According to Evander, Herakles stopped to pasture the cattle he had stolen from Geryon near the cave where lived Cacus, the son of Vulcan. As Herakles slept, Cacus took a liking to the cattle and slyly stole eight of them by dragging them by their tails, so as to leave no trail. When Herakles awoke and started to leave, the remaining herd made plaintive noises towards the cave; Herakles then found the cattle and killed Cacus.
