A F R O B E A T M A S T E R S make an appearance in Reno, you can bet it’s July and our town has become Artown. This annual celebration of the arts opens Thursday, June 30, and goes nonstop until closing night Sunday, July 31. “Artown is a coming together of the community to celebrate the arts,� says Beth Macmillan, executive director of Artown. “The sheer variety of our events ensures that everyone — from different age groups to different cultures — can connect with this festival.� One festival highlight will be Fourth of July at Hawkins Amphitheater. That evening, Pink Martini — a “little orchestra� that crosses genres and cultures — will perform, along with MarchFourth Marching Band. “It will be an incredible way to spend the Fourth of July,� Macmillan says. Collaborative musical performances highlight the festival mid-July, first with Doc Severinsen and the San Miguel Five. Severinsen, along with world-class guitarist Gil Gutierrez and three other musicians, mix guitar and trumpet for Latin, AfroLatin and gypsy jazz. Neo-soul diva India.Arie hits the stage two days later with Israeli musical icon Idan Raichel with their Open Door collaboration. Combining passionate R&B and pop in an Eastmeets-West experience, the show was a late addition to the festival but has generated a lot of buzz. AND
