio to pick up their work or make arrangements to have the completed work mailed to them.

The Glass Studio is not responsible for shipping costs; please allow seven days for pick-up after completion of the work.

Notes

Parents are also encouraged to pack their children small snacks for each class and for after-care sessions.

Teachers may take students outdoors during class and during breaks with the help of a teaching assistant. Please bring sunscreen and dress students in weather-appropriate attire.

NEW for 2014! First Friday Art Shows!

At the end of each week, students may be asked to submit an outstanding piece of work to be displayed at one of our two First Friday art shows. Students in Sessions 1 and 2 will have the opportunity to show their work at First Friday on Friday, July 4, and students in Sessions 3, 4, and 5 will have the opportunity to show their work at First Friday on Friday, September 5.

Learn new strokes out of the pool! During this painting camp, students discover composition, perspective and color mixing techniques by working with a variety of paint mediums. Students learn to see the world as artists and to create beautiful compositions from their palettes! Drawing skills will also be developed.

In this camp, young photographers take their skills outside as they learn to see and shoot like the pros. Students will focus on natural subjects and learn how to build portable outdoor mini-studios for their work.

Enjoy fun in the sun while making a masterpiece! In this camp, students will take their art outdoors and learn to draw their surroundings in a variety of media ranging from pencil to charcoal.

In this camp, students will learn about a new artist each day and create works inspired by the great masterpieces! Students will create works inspired by artists like Georgia O’Keefe, Vincent Van Gogh, and Jasper Johns.

(PM) Space Race with Beth Ann McFadden Explore the outer reaches of the universe in this fun-filled camp for explorers. In this camp, art and imagination travel to other galaxies and explore the known universe. Under Captain Beth’s careful instruction, campers will construct their own space ships, meet alien life forms, paint the stars, and much more!

(PM) Wired Bugs! with Valerie Breaux Haaf

Bugs are the inspiration in this camp for designing fun mini-sculptures and jewelry. Students will learn how to use copper wire, beads, and found objects with tools and wiring techniques to create amazing bugs!

Ages 13-17 (AM) NEW! Bas-Relief Sculpture: Clay to Cast Paper Tiles with Virginia Abbott In this camp, young artists will experience the exiting combination of sculpture and eco-art. Students will learn the classical process of modeling sculpture through a green art casting process, which will help them to create molds and tiles.

(AM) Video Game Design with Jonathan Rotger

In this camp, students learn how to design a basic video game.

They’ll discover great graphic techniques from a pro while building worlds for their characters.

AGES 13-17 (AM) Mixed Media Painting with Angie Snyder-Lande

In this drawing and painting class, students learn how to put a twist on traditional techniques to create exciting new art. Students are exposed to traditional mediums like watercolors and acrylics, but also take their paintings to the next level through explorations with non-traditional materials like sand, yarn and paper.

(PM) Wheelthrowing with Deb Slahta Transform a ball of clay into a variety of beautiful objects as you learn the techniques of the pottery wheel. In this camp, students are mesmerized by the spinning wheel and the feel of wet clay between their fingers. Glaze Daze is scheduled for students to come back and glaze their work.

In this class, campers will be encouraged to explore the art of basketweaving and will create baskets in a variety of shapes and colors.

Students will learn basic to intermediate basket-weaving skills and will leave class with finished baskets perfect for both functional and decorative use.

Cartooning with Carol Kilbanks In this camp, students will learn how to draw cartoons from Cotty Kilbanks, an experienced professional cartoonist who has worked in the cartoon industry in Los Angeles and New York City for Disney, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon and Marvel. As they develop their own cartooning styles, students learn to use shapes, understand volume and draw poses. Participants also dabble in the Japanese anime drawing style.

Bonjour! Welcome to the “City of Art!” Over the course of the week, campers will experience why Paris attracts so many artists from around the world. Each day will begin at Café Gurbois, where campers will be introduced to the regular “bohemians” like Monet, Cezanne, Pissaro, and Degas. After meeting their new friends, campers will spend the rest of the session creating works inspired by the artists they’ve met.

