Festival 2024
Welcome to the 29th annual International Festival of Arts & Ideas!
This year, we allow ourselves to dream in multiple ways, responding to the forces that impact our lives. The headlines—climate change, democracy in peril, an epidemic of loneliness, cultural erosion—can leave us feeling out of control and helpless, not unlike Shakespeare’s protagonist in King Lear. Yet, they also serve as calls to action, invitations to respond.

So, when we discuss safeguarding our coastlines with Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, we explore what it means when we get it right. And as we examine the civic landscape, we listen to young people in a conversation led by Citywide Youth Coalition. And because we know that shared celebrations strengthen our cultural fabric and foster understanding, we dance with Ukrainian musicians Dakha Brakha, and Sierra Leone’s own Dobet Ghanoré. We delve into our shared migration story through CONTRATIEMPO’s new work, ¡Azúcar!, and we again make the Green bounce with the Caribbean Heritage Festival
We also continue to position ourselves within the definition of “international,” defining it on our own terms. We celebrate Americana music with the Ebony Hillbillies; we enjoy the New Haven conductorial debut of Perry So with the New Haven’s Symphony Orchestra; and we sway to the powerful jazz of Bronx native, Samara Joy.
So, if we were to choose one word for this year’s Festival, it would be MOVE. Our movement acknowledges agency and power. The world beckons, and we respond.
Join us on this exhilarating journey, beginning in April, as we delve into the theme of migration. We’ll unravel the rich tapestry of stories that intersect right here in New Haven. Stay with us through a special performance on the shoreline in early May, direct from Italy, tailor-made for our youngest audience members. Continuing that month is a celebration of the cultural resilience in our vibrant New Haven neighborhoods through six neighborhoodspecific festivities.
And when June arrives, we’ll turn up the volume on the New Haven Green and surrounding venues. Anticipate laughter, tears, dancing, and a whole lot of movement. It’s time for the Festival! Won’t you be part of this exhilarating experience?

An ensemble of ten actors ranging in age and gender all embody King Lear at the beginning. One by one, they strip off their paper crowns, transform into other characters, and conduct a take-over of the text and the theatre space.
