The accidents of the fabrics evoke forms of nature, abstracting the grace of a flower or a butterfly, recreating all its strength and chromaticism to suggest new readings of the natural environment and its inhabitants..

Fidelis Ayuwa izekor

Nigerian

Fidelis Ayuwa Amed Izekor JR born in Ologbo, Nigeria, is a multimedia artist living in New York City. Izekor is best recognized for his oil paintings and drawings, which explore the profoundness of identity through portraiture to further examine different ways of visual storytelling. Interested in civics and afro-futuristic fashion aesthetics, Izekor merges the techniques of old western oil painting/drawing with ancient and contemporary African artmaking to cultivate a new form of image creation. This way of developing imagery derives from looking closely at how oil paint is built up to mimic realistic imagery while paying attention to the abstract nature of marks and shapes through the understanding of West African forms of abstraction, especially in textiles. By blending the homogeneity of patterning with high-level details of realism, Izekor creates compositions that question and re-interpret what a portrait could look like.

His work references pop culture and art history, as well as his own life - being born in Nigeria and moving as a child to the South Bronx, where he was raised. His experience in both places is a recurrent theme in his work and, for Izekor, the construction of his figures is a means of representing a person's individuality and personal nature in an honest and raw way, even when those ways are rooted in fantasy and imagination. Though the representation of the self has been a prime focus for his practice, he has also explored depictions of landscape, poetry, nature and architecture.

The hummingbird exhibition is based on three essential points of life

1. Freedom to: live, see, speak, act and love.

2. Movement, to be able to move forward, to advance and in each step taken, to look at life beyond. If you are moving you are alive.

3. Color and joy

Judith Reissmann

Eswatini in Africa

Born in Eswatini, Southern Africa, Reissmann is a multidisciplinary artist whose work serves to exercise, preserve, and share her lived experience. Growing up in Africa’s last reigning monarchy, Reissmann’s art explores pieces of her culture and heritage from a corner of the world that most know nothing about. Her vibrant paintings and sculptural works are designed to transport you into her world, sharing an alternative view on what it means to be royal and regal.

Through her practice, Reissmann is interested in the process of art making as an act of connecting her physical and spiritual self. Each piece is an adventure into her imagination, often evolving and changing, with one work leading to another in an exercise of faithfully following her intuition.