Participants will also learn about composition, light and other digital photo basics. Some art is meant to be touched! Join artist Kim Hogan as she works with students in this unique medium and allows you to create artwork that is not just beautiful to see, but that also engages the sense of touch! Every student will leave camp with a beautiful, original stuff animal he or she has created from his or her imagination.

(PM) Video Game Design with Jonathan Rotger

In this camp, students learn how to design a basic video game. They’ll discover great graphic techniques from a pro while building worlds for their characters.

(PM) NEW! passpART: The Ravenna, Venice, & Florence, Italy Tour with Jacqueline Cornette

Ciao! Welcome to Italy, home of some of the most well-known artwork, dating back eons. During their tour, campers will be inspired to create mosaics at Ravenna, masterpieces in Venice, and produce their own Renaissance art in Florence.

(AM) NEW! Handbuilding with Liz Wheeler In this camp, students will get creative as they learn various ways to build functional objects and sculptures using only their hands. Campers will explore the ways clay has been used since ancient times for pots and dishes as they create their own functional or sculptural objects. Glaze Daze is scheduled for students to come back and glaze their work.

Afternoon Session: 12:30 -3:30 Ages 4-6

Ages 7-9

Learn new strokes out of the pool! During this painting camp, students discover composition, perspective and color mixing techniques by working with a variety of paint mediums. Students learn to see the world as artists and to create beautiful compositions from their palettes! Drawing skills will also be developed.

(AM) Photographic Composition and Digital Design*

with Joan Pasternak Want to discover what to look for to take dynamic photos? In this camp, students go on in-class excursions in search of the perfect photographs.

Participants will also learn about composition, light and other digital photo basics. Students are welcome to bring their own digital camera, iPhone or iPad with which to shoot; however, digital cameras will be provided for students may who need one. Students leave this camp with prints to last a lifetime!

AGES 13-17 (AM) NEW! Basket Weaving with Debra Zvanut

In this class, campers will be encouraged to explore the art of basketweaving and will create baskets in a variety of shapes and colors.

Students will learn basic to intermediate basket-weaving skills and will leave class with finished baskets perfect for both functional and decorative use.

(PM) Wheelthrowing with Deb Slahta Transform a ball of clay into a variety of beautiful objects as you learn the techniques of the pottery wheel. In this camp, students are mesmerized by the spinning wheel and the feel of wet clay between their fingers. Glaze Daze is scheduled for students to come back and glaze their work.

TEACHER BIOGRAPHIES Virginia Abbott: A sculptor and resident artist at the Banana Factory, Virginia teaches Banana Factory after-school programs and tuition classes. She works in a variety of mediums, particularly recycled art.

Joe Billera: An accomplished artist and photographer for 30 years, Joe is an energetic instructor with a unique approach to learning the visual language.

Maryann Cimino: A graduate of Northampton Community College with an associate’s degree in graphic arts, Maryann went on to Kutztown University to complete a degree in art education. She has taught art in Wilson Area School District for more than 30 years.

Jacqueline Cornette: Banana Factory resident artist Jacqueline earned her BFA in Fashion Illustration and minored in painting at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. Since 2002 she has devoted her career exclusively to the fine art of encaustic painting.

Alistair Durie: A full-time elementary school teacher, Alistair holds master’s degrees in both instructional and classroom technology. He has enjoyed teaching digital photography camps at the Banana Factory for the past six years.

Valerie Breaux Haaf: A Banana Factory Resident Artist since 1998, Valerie studied painting at University of the Arts in Philadelphia and earned her BFA in painting at Kutztown University. She works in mixed media, sculpture and jewelry and has shown her work regionally for 30 years.

Natalie Hartman: A multi-talented freelance artist from Bethlehem, Natalie teaches arts & crafts to school-age children at the Banana Factory. She also creates and runs after-school art programs for local elementary schools, middle schools and other organizations.

