Donor Newsletter May 2014 Giving to special causes you care about can be incredibly rewarding. If your passion centres around the arts; be it performance or visual arts, the arts and education, or the revitalisation of regional communities through creative projects, then Artslink Queensland is the one organisation that can meet your arts interests. Your support provides positive community outcomes through quality arts experiences state-wide. As I write, Artslink is receiving very strong signals from all levels of government regarding the work that this organisation undertakes and about the value which governments place upon that work. The Federal Government through the AttorneyGeneral’s Department and Ministry for the Arts has confirmed support so that MAD Camp, our music, arts, drama and dance residency program for 60 young regional Queenslanders can continue in September. We have also just received advice from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund of success with our application for $32,000 for the fit-out of our Associate Artist rehearsal studio to support development of our touring productions. We have also received strong support for a range of other projects, which you can read about in this newsletter.

Like many other small arts organisations and businesses, we are facing significant funding challenges to enable us to meet the arts needs of regional communities. These needs are real and immediate and are powerfully expressed by so many artists, arts workers and regional communities generally. I hope you find our projects and services highlighted in this publication to be of interest and that you are as excited as we are to be able to participate in the delivery of some of these great programs. It would be wonderful if you would consider a tax deductible gift to our Cultural Support Fund as part of your giving at the end of this financial year. Your ongoing support for this organisation is appreciated far beyond mere words. Enjoy the read.

Mr Rush and Silverstone Developments Mr Rush Espresso Bar at Teneriffe is a social enterprise, with all profits supporting our programs and services in regional Queensland. Every dollar we earn helps us to deliver arts experiences to schools and communities throughout Queensland, while at the same time supporting local artists and actors. Silverstone Developments have generously donated almost $80,000 to Artslink Queensland to offset the costs of running Mr Rush, and to enable Artslink Queensland to direct their funds and energies to supporting artists and arts programs throughout Queensland. “We think the work of Artslink Queensland, in bringing arts to regional Queensland and promoting our state’s amazing artists and arts programs, plays a huge role in Queensland’s continuing cultural evolution and we are delighted to play a supporting role,” said Troy Daffy, Silverstone Development’s Managing Director. “We are committed supporters of Artslink Queensland

and of Mr Rush, not just through this philanthropic donation but by paying regular visits to Mr Rush cafe.” The Mr Rush business also acts as an arts hub for casual meetings and events such as workshops and performances.

Reconnect@Rocky In 2013, the John Villiers Trust gave $30,000 and the Helene Jones Charity Trust $10,000, toward a creative learning program for secondary school students in Rockhampton to support their continued enthusiasm for formal education and lifelong learning. Students from Rockhampton State High School and Yeppoon State High School were selected to participate in the Reconnect@Rocky program: an artist in residence style project providing the opportunity to collectively write a song and create an accompanying film clip with the guidance of industry professionals. The students have now written and recorded their songs in a professional recording studio with the assistance of experienced

session musicians. They have also worked with Mad Dog Productions to create their film clips. The program was designed to unlock the talents of the students, encourage team work, instil them with a sense of self-belief and motivation, and highlight the diverse and exciting possibilities the future has to offer. The program will reach completion in June 2014 but evidence of these outcomes is already emerging.

Jani Haenke Charitable Trust supports in-school productions Following the 2013/14 success of My Story Your Story and Deadly Eh?!, the Jani Haenke Charitable Trust will again support the delivery of Indigenous performances in schools. The Trust’s gift of $30,000 will ensure students across Queensland have access to more Aboriginal stories, which foster cultural understanding and inclusion from a young age. The 2013/14 primary school production My Story Your Story and secondary school production Deadly Eh?! have been among the most popular schools productions, playing to over 30,000 students. Both productions focused on valuing culturally diverse stories and contained elements of Aboriginal culture including song and dance. Teachers and students connected strongly to the material and rated the quality of the production highly. “My Story Your Story was an excellent presentation for our students and another step

towards developing understanding and respect for differences in cultures and individuals.” – Teacher, Warwick. “The students and teachers engaged very deeply into the content of Deadly Eh?! I feel it was important to view such a play relating to these issues. The stage layout was inventive as many of my students had not seen theatre in the round.” – Teacher, Brisbane While the new productions for 2015 are yet to be commissioned, we are confident the lives of students and teachers across Queensland will again be enriched by experiencing Indigenous stories through performance. Thank you again to the Jani Haenke Charitable Trust.
