Norman Huynh Norman Huynh has established himself as a conductor with an ability to captivate an audience through a multitude of musical genres. This season, Huynh continues to showcase his versatility in concerts featuring Itzhak Perlman, hip hop artists Nas and Wyclef Jean, and vocal superstar Storm Large. Born in 1988, Huynh is a first generation Asian American and the first in his family to pursue classical music as a career. Upcoming and recent engagements include the St. Louis Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and Grant Park Music Festival. He has served as a cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic with John Williams. Huynh has been at the forefront of moving orchestral music out of the traditional concert hall. In 2011, he co-founded the Occasional Symphony in Baltimore to celebrate holidays by performing innovative concerts in distinct venues throughout the inner-city. The orchestra performed on Dr. Seuss’ birthday at Port Discovery Children’s Museum, Halloween in a burnt church turned concert venue, and Cinco de Mayo in the basement bar of a Mexican restaurant. Huynh currently resides in Portland, Oregon, and enjoys skiing, board games, and riding his motorcycle. You can follow him on Instagram @normanconductor.

Pamela Mahon Pam Mahon is thrilled to be teaming up once again with the Oregon Symphony, Dance West, and the Pacific Youth Choir. Entertaining pint-sized symphony

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Meet Rozalyn Pucci, the cover artist for this issue of InSymphony Kids. The Oregon Symphony selected Rozalyn’s art from the many spectacular submissions of the Dance Party! coloring page in the Kids Activity Book. Congratulations, Rozalyn! We hope you enjoy the show.

Rozalyn

Pucci

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am seven years old. I like cats. I live in Newberg with my brother, my mom, and my dad. We have one bunny and five chickens. I am in a second grade Spanish immersion program, and I really like speaking Spanish (even though my mom doesn’t know how). I like to draw, paint, and dance. I do dance shows for my mom and dad. How did you get the Oregon Symphony’s Kid’s Activity Book? My grandma and grandpa took me to the Symphony, and I like going there. What made you choose the coloring page of the dancers to send to the Symphony? I chose the page of the dancers because it stood out to me. It’s like how I work. What’s your favorite color? What kinds of things do you like to draw? My favorite color is violet-purple. I like to draw fairies, cats, and pretty ladies. Do you play any instruments, or would you like to someday? I have played the violin in the past, and I want to play the harp. What are some of the other Oregon Symphony performances you’ve seen, and what did love you about them? I have gone a few times, including Peter and the Wolf and Oregon Trail. I really loved all of it, but I especially remember the dancing; Peter flies! I really liked the goose because he’s funny. I liked the bird costume, too. I like how the building has two floors – a balcony. It’s a neat building. What’s your favorite dance move? I like them all! It depends! What’s your favorite dancing song? Songs from Swan Lake. What’s your favorite thing to do when you get to stay out past bedtime? Party with friends. .

DANCING 1

THE MIAMI SUPER CONGA, A DANCING LINE OF 119,986 PEOPLE, SET THE WORLD RECORD FOR THE LONGEST CONGA ON MARCH 13, 1988. The dancers gathered at the Calle Ocho Festival in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Florida.

3

BREAKING (ALSO KNOWN AS “BREAKDANCING”) IS A HIP-HOP STYLE OF DANCE that evolved from Funk legend James Brown’s moves while performing his 1971 hit “Get the Good Foot” and dj Kool Herc’s identification and manipulation of the rhythmic breakdown sections of Funk songs (also known as the “breaks”).

5

IN ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLOGY, NINE MUSES WERE ASSOCIATED WITH EACH OF THE NINE ARTS. Terpsichore was the muse of dance and chorus.

6

IN MANY RELIGIONS, SUCH AS BUDDHISM AND HINDUISM, DANCE IS A PART OF WORSHIP, and dancing figures are often found in shrines and temples.

7

THE CULT-CLASSIC MOVIE FOOTLOOSE IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY ABOUT A TOWN IN OKLAHOMA THAT OUTLAWED DANCING until local high schoolers’ challenge to the law succeeded in 1979.

8

BEFORE THE INVENTION OF READY-MADE TAP SHOES WITH METAL PLATES, dancers would hammer pennies or nails into the soles of their shoes to make noise.

9

IN 1950, FAMED BALLROOM DANCER ARTHUR MURRAY AND HIS WIFE BROUGHT THE FIRST TELEVISED DANCE SHOW, THE ARTHUR MURRAY PARTY, TO THE AIRWAVES. American Bandstand, featuring host Dick Clark, premiered two years later and broadcast the most popular dance and fashion for nearly 40 years. Soul Train joined the dance show lineup in 1971 and ran for 35 years!

4

RAP LEGEND TUPAC SHAKUR STUDIED BALLET DURING HIGH SCHOOL at the Baltimore School for the Arts. He danced the role of Mouse King in the school’s production of The Nutcracker.

2

IN 1518, PEOPLE IN STRASBOURG, FRANCE, DANCED THEMSELVES TO DEATH FOR NO OBVIOUS REASON. One woman, Frau Troffea, started dancing and did not stop. Within a month, 400 people had joined her. Some of the dancers died from heart attacks, strokes, and pure exhaustion. While the cause was never determined, other dancing plagues occurred in western Europe in the 14th–17th centuries.

10

IRISH DANCER MICHAEL FLATLEY HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE WORLD’S HIGHEST-PAID DANCER. At the height of his fame, he earned up to $1.8 million a week, making the insurance of his legs for more than $ 40 million a no-brainer. .

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

SP T the INSTRUMENTS

Which of these musical instruments can you spot in the orchestra? How many of each are there? Hint: Not all of them are in the orchestra!

triangle

electric guitar

trumpet

maracas

horn

lyre

accordion

violin

drum

Did you know? The symphony orchestra is the largest and most exciting of all musical groups, with as many as 100 players. It is divided into four musical families called strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Every instrument in the orchestra belongs to one of these families. In a symphony orchestra, the musical families are related to one another, just like cousins, aunts, and uncles. The orchestra is a big family of instruments playing together. 16 artslandia.com