Kim Hogan: Kim is a lifelong artist who began teaching at the Banana Factory in 2006 and enjoys sharing her passion for art with adults and children.

Joe Keppel: A professional magician for over 30 years, Joe has performed at Musikfest, Mayfair, the Rose Garden Children’s Festival, First Night and in more than 40 countries. He currently teachers magic classes at the Banana Factory.

Carol ‘Cotty’ Kilbanks: Cotty earned a degree in illustration from Syracuse University and has spent many years in the animation industry working for Warner Brothers on Bugs Bunny cartoons, Nickelodeon on Rocko’s Modern Life and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; and Marvel for Ironman cartoons.

Angie Snyder Lande: Angie received her BFA from Kutztown University and has maintained a studio at the Banana Factory for 10 years. During this time, she has exhibited her work throughout the region, taught drawing and painting to all age levels and supervised numerous community mural projects.

Beth Ann McFadden: Beth Ann studied glass at Tyler School of Art, as well as art and education at Kutztown University. She has taught for several years at the Banana Factory in after-school programs, tuition classes and summer camps.

Joan Pasternak: Joan is a professional and fine art photographer who also teaches photography at Freedom High School. She has received multiple awards and exhibited in many galleries and museums, including a one-woman show of her African photos at the Kemmerer Museum in Bethlehem.

Jonathan Rotger: A designer and programmer, Jonathan holds multiple degrees and believes that the art of designing comes to those who yearn for change. He has taught video game and web design classes at the Banana Factory.

Adrian Sauers: A graduate of Kutztown University, Banana Factory resident artist Adrian Sauers works in watercolor and photography and teaches drawing and painting at the Banana Factory.

Liz Wheeler: Liz has used clay as a medium for reflection and expression since she first encountered it in college in 1994. She holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Masters Degree in Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture from Binghamton University.

Deborah Slahta: A graduate of Moravian College, Deb has produced finely crafted Raku and stoneware pottery for more than 35 years. She started teaching at the Banana Factory in 1999 and was accepted as a Resident Artist in May 2000.

Stacey Stangl: A fine arts teacher who attended the Banana Factory as a child, Stacey is currently pursuing a Masters of Art Education degree at Kutztown University. With backgrounds in sewing, costuming, illustration, painting, jewelry making, metalsmithing, and papermaking, she loves to try new mediums and teach a variety of classes to children in grades K-12.

Kimberly Tanzos: Kimberly is a 2009 graduate of Kutztown University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Art Education. She currently works at the Allentown Art Museum as a museum educator, at Penn State Lehigh Valley as the Assistant to the Arts Coordinator, and is a resident artist at the Banana Factory.

Debra Zvanut: Debbi has been basket weaving for 22 years and working with children for 45. She teaches at the Hamburg Arts Alliance, Salem Evangelical Congregational Church, Northwestern Lehigh School District Community Education Program and the Banana Factory.

Cancellations ArtsQuest reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment. If you register for a course that is cancelled, you will be notified of the cancellation and will be issued a refund or a gift certificate to be used on any future class excluding glass. ArtsQuest is not responsible for nonrefundable airline tickets or other travel expenses incurred due to a class cancellation.

Refunds If a student requests a cancellation more than seven days before class begins, he or she will receive a refund or a gift certificate to be used on any future class excluding glass. No refund will be issued for student cancellations made less than seven days before the start of class. A “no show” will result in the customer’s credit card being charged the entire course fee.

A $10 administrative fee is charged for all cancellations.

Makeup Dates ArtsQuest does not offer makeup dates for any student who is unable to attend a scheduled class.

Inclement Weather In the event of inclement weather, students should call 610-297-7100, Option 4, to learn the status of classes for that day. A makeup session will be scheduled for any class that is cancelled due to the weather.

Artwork Pickup Policy Student artwork will be held 30 days after course end date. All work is subject to discard after the 30-day period.
